The Latin term for the county's name means 'Anne's River', in honor of Queen Anne of England. This was the term given by early cartographers to the upper reaches of the James River. By the end of the Revolution, the community of Point of Fork was an important state arsenal for western garrisons. Here also Baron von Steuben trained recruits for Greene's army in the South. At Bremo in Fluvanna County is the home of John Hartwell Cocke, built after plans made by Thomas Jefferson. 1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Overton Family History - Secondary Info

    3. Dear Ms. Wallace,   As I have mentioned before, "Overton" was also a frequent given name in my Harris family of Georgia (descendants of John Harris died 1826 and his wife Mary Fielder). It is the most common given name in that family. The second most common given name (considering most of the descendants were through daughters) was "Harris".   As many will know (including yourself), this fact does not automatically guarantee an Overton connection. Even so, I, too, would be interested to see the Overton data you have (to supplement my own).   Whether or not all or any of these various Harris families were genetically related to the Overtons of England, one thing at least is clear--they were all of them proud of the name, and wished to claim a relationship to them!   Thanks again for all your selfless, dedicated work on behalf of us all.   T.J. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Notes on William Overton, Probable Father of Temperance Overton Harris
    2. As indicated a few days ago, I said I would share some of my notes concerning William Overton, who is probably the father of Temperance Overton Harris, wife of William Harris, believed to be the father of Robert Harris, surveyor of Louisa Co., VA. I have not proved anything but have been *surveying the literature* as my deceased research professor told us was the first step in beginning a research project. I have tried to indicate the sources in each case, and I hope you will be able to check out these sources yourself, although a trip to Richmond, VA may be necessary to find the information which is in collections in the Historical Society of Virginia, not to be confused with the Library of Virginia. I have not worked on this particular biography for some years. Look for subsequent installments. Please note that Temperance's alleged sister was Barbara Overton Winston. Many records refer to the widow Barbara Winston, who seemingly did not remarry. If the Torrence book has been digitized and is online, please notify Harris-Hunters, so that all may benefit from research. E.W.Wallace Installment 1 Preparer: E. W. Wallace Rev 7/98 & 1999 WILLIAM OVERTON, the elder. A source for much of the Virginia information about the Overton family is said to have come from a book called "Josephus," held in the Winston family and said to have been given to John Winston in the will of his mother, Barbara Overton Winston. It is said to probably have been a copy of Flavius Josephus's "Jewish Antiquities," which contained on its blank leaves a family register of births and marriages in the Overton-Winston families for five generations. (Information from a letter in the George Harrison King collection entitled loosely "Overton-Carr," which collection is at the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, VA. Viewed by this writer May 1999 in Richmond, VA.) According to Cross and Cole, WILLIAM CROSS OF BOTETOURT CO., VA. AND HIS DESCENDANTS (Columbia, MO: 1932), William Overton of "Glencairn," Hanover Co., VA emigrated to Virginia ca. 1681. He was the son of Col. Robert Overton, and he was married to Elizabeth Waters, daughter of Samuel Waters (ca. 1617-1665) and his wife Anne (d. ca. 1700). Clayton Torrence had a different perspective as he wrote the following of William Overton in WINSTON FAMILY OF VIRGINIA (publ. 1927, repository: Virginia State Library CS71 W782): "... was born in England, December 3, 1628 [or 1638]. On November 24, 1670, he married Elizabeth Waters, and together they came to Virginia in 1681, settling in St. Peters Parish, New Kent County. On April 23, 1681, a patent was issued to William Overton and Eben Jones [Evan Jones] for 4600 acres lying in New Kent County on south side of Pamunkey River, on Falling Creek; for the transportation of 92 persons into the colony, and among the names of head-rights to this pattent appear: William Overton and Elizabeth Overton. On October 29, 1690, a patent issued to William Overton and John Lyddall for 837 acres lying in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, above main fork of Pamunkey River, next above a divident of land granted Jonathan Norwood and Ambrose Clre, late in the tenure of Samuel Ousteen." [Overton? Austin?] Torrence cites the land patents, which are readily available to researchers in the early volumes of Nugent's CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS, especially Vol. II. The land patents, originally in New Kent Co., later fell into a newly formed county, Hanover Co. These are in Patent Bk 7-78 (co-patentee Evan Jones, 1681 the year) and in Patent Bk 8-121 (co-patentee John Lydall in 1690). In a footnote, Torrence wrote: To this time [1927], the parentage of William Overton has not been discovered, nor the place of his birth. The Register of St. Sepulchre's [London] does not give the marriage of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters. There were Overtons living in St. Sepulchre's Parish, London; but a careful search of the Births, Marriages and Buriels [sic] from 1662 (when the registers begin) up to 1700 has thrown no light on the 'origin' or relationships of William Overton. Overton wills and administrations in the ARCHDEACONRY OF LONDON REGISTERS, 1413-1725, have also been investigated without favorable results. For note on this discrepancy in statements as to year (1628 or 1638) of William Overton's birth see ante page 29, footnote." 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Overton Family History - Secondary Info
    2. Dear Harris Hunters who are linked with the Overton family of colonial Virginia You may want to explore this website for some information. Take everything with a grain of salt and try to check it out--difficult to do if you are really busy. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/Overtongen.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/Overtongen.html) My reservation: I would question whether the Overtons of around the Pamunkey River are linked with the General Overton of England. Overton is NOT an uncommon name in England. It is also a place name. I have found the surname Overton also in Northern Neck Virginia--I think in the Northern Neck land grants. Whether they were related families, I have not discovered. I have some notes on Overton family of Virginia, which are NOT conclusive--not written in stone--which I hope to share with you from time to time. They are lengthy as I have struggled with the *tales* about this family, and I will have to send information in installments. Rootsweb does not allow attachments nor long e-mails. *Overton* is a given name in some of my immediate family, as it was a middle name for the son of Carlisle Harris Stoner's son [Carlisle was daughter of Overton Harris, who died 1827 in Madison Co., KY], and that name has been given to a lot of Carlisle's grandchildren and great-grandchildren and so on down the line!!! 1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [changes subject] Virginia Citizens Involved in Revolutionary War
    2. In a message dated 8/26/2008 11:04:53 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, Hdanw writes: There were many Rev War pension acts, and the ones which appear in most of the online databases, such as HeritageQuest and Footnote.com, etc. were probably the Act of 1832, after the death of a good many men who participated in the Revolution. I saw a chart one time of ALL the acts, but the 1832 was the most generous and that is when widows could make claims. I appreciate the opportunity to mention the continuing project of transcribing the pension applications of Revolutionary soldiers and widows who served from or in VA, NC, SC, and GA. The transcriptions can be found at _www.southerncampaign.org/pen_ (http://www.southerncampaign.org/pen) and are fully searchable. So far Will Graves and I, as well as a few other contributors, have done more than 4200 of the applications, which I estimate to be about 20% of the total. Pardon my shouting, but MORE TRANSCRIBERS ARE NEEDED. I have transcribed all the applications of Harrises who served from or in VA and elsewhere in the South, as well as those of many others with surnames associated with Harrises of VA (Maupin, Dabney, Eppes, Worsham, etc). The transcriptions are of applications made under all the pension acts covering soldiers and widows, even if they were rejected. There is a link at the above web site to an explanation of the various acts, but the main ones are as follows: Act of 18 Mar 1818 covering only Continental soldiers who were impoverished Act of 1 May 1820 requiring pensioners under the 1818 act to declare their property and describe their family living with them Act of 7 Jun 1832 covering both Militia and Continental soldiers regardless of income. Soldiers had to state the year and place of their birth and where they had lived during and after the Revolution. Acts of 1836 and later covering widows. These acts generally required widows to prove their marriages, so many of the files include original family registers and copies of marriage bonds. The web site is mainly devoted to the history of the Revolutionary War, but whenever appropriate we indicate any records of genealogical significance in the file. As always, serious researchers will want to see the original records. Footnote.com is by far the best source, since it includes every item in each file, and the images are often clearer than those of either NARA microfilms or HeritageQuest, which are not complete. Footnote.com also has other searchable Revolutionary-War records, as well as documents from all other periods of American history. C. 1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [changes subject] Virginia Citizens Involved in Revolutionary War
    2. Cleon has written that he is transcribing the Rev War pension claims for persons who may have been associated with the Harrises [of colonial and Revolutionary Virginia, I am assuming]. [For those not acquainted with the Harrises of Hanover Co., Louisa Co. and Albemarle Co. and perhaps adjoining counties, this info may be of help to you also.] There were many Rev War pension acts, and the ones which appear in most of the online databases, such as HeritageQuest and Footnote.com, etc. were probably the Act of 1832, after the death of a good many men who participated in the Revolution. I saw a chart one time of ALL the acts, but the 1832 was the most generous and that is when widows could make claims. One book which MAY be in your favorite genealogical library was published years ago and pertains to Rejected Rev War pensions. Look for it. I found one of my ancestors listed in that book, which lists are broken down by States/Colonies. Pensions are a good way to establish whether or not one or many of our ancestors were participants, but those are NOT the only evidences. Sometimes in a court records of a county, you will read that the county is making an allowance for a wife and her children because the man of the house is participating in the war. I don't recall that it was called the Revolution at that time, but then I don't remember everything I read. For Virginia, there are books of what were called Virginia Publick [sic] Claims. Janice Luck Abercrombie and Richard Slatten compiled lists of these claims, and in the past, I have written to the Library of Virginia for photocopies of these accounts in what are called *county bookslets.* Here is the a description of these records, taken from the Family History Library catalog. Do a search in the Family History Library catalog [or your State library, or your local library] for the authors' names and see if you can borrow the book[s] I believe my FH Center had an index compiled by the same authors. As I remember, the books were published by the Iberian Press, of Athens Ga. Iberian is now called New Papyrus and this is the website: _http://genealogyresources.org/_ (http://genealogyresources.org/) . Here is Family History Library catalog's description of the transcript of these booklets: Information extracted from court booklets in the Public Service Claims, Record Group 48, at the Virginia State Library and Archives. During the Revolutionary War supplies were procured from the citizens by purchase, borrowing, impressment or force. After the war citizens submitted claims to local county courts. Reports about these claims compiled and sent to Richmond by the courts and became the court booklets. Hope this helps!!! E.W.Wallace **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. This is a significant reduction in regular costs, which are ususally 25 markers for $151. If you have been putting off getting a male Harris tested, this is an excellent opportunity to do so at a reduced price. The best way to find the location is to go to Google search Familytreedna should be the first one in the list go to 'pricing' put Harris in the box about 2" down on the right choose the Harris project with the most men For some reason I can never get the web site to open except by going to Google. you might get to it directly here: _https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=Q41837&special=true_ (https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=Q41837&special=true) use the drop down box to get to the test you want. 2. Gail wrote: DO YOU HAVE ANY INFO ON THE MCORQUODALES? GAIL //////////////////////////////////////////////// Tentative answer: James and Joseph McCorcale appear on the 1795 tax list of Mason Co., KY. Is that any help? (County clerks had trouble spelling, so always misspell, particularly with the surname you are seeking). Madison Co. clerk, in one very brief deed, spelled Harris three ways: Harris, Harriss, Harrys [being creative, no doubt!] How to find some of your families of Kentucky who MAY have originated in Virginia. First search this Library of Virginia website--which lists [abstracted, not the full document] the land patents of Virginia, even up to 1990. The oldest patents appear at the very bottom of the list, so go to the last page for your surname, if you can. [You will quickly learn how to manipulate that list]. Click on the number you desire, and an abstract will appear. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm You may also want to check the Virginia county Chancery records. There is an explanation of what a chancery suit is. Many of these cases were brought by heirs of an ancestor, perhaps many years later. _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/chancery/index.htm_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/chancery/index.htm) (Remove any punctuation fore and aft which AOL may add to these URLs) Also check the Family History Library catalog on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Go to the tab labeled Library [on the opening screen] At the drop down menu's bottom is *Catalog* Use a surname search. A lot of these family histories have been filmed or fiched, and I even saw one the other night which was digitized!!! A new experience for FH Library in Salt Lake City. The digitization because of the faded print seemed to be very faint, however. Some of the family histories have been filmed or fiched, and perhaps through a nearby LDS family history center, you can order one or two interesting family histories. Also do a PLACE search in the catalog. The name sounds Scottish to me. A good many Scots-Irish migrated down Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania. Penn's heirs stuck them on the Pennsylvania frontier so they would fight the Indians. But, being dissatisfied, many of them migrated down the Valley to Virginia and thence to Kentucky. My McCords, I believe, did this. They were first in Augusta Co., VA, but later in Albemarle Co., VA. (Search all counties in VA, says an expert. Virginians had itchy feet, and besides the boundaries of the counties changed all the time) Also, read about the Scotch or Scots-Irish -- perhaps on the internet. I think some North Carolina authors wrote such books. An internet URL to search is given below. There are three volumes of Chalkley's abstracted records of Augusta Co., and each volume is separately indexed. You MIGHT find your family--or someone with a similar name. Scottish names get misspelled terribly. So don't be a stickler. Just look at all the Macks!!! _www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/) Remember there are three volumes, so search all three volumes--in the index, that is!!! Link to index may be on second page for the first volumes. It is at the bottom of the screen in most cases. Ask your public librarian whether there is a public library in your town--or a nearby town--which subscribes to the online database called HeritageQuest. This contains censuses, a good many books with expired copyrights, PERSI [don't ask me to explain--it takes too long], some Rev. War pension records, including a good many from Madison Co. and Estill Co. and a few from Garrard Co. That's all the advice I am giving today!!! 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Limited Notes on Early Maupin Families of Virginia
    2. Because Harris is such a common name, I have tried to round up surnames belonging to some of the Harris spouses. Maupin is one such name. I am fairly sure this is a Huguenot name, but I do generally do Huguenot research. I only note that several of the Harris offispring of colonial Louisa Co., Va and later of Albemarle Co., VA married into names which sound suspiciously French to me. The land patents frequently refer to these patentees as *French Refugees* - French Protestants, who were persecuted--and killed--in France. They fled all over to other European countries, a fascinating group. Here are some minimal notes on some early Maupin males: If you use this material in your own family histories, please add the citation. Others will wonder *Where did he/she get this *stuff*?* Cite your sources is important to have your work respected. E.W.Wallace Jan 2004 Cornelius Maupin is mentioned in this paragraph: "Daniel Maupin patented on Moorman's River in 1748, and his brother, Gabriel Maupin also lived in the county [Albemarle Co.] Daniel, William and Cornelius Maupin, believed to have been grandsons of Daniel Maupin, were Revolutionary soldiers. Dr. Socrates Maupin, professor of chemistry at Hampden-Sydney College and afterwards of the University of Virginia faculty, was of this family, as was Chapman W. Maupin, who was a magistrate in 1835." (John H. Gwathmey, "Albemarle County" in TWELVE VIRGINIA COUNTIES WHERE THE WESTERN MIGRATION BEGAN [Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981], p. 343) Cornelius Maupin was a witness in Augusta Co., Deed Bk 23:370, dated 7 Apr 1781 (Revolution ended latter part of 1783). 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Some Harris and Dent Connections, Madison Co., KY
    2. Wanda Flesher wrote, in part, I'm especially interested in Henry Harris, born 1742, Orange Co, VA and he had moved to Madison Co KY by 1796. He was in Orange Co VA when he first signed up for duty in the Rev War. There are some indications he may have been in Albemarle Co VA and in Maryland before going to Madison Co KY. Henry's family and the Samuel Dent family went to Madison Co about the same time. One of Henry Harris's daus was married to one of Samuel Dent's son's. I believe there is very strong connection to the other Madison Co. Harrises. Does any one have that dab of information that I need to make the connection? My response: No doubt you have examined some of the marriage records of Madison Co., KY compiled by Bill and Kathy Vockery. If not, here is some material, but it is not comprehensive!!! These are the headings: Groom, Bride, bond date, bondsman, consent, return [if any] Dent, Bailey - Harris, Becky -3 Apr 1815 - Harris, John - Harris, John FB [fa. of bride] 13 April 1815 Park-Parke, James - Dent, Olly - 24 Jan 1817 - Parks, Jesse - Dent, Samuel - FB - 26 Jan 1817 Park, Catherine - MG (apparently both bride and groom had to have consent of parents) Parks, Jesse - Dent, Anne - 8 Aug 1809 Dent, Samuel & Parks Ebenezer [bondsmen both] 10 Aug 1809 Harris, Henry - Jane Manion 10 Aug 1801- Manion, Ambrose - Manion, James - FB [consent] [no return listed] (If this latter couple seem to be in your family, then let me know, as there other Harris and Manion marriages.) Source: Bill & Kathy Vockery, Madison County Kentucky Marriage Records Vol. 1 1786-1822 [Richmond, KY: published by authors, 1993) No other Dent persons in Vol. 1 of Marriages by Vockery & Vockery I looked at a transcript of some early Tax lists for Madison Co., and Henry Harris [a name not known in the family Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY, formerly of Albemarle Co., VA nor his father Robert of Louisa Co., VA] and the earliest date Henry Harris appears in Madison Co., tax lists is 1799. Christopher Harris appears in two Virginia personal property tax lists of 1787--in Madison co., KY as well as Albemarle Co., VA. Look in the Family History Library catalog on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) for the author Netti Schreiner-Yantis, et al for the Title *The 1787 Census of Virginia*. That way, you can take this print out of title and author to your library and ask whether you can interlibrary loan this three-volume set of books of personal property tax lists for Virginia, which included Kentucky and what is now West Virginia. The 3rd volume is the index to the first two volumes. This work is an excellent people-finder for late Virginians [after the Revolution] and for early Kentuckians, when Kentucky was still a part of Virginia!!! If your library is large, it may be shelved with the census indexes, as it is in my local Family History Center. Otherwise, you may have to hunt for it. It is about 20-30 years old but invaluable. Xerox all the Harris listings in the index. Then arrange the pages numberically, from the index. Then search the pages--or photocopy them--and take them home!!! E.W.Wallace Check out these URLs for county formation in Virginia. See how big Orange Co. was during years 1775-1783. Check Augusta Co. and Louisa Co. Your man MAY have been in any of those counties.!!! Tell your friends who research Virginia about these URLS. They may save a LOT of headaches, because we may need to search a LOT of counties. _http://www.myvirginiagenealogy.com/index.htm_ (http://www.myvirginiagenealogy.com/index.htm) http://www.myvirginiagenealogy.com/va_maps/va_cf.htm **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Shelton Family of Louisa Co., Albemarle Co., Lunenburg Co., VA & Perhaps of KY
    2. A researcher of Madison Co., KY was inquiring about a Shelton family. I have no information about a Shelton family located in Kentucky, but perhaps that family, as did many others of early Kentucky, came from Virginia. My research of several decades indicates that early Kentuckians came from lots of places, as reflected in some of the Kentucky Court of Appeals books abstracted by Michael L. Cook and Bettie Cummings Cook. Mainly, however, they were Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, but Marylanders and others should be considered *suspect*. (Round up the usual suspects, as William Dollarhide, favorite genealogical author and lecturer, frequently reminds us. That is why I collected this material on Shelton family, who married into my Harris family of Albemarle Co. and earlier of Louisa Co., VA.) Also note the names Glen[n], Gentry, and Dabney names associated with the Harris family of colonial Louisa Co., VA, perhaps Albemarle Co., VA and later of Madison Co., KY. And then everywhere!!! Oh, yes, if you have any material on Nathaniel Williams, cited in one of the deeds below, please give a whistle. He is either a *lost* distant cousin, or, hopefully, of an older generation--a *lost* great uncle!!!! CAUTION: If you use this material in your own work, please include the citation(s). Cite your sources. If soneone cannot replicate your [or my] work, then your work is virtually useless. Submitted by E.W.Wallace Preparer: E.W. Wallace Revised Feb 1999 Rev Oct 2001; edited 6/03 WILLIAM SHELTON. William Shelton, who was married to a daughter of Major Robert Harris of colonial Louisa Co, VA--Lucy Harris--was probably a resident in King William Co., VA before he removed to Louisa or Albemarle Co., VA. Or, more probably, there were several William Sheltons. Shelton was one of two executors of his mother-in-law Mourning Glenn Harris (qv), will proved in Albemarle March Court 1776. The Sheltons may have held land in both Louisa and Albemarle Cos. Also in Lunenburg Co., as indicated in a deed cited below. 1762 - An earlier deed found in Lunenburg Co. indicates that in 1762 William Shelton was of Albemarle Co. Lunenburg Co. DB 7, Jan 13, 1762 from William Shelton of Albemarle County, to Tyree Glen of L[unenburg], for 100 pds., a certain tract of land in L on the east or lower side of Reedy Cr containing 274 acres, being the lower part of the land Joseph Minor purchased of Mackie, and by Minor sold to Joseph Gentry, and by Gentry sold to the said William Shelton, all via L[unenburg Co.] deeds. The land is bounded as per the deed of Joseph Gentry to the said William Shelton. Signed - Wm. Shelton. Wit - Nathll Williams, William Smithson, Jeremiah Glen. Recorded Feb 2, 1762. (TLC Genealogy, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS 7 & 8 (1761-1764) [Miami Beach: TLC Genealogy, 1990], p. 21) 1768 - William Shelton in mid-1768 purchased some land in Albemarle Co. from William Dabney and his wife Jane. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] reply to eleanor re harris/ bullock, allen, etc, families
    2. belva cauthen
    3. eleanor   we have been out of town but, no, sorry to say, i do not know more about the  sherwood harris who was associated with leonard henley bullock.    yes, this would have been the same leonard henley bullock, who was the  brother of my nathaniel bullock/ mary hawkins.   my own focus for the past 25 to 30 years has been on my own harris line and family, starting with them in gwinnett/ dekalb cos, ga in 1830 but who were shortly in cobb co, ga by 1834 and settling in paulding co, ga by 1840.   this has been such a challenge that i have not focused exclusively on other  of my lines and families and have had help with other lines, like my allen  and bullock families.   it was also not until i had gotten my william harris, sr/ frances goode back to  lunenburg co, va that i learned and noted that there were connections with  the granville co, nc families and the lunenburg co, va families but, again, i  have not focused per se on granville co, nc and still do not know for sure if  there is kinship re the granville co, nc harris family and my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who were in lunenburg co, va, by 1746.   again, kathryn wiggins in her geneagraph, which she compiled in the 1980's  re the genealogy of the family of our captain thomas harris, says that this  richard harris/ sarah, who was born ca 1694 and who she says was the brother of william harris/ judith hudson; david harris/ jane landy richardson; stephen harris; george harris; edward harris;  etc, was the father of richard harris/ margaret kimbrough, who may or may not have been the same as richard harris/ priscilla holmes; sherwood harris/ jane hudspeth; and robert harris/ lemender smith.   although i cannot confirm what kathryn wiggins wrote in this geneagraph, i have already talked about that these were the same mitchell; davenport; and taylor families both in lunenburg co, va and granville co, nc and that this was the same joseph davenport, who had moved from granville co, nc to newberry co,sc and who was the father-in-law of our samuel goode,  brother of my frances goode harris, children of my mackerness goode, sr also of lunenburg co, va and laurens co, sc.   i also have more to say about these granville co, nc/ lunenburg co, va connections re the harris families, etc, later.   pat replied recently that a supposed or proposed descendant of both richard harris/ priscilla holmes and robert harris/ lemender smith had been tested but with no matches.   so, again, besides other descendants of william harris/ judith hudson, i am hopeful that eventually we can also find other harris descendants of this richard harris/ margaret kimbrough and/ or richard harris/ priscilla holmes; sherwood harris/ jane hudspeth; and this robert harris/ lemender smith to also be tested.   logic says to me in looking at these connections, and from what we do know, that they probably should test into either our harris dna group 8 or harris dna group 6, but like a lot of this confusion and controversy we are having with our harris dna group 6 and harris dna group 8, this is not going to be resolved until we can hopefully find other harris descendants of the aforementioned to be tested.       belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910

    1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] [MADKY] Several Robert Harrises of Madison Co., KY
    2. I have a Robert that married a MaryTaylor in Madison County and died there and he was almost a hundred when he died in 1887. Their children are James Fannie Mary Thomas. Robert' father and mother are Christopher Jr and Elizabeth Grubbs. Carolyn In a message dated 8/20/2008 11:30:48 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: One Robert Harris is allegedly the son of Christopher Harris the elder, who migrated from Albemarle Co., VA to Madison Co., KY ca 1787. The notes given below probably refer to several Robert Harrises of Madison Co., KY. Can anyone contribute better information so that these persons can be properly sorted? Submitted by E.W.Wallace ROBERT HARRIS Son of Christopher I and his 1st wife Mary Dabney. Refer to will of his father. His birthdate, 24 Aug 1749, apparently unconfirmed, is taken from DAR application 598925. Those of his siblings and most of the marriages are given, indicating the applicant MAY have used a Bible record. (Writer is NOT in possession of DAR application cited above.) A Robert Harris appears in [Revolutionary War] Public Service Claims, Albemarle County Court Booklet, No. 156 [same number as Christopher Harris in same booklet]. Much of the old handwriting cannot be read by this writer. It appears "for diets furnished drivers for 6.140". He seemingly was paid 6 shillings in Continental money. (Copy of unnumbered page obtained from Virginia State Library, May 1991.) Robert Harris and his father Christopher Harris were both signers of a petition to divide the county of Lincoln [Kentucky, but then Virginia] into three counties, Lincoln, Mercer and Madison. 1786. Granted. Many of the signers of this petition were at Boonesboro, states the compiler. (Katherine Phelps Caperton, "A Partial List of Those at Fort Boonesborough," in THE REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL. 23, p. 151 [renumbered, it seems, from original].) Robert Harris later resided in Madison Co., and, according to Hazel A. Spraker in THE BOONE FAMILY, his wife was Nancy Grubbs, daughter of William Grubbs and his wife Susanna Hearne. He was in the 1810 census, Madison Co., KY. He is specified "Tate's Creek." He is shown in the 1820 census index of Madison Co. Apparently he and Nancy, his wife, were witnesses in court for one John Jackson. At July court 1789, John Jackson was ordered to pay Nancy Harris for two days; "same to pay Robt Harris same." (No doubt this was because they were witnesses for Jackson.) Marriages in Madison Co. of some of Robert's children; FB = father of bride; FG = father of groom. (Bill & Kathy Vockery MARRIAGES OF MADISON CO, KY ,Vol. I, 1786-1822 [Richmond, KY: Privately published, 1993], p. 37) There were two other marriages of a Robert Harris in 1814 and 1815, leading us to believe there may have been several Robert Harrises in Madison Co. at the same time.. Possibly another child of Robeert Harris was Elizabeth Harris, as stated in Hazel A. Spraker, THE BOONE FAMILY, under the heading of "No. 441, Hettie Boone Copher," first wife of Tyree H. Berry, a Baptist preacher, "son of John Berry of Kentucky, and wife Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Robert Harris and wife Nancy Grubbs." Evidently the Berrys moved to or near Boonslick Country, MO. Other children of Robert Harris are listed in THE BOONE FAMILY under "Harris Family." A Different Robert Harris? Interesting names are Glenn, Austin, Harris and Overton and many other names listed below. I'm not sure what this book contains or if it would be of any use since I have not seen this book and can't find a copy close to where I live. But it may be in a library close to other researchers. Notes: Ancestors and descendants of Alexander Walker Glenn (1799-1878), and of his wife, Nancy Walker. Alexander moved from Kentucky to Missouri and married Nancy about 1829. In 1849 they moved to land near Lecompton, Kansas. Harris   New Kent Sct. 11th October 1716 John Q. [?]   Following is an extraction of George Dabney's Will of 24 Oct 1729. George Dabney of King William County...daughter Mary Pettus...grandson Dabney Pettus...grandson George Anderson...my son George Dabney the tract of land I now live on, and if no male heirs then to my son William Dabney, together with the other plantation on the same whereon he the said George lives, with my loving wife Eliza. have the use of the plantation during her natural life...also to my said son George Dabney 600 of my 1200 acres of land on Cubb Camp Creek in Hanover County and the upper end thereof and that the same be laid off to him and them so as not to prejudice the settlement and plantation I have already made on the said land for my son William Dabney...also unto the said George Dabney half of my household stuff on my said plantation on Cubb Camp Creek...also to George Dabney all the negroes that he has now in his possession...and also my negroe fellow Tom now living at Cubb Creek...to my son William Dabney all my 500 acres of land and plantation thereon in Hanover County between the South Anna of Pamunky and Taylors Creek, and also I give him all my tract of land and plantation in Hanover County on Wolf Swamp together with the household stuff and stock on the two plantations...also to my son William Dabney all that 600 acres of land and plantation the lower half of my 1200 acres on Cubb Camp Creek in Hanover County...and half of my stock and household stuff on plantation at Cubb Camp Creek...daughter Susannah Dabney...wife Elizabeth Dabney...two daughters Sarah and Judith Dabney...daughters Susannah, Sarah and Judith...   So...the above will is the George Dabney who had the land patent next to William Harris along Cubb Creek in Hanover/Louisa. His sons, George and William inherited this land. William also inherited land along Taylors Creek and also along Wolf Swamp (which I feel both lands were the two tracts from the George Alves deed).   William Dabney, from quick info I can find, ca. 1706-1771, had a son George Dabney ca. 1740-1824. This George Dabney is the one who would have been the witness to Ralph Harris' marriage to Mary McCaul on 18 Dec 1785 in Goochland Co.   Following are land patent descriptions that help define the area around Wolf Swamp . When you look at the descriptions of the neighbors you can see how they connect.   Hanover County Virginia 1733 - 1735 Deeds - Wills - Inventories by Rosalie Edith Davis, Page 33: "Indent John STANLEY Planter Hanover County,to William HICKS and John HICKS of Par. afsd.; planters; Lease andrelease; 1600 pounds good sweet scented Tobacco 176 acres in par. and co.afsd. on North fork of the Newfound River ... Signed John STANLEY ; Wit; GEORGE HARRIS, James ABBOTT,William CREW Sept. 6, 1734 ack. by John Stanley" http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/hanover/misc/vestry.txt At a Vestry held for St. Pauls Parish 8br 10th 1719. P. 265 (205)  "The Lands of Mr. Geo Alves, Thos. Harris, Geo. Harris, Rich'd Clough, Geo. Dabney Junr., John Crenshaw & David Crenshaw, of which Mr. Geo Alves and Thos. Harris were Overseers who made this return, the above Order perform'd. Geo. Alves, Tho. Harris."   Using the above deed, plus the patents and other supporting facts, I feel strongly that William Harris of Wolf Swamp , father to Ralph, Graves and George, was the son of George Harris. George Harris was the son of William Harris and was baptized in St. Peter's Parish 13 April 1701. William Harris either bought this land with no record surviving or he received it from George Alves. George Harris was alive in 1763 where he appears on the tax list with 73 acres of land. He is gone by 1782, the next available tax list. Interestingly, in 1801, when George Harris [Jr.] received all the land of William Harris Wolf Swamp in Hanover (and Graves and Ralph received all the land of William in Prince Edward County ), George also received 72 acres from David Harris in Hanover . Was this in any way the 73 acres that descended from George Sr.?   George Alves, VAPB 10:212, 16 Dec 1714  4843a in St Pauls Parish in New Kent; James Taylors corner red oak at the head of Meadow Branch; standing on the side of a small creek called Taylor 's Creek; down Taylor 's Creek; standing on the North side of Taylor 's Creek; crossing Taylor 's Creek; on the South branch of Pamunkey River (called the South River ); across the River to a red oak standing on the River Bank; at the head of a small branch; down the branch as it windeth to; (of the small branch at) the South (Anna) River; up the South Anna River; of Taylors Creek (in the South Anna); up Taylors Creek; Meadow Branch (in Taylor 's Creek); up Meadow Branch    Thomas Stanley, VAPB 12:124, 10 Dec 1724 250a adj John Williamson, William Harris, Morris, Chiswell, Thomas Stanley on both sides Cawthorns Branch; in Thomas Stanley's line on Cawthorn Branch; up Cawthorn Branch in a straight line; Williamson's corner ash in Cawthorn Branch; John Williamson's line; Williamson's corner red oak & spanish oaks in William Harris's line; William Harris's line; in William Harris's line; Morris's line;Chiswell's line; Stanley 's corner shrubby white oak in Chiswell's line; Thomas Stanley's line   John Williamson; VAPB 10:436, 11 Jul 1719 400a between the W fork of Cedar Creek & George Alves's line in St Pauls Parish; Cawthons branch running into the West Fork of Cedar Creek; George Alves's line; Alves's corner red oak; in George Alves's line; along a survey made for Capt Nathaniel West; Nathaniel West line; branch of Cedar Creek; up the West Branch of Cedar Creek   William Morris; VAPB 11:325; 20 Feb 1723/24 1850a on the lower side of Taylor 's Creek; Alves's upper corner elm on Taylors Creek; Alves's line ** now belonging to William Morris & George Dabney **; running across to Mr Charles Chiswells line; in Charles Chiswells line; Charles Chiswells line; on Taylors Creek; down Taylors Creek in a straight line   VAPB 11:2215, Sep 1723 William Morris 400 acres; Dabney's red oak; Dabneys corner white oak; in Charles Chiswell's line; Charles Chiswell's line   When you look at the Deedmapper plats in Hanover County , that have been platted by other researchers, you can see how all these people connect. With Wolf Swamp at the center [which is my area of focus], it is surrounded (clockwise) by the lands of Charles Chiswell, Thomas Stanley, John Williamson, James Taylor, George Alves, and William Morris. There is a big empty space in the center of all these plats which, of course, is where I am trying to focus.   Lynda SoRelle Harris DNA Group 8 #42469
