Hello, I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to help me with my quandary here! According to "They Went Thataway" by Charles Hughes Hamlin, James Harris of Rockingham Co, NC deeded 2 tracts of land on Widgeon Creek in Patrick County, VA to Reuben Harris of Patrick Co, dated November 1803 (Patrick County Deed Book 2, p. 271). On March 13, 1829, James Harris and James Gibson provided surety for the marriage of my ancestors John Bryant and Nancy Massey. Finally, on Sept. 30, 1831, James and Nancy Harris deeded 35 acres in Patrick Co to John Briant/Bryant (immediate neighbors: Joseph Vaughan, William Via and David Crews); this land ended up in the hands of Isham Craddock as of July 1840 (Patrick Co Deed Book 8, p. 12 -- I have a copy of this deed and will transcribe it for the list shortly). I suspect that this James Harris (I believe his wife was Nancy Craddock?) is the same man who provided bond for the marriage of John Bryant and Nancy Massey, but I am wondering if he also connects to the gentleman of the same name on the 1803 deed mentioned above? The fact that James Harris helped pay for the Bryant-Massey marriage indicates to me some sort of familial relationship (either by blood or through marriage) to the Bryants or the Masseys, and I am wondering if anyone on the list has any sort of information about a possible Harris-Bryant or Harris-Massey connection, as well as whether or not the earlier James Harris and the later James Harris were kin or even the same person? Thanks very much for your time and for any help that anyone may possibly be able to give me here! Kind regards, Rebecca Olenchak jjbb343@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

I suspect--but, at this point, I cannot prove that your Benjamin Franklin Harris of Missouri has roots in Madison Co., KY but that is a likely place to further your research--after you have searched a few more possible records in Missouri. I have found a good bit of information on my Madison Co. folks (so much that I have not been able to digest it all) in the deeds of Madison Co., KY. Fortunately, one of my local libraries has the films of both the Madison Co. grantor and grantee indexes--nicely typed and alphabetized, thank you. These indexes alone sometimes help me to figure out relationships, discover heirs, find deeds of gift, and mortgages, etc. Does Platte Co., MO have similar films of deed indexes? Check the familysearch.org website for the FHL Catalog. I am sharing some notes I have made on a John Franklin Harris, but the evidence seems NOT to directly link him to your Platte Co., MO Harrises. JOHN FRANKLIN HARRIS. (b. ca 1811-death date prior to May 1842) Son of Overton Harris and Nancy Oldham of Madison Co., KY. [This would make him an older brother to my ancestress, Carlisle Harris, one of the younger daughters of Overton Harris and Nancy Oldham. Overton Harris died testate in Madison Co., KY ca 1827.] Grantor indexes of Madison Co. (DB X-205 dated Oct 16, 1837) indicate he later may have been called Franklin and he may have had a wife Katherine. He probably died intestate, as there was an administration as indicated by these probate and administration records of Madison Co., KY (SL film 183269) pp. 82-83 J. F. Harris admr Settlement [in margin] 2nd day of May 1842 Being called upon by Christopher Harris and Napoleon G. Tevis administrators of John F. Harris decd to state & settle their accounts as such we have appointed this day at the office of R. Runyon in Richmond to perform that duty. By 1839, there is a notation in the grantor deeds that the heirs of John F. have joined other heirs of Overton Harris (their father) in selling property, a lot in Richmond to Thomas G. Little. It appears that John F. was now deceased. More research is needed. Bill and Kathy Vockery in CEMETERY RECORDS OF MADISON COUNTY [KENTUCKY], Vol. 1, Northern Section, p. 52, show John F. Harris is buried in the Overton Harris Cemetery and that he was born 1811, but his death date is not given. The Vockerys indicate (as may the gravestone) that he was the eldest son of Overton & Nancy Harris. However, there is also a gravesite for a Harris daughter born 1811. Does this signify that John Franklin was a twin? Or was he born later in the year than the unnamed daughter? John Franklin seems to have reached adulthood as indicated by a couple of marriage bonds in Madison Co. John Franklin seemed to be bondsman for one or two marriages in Madison Co. KY: for his sister Elizabeth and for his brother Solon M. Jul 1837. Whether he himself was married is unknown. Tevis, Joseph H. & Elizabeth Harris; 17 Aug 1829; John Franklin Harris, bondsman; Nancy Harris, mother of bride. (Was he an underage bondsman, or was he born before his parents were married in 1810? If born in 1811, the year after the parents' marriage, he would have been age 21 in 1832 and not in 1829. His father had recently died, however, and he may have been acting as an older man.) Harris, Solon M. & Sally Ann Miller 25 July 1837. Robert Miller gave consent, but his relationship to the bride is unknown. Solon Harris was John Franklin's brother. Question to you: What do the censuses show for your Missouri Harrises? Are any of them born in Kentucky? I know from e-mails and correspondence of various persons that some of Nancy Oldham Harris's cousins migrated to Platte Co., MO. It seemed to attract a lot of Kentuckians. Have you used the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website to determine whether a patent or patents were issued to Harris family members in Platte Co., MO. For an early county in Mississippi, I used the BLM website and typed in my very common name. I could tell from the county given on the patent index whether these were my common-named folks. The website gives a good idea of when they were first granted land by the Federal Government. Use google to find the BLM website--if the URL contains the phrase *gov*, then you are on the right track. I do little, if any, Missouri research, as my Kentucky folks headed to Texas!!!! Too cold or too hot in Missouri, although Texas is one of the hotspots of the nation! If you think there is a link, I will try to help you--but I am terrifically busy with rearranging a household after moving a cluttered household!!! E.W.Wallace

Dear HH, Recently I talked my local family history library into ordering the books by Timothy Rackley on Granville and Nash counties in North Carolina. She tried to order the books by contacting Mr. Rackley on the website (and telephone numbers) that had been given a while back on this website. She could not get through to him. Does anyone know how to contact Mr. Rackley or where his books might be found for purchase? Any help is appreciated. Ira L. Harris III Evansville, Indiana A descendant of Claiborne "Ned" Harris
Can anyone help me. I have been working for 34 years gathering data on my family to publish a book for my children. The book is nearing completion, but I don't feel it is not done or can it be published until I can find data on Benjamin Franklin Harris. He is my son's paternal great grandfather. He married Barbara Ann Sutton 29 July 1852 in Platte Co. MO He died less than 5 years later 18 Feb/Mar 1857 in Buchanan Co. MO. During that time period he had 2 children, John Franklin Harris b 5 Nov 1854/5 who married Flora B Thornhill in 1889, and Missouri Belle b Dec 1856. who married William Morrow Shortly after Benjamin's death Barbara Ann married John T. Foster. Platte Co. History says Benjamin was from Madison Co. KY. He was living alone in Lee, Platte Co. MO in the 1850 census age 28. John Franklin Harris received a inheritance from B. F. Harris and a Wiley Harris that his step father, John Foster, evidently embezzled according to court records. If anyone could shed any light on this family, I would be delighted. Eleanor Homewood
Claude, I have a Fielding Harris who was sometimes known as Fields. b. 1804 in Va. but moved into Hardin Co. Ky. and then to IL. Can't find a connection back any farther than him. Probably no connection but you don't hear the name Fielding too much, so thought I would mention it. Barbara Harris Hewitt Ky.
A handwritten page, author unknown, has been found among family papers that has created a mystery. It is entitled "Aunt Ann" witch was the name used by many for my grandmother, Missouri Ann HARRIS Ferguson. the following is from that paper: *********************************************************** I haver a Missouri A Harriss born 1832. Chuck, Thanks for the response to my query. The time frame seems to fit for there to be some connection and the Surnames William and Fielder fit and I see that there is a James in a subsequent generation. It may well be that my William Fielder Harris' father, if he was the James Russell Harris of the old paper, could be a brother. He would have had to go to Kentucky at some time as that is the place of birth of my William Fielder. Do you have the parents and siblings of your William? Any further help would be much appreciated. Dear Harris Hunters, A handwritten page, author unknown, has been found among family papers that has created a mystery. It is entitled "Aunt Ann" witch was the name used by many for my grandmother, Missouri Ann HARRIS Ferguson. the following is from that paper: "Aunt Ann 1. Ancestry gr grf James Russell Harris In boat with Wash when crossed the Delaware. Had 40-50 skillets with iron lids long legs. Baked potatoes in ashes and fried meat & corn bread with salt & water. Bitter cold. Wash stood up to encourage men to get there in time for break. Washington asked for a man to take message. Hadn't had breakfast. Grabbed a corn pone and cold meat jumps on horse. Lost little finger at Brandywine. An arm at Trenton. Exhausted and carried off field at Ticonderoga. His son William Fielder Harris - born 1797 - - - -" We have excellent data on the life of William F. Harris. my g,g,grandfather who was identified in the Census of 150, "60, "70 and 1880 as being born in Kentucky in 1797. His middle name was recorded on land grant papers in Indiana as Fielding but as Fielder in several family reports. He married Maria (Mary) (Polly) Micklesbury in Shelby County, TN after his service in the War of 1812. I have his marriage and military records. He died in Willow Springs, Howell Co., MO in 1885. Does anyone have a James Russell Harris in their line who might be my missing link? Does anyone have a Fielding or Fielder who married a Harris? Any and all help appreciated. Claude A. Dear researchers, Is anyone able to help me establish the identity of one Samuel Williams of Madison Co., KY, who in 1840 and perhaps earlier was guardian to a couple of young daughters of the deceased Overton Harris (d. testate ca 1827) and his wife Nancy Oldham, dau. of Richard *Ready-Money* Oldham? Was Williams related? A possible connection: Nancy's deceased mother, the first wife of Richard R/M Oldham, was the former Ursley Duke Williams (the widow of Reuben Peoples, first husband). Ursley was the daughter, one of several, of Henry Williams and his wife Elizabeth of early Caswell Co., NC. She and Richard, along with many others of Caswell Co., NC, migrated soon after their marriage. On the other hand: the given name Samuel is not usual in this particular Williams family of Caswell Co., who had roots in colonial Virginia. From Madison Co., KY Court Order Book H-p 59 [August 10, 1840] [SL film 0183277] A settlement with Samuel Williams Guardian to Carlisle Harris Orphan of Overton Harris Decd was returned by the commissioners [of?] account and ordered lay over until next Court... exceptions or approval] [photocopy is dim] A settlement with Samuel Williams Guardian to Nancy Harris Orphan of Overton Harris Decd was returned by the Commissioners of accounts and ordered to lay over until next court for exceptions or approval. Hypothesis: It is suspected, but not proved satisfactorily, that Joseph Williams and Daniel Williams of early Madison Co., KY MAY have been brothers of Ursley. Daniel's presence is questionable, but there are records in Caswell Co., NC that indicate Joseph Williams had relocated to Madison Co., KY. E.W.Wallace gr-gr granddaughter of Carlisle Harris
