    2. Does anyone connect with Loyd Harris of Williamson Co. Tn 1850's to 1900. Can anyone give info on Harris in this Co.? They are a 12/12 DNA match with one of the Southampton Co. VA Harrises but the family there is just starting out. By the way Family Tree DNA is very reliable when they say the wont give out any of your info as I have just experienced in trying to contact this family. Darlene

    3. Hi, Harrises, This will definitely help in identifying some Harrises who were in north central North Carolina [especially Jacqueline Tilley Wilkerson, whose Nathaniel Harris died in 1846...] - Pam pamstone@digital.net ===================================== Extracted from: NATIONAL SOCIETY OF DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, DAVIE POPLAR CHAPTER: Abstracts of Wills Recorded 1752-1800 in Orange County, North Carolina: Will Book A, B, and C, Plus 20 Pages in Book D, and 202 Early Marriages Not Shown in the Orange County Marriage Bonds; Shields, Ruth Herndon, Chairman, Genealogical Records Committee; Copyright, 1957, 1966, by NSDAR, Davie Poplar Chaper, Chapel Hill, NC; Published, 1972, 1979, by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD, USA; LOC #72-000078; ISBN #0-8063-0504-5 --- [Note: Book are unpaginated; wills are numbered sequentially. I was sent this info a long time ago, and, unfortunately, just noted the names there, as I didn't think there could be any connection between the Orange Co. and northwest North Carolina Harrises. Now, though, I am not so sure... Can anyone help out with 1790 Orange census, or with tax lists or deeds, or whatever, from there about that time? - As I have related before, my Harris in NWNC was William, who lived in Culpeper, VA before moving to Surry/Wilkes, NC. Living on one side of him in 1790 was Thomas WELSH/WALSH/WELCH [who was Will's neighbor in Culpeper, VA, too], and on the other side in 1790 was Susannah Harris [relationship unknown.] He was the only male Harris in his area at that time [Dabney Harris & a few others were listed in Wilkes on that census, as the Mitchell River Community, now in Surry Co., was part of Wilkes then. Our William lived in the Edwards area, a short distance west of Elkin, Surry Co.] About 1795 or 1796, our William moved to Ashe Co., NC for a number of years [exact reason unknown, but he did not sell his Wilkes Co. land.] While in Ashe Co., William lived close to the Virginia line, as he was listed in a court road order that mentioned the state line. He remained there until about 1813, when he moved back to Wilkes Co. I should also mention that there was a Nathaniel Harris in Culpeper, VA in 1781---Nathaniel seemed to have lived a good distance away from our Will there; possibly Nathaniel lived in what is now Madison Co., or what is now another county even further west. I don't know whose land either man lived on in Culpeper, nor, despite truly exhausting investigation of Culpeper and many surrounding counties, have I been able to determine either man's origins. I don't know if the younger Orange Co., NC Nathaniel Harris was related to the man who was in Culpeper, or may even have been the same? as the younger Orange Nathaniel. [BTW, the man who filed for a Revolutionary War pension in Culpeper, VA in 1832, mentioning no family, was not the same man as was listed in Culpeper, VA in 1781. The 1781 Harris was our William.] In 1790, "a" Nathaniel Harris was recorded in Wilkes, NC, with a household consisting of 2 fw males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 3 females (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 637_7, 1790 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed p. 183 [h.w. p. 512.]) Nathaniel was living five households from a Moses Harris, whose household was 1 fw male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 4 females. Neither man owned any slaves. And, while my Will was in Ashe in 1800, Nathaniel Harris was again recorded in Wilkes Co. [remember that this census was alpha by surname, so rats! we don't get the neighborhood placement.] Nathaniel's household on that census consisted of 1 fw male under 10, 2 males 16-25, 1 female under 10, and one female 16-25. Also recorded in 1800 were: Hugh Harris, and a James Harris. Hugh Harris' household consisted of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 45+, 1 fw female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 45+; and one slave. James Harris' family was made up of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 fw female under 10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 25-44. (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 32_33, 1800 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed & h.w. p. 44.) One other Harris there in 1800 was an Absalom Harris, whose household consisted of 2 fw males under 10, 1 male 26-44, and 2 fw females 26-44 (Ibid., p. 42.) ----- All these men had left Wilkes Co., by 1810. The only Harris recorded in Wilkes Co. at that time was a Thomas Harris, whose household consisted of 3 fw males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+, 2 fw females under 10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 16-25, and 1 female 26-44. (National Archives Microfilm Roll # M 252_43, 1800 Federal Census, Wilkes Co., NC, printed p. 284 [h.w. p. 901.]) ----- I don't know where any of the other 1800 Wilkes Co. men were in 1810---does anyone? - Nathaniel appeared in Orange Co. in 1820. C. being low and weak in body, but of sound mind, make this my last will and testament... to beloved wife, Jean Gillison, my whole estate, both real and personal, during her widowhood.... in case of her remarriage or decease, my four childrn, Elizabeth Price, Mary Harris, James Gillison, and Karenhappoch Harris to receive 20 shillings to be raised from sale of something that can be spared from the plantation... to daughter, Ann Gillison, at wife's decease or remariage, tract of land I now live on, of 125 acres, all househould furniture, cattle, etc... John Gillison, son of my daughter, Ann Gillison, remainder of estate, sufficient for his schooling... I appoint three friends, James Nash, Stephen Harris, and Larkin Nash, executors. Date: 3 January 1792 Wit: George Nash, James Thornhill, Valentine Nash. Rec:September 2(?),1792. From what I have been able to figure out, Mary (Gillison)Harris was the wife of Stephen Harris. Karenhappoch (Gillison) Harris was the wife of Benjamin Harris. Benjamin and Stephen were the sons of Claiborne "Ned" Harris and his wife, Judith ___________. This is part of the line that descends through Robert Harris of Ware Creek, and York County, Virginia. Robert's son, Thomas, was the father of Claiborne "Ned". Any insight or additional information concerning these Harris' or Gillison's is appreciated. Please respond through HH or H-SC so that others may be helped. Ira L. According to the author, the record book is untitled, but is accompanied by the original surveyors' plats and a plat map. - A number of the grants were abstracted and published in the magazine, The South Carolina Genealogical Review, they represent only a few of what must have been thousands of land grants in old District 96 following the Revolutionary War. - The abstractions have been compiled by the author from assorted issures of the magazine and published by her in two slim volumes, of which I have been able to obtain only the second portion. The page numbers of the published book match the actual pages in the several issues of The South Carolina GenealogicalReview on which the abstractions appeared. The page numbers of the surviving original record book are also included. The published book is unindexed. - It should be noted that some of these grants were "on the Bounty", indicating that they were for Revolutionary War service. --- pp. 175-176: Land Office Book p. 59 James GILLISON as a citizen, 100 acres of land situated on 6 Mile Creek, a branch of Keowee river, Bounding south on land surveyed for (name is omitted) the other sides on vacant land when surveyed by David HOPKINS, D. It is the only one that survived the years. The Original is in the British Public Record Office, and a hand-written transcript is in the Library of Congress,Washington, D.C. 1. HARLAN, KY HARRIS DESCS.: MOBERLY, BEGLEY, WOLFE, JONES, HUDSON, BRASSFIELD, PARKS
    2. PAM
    3. Hi, Harrises, Looking for anyone attached to this group. - Alford Lafayette HARRIS moved from North Carolina to Harlan Co., KY in 1869 or early 1870. His wife was Temperance M. "Tempy" [unknown]. They were recorded in Harlan in 1870, Alford as "Alfred" L., and as "A. L." in 1880 there. On both of those censuses, his widowed stepmother, Hannah, was living in his household [just noted as "Mother", which he surely considered her, as she must have raised him from about aged 4 or 5.] Alford Lafayette was born 1828 in Surry Co., NC. - Alford Lafayette was the son of John HARRIS, who married Hannah LOWDEN 1833 in Surry Co., NC. I have not yet discovered John's first wife's name. John Harris was a son of Silas & Eada Franklin Harris, and a grandson of William & Sarah [Unknown] Harris of Culpeper Co., VA, and of Surry, Ashe, and Wilkes Cos., NC. William HARRIS was b. ca. 1752 in Virginia, and served in the Revolutionary War in Culpeper Co. before moving to North Carolina. John's brothers and sisters were Joel, William Lewis, Sarah, [unknown son], Ambrose, James, [unk. daughter], Elizabeth, Squire Henderson, Edith "Eady", and Mary C. Harris. - A. L. HARRIS was recorded in 1850 in Surry Co., NC as Lafayette Harris. He was living in his own household, which was between that of his father and grandfather. He had a sister [probably full sister], Sally [surely Sarah], b. ca. 1835, and a half-brother, Columbus, b. ca. 1841. In 1860, he was recorded in Dobson, Surry Co., NC, as "A. L." Harris. - The children of A. L. & Temperance M. [Unknown] Harris, all born in Surry, North Carolina, were: Larthena? Harris, b. 1848 Thomas G. Harris, b. 1850 John K. Harris, b. 1852 Narcissus Salina, b. 1854 Sophia, b. 1855 Mary Frances, b. 1857 William L., b. 1859 Alford L. [Lafayette?], b. 1860 James M., b. 1862 or 1863 Columbus A., b. 1865 Rossie [Rausy], b. 1867 or 1868 - A document in Harlan Co., KY Settlement Book 2 [date unknown as of yet] purportedly lists the heirs of Sophia [Harris] BAKER, who apparently died childless, and the estate was divided between her siblings and their heirs. [If anyone can do a lookup on this document, reported on in a Harlan Footprints genealogical journal as recorded on p. 14 of Settlement Book 2, I would greatly appreciate it.] - The heirs of Sophia Harris BAKER were: J. M. HARRIS, A. L. HARRIS, G. A. [s/b C. A.] HARRIS, W. L. HARRIS, J. K. HARRIS and T. G. HARRIS. Rossie [Harris] MOBERLY's heirs were Grover MOBERLY, Maud BEGLEY and Bessie WOLFE. Narcissus [Harris] JONES' heirs were Will JONES, Sophia HUDSON, and the children of Narcissus' other daughter [who must have also been deceased], Nannie JONES BRASSFIELD PARKS, whose children were Herbert BRASSFIELD, Stella PARKS, Garrard [or Gerard] PARKS, and Sophia PARKS. - [Note that there is no mention of any heirs of Sophia's sisters, Larthena or Mary Frances {who may have been called by the nickname "Nannie"?}, so they must have died before Sophia, and also childless.] - A note in this Harlan Footprints also states that Calvin and Sophia HUDSON were in Whitley in 1900 with a Sophia HARRIS, cousin. - Surely this number of sons and daughters that survived to adulthood must have many descendants. - Any connections out there??? 1. Religious Petitions for Albemarle Co. and Other Items of Interest
    2. This is the website of American Memories sponsored by the Library of Congress http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/mdbquery.html (Or where you can seek refuge when you don't want to do those other tasks, or when you cannot sleep) Of interest to Albemarle Co. researchers (of early dates) are the Religious Petitions. Go down the list to the R's and check. Then you want to do a geographic search which will list the counties where these petitions originated, with the dates of the petitions. I have seen in one of the Albemarle petitions the signature of only one Harris male - John Harris - but perhaps I was skimming too fast. I did see signatures of allied Albemarle Co. families--Jouett, Shelton and Dalton. Oh, yes, and lots of McCord males. There may be some items of interest in the Papers of the Continental Congress also. Common folk who presented petitions to the Continental Congress MAY be indexed, as they are in John P. Butler's vast published index (publ. 1978) to the papers of the Continental Congress. And, of course, if your ancestor was a representative to that Congress, you certainly want to search for his name. Tell your friends who are interested in family history and also American history. Should you tell your kids? Only if you have several computers in the home--with separate internet access. Send the kids to the library which has computers! E.W.Wallace

    1. Pension Record - Rev War pensioners and widows
    2. To do it yourself research for Revolutionary War pension files: If you are near a large genealogical library or a University library, first try to determine whether they have a set of books edited by Virgil D. White. The name of the set of books is something like this: Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pensions..... There are four hefty volumes, with the last volume being the all-name index to the first three volumes. This essentially is an index to all of the names occuring in the films held by the National Archives on the subject listed. White will not give you the film number but his abstracts (listed alphabetically by surname) will give you some good genealogical information about the service man, his widow if applicable, his heirs if applicable, and goodness knows what else. Furthermore, it will give you the number of the pension or the widow's pension. (And White has also indexed other pension claims from other wars--he is important to genealogists.) Also, with luck, a University library near you (or some such LARGE library) may have the microfilms of the actual pension papers. Click around on some online catalogs of libraries near you. I believe the National Archives number for the pension records (Rev War) are numbered M-804. There are close to 3,000 reels of film, so most libraries do not have these films. The films are available on loan through your local FHCenter (if there is one near you) from Salt Lake City. Otherwise, you have to order the copies of the film from Washington DC--for about $37 (the last time I looked). In order to order the film from Salt Lake City, however, you have to know the number of the Salt Lake film. And that is a handicap. By clicking around the www.familysearch.org and searching the catalog, I finally stumbled upon where these films are cataloged. Veteran's Administration Go down the long list of topics until you find Revolutionary War ..... Click on that, and then you will find the films are listed alphabetically by surname. You want the film for your specific person, so don't do this search in a hurry! Revolutionary war pension and bounty-land-warrant application files Although the topi states there are bounty-land-warrant applications, when I ordered a hefty file from the National Archives (before the price rose so high), the bounty-land-warrant application was NOT included. I believe you have to request that separately. Live and learn!!! E.W.Wallace

    1. Heirs of Goodman Oldham
    2. Ira Harris III, a stalwart of this list, Harris-Hunters, has been listing some Missouri Marriages involving a Harris bride or a Harris groom. One of the marriages listed is that of Goodman Oldham thus: Nancy Harris to Goodman Oldham, January 19, 1841 - Chariton Co., MO For those interested in Goodman Oldham, whose roots were in Madison Co., KY, I highly recommend searching the archives of rootsweb for the Oldham rootsweb list, the posts of 2003. There is a biography of Goodman Oldham and then there is a transcript of a deed in Madison Co., KY which names a good many of his siblings. Goodman Oldham was deceased, and the deed indicates that his heirs are unknown. 3. Dear BHarris & listers, My William Harris was born in PA in 1798. His father or grandfather could have been from NJ or NY, or New England. That would be mid-1700's or thereabouts. If you do find a male HARRIS coming to PA before 1798, please let me know. thanks Holly Harris Jagger
