    1. Re: HARRIS-HUNTERS-D Digest V04 #95
    2. Hi, I have been searching for an Andrew Jackson Harris for several years. The DOB and time spent in TN. which you noted about your A.J. Harris is very interesting. I know from my Grandmother's Bible record (Grandmother is now 92) that my G-G-G Grandfather's name was Andrew Jackson Harris spouse unknown. I know that he had at least one child who was known as "Kit" Harris. Kit Harris married a Charlotte "Lottie" maiden name unknown. Kit and Lottie had at least one child named Charles B. Harris born about 1876 TN. Lottie and Charles B. are listed on the 1880 Knoxville, TN. Census. They are living in a household with several adult females and young children. I do not know if this was a boarding house or a family member's home. There are NO ADULT MALES in the household. I would like to share information and see if we have match. As you probably already know Monroe Co., TN. is next door to Knoxville. There was a line of Harris in Monroe that were from SC (I think). When was your Andrew J. Harris in Monroe? I don't live very far from there and might could find out some info. Please respond to kit666har@aol.com Shannon

    1. Harris DNA

    3. I just got back my first 12 markers from the Harris DNA test my dad took. it hasn't been posted yet on the familytree DNA site but I was looking over the results posted for other families and we match pretty closely to a few of them, my earliest ancestor that I have any info on is Andrew Jackson Harris b: Sept 7, 1858 in Tn probably, (some census say Ky) I have his death certificate and it lists his father as David Harris but no mothers name is given. Andrew lived in Monroe , Cumberland and Adair counties in Ky but the census listed his children as some of them being born in TN. Also on his death certificate it lists him as a member of the Tennessee Methodist church. I would like to ask every one to take a look at their family tree once again and see if you have an Andrew or a David that could possibly be these people. I would appreciate it very much and I know that there must be some one out there, until we get back the next 13 markers of the 25 marker test we wont know if we have a definite match with the DNA list. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. HARRIS Family
    2. Since there is a happy, constant stream of new "listers" joining our lists, I thought it was about time to again send out some basic info on my HARRIS family and see if someone has a chisel to help me start tearing down some of "brick walls". So here we go....looking for any info you may have starting with John Henry HARRIS, Born in Mifflin Co, PA -2/1804 9(of German parents)and died 2/1881 in PA. Married Julianna DIETZ (DEETZ) -I have the marriage cert, Their son, my GGGrandfather ,George H. HARRIS DOB 1/1830 in Mifflin Co, PA, moved with his brothers and sisters to Tusc. Co., OH in the mid 1800s , married Magdelena Rusemite in Tusc. Co; then moved to Daviess Co., IN, along with his increasing number of children, including my GGrandfather David H. HARRIS , and entered the Civil War, returned home to Daviess Co, IN where he died as a result of his WAR contracted TB. My GGrandmother, Magdelena, went on to marry a Henry Correll and then after Mr. Correll, she married Solomon Pershing (I have the License) still in Daviess Co., IN. After he died she moved to Indianapolis to live with her son David ( my GGrandfather). He in the meantime had married a Lucy Doughty 1/6/78 who died giving birth to their 1st child. He then married my Ggrandmother, Martha SOMMERS. David' DOB is 3/26/1851, DOD is 7/27/46. Martha's is DOB 6/11/1857, DOD 3/31/1940. If any of these family names or places match up with your info, please contact me ASAP. This is just a "snapshot"! I know all the brothers and sisters in each generation from John Henry HARRIS down the years to me. What I don't have is positive ID on John Henry HARRIS' dad. I know we are German, (many of my ancestors through WWII could hardly speak english). Anyway, if this rings a bell with anyone, please let me know, and PLEASE forgive the "MULTI-LIST" transmission, but I am a hunt a peck typist and this way is quicker. THANX FRED HARRIS

    1. Chancery Records in Virginia
    2. I copied this from a posting on the VA Southside list - a list almost as active as Harris-Hunters and full of information most of the time. Subj: [VA-ROOTS] Lunenburg Co. chancery records added to LVA's Chancery Records Index Date: 6/2/2004 10:05:02 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: chancery@LVA.LIB.VA.US (Chancery at LVA) Sender: VA-ROOTS@LISTLVA.LIB.VA.US (Research and writing about Virginia genealogy and family history.) Reply-to: chancery@LVA.LIB.VA.US (Chancery at LVA) To: VA-ROOTS@LISTLVA.LIB.VA.US Please excuse any cross postings. An initial offering of the index to the chancery records of Lunenburg Co. from 1749-1921 has been added to the Library of Virginia's Chancery Records Index Web site. The index in its current state does not include the image numbers pinpointing the exact location of a case on a reel of microfilm. As it stands, the index provides the researcher with a microfilm reel number. The researcher must then scroll through the reel to find the case for which he or she is looking. Work on providing image numbers and fine- tuning the data will be completed in a few months. At that time we will post the complete index. Lunenburg Co. is in the Southeastern Piedmont region which adds it to the records of three other localities available for searching in that region: Brunswick, Dinwiddie and Mecklenburg. The Lunenburg Co. records are microfilmed. You may view the microfilm at the Library of Virginia or the Lunenburg Co. Circuit Court clerk's office. There is no InterLibrary Loan copy of the microfilm. Please be sure to check the "What's Available" page of the Chancery Records Index to see all the localities that have indexes posted and records ready for viewing. To access the Chancery Records Index please visit http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/chancery/index.htm Please do not respond to the list with any questions you may have. This e- mail account is not registered to view list postings. To contact this account, please respond directly to chancery@lva.lib.va.us or use the "Contact" link on the site. This is my own Comment: Comment: I searched the Albemarle Co. list (not all Virginia counties appear on this website) for Harris which includes Harrison and found many persons listed with the two surnames--Harris and Harrison. One can search for both the complainant and the defendant, but first you must choose a county. Knowing that my Harris family lurked in Albemarle Co., I searched for Harrises in both categories. There is another unnamed category, which probably includes the names of any other Harrises which appear in the chancery record. For example, one Harris may have given a deposition in which he/she is neither a complainant nor a defendant, and perhaps he [she] would be listed. Most chancery records in Virginia do not seem to pertain to my families who skedaddled to such places as North Carolina and Kentucky, but once in a while one may find a relative has given a deposition giving some valuable information to help you link persons (perhaps those unamed females in your database) to others in your family. I hope you find some useful information. I personally thank the Commonwealth of Virginia for promoting this accessibility to their records--as they say, Virginia is where it all began! E.W.Wallace

    3. Willard Library, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana has an online database of Vanderburgh County marriages from 1920. From this database I collected all Harris names (11 pages) and the volume/page of the marriage books they are found on. I then placed the names in order based on volume/page. 1. Harris Males with Land on Doyle's River - Albemarle Co., VA
    2. Ira Harris III has posted a list of landowners of Albemarle Co. ca 1815, thus: ALBEMARLE COUNTY: Harris, ________, estate, of Hanover County Harris, Benjamin; Green Mountain; 18SW Harris, Henry T; Hickory Creek; 24SW Harris, Henry; Mechams River; 11N Harris, James, estate dower; Rock Creek; 14NW Harris, James; Moorman River; 13NW Harris, Joel; Doyls River; 16NW Harris, John, ?son of William; Green Creek; 19SW Harris, John, esquire; Green Mountain & Totier; 13S Harris, John, esquire; Warren; Harris, John; Green Creek; 20SW Harris, John; Ragged Mountain; 10SW Harris, Mary, Mrs dower =17NW Harris, Nathan =18NW Harris, Robert M.=17NW Harris, Robert; Hardware River; 10SW Harris, Schuyler, estate; south branch Hardware River; 18SW Harris, Thomas Harris, Thomas, and Joel; Mountain; 22NW Harris, Thomas; Totier Creek; 20S Harris, Thomas =17NW My comment: I suspect the person(s) who held land on Doyle's River may have been linked to some degree to [Major] Robert Harris, who died testate ca 1765 in Louisa Co. How they are linked, I have no idea. Two of Robert's sons, Tyree (who had removed to Orange Co. later part of which became Caswell Co., North Carolina many years earlier) and Christopher (who removed to Madison Co., KY ca 1787 and later) seem to have left no heirs in Albemarle Co. One son William seems to have died rather young, but he may have left heirs. Robert Jr. may have remained in Albemarle Co. These are some of the patents which [Major] Robert Harris received. A 1750 patent for Robert Harris reads as follows: Patent Bk 29-270: Robert Harris, 171a, Louisa Co. in the Fk of Doyl's R near the Ledge. 12 Jul 1750 (Mary Ruth Northrop, "Virginia Land Patent Book 29, Part II, 12 Jul 1750-3 Nov 1750, Pages 259-365," MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, VOL. 30, p. 296.) Although M. H. Harris states that about 1752, Harris disposed of his property in Louisa Co. and moved to Brown's Cove on Doyle's River in Albemarle Co., (formed 1744 from Goochland Co.), we find these patents for land in both Albemarle and in Louisa Co. during the same time period 1751 and 1752: Patent Bk 30-492: Robert Harris, 400 acs. Albemarle Co. on the Top of a Mountain an Arm of the blue Ledge; 5 August 1751. 40 Shill. (Dennis Hudgins, "Virginia Land Patent Book 30, 1 Jun 1750-16 Nov 1752," MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, Vol. 31, No. 1, p. 83) Patent Bk 31-195: Robert Harris, 400 acs. Louisa Co. on both Sides of Rocky Cr; 15 Sep 1752 ... 40 Shill. (Dennis Hudgins, "Virginia Land Patent Book 31, 20 Sep 1751-10 Sep 1755, Part I," MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, Vol. 31, No. 2, p. 145) Robert Harris wrote his will there, in Albemarle Co., and died there, according to Harris. Another account, however, states that Harris resigned his official position as surveyor in Albemarle Co. and removed to his former home in Louisa Co. Two patents verify that Robert Harris patented land on Doyles Cr. or River and that one of the patents was on the county line: Two patents recorded in Patent Bk 32: Robert Harris, 200 acs., Albemarle Co. on Doyles Cr. and the brs. thereof near the foot of the great Mountains, on the line dividing the Counties of Albemarle and Louisa [N65 degrees W]; 6 Dec 1753, p. 334. 20 Shill. Robert Harris, 521 acs. Louisa Co. near the blue Ridge of Mountains on the Waters of Doyles Riv., on the South fork of sd Riv.; 6 Dec 1753, p. 334. 35 Shill. (171 acs. part formerly Gtd. unto the sd Robert Harris by Pat. 12 Jul 1750 and 350 acs. the Residue never before gtd.) (Mary Ruth Northrop, "Virginia Land Patent Book 323, 16 Nov 1752-15 Dec 1753," MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, V. 31, No. 4, p. 334) These notes were made before the publication of the last four volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers by the Virginia Genealogical Society, Richmond. The patents are also online--I am more of a bookish person myself! Please post any comments or questions to one of these Harris websites, Please. E.W.Wallace

    3. Sue, I once explored the possibility that our Harrises and Coopers both came from Duplin County. The Coopers also tie in with a GUY family which appears in Duplin. There are men named Guy in the Cooper family down to this day. (We were looking at the same period as you, late 1700's.) We even visited the county and the local genealogical library which is/was housed in the family home of an elderly gentleman. Could not find that positive connection we needed. Hope you have better luck. 2. Ira L. Harris III
    3. Source: 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners & Gazetteer Volume 1: Central Region by Roger G. Ward In 1782 the General Assembly of Virginia enacted new tax laws which created within each county an enumeration of land and certain personal property. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courhouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls. Each entry is listed as: Surname, name, personal identifiers (if any); location/place-name of land; miles/direction from the 1815 courthouse. If multiple owners are listed for a property, the listing is duplicated under each of the owner's surnames; when multiple owners share a common surname, the property is only listed once. When a landowner had land at more than one location/place-name, the miles/direction listing for each parcel is in the same sequence as the location listing. In a few cases where a landowner had "many" parcels, the miles/direction notation is attached to the location listing. The reader is encouratged to consider the information here-in as an "outline" of early landowners in Virginia rather than a "text" due to the year-to-year variation in information provided to the clerk (or recorded by the clerk). The reader is encouraged to create his/her own neighborhood maps using this 1815(and supporting) information.
