    1. Elijah Harris b. 1800
    2. Vernor Harris
    3. I tried to send this before, but it doesn't look like it went through. Please excuse if it is a duplication Can anyone help me find the parents/ancestors of my gg-grandfather Elijah Harris? I know some of you are tired of hearing this, but I have been looking for his parents/ancestors for over 40 years. I have proven that he is not the son of many individuals, one for example is Tyree Harris. All the probable candidates end up marrying the wrong person or dying in the wrong place. I have joined the Harris YDNA group, and have no matches there. I have about decided that Elijah may have been illegitimate. Any help would be appreciated. Vernor Elijah Harris was born circa 1800 in VA. He married Eliza Jane Smith, daughter of William Smith and Sarah Witt, circa 1821 in Rockingham Co, NC; I am unsure of where they were married. However since Jane lived in Rockingham Co., NC, I consider it most probable that they married there. The marriage date is based on the birth of their first son Henry Fountain Harris. He died circa 1875 in Tamaroa, Perry Co, IL; Sometime between 1860 and 1870, Elijah and Jane moved to Southern IL where Jane died, and was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Tyrone Tws., Franklin Co IL.) Elijah returned to Pulaski Co Ky to live with his daughter, (this is confirmed by the 1870 census of Pulaski Co KY) then Elijah left Pulaski Co KY and returned to Southern IL again so he could be buried next to Jane. However at the time of his death, the roads were so bad that they could not get him back to the Greenwood Cemetery, and he was buried somewhere north of DuQuoin, Perry Co IL. and his grave was not marked. The first time I find Elijah Harris is in the 1840 census of Lee Co VA, where he is shown as head of household with the following residents: 3 Males 5 and under 10 1 Male 15 and under 20 1 Male 30 and under 40 2 Females under 5 1 Female 10 and under 15 1 Female 30 and under 40. He is found in the 1850 census of the 31st. District of Lee Co VA Elijah is next found in the 1860 census of Tazewell Post Office, Claiborne Co TN. Elijah is next found in the 1870 census of Pulaski Co KY living with his daughter and son-in-law. According to the census reports, Elijah could neither read or write. I have not found a record of him ever owning property. He was a Farmer. Children of Elijah Harris and Eliza Jane Smith were as follows: 2 i. Henry Fountain2 Harris was born in Sep 1822 in Rockingham Co, NC. 3 ii. Millie Harris (30); Variations of name: Melinda, Melley, Mildred was born circa 1824 in TN.17 4 iii. Eliza J. Harris (28)20,21 was born circa 1827. 5 iv. Samuel Harris was born on 13 Oct 1828 in KY. 6 v. William F. Harris Sr. was born in Feb 1834 7 vi. George Washington Harris was born on 12 Apr 1836 in Knox Co, 8 vii. Sarah Ann Harris was born on 26 Feb 1837. 9 viii. Martha Harris was born in 1839. 10 ix. Mary Armina Harris was born on 2 May 1842 in Tazewell, Claiborne Co, TN. 11 x. Margaret Elvina Harris was born on 2 May 1842 in Tazewell, Claiborne Co, TN. 12 xi. John Harris was born circa 1843 13 xii. Cerelda Harris was born on 24 Jan 1846 14 xiii. Ellendor Harris was born in May 1848 15 xiv. Celia Harris was born on 9 Jun 1851 in Lee Co, _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement? 1. Harris migrating west through PA?
    2. Diane Hettrick
    3. My HARRIS family has been such a brick wall. All I have are teasing references to the Harris family being "fine old New England stock." The census and some of the biographies are consistent that Daniel (or was it John) Harris was born in Massachusetts and he married a woman who was born in Pennsylvania. Her name may have been Mercy BOKER, or then again Rebecca BOOHER. Daniel Mathias "D.M." HARRIS, the son of the couple who were born in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, was born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio in 1821 (just after the census was taken), and one of the stories said that his parents "died within a month of each other when he was 9." Presumably that was in 1830, just before the census was taken. I found a Harris family in 1820 in Dayton that could be his - if his father is named Isaac. He was apparently handed around to various families (Dayton? Indiana) until he was old enough to strike out on his own (13? 15?). After that he is pretty well documented. I would like to know who else is researching Harris in New England, Pennsylvania, and definitely in Dayton, Ohio! 1. southern male Harris migrating west through PA?
    2. Holly Jagger
    3. Listers, After receiving the 12-marker results from the Harris dna project, I am led to ask-- do any of you southern Harris descendants know of a line that migrated through PA on their way west?? Dp any New England Harris descendants know of a line that migrated west to PA, perhaps moving onward and westward still? We await results from the upgrade to 25 markers, and that may help us somewhat. I was quite surprised to find perfect matches with 12 markers to Harris males with obvious southern roots... Virginia, etc. Very interesting! One line with which we would like to compare/contrast dna results, is that of THomas Harris b. 1618 Gloucester, England, d. 1687 Ipswich, Essex, MA. who married Martha LAKE b. 1623 North Benfleet, Essex, England. He was son of Thomas Harris/Elizabeth HILLS (Gloucestershire, England). Branches of the 'tree' would have closely related dna, and I imagine it would be feasible to sort them out, eventually. If anyone is of this NE line, or knows of a line moving westward through PA, please let me know. Thank you! regards Holly

    1. Re: [HH] Two William Harrises who died 1678
    2. I think there is some confusion in the following item: "1)Wm Harris who wrote his will 1 Feb 1678 and probated 20 Apr 1678." The information I have is that Wm Harris wrote his will on 20 Apr 1678, and it was probated on 1 Feb 1678. I know that sounds impossible, but remember that at that time the new year did not begin until March. Thus 1 Feb 1678 was 1 Feb 1679 by the modern calendar. These dates are consistent with Major William Harris's death on 23/24 Aug 1678 and do not suggest that these were two different Wm. Harrises. Charles Harris

    3. I am looking for information on the parents and grandparents of my ggrandfather, James Benjamin Harris. He was born in approximately 1859 in Marshall County, Illinois. His death certificate list his fathers name as Joe Harris. I have note been able to find any information about him until his marriage in 1884 to Anna Elizabeth Jeffries. The marriage took place in Pike County, Missouri. I found a James Benjamin Harris who moved to Illinois from New York in the 1820s. That James Benjamin had a brother Joe. But I haven't been able to establish any connection. Any ideas will be appreciated. James Harris

    1. James Harris, Rockingham County, NC
    2. Looking for the parents of James W. HARRIS of Rockingham County, NC. He was born in 1805 died 1863 in Cherokee Co. Tx. Any information would be sincerely appreciated. Here is what is known: His son, Wootson Daniel HARRIS was born May 31, 1831, mother unknown. James married Emily WHITTEMORE February 20, 1832 in Rockingham Co. NC. We have no further information on other children of James. I have found Wootson in Columbia County, Ark 1860 census, 1870 Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana census, 1880 McLennan County, Texas census where he died in 1900. Have not found James or Wootson on the 1850 census, but still searching in NC, TN and ARK. Wootson married 1st Mary FRANKS, who had Charles Edward, Augustus Henry, Virginia, Mary, Hugh Henry, Samuel Thomas and Wootson Daniel. All born in Arkansas according to census records. Mary died in 1867. Wootson married 2nd Laura T. NEIL ANDERSON who died the same year they married in 1872. He married 3rd to Mary Ellen CLINE. They had Mary Rosalie, James Wootson, Laura Safronia, Margaret Esther, Robert Mercer, James Watson, Benjamin Stanley, William Virgil, Jessey Cline, Stephen Daniel, Mary Ellen and Joe. Most of the children were born in McLennan County, Texas. Sincerely, Betty

    3. I must have been tired last night when I posted my note. I meant to say Elijah Harris was the son of Claiborn Harris. (This point I agree with!) What I don't agree with (Yet,) is the relationship between Claiborn who died in Bibb County and Claiborn who lived in Jefferson County AL and later in Pontotoc County, MS. Sorry for the mistake. 3. Vernor, I agree with most of the information posted about Claiborn T Harris; I only saw a few details that I believe are not accurate. Elijah Harris was the son of Elijah; this information was stated on his marriage record. It was one of the few marriage records that has a statement of relationship on it. (None of mine were so lucky.) Claiborn apparently accompanied his son to obtain his marriage license, requesting that a license be given to his son. He may have had a previous marriage since there was a license for Elijah to marry a woman named Neaty Wheatly 11/17/1833. I don't know whether she died or they divorced. It was pretty hard to obtain a divorce so chances were that she was deceased. As for the rest of the children, its my assumption that they included George, John, Mariah, Elizabeth, Sarah and Lucinda. (All of them except Malinda.) One of my rainy day projects has been to go through the entire Jefferson County Marriage record (earliest records through about 1900) and try and identify which Harris adult / child went with each Harris parent. Some of them are easy and some not so easy. Some just showed up for marriage and then disappeared. In those cases, mainly I find out where the Justice of the Peace or the Minister of the Gospel who performed the ceremony lived and then find out which Harris family lived in the same area. Most of the time this works but it doesn't necessarily account for the blended families (orphaned children) of relatives and so on. Needless to say, I'm still working on the project -- won't finish for another 25 years. Fortunately, Claiborn's 1850 census record has most of his children living around him -- strong indication of relationship but not proof. One of the things that I can't obtain are South Carolina records. So, if there were records from Pendleton District. SC., I can't see them because South Carolina apparently doesn't allow microfilm to be loaned to individual Family History Centers. (I'm not sure why?) 3. Ira, I know that I have probably expressed this thought before, but something about this particular family history really bothers me. There just isn't enough information to link both Claiborns together. They may be related but I haven't seen any conclusive proof. In the coming weeks I'm going to order a few of the microfilms available from Bibb County and find out if there was any other pertinent information besides from what I now have. I intended to do this long before now, but haven't had time. Also, the information regarding Daniel and Susan Harris more or less proves that Malinda Harris (who was married to Charles Kelley) was not a daughter of Claiborn. Although I don't have a will or probate record, the Confederate census states that Robert Marion Kelley's mother (Malinda) was the daughter of Daniel and Sarah Harris. Although I don't think the mother part was correct, I believe her mother was in fact, Susan Harris. The Justice of the Peace who married them was Benjamin F. Harris; his residence can be proven through land and census records. He lived closer to Shelby County than where Claiborn lived. Actually, I haven't figured out where CT Harris lived but I don't think it was anywhere close. Just let me know if you want copies of these records. Kris -----Original Message----- From: Ira L. (the record was unclear and looked like Araminta) but I have a note that says Cornelia) Robert W. age 1 MS, and Josephus Powell age 26 Farmer b. TN. I don't know who Josephus Powell was. Also it puzzles me why they had 2 children named Robert. Robert Park Harris' first wife's name could have been Charlotte, Patsy, Alice or Dorothy Goodrich. These were named as under age when the will was made in 1818. Dickson County TN Will Book A 1804-1856 Quarter Session Dickson Co. Tn. Jan Term 1824 Concerning will of James Goodrich. Dorrel Y. Harris and Robert P. Harris subscribing witnesses thereto swore in open Court that said James Goodrich was sane and in a disposing mind when he executed his will and he signed in their presence. Recorded Oct. 20, 1825. Dorrel Young Harris and Robert P. Harris witnessed will of James Goodrich Aug. 29, 1818 That's all I can find on Robert Park Harris. I haven't checked the Arkansas records to see if he went there when the others did. He may have gone to Texas or could have stayed in MS. Thanks for your information. Sarah

    1. Miscellaneous Claiborn Harris; Bibb County, AL
    2. harris220
    3. This is a list of some or all of the children listed in the probate records of Claiborn Harris who lived and or died in Bibb County,. The records are circa 1834. This individual isn't a direct family and I haven't researched them aside from collecting bits and pieces of information. I don't have any direct evidence linking them to any specific family although there was speculation that Claiborn may have been the father of the other Claiborn Harris who also lived in the area and who ended up in Pontotoc County, MS. Estate of Claiborn Harris Widow: Mary L Children / heirs Ezekiel L Addison R. Loenidas H Emily E Thadeus M Samuel D. W. There may be other children; the index lists other names in conjuction with Claiborn Harris. There were probably also BLM land patents which I found for land located in Bibb County. I would appreciate any specific information linking these two families together. Kristina Harris

    1. Two William Harrises who died 1678
    2. Carol Barron and I have  been working on these two Wm Harrises of Henrico--there was a  recent posting on the Harris mailing list  relevant to the below will of William Harris, but the dates were reversed.  The below transcription we feel is correct.    What is evident is that there were 2 Wm Harrises who died in the year 1678.     1) Wm Harris who wrote his will 1 Feb 1678 and  probated 20 Apr 1678, sons:  Thomas, William, Edward..   2) Maj Wm Harris who on 20 Aug 1678 presided on the Henrico's Orphans Court and killed a few days later on 23/24 Aug 1678.     I offer the following documentation regarding the above 2 Williams.       1) From "Capt. Thomas Harris 1586-1658 Immigrant 1611 A Rough Manuscript" by W. Lee Harris (Dallas Library, no copyright) page 29: PERSONAL WILL OF MAJOR WILLIAM HARRIS Not knowing what the Lord hath ordained or at what time He may take me out of this life, I do settle my estate of lands, as follows:--- I give and bequeath TO MY SON THOMAS HARRIS ALL MY LAND BELOW THE WARE and keep the Ware run as his bounds till it shall come to ye spring at ye head, and then to follow ye Bottome on ye lower side of the clearing of John Rabon to the Hundred Road Path and then a straight course, or road, to the land of Colonel Peter Ashbrook, but, in no case, to cross Pocket's Path. TO MY YOUNGER SONS, WILLIAM AND EDWARD HARRIS, I give the rest of my dividend, William the plantation where I now live, and Edward to have ye land next to Ashbrook but William to extend outward one hundred yards beyond the clearing of John Rabon, on the path called Pocket's Path, and thence on a straight course to ye Red Water. MY YOUNGEST SONS (WILLIAM & EDWARD) TO LIVE WITH THEIR MOTHER TILL THE AGE OF SIXTEEN if she marry, but if not till the age of nineteen years. My will is that MY WIFE, ALICE, live on the plantation during her life, but to not hinder my son William at the head of ye Ware, if he come to himself. I desire my friends, Mr. Thomas Cocke and Mr. William Randolph, to see that this, my Will, is performed. In witness of every part hereof, I put my hand, on this the FIRST DAY OF FEBRUARY, 1678. (signed) William Harris Signed in Presence of: Richard Ligon Ann Hunt Ann Stewart Proved in Henrico Co., VA Court, the 20TH DAY OF APRIL 1678   ************** 2) Maj Wm Harris & Col Francis Eppes alive on 20 AUG 1678 serving on Henrico Orphans Court...   Henrico Orphans Court Book 1677-1739 by Pauline Pearce Warner, p 9...An Orphants Court Holden at Varina for the County of Henrico the 20th day of Augst ...in the yeare of our Lord God 1678...Present: Major Wm Harris, Coll. Francis Epes, Lt Col John Farrar, Mr. Thos. Cocke, Mr. Richd Cocke, Mr. Essex Bevill, Mr. Abell Gower--Justices of the peace. ************** 2) Maj Wm Harris & Col Francis Epps killed....   A letter of Colonel Herbert Jeffreys, the Governor of Virginia, to Sir Henry Coventry reported that: "On the 22nd and 23rd of August [1678] some Indians came downe uppon james River to the number of 150 or 200 in Henrico County … on the 24th some of the Militia officers of Henrico County gott upp a party of forty six horse and march’ d imediately upp to [ ] upper plantation of Coll: [Rowland] Place’s: The cheife officer Coll: [Francis] Epps and Major [William] Harris were kill’d and two more wounded   So since we have the one will written and proved by April of 1678 and the other William Harris alive and well with Frances Eppes in August of 1678, before their excursion against the Indians,  these are two different men.
