    3. There's a Leander is this Harrison Co., KY census book by Sistler. Three brothers from my Harris line in Orange Co., VA lived in Harrison Co. in the 1830-40 period. I'm still working on it, but a couple of these in the 1850 may be remnants of those brothers. The William & Letitia Bayless Harris (living seperately in 1850) were m 1846 Harrison Co, KY--the Hannah living in Wm's household could be Hannah Stokes m 1821 Brockman Harris (son of Lindsay Harris d 1803 Orange Co. 3. Hi Pam, I noticed the things that you mentioned in your note when I last updated the site. I really dont have many answers for you. I only report what the folks have sent into me to post. The folks who have matches are contacted by FamilyTreeDNA when the matches show up and they can contact each other. If folks notice that there is something like the William Harris discrepancy on the site... and they contact me I try my best to put them in contact with each other if I can and if they have not already been informed. If your not part of the Harris DNA project you can still join the list where a good many of the Harris DNA participants are members. That is the Harris-DNA list at rootsweb. You can join by sending an email with the word subscribe in the body of the email to Harris-DNA-L-request@rootsweb.com Jeff Harris > Subject: HARRIS DNA WEBSITE > Date: Tue, 22 Jun 2004 14:53:22 -0400 > From: "PAM" <pamstone@digital.net> > To: HARRIS-HUNTERS-L@rootsweb.com > > Hi, all, > > Can anyone tell me who runs this site? > > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisdna/results.htm > > There is no contact person that I can find on the page. > Can someone help, please? > > How can persons with DNA matches that show mutual ancestors > listed on this page contact each other? > > BTW, the William HARRIS listed twice on this webpage is listed > incorrectly---he is the William Harris that d. 1848 in Wilkes > Co., NC. 1. Dates for Colonial Ancestors
    2. One of the subscribers comments that he KNOWS the dates of birth and death of his ancestors. I think that is absolutely wonderful, and I think that person is indeed fortunate. He must have New England ancestry!!! Those of us who have Colonial Virginia ancestry (or ancestors from any other southern Colony) do NOT have exact dates. Most of us have to use *circa [ca.]* or *about* because few if any tombstones still exist; few church records of births exist; and so on. If I remember the first official birth records for states such as Virginia and Kentucky were prior to the Civil War -- ca. 1852 -- and the Civil War ended that practice. I do think that subscriber is indeed fortunate!!! E.W.Wallace One of the first lectures given in genealogy classes is how to estimate the dates of births for certain persons.

    3. Hi, everyone, I installed Norton Internet protection on my computer ealier this month---today I just discovered that all of the mail from the Harris-Hunters & Harris-ColVa lists for the last week or so was sitting unexamined in a special folder, considered by Norton as "Spam". [This means I have missed a bunch of postings all the way around...] I have reconfigured Norton to accept the mailings from several lists I am on, and should not have any difficulty receiving the mail from these lists any more, but it may take me a while to sort out these undiscovered E-mails to & from the lists. 3. Listers, My father just submitted DNA for this project last week. Glad he was willing, we both would love to solve this puzzle we've been working on for the past twenty eight years. I was quite impressed with the confidentiality they offer, and the ease of the test. Below find the 'front page' sites for the Harris DNA project. From these two locations you should find the coordinator's email address, and the information on comparison available. He was very helpful in answering my questions. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisdna/ http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Q41837 <http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=Q41837&special=true> &special=true regards, Holly Harris Jagger

I can only speak for our Harris sample, but I expect other people have similar gaps in their knowledge - that's one of the reasons we're so eager to link to other Harris families by DNA. My best estimate of our earliest ancestor's date of birth and birthplace comes from the 1850 census. If I knew exactly when and where he was born, I'd probably also know his parents, and then he wouldn't be the earliest known ancestor. -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ (Davie, Forsyth, and Stokes Co. 2. Hi All. Just curious..........Does Ancestry.Com help support these DNA sites? The same Ancestry.com that constantly bombards me with pop up ads when I am doing my research? The same Ancestry.com that charges me a subscription fee to get data about MY family? Am I misjudging them? What are they doing with the data that many share with them other than lining their pockets at our expense. We all know that there are many places to gather information on our families that is free, so should we support them? Someone enlighten me. Thanks, John Claude Gummoe from the Robert Harris/Elizabeth Boughey line.

He was in Culpeper, VA in 1781, and moved to Surry, NC, then on to Wilkes. I notice that one of William's descendants that our researching group has proven MATCHES EXACTLY the Robert HARRIS b. 1635 in Wales [DNA Kit #11758], the Thomas HARRIS b. ca. 1808 in North Carolina [DNA Kit #10082], and the Brantley HARRIS b. 1818 [DNA Kit #12229] on this webpage. 2. PAM
    3. Hi, all, I can help sort out a couple of these Harrises in this area. William "Herris" the family I have been researching, along with several other great researchers. He was born about 1750- 1752, we are almost positive in VA; was in Culpeper Co., VA in 1781, location unknown in 1782 [not on tax lists in Culpeper]; moved to Surry after the Revolutionary War, then to Wilkes Co.; moved to Ashe Co., NC about 1796 and stayed there until about 1813, when he moved back to Wilkes. He filed for Rev War Pension in Wilkes in 1819 & 1820, and proved service of 8 years in the war. He lived to be a very old guy, dying in 1848. His wife was Sarah [maiden name unknown; d. bef. 1830]. Their children were: (1) Silas, b. 1775 [m. Edith "Ede" FRANKLIN, prob. dau. of John FRANKLIN of Stokes & Surry Cos., NC]; (2) [UNK. Dau. {Elizabeth?}], b. ca. 1786; (3) Mary, b. 1789 [d.s.p.]; (4) Lucinda, b. 1790 [m. Daniel FIELD{S}]; (5) Squire, b. 1792 [m. Mary Ann PHILLIPS] [moved to Kentucky]; (6) [UNK. son {John? Joseph?}], b. ca. 1796; (7) Margaret, b. 1797 [m. Joseph FIELD{S}]; (8) James, b. 1799 [m. Frances "Franky" FIELD{S}]; (9) Jacob, b. ca. 1802 [m. Virginia Jane CANADY/KENNEDAY/KENNEDY] [also moved to KY]. --- Robert Harris on this census came from Albemarle Co., VA, and was the son of Robert HARRIS & Mourning GLENN of Albemarle/Louisa Cos., VA (and brother of Christopher of Madison Co., KY.) Robert's wife was Lucretia BROWN, the daughter of Benjamin BROWN of Albemarle/Louisa. Robert purchased land on the Ararat River in Surry in 1778. He wrote his will in 1806 and died in 1809. His will makes no mention of Lucy, so she must have prececeased him. His children were (1?) Elijah [m. Mary/Carrie FORKNER, dau. of William & Susanna FORKNER]; (2?) Robert Jr. [d. bef. 1806], left heirs; (3?) Tyre [Rhodes Harris, moved to KY & wrote the family history]; (4?) Bezeleel Brown; (5?) Bernice [male]; (6?) Lucretia "Lucy" [m. HEAD, poss. William HEAD]; (7?) Martha "Patsy" [m. TURNER; d. bef. 1806, left heirs; (8?) Nancy [m. BURCH]; (9?) Nancy [m. Ratliff BOON]; (10?) Sarah [m. David BLACKWELL; Sarah d. bef. 1806, leaving heirs]. --- Moses, Jonathan & Matthew are mysteries. Jonathan, at one point, lived in what was then Wilkes Co., but what is now Ashe Co. They all left the area after a few years. Pam pamstone@digital.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ira L.
