    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re harris family, etc, edgefield co, sc
    2. belva cauthen
    3. pat, you and mitch posted on here quite some time ago that we had a new harris group 8 dna match re this stephen harris, who married mary gillison (?) in 1787 in edgefield co, sc.     i have never received from harris family tree dna that my brother david harris is a match with this stephen harris per our harris dna group 8.   is there proof that the ancestor of this william harris, who you have said was this stephen harris/ mary gillison (?), did marry some mary in edgefield co, sc?   you posted that this william harris, who was their ancestor, was the son of harrison harris/ elizabeth betts, son of stephen harris/ mary/ polly gillison of granville co, nc, son of claiborne harris/ judith.   you included the info that my arch harris/ elizabeth carter was part of this gwinnett co, ga harris line you posted.   first of all, ira says that this claiborne harris/ judith of granville co, nc was his ancestor and ira matches with those in harris dna group 6.     again, i also told you that there were two archibald harrises in gwinnett co, ga in 1830.    the archibald harris/ mary thompson, page 348, there in 1830 in gwinnett co, ga, and per the info by maud calloway hayes, is said to have been a son of benjamin harris/ karen gillson, son of claiborne harris/ judith of granville co, nc.     according to what ira posted earlier, both stephen harris' wife  mary gillison and benjamin harris' wife karen gillison were the daughters of this archibald gillison, who died in abbeville co, sc.   From: "Ira L. Harris III" < [email protected]> Subject: [HARRIS-SC] Will of Archibald Gillison, Pendleton Dist., S.C., 1792 Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2003 09:33:38 -0500 (CDT) Source: Pendleton District, South Carolina Deeds, 1790-1806 Compiled by Betty Willie Conveyance Book B, pages 63-64 I, Archibald Gillison, of Abbeville Co., S. C. being low and weak in body, but of sound mind, make this my last will and testament... to beloved wife, Jean Gillison, my whole estate, both real and personal, during her widowhood.... in case of her remarriage or decease, my four childrn, Elizabeth Price, Mary Harris, James Gillison, and Karenhappoch Harris to receive 20 shillings to be raised from sale of something that can be spared from the plantation... to daughter, Ann Gillison, at wife's decease or remariage, tract of land I now live on, of 125 acres, all househould furniture, cattle, etc... John Gillison, son of my daughter, Ann Gillison, remainder of estate, sufficient for his schooling... I appoint three friends, James Nash, Stephen Harris, and Larkin Nash, executors. Date: 3 January 1792 Wit: George Nash, James Thornhill, Valentine Nash. Rec:September 2(?),1792. >From what I have been able to figure out, Mary (Gillison)Harris was the wife of Stephen Harris. Karenhappoch (Gillison) Harris was the wife of Benjamin Harris. Benjamin and Stephen were the sons of Claiborne "Ned" Harris and his wife, Judith ___________. This is part of the line that descends through Robert Harris of Ware Creek, and York County, Virginia. Robert's son, Thomas, was the father of Claiborne "Ned". Any insight or additional information concerning these Harris' or Gillison's is appreciated. Please respond through HH or H-SC so that others may be helped. Ira L. Harris III Evansville, Indiana again, my archibald harris/ elizabeth carter was page 342 in 1830 in gwinnett co, ga.    my arch harris elizabeth carter, son of my charles harris/ jane cannon, was living near  his father-in-law,my robert carter, jr in 1830 in gwinnett co, ga.   my robert carter carter, jr, son of my robert carter, sr of laurens co, sc, stated, per a oath given for a polling registration in 1867 in paulding co, ga, that he was born in 1780 in laurens co, sc.   again, my arch harris/ elizabeth carter; my robert carter, jr/ 2nd wife, sarah mc daniel; my charles harris/ jane cannon were all on the 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga.   as i recently also posted, this redden/ redding blocker, who was enumerated adjacent my arch/ harris/ elizabeth carter, on this 1834 state census for cobb co, ga,  was the son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin of edgefield co, sc.   rosannah griffin blocker's father william griffin family is indicated to have traced back to this richard griffin/ mary green of halifax co, va and who was related to this anthony griffin, who was not only a legatee of peter hudson, sr, but also on this 1750 dodson survey for this land on wynn creek for william harris, sr, and william harris, jr, which became a patent in 1758 to my william harris, sr/ frances goode.   to return to edgefield co, sc, again, per the info i recently posted, michael blocker and daniel mc kie, jr were also purchasers at ellis palmer's 1800 edgefield co, sc estate sale.   ellis palmer was the brother-in-law of my simcock cannon/ jane rudd, grandparents of my jane cannon harris.    again, per laurens co, sc deeds i have posted, my charles harris/ jane cannon owned land on raborn creek in laurens co, sc adjacent lydall allen, which had involved a suit with thomas burton, who was the son of james burton, sr of lunenburg co, va and who was also a legatee of peter hudson, sr   this same land in laurens co, sc that had belonged to my charles harris/ jane cannon later belonged to lydall allen and, again, this same land re lydall allen involved a suit with daniel mc kie, sr, who was the father or definitely related to this daniel mc kie, jr in edgefield co, sc, who was also a purchaser of ellis palmer's estate sale.   daniel mc kie, sr was the son of michael mc kie, who had moved from lunenburg co, va to newberry co, sc.   again, is their proof or any info that this stephen harris re the new harris dna group 8 match did marry a mary in edgefield co, sc?   if so, it would seem to me that we need to be also looking in edgefield co, sc for this stephen harris/ mary's harris family.     belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910         Stephen Harris m potentially Mary Gillison 1787 in > Edgefield  SC is said to > have had another son besides Harrison J. 1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [VAALBEMA] [changed subj - W. H. Miller Histor& Genealogies..
    2. Thank you for reminding us that the thick book--but flawed genealgieis--done by William Harris Miller of Madison Co., KY long ago--is on the internet. You say it is on Ancestry.com, about which some subscribers complain about the search engine and its clunkiness!! I thought the book was on HeritageQuest, but I had trouble remembering the LONG title of the book I have copied the HQ catalog item, and I found it by choosing from your posting the family with the most unusual name--Maupin. Up came the catalog entry. I will paste it at bottom because the formatting in the catalog is frequently lost in rootsweb. Caution: Do check out every statement which Miller gives. Too bad he did not go to the courthouse in Richmond, Kentucky and check some of the facts. The facts about the Oldham family, of which I am a descendant, is particularly flawed. Lately, I had some correspondence with a person who pointed out some flawed information about one of the marriages of a Harris male. She had good circumstantial evidence to refute the conclusion Miller had made. Nowadays, if we cannot do the research in the films or books of Madison Co., many of us could employ a genealogist who lives near the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to check the filmed records of the counties in which these folks lived--in particular, Madison co., KY. Virginia counties are a little harder to research if some of the records have been destroyed. I generally check the Family History Library catalog and do a PLACE search in the catalog to determine 1) when a county was formed and 2)whether any records have been destroyed. For Virginia, not many marriage records preceding the American Revolution still exist. These, in order to be legitimate marriages, had to take place under the auspices of the Anglican Church--which was THE OFFICIAL church of Virginia. Hope this translates from the HeritageQuest catalog entry: Miller, William Harris, History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh, and Brown (illustrated) with interspersions of notes of the families of Dabney, Reid, Martin, Broaddus, Gentry, Jarman, Jameson, Ballard, Mullins, Michie, Moberley, Covington, Browning, Duncan, Yancey and others. Richmond KY: Miller, 1907, 859 pgs. HeritageQuest can be found at some public libraries, and some correspondents some State Libraries, such as Texas and North Carolina, also have HeritageQuest. Do some telephoning around. You may have to pay a fee to a nearby public library to obtain a valid library card, but it will be worth it to do some research in your pajamas!!! 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Atkins of Hanover, Orange & P.E. Co. VA, Re: re harris/ saxons/ lewis atkins
    2. Carol E Barron
    3. same-----was and/ or how was this lewis atkins in edgecombe co, nc related to the lewis atkins of hanover co, va? Belva, most likely those in NC were from the 4 Atkins' brothers who migrated from Prince Edward Co. VA to NC ca 1777 & they were affiliated back in P.E. Co. VA with Davison's, Mumford DeJarnette, Baldwin's & an early marriage to an Estes. Micajah Harris of P.E. Co. had a son, Thompson Harrris m Franky Davison 1780 in Charlotte Co. VA, they then went to Anson Co. NC abt 1781/82, then to Montgomery Co. NC. I was sent a large Atkins worksheet/timeline & they (Atkins) start out in King & Queen Co. VA then to Amelia Co. which later fell into Prince Edward Co....then they left ca 1777 for NC. As yet, I don't believe the P.E. Co. group has been linked to the Lewis Atkins of Hanover Co. or to the Atkins of Orange Co. VA but one would think there's some kind of connection between these groups due to location/timing & name affiliations. I would say there's more likely a link with Lewis Atkins of Hanover Co. with my Orange Co. Harris line...John Atkins & Susannah Brockman had eldest child Franky/Frances Atkins b 1754/55 & I believe she married my Lindsay Harris of Orange Co. VA...certainly many of Lindsay & Frances children bear some Atkins names of Hezekiah, Brockman, Susannah. In 1737 Partridge Accounts, Hanover Co., Lewis Atkins purchased 2 boys hats, a clue to possible sons but who these sons were is unknown, at least to me. Partridge - p. 85 Mr. Lewis Atkins. Jul. 20, 1736 (2 Psalters @ 1/6, 2 qr paper @ 1/6, 1 testament 0.2.6.); Oct. 9 (pd Mary Harris); Nov. 6, 15; Dec. 23; May 13; Jun. 15 (2 boys hatts, 1 youths Do., 1 Reap Sickle, 6 doz. pipes); Jul. 28. Credits: May 14, 1737 (1 Hhd. Tobo., carried to D p. 3). There were some marriages in Orange Co. VA of the daughters of Lindsay Harris (after his death in 1802) that had Atkins names as guardian, bondsman, etc., i.e., Joseph Atkins & Hezekiah Atkins plus I found the below marriage record which has Lewis Harris in 1808 as surety for Patsy Atkins. So, it would not surprise me to find that my Harris line, while in Hanover Co. in 1734, had close ties to the Lewis Atkins family there. Orange Co. 2. I took a gander at the link provided for the Virginia DOT report on Albermarle County and the indexes start on page 242 with HARRIS entries on page 261. What I found exciting was that after the name index, the report has indexes for mills, rivers, roads, mountains, etc. Thanks again [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) for posting wonderful resources! 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Which Husband Does Mary Hudson Belong to and Who is the Parents of Elizabeth Harris ?
    2. marianne dillow
    3. The reason I am posting this again is also to find out the parents of Elizabeth Harris who married John Hudson whose will is in 1734 in Hanover Co., VA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many Ragland researchers claim Stephen Ragland (my 7th great grandfather), son of Evan Ragland, Sr. and Susanna Pettus from New Kent Co., Va married Mary Hudson who is the daughter of John Hudson and Elizabeth Harris. Some say Elizabeth Harris is the daughter of William Harris and Temperance Overton and others say William Harris and Mary Giles. On Rootsweb many claim Elizabeth Harris who was married to John Hudson who left his will in 1734 in Hanover Co,, Va with securities as Wm. Harris and Daniel Patrick . My query is : My Stephen Ragland line has for years claimed Mary Hudson married him and he is the son of Evan Ragland, Sr and Susanna Pettus. He was born 1688 in St. Paul's Parish in New Kent Co., Va. In 1711 he is recorded as a freeholder with 200 acres of land described as upper part of Chikahominy River. John Ragland was a neighbor. He was in NC by 1730 in Bertie Precinct which became Northampton Co., NC. He was described as being from Hanover County, Va. Stephen Ragland died in 1747 in Northampton Co, Va and names wife Mary. On top of that another group says Mary Hudson married a Samuel Bunch of Hanover Co., Va and were Quakers and were disowned from the Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting Quakers in Hanover Co., Va. Samuel bunch left a will and it was proved 9 Jan 1783 in Hanover Co., Va. The Hudson group says Mary Hudson married a man by the last name of Thomas with no other information. So, as one can see this is a mess and needs some records to prove what is the truth to all of this. If anyone can shed some light on this it certainly would be appreciated. I am trying to determine if Mary Hudson is my 7th great grandmother or not. It seems to me if these three groups claim Mary Hudson there has to be some records somewhere that will prove it one way or the other. But Mary Hudson is definitely the daughter of John Hudson who died 1734 in Hanover Co., Va and his wife Elizabeth Harris. William Harris and Daniel Patrick was his securities. Best regards and thanks for any help anyone can give me. Marianne Dillow

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Road Orders & Petitions
    2. Barbara M. wrote in response my thanking her for her posting on the internet an early map of Granville Co., NC, which also had some residents named Harris--and a lot of other common names. Another very helpful source , if available, are the Petitions for Roads submitted by residents to the county governments.. When these were circulated around for signatures, most every male head of household in the general area seems to have signed-- even with an X. . They give a great list of the people living in one specific area. I have found this especially helpful in mid-western states where counties have been split up and then split again. I use these petition records (where available) along with land records and old maps. Good substitute where there are no watercourses of importance. Barbara Metzger Dear Barbara--and interested others - Thanks for jogging my memory. Lately the Dept. of Transportation in Virginia has published some road orders of various counties. In fact, some of their publications are on the internet, and, not long ago, there was a notice about a FREE CD from VA DOT of these published road orders. Unfortunately, for some of my Virginia folks--who went thataway--some of these Virginia road orders are too late -- dates.after my folks had started their migrations westward--mainly to Kentucky. _http://www.virginiadot.org/VTRC/main/online_reports/pdf/76-r27.pdf_ (http://www.virginiadot.org/VTRC/main/online_reports/pdf/76-r27.pdf) The first booklet is about Albemarle Co., but there are 335 pages altogether, and currently I do not have time to explore what comes after Albemarle Co. In court records of other States/Colonies, however, I do find road orders. And in some early Virginia vestry books, those that survive, the processioning records group neighbors together, which is quite helpful. Thanks, again, Barbara. **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers
    2. Some Harris surnames, from various Virginia counties, for various times, appear in the Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers. The three volumes are online at these websites: HeritageQuest [available at some public libraries and I am told at some State Libraries] Also, Ancestry.com also has the images. The search engine is pretty good, but I have not yet mastered how to see the whole page. The name Harris is overlined [yellow bit is on top of the surname Harris.] Because my eyesight is not so good, I think I will try the version on HeritageQuest, but with Ancestry.com you can *share*--that is, I send an e-mail to myself for further study. There is a chapter on the Dabney family for those of you have reason to believe that you have a Dabney ancestress--first wife of Christopher Harris of Louisa and Albemarle Cos., VA and later of Madison Co., KY. Happy hunting!! By the way, before you jump to any conclusions, be sure to note the DATE and the PLACE of each abstracted entry. Timelines are great for straightening out some ancestors' activities. If there is a gap of ten years, you have more research to do!! E.W.Wallace always hunting--and hoping for the best conclusion! **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. 3. Fran, The only wills for William's in Cumberland were in 1753 and 1755. That would be when he was a baby. There is no listing for Buckingham at all. Buckingham was formed in 1761 from Albemarle. There is one Wm there in 1788. Maybe someone on this site can give you some insite into this family. Eleanor Homewood This is the orignal message: Eleanor, so nice of you to take the time to do this. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Thanks for Map of Early Granville Co., NC and Tax Districts
    2. Dear Mary Harris, Thanks for posting the URL for the map of early Granville Co., NC and its tax districts. I long ago acquired a *hard copy* map of Granville Co. while staying in Oxford NC to do some research and to get a feel for the lay of the land. But it is handy to have one on the internet. While trying to sort out some families of the same common surname [not Harris, but worse!!!], I noted on which watercourse each family lived. I think this technique--discovering the watercourse--is largely overlooked by genealogists. I am constantly referring to whatever maps I have--sometimes the older the better!. Sometimes the online maps of the Geographic Names, etc. are not helpful. For example, Nut Bush Creek is now a part of Kerr Reservoir, I discovered!!! So old maps are most useful to genealogists. I had a hard lesson from a DAR staff genealogist: IShe said: 1) Determine who the associates of the family are, in other words, their neighbors and the bondsmen for various bonds and 2) determine the watercourse on which the family lived. These techniques are MOST important when one has a common surname in one's ancestry--and I seem to have more than my fair share!!! I think we modern folk, used to paved roads and interstate highways, overlook the fact that roads in colonial days were nearly non-existent in most colonies. If one reads the accounts of some adventurous persons, you learn the difficulty in crossing on horseback water streams, getting lost in the woods, having unfriendly natives, etc. The Virginia land patents refer occasionally to *paths*, no doubt made by animals and by native Americans. But these references are few and far between. Another example of disappearing geographic areas: One of my Kentucky ancestors paid taxes in the 1830s on Island No. 2 in the Mississippi River. Current day maps do not show such an island. However, the Kentucky Historical Society had a map which did show Island No. 2, and in fact, I believe I obtained a similar map from the Land Office in Kentucky. A correspondent told me that frequently these islands in the river attach themselves to the mainland, and then states along the Mississippi, for example, dispute who owns the land!!!! Thanks again. 3. i have been trying to find time to also respond to ira re the harris and wilkins families per the granville co, nc deed he posted re christopher harris to richard wilkins but i am, again, very busy here today and for the past several days.   granville co, nc is below and adjacent to lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va and although i have not focused on granville co, nc as i have lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va, i am aware that these were the same and related families also there and/ or connections re the granville co, nc families with the lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va families.   this is true i know of this wilkins family and, in fact, this same wilkins family was involved with both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson there in lunenburg co, va.   meanwhile, these connections are also more involved for me period but, so far, this still does not tell me if this harris family in granville co, nc were also related to my william harris, sr/ frances goode and/ or william harris/ judith hudson in lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va.   this john hawkins in this deed re christopher harris to richard wilkins is likely my ancestor john hawkins.    john hawkins/ mary wyatt were the parents of mary hawkins, who married my nathaniel bullock and who were the parents of my fanny bullock allen, wife of my george allen, who died in 1803 in oglethorpe co, va.    george allen/ fanny bullock were the great- grandparents of my great-grandmother  amanda allen harris, wife of my great-grandfather martin alonzo harris of paulding co, ga and who died in 1935 in atlanta, ga.   again, these connections are still more involved.  my mary wyatt hawkins, wife of my john hawkins, was the daughter of henry wyatt/ mary wynne, who re-married thomas twitty and this was also the same twitty family, who also inter-married with this same wilkins family.     Granville Co, NC DEED BOOK O 5-(4). This may be the John Wilkins who patented land in King William Co. in 1722. Was in Spotsylvania Co. in 1720's where he registered his livestock. Was in Hanover Co. in 1734 when he bought 1000 acres in Brunswick Co. While in Brunswick Co. he and Mary sold 200 ac. In Lunenburg Co. he and Mary sold 400 ac. in 1746. That year, he was appointed security for guardianship of Hannah Clements, orphan of John Clements. In a 1751 deed, his wife was Hannah. Last record of John is in 1757. Children of John Wilkins and wife Mary: 1. Thomas Wilkins mar. Hannah (Clements?), he died by 1784 in Lunenburg or Mecklenburg. Had at least one son John who married Anne Unknown. Thomas received land from his father in 1749, where he was already living. Bought land from Francis Bressie that his son John and wife Anna, of Mecklenburg Co. sold in 1774. 2. William Wilkins, mar. Sarah Avoreth? (dau. of Thos. & Sarah) ca. 1750. Wm. received 100 ac. from his father in 1749. Wm. made his mark "W" in early deeds. He had at least one son James, married to a Newton by 1785 - wife's name was Lettice (1796). Wm. and Sarah may have possibly been the parents of Thomas who mar. Susannah Pace (Cleveland Co NC); and John who mar. Mildred Parrish (Halifax Co. VA). 3. James Wilkins, d. 1781, Mecklenburg Co., VA, mar. Arabella Smith, widow of Daniel Marrow. He received 100 ac. from his father in 1751. Children: Charles Wilkins (went to N.C. and mar. 1st Frances Jones, mar. 2nd to Elizabeth Puryear; Martha Wilkins; Sukey Vaughan Wilkins; Mary Wilkins; Milly Newton Wilkins. 4. Richard Wilkins mar. Rebecca Twitty. He died abt. 1796 in Granville Co. N.C. Received a horse from his father in 1751. Was in Mecklenburg Co. until 1780's when he moved to Granville Co. NC where he died. Possible children were: Rebecca, William, Allin, Sophia, Polly, Thomas (who was in the same dist. in N.C. w/Richard?) 5. Susannah Wilkins - no further info. 6. Mary Ann Wilkins married Bartholomew Stovall and moved to N.C. (Still not identified: Clement Wilkins of Mecklenburg Co. who may have later been in N.C.; Valentine Mullins to whom John deeded 250 acres; Lunenburg Court Order Books indicate there may have been a John, Jr.; Mary Wilkins in Mecklenburg Co. Clement Wilkins in Mecklenburg Co.
