As indicated in a previous post, Christopher Harris of Louisa Co. and Albemarle Co., VA and later of Madison Co., KY, mentions in his will, proved Marh 1794, the will of Cornelius Dabney. Which Cornelius Dabney? This abstracted will may clarify *which Cornelius*. Previously I posted an abstracted will of one Susanah Anderson of Hanover Co. who named in her will her executor her son Cornelius Dabney, her will being written Mar 1722/5 Perhaps this Cornelius is the executor of Mrs. Anderson's will. Christopher Harris in his will proved in Madsion Co., KY refers to the will of Cornelius Dabney and he names his, Harris's *first children*, among whom is Dabney Harris. Reportedly his first wife was Mary Dabney. [Is anyone able to confirm this marriage? Other than tradition?] These wills are abstracts. If you wish further details which MAY be lacking in the abstract, consult the source given by the author. "Cornelius Dabney Hano 26 Oct 1764/7 Feb 1765" "Wife Sarah Dabney. Sons William Dabney, John Dabney and Cornelius Dabney, decd. Son-in-law C. Harris. Daughters Mary Elizabeth Maupin, Fanny Maupin and Anna Thompson. Exors: John Dabney and Henry Terrell. [Compiler's source as indicated in preface.] [Sketch of the Dabneys of VA, 1888, p. 38 by William H. Dabney." The compiler, Hopkins, does not specify the location of this sketch. He indicates he found some materials in the Virginia Historical Society, not to be confused with the Library of Virginia. VHS is a member-supported organization and is distinct from the LVA. Generally, if the source was a quarterly or a book, he gave that source. If it was a manuscript [or a transcript] in the LVA, he gave an accession number. (As abstracted by William Lindsay Hopkins, SOME WILLS FROM THE BURNED COUNTIES [Richmond: Published by author, 1987], p. 50). Correction: The title of the entire work is as follows: Some wills from the burned counties of Virginia and other wills not listed in Virginia wills and administrations, 1632-1800 / by William Lindsay Hopkins. Publisher Richmond, Va. (P.O. Box 7254, Richmond 23221) : W.L. Hopkins, 1987. Paging 181 p. ; 23 cm. Sarah Jennings is reported in Daughters of American Colonists Lineage Book, Vol. 7 to have been second wife of Cornelius Dabney, Jr. They were allegedly married 1721. Note that he is called Cornelius Junior. A Cornelius Dabney, probably the same one, was a witness to will of John Garland, of St. Paul's Par., Hanover Co. whose 1731 will was proved 5 Apr 1734. Members of that family: wife Anne; son Peter, son Robert; sons John, James and Nathaniel Garland. Executors were Edward Nelson, Thomas Wingfield, James Garland. Witnesses: William Terrell, Cornelius Dabney, Peter Garland, Richard Find. (William Armstrong Crozier, "Hanover County Wills, VIRGINIA COUNTY RECORDS, pp. 18-19 ff.). For those interested in some Harris-Dabney connections, At least one Harris male (Christopher Harris of colonial Louisa and Albemarle Co., VA and later of Madison Co., KY) married a Dabney, whose first name is reputed to be Mary. (I have not found verification of that name but for the nonce I will accept it.) Christopher's will was proved 1794 in Madison Co., KY. At any rate, in his will probated in Madison Co., KY, Christopher Harris mentions his *first children*, one of whom was named Dabney Harris, apparently [but not proved] the eldest son. Christopher also makes reference to the will of Cornelius Dabney [probably of a different generation than the one mentioned below.] in reference to his *first children*. Some researchers are doing research on that migrating person Dabney Harris, whom we run across in Surry Co., NC records and other places. A power of attorney executed by Dabney Harris of Surry Co. gives P/A to his son Christopher Harris to act in his, Dabney's, place, in the execution of the will of C. Harris. The P/A is recorded in Madison Co., deed records. The following highly abstracted will of one Susanah Anderson of Hanover Co., VA, with source, is given below. Apparently the testator, Susanah Anderson was first married to a Dabney, as she has has a son named Cornelius Dabney. My research indicates Cornelius is one of several men of that name, but the date and place of the will of Mrs. Anderson will be of interest to those Harrises who have a link to the Dabney family. The compiler of these abstracted wills gives his sources. Acc. with a number following refers to an accession number at the Library of Virginia [formerly known as the Virginia State Archives]. I will post another abstracted will from the same source, Hopkins, at a later date. >From William Lindsay Hopkins, Some of the Wills from the Burned Counties [Richmond VA: Published by author, 1987], p. 49 Comment: My photocopy of the page did not copy the actual date this will was proved. this rootsweb site talks about the family of john harris/ rachel milly kittrell and it is also this site which says that, per a granville co, nc deed, richard harris gave land to this son john harris but does not cite the deed. it also says that john harris sold land to john waldrop. i also note that, per this info, william harris/ elizabeth glover did have several other children, including sons: john c. harris; wiley glover harris; and william harris. Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2006 06:51:36 -0400 In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> Do you know the death place and grave location of Rachel M Kittrell Harris? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto: [email protected]] Sent: Friday, July 14, 2006 10:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SCMCCORM] John Harris of Abbeville/McCormick, S.C. The John Harris / Rachel Milly Kittrell Family of Abbeville District, S. C. We can offer information that may help Kittrell and Harris researchers of John Harris and Rachel Milly Kittrell Harris's line. For genealogists exploring Abbeville District, S. C., during the years 1780 to 1835 there is confusion of identities because multiple residents are named John Harris, William Harris, Milly Harris, and Elizabeth Harris. Yet it is possible to identify and separate them, although the records are sparse and the repetition of names muddles an easy search. Rachel Milly Kittrell's husband John Harris served South Carolina in the Revolutionary War, having migrated to the Abbeville area before war erupted. His record ("Pvt., 1 Regt. S. C. Continental Line, Rev. War") is noted on his tombstone. He and Rachel Milly were among the small enclave who came to Old Ninety Six from Granville County, N. C., in the pre-war years. According to Granville County Deed Book I (Eye), p. 167, John Harris and his wife Rachel sold land to John Waldrop on December 24, 1770. Deed Book H states that Richard Harris had made a deed of gift to his son John Harris on November 23, 1766. Thus around 1770 the Harrises likely moved to what would become the Abbeville District of Old Ninety Six. They would reside in the old Hillsborough township at the fork of the Little River and Long Cane Creek. John Harris died in 1831 and is buried in the Harris-Wideman Cemetery, formerly designated in Abbeville, now in McCormick County. His will (Box 43, Pack 959, Abbeville Probate Court) mentions his wife Milly, his sons William, Robert, John, and Thomas S., and his daughters Elizabeth, Polly, Sarah, Caroline, Peggy, Milly, and Leuisa Catherine. At the time he died some of these children were under the age of 21. The will mentions also Robert and James McCaslan, termed "friends." Witnesses include Patrick Gibson and Joseph S. Wideman. John Harris's son William [Stoutly] Harris and James McCaslan are the executors. He leaves his widow a plantation of 100 acres plus "three other small pieces attached to said tract, amounting to ninety-one acres, making in all 191 acres," plus "one other tract of land containing 160 acres" in Abbeville "on Bold Branch whereupon Henry Wideman now resides on adjoining lands of Robert McCaslan, George McFarland and others." This John Harris's name, as well as that of the Reverend John Harris, is included in Deed Plats: Plat Book A. Ninety Six District, South Side of Saluda River. Commissioner of Locations, 1784-1785. This volume of original drawings from the surveys shows an annotated diagram of land assigned to Rachel Milly Kittrell's husband, described thus: "John Harris as a citizen 86 acres of land situate on a branch of Little River bounding NW on land laid out for David Black & Andrew Kerr, E end and land out for John Dickey. Surveyed by Thomas Findley D. S. on the 30th of May inst. as per platt thereof recorded this 29th of May 1785. Robert Anderson, C. L. B. O." John Harris seems to be the first to have title to this particular acreage, but the deed records of Granville signal that this evidently was not his earlliest Abbeville home. The war, begun in the late 1770s, would continue through the mid -1780s. Likely John and Rachel Milly, along perhaps with a young child or children, settled on other Abbeville land before 1780. The 1785 grant was made to "citizen" John Harris in wartime. The 86 acres are within the old Hillsborough settlement, established in 1762. Comprised in the 28,000 acres of Hillsborough are the Huguenot town of New Bordeaux and farmlands along Long Cane Creek, Bold Branch, Buffalo Creek, and Little River. Page 116 of Robert L. Meriwether's The Expansion of South Carolina, 1729-1765, Philadelphia: Porcupine Press, 1974, features a map of Old Ninety Six showing the locations of the townships of Hillsborough, Boonesborough, and Londonborough (or Belfast) settlements. South of Hillsborough (the largest of the three) and just north of the Edgefield District boundary is the Barksdale Ferry Road, stretching from Saluda to the Savannah River. In southern Abbeville it is the main east-west thoroughfare of the time. The region's post office is at Longmire's Store (established 1809 in the north of Edgefield District), the first postmaster being John Longmire. Among the many residents in Hillsborough enumerated as heads of households in the earliest census reports are John Harris, Will Stoutly Harris, Henry Wideman, Adam Wideman, Cornelius Collier, Edward Collier, Joshua Hill, Uel Hill, William Hill, Robert Foster, Drury Breazeal, Patrick Gibson, James McCaslan, Robert McCaslan, Charles Brit, Hickerson Barksdale, John McCullough, Pierre Roger, Peter B. Roger, Peter Delishaw, Lazarus Covin, Peter Belote, and Peter Moragne. In the 1800 census of Abbeville the names of John Harris, Edward Collier, Lazarus Covin, Peter Belote, William Stoutly Harris, Peter Moragne, and Joshua Hill appear on the same page. In 1820 Uel Hill, Peter Delishaw, Charles Brit, Joshua Hill, and Isaac Moragne are clustered together, as are John Harris, Adam Wideman, and Edward W. Collier. Listed together also are Peter B. Roger(s), Henry Wideman, John Wideman, Samuel Wideman, and Robert McCaslan. The Abbeville plat books likewise signal that some of these are near neighbors. The family of John Harris and Rachel Milly Kittrell lives among settlers who in the main are Huguenot and Scots-Irish immigrants, although the Harris family is of neither group. The dominant religious faith in the settlement is Presbyterianism. Perhaps the most notable of the Abbeville men named John Harris is a prominent Presbyterian minister. He is of no kinship to the husband of Rachel Milly Kittrell. He too has a son named John, a Revolutionary War soldier who served under General Pickens and who married the general's daughter. The Reverend John Harris established and pastored various Abbeville churches, including Hopewell, founded in 1750 as Lower Long Cane Church, but his ministry was based mainly in the northwest of the county around Rocky River. He was educated at Princeton and was married to Mary Dashiell Handy. Their children, in addition to the soldier John, are Handy Harris, a Revolutionary War soldier who became a physician; Elizabeth Harris, who married Joseph Irving; Ann Handy Harris, who married Elijah McCurdy and settled in Lincoln County, Tenn.; and Thomas Harris, who settled in DeKalb, Ga. The Reverend John Harris's will was proven on April 5, 1791. Several plats assigned to him are represented in the Ninety Six plats book. Most are along the Savannah River. In Abbeville genealogy the recurring of the Harris names John, Milly, Elizabeth, and William offers a punishing problem. Here, with our identifications, is a list of the children of John Harris and Rachel Milly Kittrell, along with grandchildren and some great-grandchildren, many of them sharing the family given names: William Stoutly Harris m. (1) Mary S. Paul, m. (2) Sarah J. Baker Elizabeth Harris m. (1) Cornelius Collier, Jr., who d. 1790 (Box 20, Pack 442; he left 14 slaves), m. (2) Solomon Alston Hunter, d. 1799 (Box 47, Pack 1063). Elizabeth and her brother "Will Stoutly Harris" served as Hunter's co-administrators. Elizabeth is listed in the 1790 Abbeville census as "Elizabeth Colyer," owner of the 14 slaves mentioned in Collier's estate settlement. Her second husband, whom she married ca. 1792, was the brother-in-law of her uncle, Isham Kittrell (b. 1762, N. C.), who was married to Ann Alston Hunter of Granville Co./Warren Co., N. C. here is an equity case involving wiley glover/ jemina/ jemimah satterwhites' estate, showing, as i say, that descendants of barthlett satterwhite/ rebecca davenport, whose daughter jemina/ jemimah married wiley glover, again, like my harris family, also had moved to benton/ calhoun co, al. again, my archibald harris/ elizabeth carter moved to benton/ cleburne co, al in 1852 and died there in 1869. our charles harris/ jane cannon's son, richard harris, whose 1st and 2nd wives are indicated to have been daughters of martin and mary peek ingram, was in benton co, al as early as 1840. i also noted that the only child named as a legatee of wiley glover/ jemina satterwhite and their daughter elizabeth glover who married william harris was a daughter jemina harris. perhaps william harris/ elizabeth glover did have other children but they are not named in these equity papers. what is also interesting here is that, as shown, willis s. glover, younger brother of elizabeth glover harris, married susan white and she and lewellin goode were the administrators of willis s. glover's estate in 1823 in abbeville dist, sc. i know from our mackerness goode, jr's 1793 edgefield co, sc will that he had a son lewellin goode but do not know if he was the same lewellin goode also involved with the estate of willis s. glover in abbeville dist, sc or not. His wife Jemina and his children Elizabeth Glover and William Satterwhite Glover, your orator's father were his only legatees. > > By the third provision of his will Wiley Glover left Jemina 1/2 of his land and plantation and building where he lived and five negroes- one woman Murphy, one woman Tener, two boys Natt and Jack, one girl Mariah and livestock and households good (listed in detail.) This property appears on inventory and was in possession of Jemina Glover until her intermarriage with Nathan Lipscomb in March 1808. > > On May 7, 1815 William Harris who had intermarried with Elizabeth Glover in 1814 filed a bill against Nathan Lipscomb to require from the exectors of the estate an account of the sale and for the division of certain slaves between Elizabeth Glover and Willis S. Glover. Complainants believed that this was done as per the seventh item in the will. The third item of Wiley Glover's will was not effected. > > William Harris died intestate 1 Jan. 1840. Property bequeathed by Wiley to his wife remained in possession of Nathan Lipscomb and his wife until his death between 26 April 1820 and 29 Sept. 1820. > > The third item of his will decreed that his wife would have all slaves she had in her possession at the time of their intermarriage- Tener, Natt, Jack, Harry, Johnson, Caroline, Sarah, Isaac, and their future increases. Tener is mother of all said slaves. These are the same slaves as mentioned in the will of B. Satterwhite and Wiley Glover and in the inventory of Wiley Glover's estate. > > The assumption of power to dispose of Tener and her increase by the will of Nathan Lipscomb is a nullity. Complainants say that this is a direction made to restore possession of Tener and her increase to his wife (Nathan's wife.) > > No mention is made in the will of Nathan Lipscomb and Jemina, his wife of the slave Murphy and girl Mariah, a child of Tener. Complainants want to discover what happened to these slaves and to return them to the inventory of Wiley Glover's estate and to discover if they are living or dead and in whose possession they are, if they were sold and to whom and the price. > > >From the death of Nathan Lipscomb in 1820 until the death of Jemina Lipscomb between 17 April 1849 and 16 Feb. 1850, the slave Tener and her increase remained in the possession of Jemina, who lived for a time with Elizabeth Harris. Tener, at the death of Nathan Lipscomb, had sons Natt, Jack, Harry, Johnson and Isaac and daughters Caroline and Sarah. Caroline had increase and was the mother of Lewis, Liva, Bill, Johnson, Josephine and Elizabeth. Sarah had increase and was mother of Elvira, Jude, Peter and Lina. They say Jemina Lipscomb illegally took upon herself to dispose of this property. She gave Tener, Natt, and Jack to her daughter Elizabeth Harris. To her granddaughter Jemina Harris she bequeath during her natural life and remainder to her children the slaves Harry, Isaac, Johnson and Sarah the child of Tener and her children Elvira, Jude, Peter, and Lina. To her grandaughter Rebecca Addison, wife of George A. Addison, she gave Caroline, child of Tener with her childr! > en Lewis, Liva, Bill or William, Johnson, Josephine and Elizabeth. Complainants say that the power to dispose of these was beyond the power of Jemina Lipscomb. > > Complainants say that Tener, her children and grandchildren and also Murphy and Mariah and her increase are subject to division between the complainants who are widow and personal representative, and the son of Willis S. Glover, dec'd and Elizabeth Harris. > > Willis S. Glover, who was younger than Mrs. Elizabeth Harris, intermarried with Susan White, the mother of your orator about 1821 or 1822. He left surviving: his widow, Susan Glover, one of complainants and one child, your orator, as his only heirs and distributees. He died intestate Feb. or March 1823. His probate was in Abbeville Co. (SC) with Susan Glover and Lewellin Goode, Administrators. L. Goode is now dead and Susan remaines a widow of Willis S. Glover. > > Tener and her issue are now in possession of Mrs. Elizabeth Harris, George A. Addison of Edgefield District (SC) and E.S. Irvine of Greenville Dist. (SC). E.S. Irvine has intermarried with Ann Jemina Harris. There are other slaves and their children and grandchildren listed as an increase of Jude, Rachel, and Milley. > > The remaining pages in the package are long and involved distributions of the slaves and several more bills of equity between the parties regarding the slaves dated 1851. Also included in the package is a printed copy of the will of Wiley Glover. > > These papers involve the following family: > > Descendants of Bartlett Satterwhite, Jr. > > > 1 Bartlett Satterwhite, Jr. d: January 21, 1807 in Newberry Co. He is listed as a processioner of St. Paul's parish 1708/1743. In about 1753, Indian troubles caused him to dispose of his land there prior to the move to North Carolina, where he settled on Nutbush Creek. Records show he applied for bounty land for his services for the year 1758 in Col. Byrd's Regiment, during the French and Indian Wars. This land was granted on Ellibies Creek in then Orange Co., NC., which his will directed to be sold to pay debts of his estate. Richard Bullock died in Granville Co., NC, in 1764. His will was dated Oct. 27, 1764, and proved the next month, mentions children Sarah Sims, Agnes Williams, Zacharia, William, John, Susanna Sims, Agatha Nichols, Nathaniel, and Leonard Hendley Bullock. Daughter Anna married to Henry Vandyck was deceased. Nathaniel was willed the land and plantation whereon Richard lived after his mother's death, as well as half the remaining estate, Leonard receiving the other half, after bequests to the other children. Witnesses to his will included Philemon Hawkins, whose daughter Fannie married his son Leonard Henley Bullock. again, besides my harris and goode family connections with the satterwhites; joseph davenport, etc, i also decend from this same, related bullock family also involved with wiley glover in edgefield co, sc. according to this info, james bullock, who was one of the executors of wiley glover's 1806 edgefield co, sc will, married elizabeth satterwhite, sister of jemimah satterwhite who married wiley glover and who were the daughters of bartlett satterwhite/ rebecca davenport. again, this was wiley glover/ jemimah satterwhite's daughter, elizabeth glover who married william harris, who pat now says was the grandson of this john harris, sr/ rachel milly kittrell, supposed son of richard harris/ priscilla holmes, who may or may not have been the same richard harris/ margaret kimbrough of granville co, nc. again, bartlett satterwhite was the brother-in-law of samuel goode, oldest son of my mackerness goode, sr, father also of my frances goode harris, wife of my william harris, sr of lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va, who, like my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; my mackerness goode, sr and our mackerness goode, jr obtained these ca 1770 grants in laurens co, sc. as this info shows, james bullock, who married elizabeth satterwhite, also daughter of bartlett satterwhite/ rebecca davenport, was the son of john bullock, son of richard bullock/ ann henley. i also descend from richard bullock/ ann henley and his son nathaniel bullock/ mary hawkins, brother of this john bullock, whose son jame bullock married elizabeth satterwhite through my great-grandmother amanda allen harris, wife of my great-grandfather martin alonzo harris. my amanda allen harris was the daughter of my stephen n. allen/ lucinda colbert of paulding co, ga/ son of my henry allen/ elizabeth colbert of oglethorpe/ madison cos, ga, son of my george allen/ fanny bullock, daughter of my nathaniel bullock/ mary hawkins of granville/ warren cos, nc and oglethorpe co, ga, son of richard bullock/ ann henley. like these connections re my harrris and goode family with the satterwhites and this joseph davenport, etc, it would also seem that my bullock family's connections with this wiley glover, etc, would also be important and relevant as well. again, i do not know more, however, about this william harris, who married elizabeth glover, granddaughter of bartlett satterwhite/ rebecca davenport other than what pat has posted and/ or what i have been able to find on line. here to follow is the edgefield co, sc will for wiley glover, which names jemimah satterwhite glover as his wife; elizabeth glover, his daughter and james bullock as one of the executors of his will. again, although i will not include all of the info, i descend also from this same bullock family i.e. nathaniel bullock/ mary hawkins, brother of this john bullock, father of this james bullock, who was the executor of wiley glover's edgefield co, sc will. pat this is very interesting. i remember in our corresponding early on that you mentioned someone had tested, who had thought they were a match with our harris dna group 8 but, then, did not match, but i do not remember your saying exactly what the info was on that person and/ or going into any of the details. so, again, this is interesting to learn that this was someone who had, like my own harris and goode families, some connections also to this same satterwhite; davenport; mitchell, etc families with connections, again, to this same lunenburg co, va area. as we know, info on these family tree rootsweb sites is not always accurate and i find that the info re this john harris/ rachel milly kittrell have that he was born from a range of dates from ca 1720 to ca 1755. also, most of these if they give a father for this john harris, they have it was richard harris/ margaret kimbrough and not richard harris/ priscilla holmes. per the info, there is said to have been a granville co, nc deed wherein richard harris/ priscilla holmes gave land to their son, john harris. does anyone have a copy of this granville co, nc deed? in order for this richard harris/ margaret kimbrough, who may have been the same richard harris, who married priscilla holmes; this sherwood harris/ jane hudspeth; robert harris/ lemender smith to have been the sons of this richard harris/ sarah b ca 1694, said by wiggins to have been one of the 8 sons of our william harris/ mary giles, they would have to have been born no earlier than ca 1714, etc. so, someone born as early as 1720 would have been more the age of richard harris/ priscilla holmes or richard harris/ margaret kimbrough, etc, and not the age to have been a son of richard harris/ priscilla holmes. however, these connections that this was the same bartlett satterwhite, who was the brother-in-law of my/ our samuel goode, whose granddaughter elizabeth glover married this william harris are definitely interesting. in fact, besides my harris and goode connections also re the satterwhites and joseph davenport, etc, i also have connections also re this same wiley glover re my same, related bullock family as well. also, per info i have noted, some of these same families also moved to benton/ calhoun/ cleburne co, al, which is also interesting as my arch harris/ elizabeth carter sold his land in 1852 in paulding co, ga and moved to benton/ cleburne co, al where he died there in 1869. i agree with you we need to find other harris descendants of richard harris/ margaret kimbrough and/ or richard harris/ priscilla holmes as well as this robert harris, wife, lemender, etc, to also participate in the harris dna project. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
Joseph Davenport d 1788 m Jemima Mitchell and had daughter Rebecca Davenport. Rebecca Davenport marries Bartlett Satterwhite and they have Jemima Satterwhite; Jemima Satterwhite marries Wiley Glover, and they have Elizabeth Glover; Elizabeth Glover marries William Harris. Richard Harris/Priscilla line is said to be Group 6. Several years ago one of our first entries into Harris DNA was for this Richard line, but it was and remains unmatched. Currently the DNA for a descendant of Lemander and Robert Harris is also unmatched. We should recruit another descendant of the Richard Harris line to see where the DNA falls. Do we have any Harrises from this line currently on HH or other Harris lists? **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. again, the info shows that the harris family of granville co, nc were also involved with individuals in lunenburg co, va, who also had connections with my harris and goode family in lunenburg co, va and these connections continued also on into laurens/ newberry cos, sc. per the will of robert harris/ lemander of granville co, nc, his executor was his friend, col joseph taylor. the granville co, nc will of robert harris/ lemender indicates that he does have kinship with richard harris/ margaret kimbrough. Joseph Taylor. Wts: R. D. Cooke, Temperance Wilbourn, John Ogelvie. per this rootsweb site, col joseph taylor was the son of this john taylor/ catherine pendleton and this was his brother edmund taylor. per the info, this was col joseph taylors' brother, edmund taylor, who died ca 1808 granville co, nc but who had previously also lived also in lunenburg co, va. per the following deeds these were the same satterwhite and mitchell families, who had also been in lunenburg co, va, but who were now in granville co, nc who sold land to edmund taylor. these connections re the satterwhites and my harris and goode family are quite involved. joseph davenport, who witnessed these deeds moved from granville co, nc to newberry co, sc and he was the father-in law of our samuel goode, son of my mackerness goode, sr and also of this bartlett satterwhite, who was part of this same satterwhite family. i also want it to be noted that this earl bevan, who posted this info that col joseph taylor of granville co, nc, son of john taylor/ catherine pendleton and brother of edmund taylor, is also interested in the same blocker family re redding blocker, who was enumerated adjacent my archibald harris/ elizabeth carter per the 1834 ga state census of cobb co, ga. again, redding blocker was the son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin of edgefield co, sc whose father william griffin is indicated/ shown to have been related to this anthony griffin, who was not only a legate of peter hudson, sr, but was also a neighbor on this 1750 dodson survey for this land in halifax co, va for william harris, sr and william harris, jr and which became a patent to my william harris, sr/frances goode in 1758 and who in this case was the william harris, jr on this 1750 dodson survey. again, both michel blocker and daniel mckie, jr were also purchasers at ellis palmer's 1800 edgefield co, sc estate sale and ellis palmer was the brother-in-law of my simcock cannon, grandfather of my jane cannon harris, wife of my charles harris. again, my charles harris had owned land in laurens co, sc which became the property of lydall allen, which had involved a suit with daniel mckie, sr. again, daniel mckie, sr was the son of michael mckie, who died in newberry co, sc but who was also from lunenburg co, va and, again, this same satterwhite family also of lunenburg co, va and granville co, nc had also married with this same mckie family. ira, i have noted that in the past that you had also posted that this richard harris/ margaret kimbrough; sherwood harris/ jane hudspeth; robert harris/ lemender smith were the sons of this richard harris, wife, sarah, who, again, was stated by wiggins to have been one of the 8 sons of our william harris/ mary giles of hanover/ louisa co, va and who had this patent in 1725 for this land on cubb creek. then, more recently, you have posted that this richard harris/ margaret kimbrough was the son of this robert harris/ elizabeth turner of hanover co, va. do you now have proof that richard harris/ margaret kimbrough was the son of this robert harris/ elizabeth turner? again, and i will say more about this, but like these connections with the wilkins family in granville co, nc, there are also other connections re the harrises there in granville co, nc with my harris and goode family, etc, and other of these same individuals and families there in lunenburg co, va and even on into laurens/ newberry cos, sc. belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8---------26901
again, this is what these hanover/ louisa co, va deeds do show that this richard harris and sherwood harris would have also been part of our captain thomas harris', our william harris/ mary giles' harris line and family. here are other of the deeds also for richard harris, etc, but what i want to mainly focus on here is the info which carol posted recently which shows that marmaduke kimbrough's land was also adjacent our david harris/ jane landy richardson. these granville/ edgecombe co, nc deeds show that richard harris/ margaret kimbrough was the brother-in-law of mamaduke kimbrough. so, whether you are looking at these hanover/ louisa cos, va cubb creek deeds or these granville/ edgecombe co, nc deeds, they show connections re both richard harris and marmaduke kimbrough with our david harris/ jane landy richardson and our harris family there on cubb creek in louisa co, va. i cannot say, which is what wiggins also said, that he was the same richard harris/ margaret kimbrough, who also re-married priscilla holmes or not? Marmaduke Kimbrough had Cubb Cr. land adj. David Harris in 1733 land patent of John Blalock. again, all of this harris family on cubb creek and/ or associated with this cubb creek land in hanover/ louisa co, va is indicated to me and, per the records, etc, to have been the harris family of our captain thomas harris' harris family and either the sons/ grandsons of our william harris/ mary giles or his brother edward harris. again, as most know, who are interested in the early colonial va/ nc harris families, kathryn wiggins studied the harrises there for a number of years and compiled her research in a number of volumes/ booklets which she called the "harris papers". i have several of her volumes/ booklets which i acquired from her quite a number of years ago. i have her: harris papers: new kent/ hanover co, va; harris papers: lunenburg co, va; and harris papers: granville co, nc. wiggins has in her harris papers: granville co, nc that: "sherwood harris, who died in 1763 and left his will in granville co, nc is thought by the best authorities, mr joe harris; dr malcolm harris, and others as well as the collector of these abtracts (herself) to be the sherwood harris who in the 1750's processioned the lines of the land in louisa co, va records that had belonged to his father richard harris, deceased, doubtless his father. also in her harris papers: granville co, nc, she has a geneagraph she compiled re our captain thomas harris' harris family in 1982 based on her years of research on the early harris families. i cannot say that kathryn wiggins got it all right, per this geneagraph, but, again, whether in regard to kathryn wiggins; malcom harris; or lee harris, etc, we need to figure out what it is they did get right and what they did not get right and what these records themselves do show. kathryn wiggins has, then, that this richard harris/ sarah b ca 1694-1745 was one of the 8 sons of our william harris/ mary giles, son of our major william harris/ and his 2nd wife, alice, son of our captain thomas harris 1611 jamestown. again, our alice, widow of our major william harris, re-married george alvis. then, she has that this richard harris/ sarah, who was the son of our william harris/ mary giles, was the father of richard harris/ margaret kimbrough, who re-married priscilla holmes and who died 1787 granville co, nc; this same sherwood harris/ jane, who died 1763 granville co, nc, and, robert harris / lemander, who died also there in granville co, nc in 1787. again, malcolm harris and joe harris agreed with her that this was the same sherwood harris. so, again, what info had they seen? we, again, know that malcolm harris and others also agreed that this was our william harris/ mary giles' harris family on cubb creek in hanover/ louisa co, va. i also agree with them that this was our william harris/ mary giles and our captain thomas harris' line and family who were on cubb creek in hanover/ louisa cos, va. again, it does not make sense to me that this would have been both our captain thomas harris' harris line and family and your captain william harris/ temperance overton's harris line and family also there on cubb creek and who were involved there with each other. in fact, again, our harris dna confirms that this was our captain thomas harris' harris line and family there in cubb creek in hanover/ louisa co, va. as shown, this was our david harris/ jane landy richardson, who was also cited in these cubb creek deeds and who is shown to have been a son of our william harris/ mary giles. again, descendants of david harris/ jane landy richardson are a match with our harris dna group 8, tracing back, per the records, to our captain thomas harris 1611 of jamestown. again, as shown, there was also a richard harris and a sherwood harris there on cubb creek which we have cited per these louisa co, va deeds many times. if, again, as these deeds and info show that this was our william harris/ mary giles harris' family on cubb creek, then, i am going to have to, again, agree with wiggins and others that this is also indicated to have been all our harris family there on cubb creek, which included, then, this richard harris and sherwood harris. these louisa co, va deeds re richard harris and sherwood harris also there on cubb creek have been posted many times but here are some of these deeds again. specifically, it shows that the land sherwood harris sold to nelson anderson was adjacent william harris and in david harris' line. it also shows that sherwood harris had purchased this land from richard henderson. this was the same richard henderson, who witnessed the brunswick co, va deed wherein william harris, who i believe was william harris/ judith hudson, sold this land in louisa co, va to stephen harris, who, again, is also shown to have been the same stephen harris who was also involved with david harris. Louisa Co, Va Deed Book A, p. 107-108, 3 Aug 1743 William Harris of Brunswick Co. to Stephen Harris of St. Martin ’s Par., Hanover Co. £12 currt. money. 62 acres and plantation in Fredericksville Par. William Harris Wit: Richard Henderson, James Woody, John (X) Adams 12 Sept 1743 proved by oaths of the witnesses. i have also talked about this richard henderson previously. the info shows that this richard henderson, wife, elizabeth, was the son of this william henderson. here is info on the will of william henderson and it connects him with this theophilus watson, sr, who is shown to have been the same theophilus watson, sr also involved with our william harris/ mary giles and george alvis, per the processioning records of new kent co, va. Only one fragment remains of William Henderson's will and the settlement of his estate. Richard Henderson was one of the executors; the other was Theophilus Watson Sr., the father of Thomas Watson who was born 1684, and was brother-in-law of Quaker Richard Henderson. Elderly Theophilus Watson was probably appointed executor to watch over Richard Henderson whose business sense was less than exact; the fragment shows that Richard Henderson could not provide vouchers for some of his expenditures of William Henderson's estate money; the court decided Richard Henderson's accounts were probably true, and his financial statement was admitted to record. Richard Henderson lived on Cub Creek near William Henderson and appears to have been William Henderson's only son in Louisa county. Son William Henderson lived in Goochland and son Thomas Henderson had died, leaving heirs. Names of William Henderson's three sons-in-law were listed: James Pyrant, Thomas Watson, and Lawrence Redman........ again, as shown, this theophilus watson, sr, who was an executor of william henderson's will was the same theophilus watson, who was also processioned with our william harris/ mary giles and our george alvis, per the processioning records of new kent co, va. this is also from the kathryn wiggins': harris papers/ new kent/ hanover cos, va re processing records for st paul's parish/ new kent co, va: Precinct # 15., 1711: "The Lands of George Alves, William Harris, Thomas Harden, Theophilus Watson, George Marr, & Jos. Hamilton, lying Adjacent to each Other, being made one precinct, of which the Sd. George Alves and William Harris are appointed Overseers, who made this return on the Back of the Order viz. The within Order Executed by all, only Thomas Casey instead of George Marr, and Adam Rutherford instead of Joseph Hamilton. Subscrib'd George Alves and William Harris." again, this is also shown to have been our william harris/ mary giles, associated with george alvis and theophilus watson, sr per this new kent co, va processioning record in 1711. here, again, is the louisa co, va deed showing that the land sherwood harris purchased of richard henderson adjoined william harris and was in david harris' line. The film number is 1421873, Item 13. However a note under the subtitle, submitted by the Genealogical Society of Utah, is that there are numerous discrepancies in this record. Question: Is anyone following this family, either in Albemarle Co. or in Madison Co., KY? Christopher Harris and his second wife Agnes McCord are my ancestors. They migrated to Madison Co., KY. Some McCord males are found in the early records of the Kentucky county. I am not sure that Agnes is of this family as I have located this abstracted deed. However, the name William McCord appears in both abstracts--the will above and the deed below. Albemarle Co. "DB 2, Page 294: 14 Aug 1760 Wm. Apparently the McCords lived in Augusta Co. prior to removing to Albemarle Co. as Agnes and Christopher Harris sold property there, according to the abstracts of Lyman Copeland's The Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlements in Virginia. Dear Harris-Analyzer, Thanks for all the information you have imparted about the Harrises who stayed in Louisa Co. and their earlier connections. A lot of us keep wondering whether they are all related? What are your ideas? You seem to have spent a good deal of time sorting out these folks, for which I personally thank you. Got to do some errands, but I appreciate your useful contribution. I have copied it into my genealogy program under Benjamin Harris, and will study it more. Have always wondered about Mezzapina!!! ira and others you have asked in the past if there were a william harris/ mary giles? i have posted in the past deeds showing that both our major william harris' sons, our william harris b ca 1672, wife, mary, and his brother edward harris b ca 1674, also, wife, mary, by our major william harris' 2nd wife alice, who remarried george alvis, were associated with george alvis and their mother, alice, ca 1794 in new kent co, va. again, i cannot say that our william harris' wife, mary, was a giles but i have continued to call her that just to identify who i am talking about as there are so many william harrises. it would not seem to me that our william harris' wife, mary, was mary willis as some have cited the will of this edward willis of hanover co, va as proof of this. it was an edward harris associated with the 1734 hanover co, va will of this edward willis------not a william harris. where does the info come that there was a thomas harris/ mary giles or that he was killed by the indians? is it thought that this was the thomas harris/ mary giles who, like william harris, also obtained this patent for land also in 1725 also on cubb creek? william harris of hanover patents 400 acres in hanover on upper side of cubb creek on lines of land of of captain dabney, march 24, 1725. thomas harris of hanover patents 400 acres on cubb creek beginning at william harris' line and going to dabney's line, march 24, 1725. in the past, there has been a consensus that this was our captain thomas harris' harris line and family on cubb creek i.e. our william harris/ mary giles, who obtained this patent for this land in 1725 on cubb creek. if so, and this does seem to be confirmed because david harris/ jane landy richardson, named in a louisa co, va deed as the son of the william harris, who had obtained this patent land in 1725 on cubb creek, is a match with our harris dna group 8/ captain thomas harris line and family, then, i am having difficulty thinking or seeing how any of this harris family on cubb creek would have been the harris family of your captain william harris/ temperance overton? again, per these hanover co, va patents, the patents for your captain william harris/ temperance overton and, again, i do not know that william harris, gent, and captain william harris were the same, and his son, william harris, jr, were not on cubb creek. this has, again, been said in the past to have been a patent for your captain william harris/ temperance overton: captain william harris of hanover co, va pays 30 shillings for 266 acres on the south side of the little river at the mouth of bryars branch running to his own land, march 24, 1725. again, this has also said to have been you captain william harris/ temperance overton's son, william harris, jr, who obtained this patent: william harris, junr, of hanover co, va patents 1500 acres in same bounded by land of mrs arnold, george woodroof, the corner being on overton fork of elk creek, march 24, 1725. also, james overton of hanover co, va patents 400 acres in same on the south fork of elk creek on john raglin's line, 1723. also, besides having difficulty in seeing that that this would have been your captain william harris/ temperance overton' harris family also on cubb creek, i am also having difficulty in seeing or thinking that our captain thomas harris' harris line and family would have sold this land on cubb creek to your captain william harris/ temperance overton harris' line and family? again, it would seem logical or make more sense that they would have sold this cubb creek land to their brothers or to the sons of their uncle edward harris than the harris family of your captain william harris/ temperance overton, who, per these patents did not live in this same cubb creek area. again, obviously, one of the problems we have is that most of the hanover/ new kent co, va records have been destroyed and what records we do have have been subject to someone's interpretation both in the past and present. it would seem to me that in light of our harris dna project, which, for now, we are also in the early stages of and where we are not sure that paper trails are always accurate, that we need to look at over and over what has been written in the past and continues to be said " as if " as to whether it has been interpreted accurately. on the other hand, i am also not suggesting that we disregard totally what someone has said in the past as being inaccurate either but rather that this, again, is something it seems to me that we need to continue to look at and to investigate. the issue, then, or now is, again, whether any and/ or what part of this info, per the records we do have re our harris families there in hanover co, va, has been interpreted accurately. so, again, where does the info come from that there was a thomas harris/ mary giles and, again, is it thought that he was this thomas harris, who also obtained this patent for land in 1725 on cubb creek, like our william harris/ mary giles? in fact, speaking of names, what sense does it make that your william harris/ temperance overton, who is now said to have been the son of this robert harris of the ware or forks of new kent co, va, would have named a son thomas harris? so, it does make more sense that this thomas harris, who also had land there on cubb creek, like our william harris/ mary giles,in 1725 would have been part of our captain thomas harris' harris line and family------possibly the son of our william harris/ mary giles or his brother, edward harris? A transcription of the Louisa Co., VA, Federal Census of 1800 is published in Louisa County Historical Magazine, Vol. 4, No. 1, June 1972, pp.21-49: "The Manuscript Return of the Census of 1800", by Ransom B. True. As far as I know, it has not been published anywhere else. The census was taken as of Monday, August 4, 1800. The manuscript was alphabetized by first letter of the surname. Here is an extract of the Harris entries: 1800 US Census, Louisa Co., Virginia Key: Name; Free White Males: <10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, >45; Free White Females: <10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, >45; Other free persons; Slaves. ...Robert Harris 12010 31110 0 10 ...Nelson Harriss 20010 40010 0 12 ...William Harris, HC 01011 00001 0 17 Moses Harris 21010 11010 0 3 ...Nathaniel Harris 40010 11010 0 2 ...Fanmy Harris 12100 10001 0 6 ...Samuel Harris 10010 20010 0 6 Overton Harris 21010 30010 0 6 ...Job Harris 01110 01010 0 1 Nathan Harris 11201 01311 0 6 ...Frederick Harris 00001 00000 0 7 ...Damon Harris 30011 00010 0 0 ...Benjamin Harris 20110 10100 0 3 ...Wingfield Harris, Over. for Mrs. Darracott 00100 20100 0 17 ...Patrick Harris 20001 02110 0 0 ...Henry Harris 21010 20010 0 4 Richard Harris 00010 00100 0 3 ...Ester Harris 00000 00001 0 2 Micajah Harris 00301 00100 0 3 ...Cyrus Harris 01010 12110 0 0 Here is the same list, with my best guess about identities and relationships in brackets [ ] : ...Robert Harris 12010 31110 0 10 [born 1763/4, son of Benjamin d.1765; brother of Overton and Benjamin and nephew of Frederick also on this list; m.1784 widow Mary Davis] ...Nelson Harriss 20010 40010 0 12 [born 1758, died 1837 Louisa Co., son of Overton and Ann (Nelson) Harris of Cedar Hill, Hanover Co.,VA; m.1789 Mary Pryor; He is said to be grandson or great-grandson of William and Temperance (Overton) Harris.] ...William Harris, HC 01011 00001 0 17 [HC=Hickory Creek] [born bef.1737, died 1813 Louisa Co., m1.bef.1758 Mary Hudson, m2.Elizabeth?] Moses Harris 21010 11010 0 3 [born bef.1767, m.abt.1785 Judith; probably son of William Harris HC] ...Nathaniel Harris 40010 11010 0 2 [born 1762, Rev War vet, died 1854; m.1788 Martha Byers; by 1810 has left Louisa Co. for Smyth Co., VA.; descendent DNA kit #66623 in Harris DNA Group 2] ...Fanmy Harris 12100 10001 0 6 [I think this may be widow Mezzapina (Walton) Harris, who was sometimes referred to as 'Peeny', which might be mistranscribed here.
