Ira and other HHs, I have a James Harris who was supposed to be from Mecklenburg County, VA who has become a real brick wall. I need ideas. Rutherford County, NC Deeds. 8 Oct 1796 James Harris purchased 100 acres from Benjamin Wilkerson (Wilkinson) for 80 pounds. He is listed in the deed as being from Mecklenburg County, VA. At the October 1799 Rutherford County Pleas and Quarter Session, Isaac White proved the deed. This James was not listed on the 1790 census for Rutherford County but was for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records. He died in 1829 and his will was proven there. Based on the 1800 and 1810/1820 census' he was born between 1756 and 1765. His wife at the time of his death was Patience Unknown and there is an indication that he was also married to a Sally Spivey, a neighbor. Family tradition, based on a 1904 journal written by James' grandson (1822 - 1908), has James as the brother of Isham G. Harris' father (father would be Isham Green Harris). Isham G. Harris was the TN Governor. This family tradition does not match the West Harris Family information. They have another James Harris who move to Tenn. Maybe this James Harris from Mecklenburg County, VA was actually a great uncle of the TN Governor. It just seems odd that this grandson, who was alive at the time Isham G. Harris was governor, would have indicated his grandfather was the uncle, if he wasn't. I would love to find and prove James' parents. In the same area of NC that he settled and reared his family there was a William Harris who had a large family. One of William's sons was the bondsman for one of James' sons. However, there is nothing that supports a connection between these two men. Any thoughts or suggestions on this brick wall? Connie Bradshaw

I made an error in my post yesterday. I neglected to add that on March 13, 1829, James Harris and James Gibson provided surety for the marriage of my ancestors John Bryant and Nancy Massey in Rockingham County, NC. Then, 2 years later, in Patrick County, VA, James and Nancy Harris sold 35 acres of land there to John Briant/Bryant. To my knowledge, all of my Bryants have lived mostly in Patrick Co (on land that is now Fairystone Park and under Philpott Lake) so I don't understand why John and Nancy would have married outside that county in any case? My apologies to the list for not having done a better job of proofreading my original post! Many thanks for your time. Rebecca Olenchak jjbb343@earthlink.net

Charles, Many thanks for your most helpful response to my query -- I apologize for not acknowledging it sooner, but I subscribe to the list in digest form and just received it this morning. This information about the two different James Harrises in Patrick County is very helpful indeed, especially the names of the younger James' parents. This is new data for me, and will be invaluable to me as I continue to try to solve my Harris-Bryant-Massey mystery. Again, many thanks for your help, and good hunting! I can't answer your question about a relationship between James Harris and John Bryant or Nancy Massey, but perhaps it will help to know that there were two different James Harrises in Patrick County in the early 19th century. The first was the son of William and Sarah Steele Harris. He was born 1752 in Buckingham County VA and married a woman named Patte on 10 May 1775 in that county. He died 3 Oct 1836 in Floyd County KY. He had a brother named Reuben, so I suppose this is the James mentioned in the deed of Nov 1803. This James Harris is said to have moved to Kentucky about this time. The second James Harris was the son of Samuel and Sarah Elizabeth Hollandsworth Harris. He was born between 1801 - 1804 and married Nancy Craddock on 23 Feb 1826 in Patrick County. He died after 1864. I suppose this is the James Harris mentioned in Patrick County records after 1820. I do not have the names of his four children's spouses; that may be where the Bryant or Massey name comes in. I do not know what, if any, relationship there was between William and Samuel Harris, and your posting is the first suggestion I've seen that either James was from Rockingham County NC. Charles Harris
