since, per the lunenburg co, va deeds, i had found previously re the samuel harris, who was associated with this james roberts, jr and the claibornes, were the only two deeds i had found, i am going to cite other of these lunenburg co, va deeds re the claibornes and talk about these connections. actually in finding these lunenburg co, va deeds on line re the claibornes, i noted that this samuel harris, who witnesses this 1781 deed re john claiborne, is indicated to have been the same samuel harris who witnessed the 1761 deed re james roberts, jr to richard claiborne. as noted, john claiborne also sold land to james harris. again, i cannot identify either this samuel harris or james harris but i am going to talk about how these deeds re these individuals also do relate to my own interests and that do indicate that they may have been related harris family. i will cite these deeds first and, then, come back and talk about them. until pat brought up this samuel harris/ ann, i had not focused on him for quite some time and instead have been more focused on samuel harris/ lucy camp. last night i went back to see what i had learned about this samuel harris/ ann in the past and also last night. now that i have, the info, again, based on connections, would indicate to me that he may have been related harris family to my william harris, sr/ france goode, etc, but i still could not say exactly who he was. was he possibly william harris/ judith hudson' s son, samuel harris? it is so curious to me in how little that can be definitely found on their 10 sons; what happened to them; and why so few are interested in them. mainly i am going to talk about what i have noted. i have found this samuel harris/ ann on the 1764 tithe list and in henry blagrave's district. this was henry blagrave's daughter anna blagrave who married jeremiah glenn. jeremiah glenn witnessed the 1765 mecklenburg co, va deed wherein my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold land to james hall. again, it was also james hall's son-in-law richard winn, who was also involved with the 1796, etc, mecklenburg co, va estate of judith hudson harris. then jeremiah glenn/ and anna blagrave glenn also moved to laurens co, sc and their son, william glenn, again, per laurens co, sc deeds i have posted in the past, was involved there with my charles harris/ jane cannon. the info indicates also, per samuel harris' association with the claibornes, that a james harris and a humprey harris are also associated with him and both this james harris and gideon moon, who is also on this same 1764 lunenburg co, va tithe list, are both associated with the same john claiborne. it is these connections with gideon moon and other info i will talk about that lead me to believe that this samuel harris was also somehow related to my william harris, sr/ frances goode; edward harris; and william harris/ judith hudson, which i will, of course say more about, but, first, here is samuel harris on this 1764 lunenburg co, va tithe list in henry blagrave's district. also, speaking of gideon moon, the moons also moved to laurens co, sc and also inter-married with jeremiah glenn/ anna blagrave's family. In reviewing my address book, I ran across the URL for subject list _http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/albemarle/census/1785cens.txt_ (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/albemarle/census/1785cens.txt) I note a number of Harris males are listed. Also a goodly number of surnames whom I find among the in-laws of the Harrises of Madison Co., KY--Gentry, Maupin, Chenault, Shelton, Brown, McCord, et al. Those researchers of Madison Co., KY [and counties adjoining Madison and counties formed from Madison Co.] may find some missing ancestors or collaterals in this list. Tell your cousins of this list!!! E.W.Wallace **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? There's a new fashion blog, plus the latest fall trends and hair styles at StyleList.com. As I read over the 1704 tax list for Virginia, I noted many omissions of many families, who certainly had been granted large acreages of land. Of course, in any tax situation, one finds delinquencies [failure to pay taxes]. One might consider these possibilities, other than failure to pay taxes. 1. The tax lists may be incomplete. After all, 1704 was a long time ago, and Virginia counties have suffered floods, fires, etc. Some lists may have been lost. I seem to notice that Northern Neck counties were generally excluded. What is your observation? 2. The taxables may have been so far back in the woods that the tax collector could not get to them. In some North Carolina colonial counties, I note that the captain of the militia frequently was responsible for the list of tithables. In other cases, it was the sheriff. I am ignorant of a LOT of Virginia history, and Hening's Statutes is more than I can tackle at this stage in my life. Comments of others more conversant with colonial Virginia history will be welcomed. E.W.Wallace **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? thanks e.w. for this 1704 tax list. this is a very interesting list. i have noted that, per this 1704 tax list, which e.w. posted that the whole list could be posted but would have to be the entire list and did not know if harris hunters could or would take the whole list so, i want to make some comments about those on this list. as e.w. posted re this 1704 tax list, there were 3 willam harrises on it in this new kent co, va area, which was called parish of st peters and st paul, 1704. also, in this same st peters and st pauls parish in 1704, there were: a benjamin harris; a john harris; a robert harris; and a thomas harris. there was also a william harris in king and queen co, va. since our george alvis/ allvis is also on this list and in this same parish of st peters and st paul in 1704, one of these william harrises and this edmond harris, and interesting that he was called edmond, are our william harris/ mary giles b ca 1672 and his brother, our edmond/ edward harris b ca 1674, sons of our major william harris, 2nd wife, alice, who remarried george alvis. i want to also talk about others on this list of interest to me but will do this in separate posts. one of the things i wanted to ask is where are/ were the overtons, who are not on this list? belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910
This may of interest to those interested in various men named Sherwood Harris [several, I have found] and also some of the early settlers of Madison Co., KY. One of the New Kent County genealogical websites has a list of the 1704 taxpayers in various counties of Virginia. Remember in 1704, there were NOT many counties beyond the Tidewater. _http://www.vagenweb.org/newkent/1704va.txt_ (http://www.vagenweb.org/newkent/1704va.txt) A number of Harris names appear, but, to confuse matters, there are three listings for a William Harris, all in New Kent Co. in 1704. Perhaps these were the men about whom Dr. Malcolm Hart Harris wrote an article, published in an old issue [or two] of The Virginia Genealogist. If pressed, I will find my citation to that article, published, I believe in two issues. If you want to see what else is on that website, chop off some of the last words in the above URL. Remember these folks intermarried a lot, so you may find other relatives on that list!!! E.W.Wallace **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? Belva wrote, in partial answer, to a query from a subscriber: i do not know more about the ?sherwood harris who was associated with leonard henley bullock Answer from E.W.Wallace [partial--because these fellows show up in a LOT of records, particularly Sherwood Harris in Madison Co., deed indexes. I believe he was an agent, perhaps for the speculators involved in Boonesborough. But I cannot prove that statement.] Sherwood Harris - this is a common first name among Harris males, it seems, but this name appears frequently in the grantor deed indexes of Madison Co., KY.. Tthe fact that this particularly Sherwood Harris was associated with a Leonard Henley Bullock puts him in a time and a place. [Sherwood seems to have been a favorite name among various Harris males.] These two men were from colonial Granville Co. NC. Bullock was one of the *partners* of Col. Richard Henderson in the founding of Transylvania Company, sometimes called Henderson & Co. Henderson and several other proprietors were involved in setting up Boonesborough [in Madison Co., KY currnetly]. A Filson Club publication called Boonesborough tells a great deal about this effort to set up a 14th or 15th colony [depending on how one counts]. It was compiled by George W. Ranck and has been digitized. It is on HeritageQuest, the genealogical database available at many public libraries which subscribe. I may have a few notes on Len Henley Bullock, as he is sometimes called. If interested, let me know. He is NOT my ancestor, but he was a close associate of some of my relatives, particularly as a bondsman in Granville Co. NC. E.W.Wallace **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? I prefaced my Installment 1 with the following. In case you are familiar with these words, skip on down to Installment 2. As indicated a few days ago, I said I would share some of my notes concerning William Overton, who is probably the father of Temperance Overton Harris, wife of William Harris, believed to be the father of Robert Harris, surveyor of Louisa Co., VA. I have not proved anything but have been *surveying the literature* as my deceased research professor told us was the first step in beginning a research project. I have tried to indicate the sources in each case, and I hope you will be able to check out these sources yourself, although a trip to Richmond, VA may be necessary to find the information which is in collections in the Historical Society of Virginia, not to be confused with the Library of Virginia. I have not worked on this particular biography for some years. Look for subsequent installments. Please note that Temperance's alleged sister was Barbara Overton Winston. Many records refer to the widow Barbara Winston, who seemingly did not remarry. If the Torrence book has been digitized and is online, please notify Harris -Hunters, so that all may benefit from research. E.W.Wallace IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Digitized version of Torrence's book on the Overton family of colonial Virginia is now on HeritageQuest, which MAY be available at your local public library or at your State Library. If not available, ask your public librarian to help you find a library in your State which subscribes. Then try to obtain a card from that library, paying a fee for a library card [annual] if necessary. Armchair research is *in* these days with high gasoline prices!!! EWW Submitted by E.W.Wallace Installment 2 [some may be repetitive] Torrence gives two dates for the birthdate of William Overton because of conflict in family records of descendants. Also there was conflict in whether the husband of Barbara Overton was John or James Winston. Of William Overton, Malcolm Hart Harris has written much of the same information as cited above. Harris traces Robert Harris through land patents and court documents. He writes that "it is certain that the lands of Robert Harris lay along the headwaters of the branches of Ware Creek in New Kent County." Harris gives specific locations as shown on modern-day maps. He adds: "This land was owned by Robert Harris from prior to 1659 until after 1675/6." Harris then cites a warrant issued by Governor Sir William Berkeley to the Escheator of New Kent County. Among those appearing on the jury were Wm. Overton, Evan Jones (Overton's co-patentee in an early land patent), and Robt. Harris. About this jury composition, Harris makes these remarks: "This record confirms that Robert Harris was qualified for jury service, was a freeholder and resident of the County of New Kent. Of equal interest is the association of William Overton on this jury. "William Overton, the immigrant, was born in England 3 Dec 1638. He came to Virginia and later his betrothed, Elizabeth Waters, followed him and they were married on the deck of the ship in which she came on 24 Nov 1670 at Yorktown. They acquired land in New Kent County where they were established in 1673 when he served on the jury." Harris lists the children of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters: Elizabeth, William, Temperance (q.v.), Samuel, James, Barbara. One John Overton and his wife Penelope appear in the deed books of Old Rappahannock Co., VA in 1687. (Refer to Ruth & Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF (OLD) RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1686-1688 3 March 1686-12 November 1688 [McLean, VA: The Antient Press, 1990], p. 92) Their land was on Totuskey Creek. A recent visit in the late 1990s to England by this writer, however, indicates that Overton is a rather common place name in England. Therefore, it is conceivable that the Overton family along the James River bears no relationship to that family in Old Rapphannock Co., VA. Later Overton Family Members - 1782 There is evidence in 1782 tax list of Hanover Co., VA (formed from New Kent Co.) of the prevalence of Overton family members and evidence of the beginning use of this surname as a given name, especially for members of the Harris family. Since surnames of other families with whom the Harrises are intermarried are found in Hanover Co. also (Glen, Grubbs, Gentry, Dabney), they were probably interrelated. The following were listed in Capt John Thomson's and Thomas Price's companies of militia--list of John Lawrence, gent'n. Samuel Overton (estate) 7 whites; 69 blacks. William Overton (estate) 1 white; 29 blacks. Mildred Overton 4 whites; 3 blacks. One would deduce from the number of slaves that the Overtons were of the planter class. Overton Surnames in Northern Neck Virginia Edmond Overton and his widow Margaret Overton appear in Richmond Co., VA records: It is unknown whether Edmond Overton was related to the Overtons of Tidewater Virginia. He was deceased by 4 June 1714, Richmond Co., VA. Margt: her mark + Overton, John Rankin, and John White gave administrators bond on that date. (Ruth & Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF RICHMOND COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1711-1714, Richmond County Deeds, p. 50.) Comment: Richmond Co. is not the home of the City of Richmond, which is surrounded by Henrico Co. Richmond Co. is a Northern Neck county and is closer to Washington, DC than it is to Richmond, VA. Some Descendants of Overton in Kentucky From Thomas Speed, THE POLITICAL CLUB, DANVILLE, KENTUCKY, 1786-1790, BEING AN ACCOUNT OF AN EARLY KENTUCKY SOCIETY FROM THE ORIGINAL PAPERS RECENTLY FOUND (Louisville: Filson Club Publication No. 9, 1894) "John and James Overton. At a very early day four Overton brothers came to Kentucky from Virginia. They were natives of Louisa County, Virginia. Clough Overton was killed at the battle of Blue Licks. Waller Overton settled in Fayette County. James and John Overton resided at Danville. They were sons of James Overton and grandsons of William Overton, who emigrated from England about 1670. "William, the emigrant, was a son of Colonel Overton, a distinguished soldier in the Parliamentary War. History first takes note of him a letter of October 2, 1647, from Lieutenant-General Oliver Cromwell to Sir Thomas Fairfax, General of the Parliamentary forces, recommending that Colonel Overton, then commanding a regiment in the field, be appointed Governor of Hull, an important fortress and depot of supplies. The appointment was made, and Colonel Overton remained in command of Hull and its garrison until the breaking out of the second Parliamentary War, when he again took the field, commanding a brigade at Dunbar and Inverkeithing, in which latter "mercy," as Cromwell called his victories, he won flattering mention in one of Cromwell's pious letters to Speaker Lenthal, of the House of Commons. "Colonel Overton was, however, a Presbyterian and 'friend of Milton,' as Carlyle says, and was suspected of sympathy with his brother Covenanters in his quarrel with Cromwell and the Puritans. "After the conquest of Scotland he was sent for to Whitehall and admonished; and again in December, 1654, he was sent for and questioned about a reported conspiracy to depose General Monk and place him (Colonel Overton) at the head of the army then in Scotland. The end of this last 'lecture' was a commitment to the Tower, where he probably died. "Colonel Overton's son William was born in 1638. He married Mary Waters, a young lady of Roman Catholic faith and considerable fortune, and these two, Presbyterian and Catholic, left England after the Restoration and settled in Virginia on a grant of five thousand acres in Hanover County, which they named Glen Cairn. "The following inscription on the tomb of one of their daughters is still legible: 'Here lies the body of Temperance Harris, deceased the 19th of February, 1710.' [Here is a footnote "A descendant of Mrs. Temperance Harris is Judge W. Overton Harris, of the Louisville Bar, to whom I am indebted for this account of the Overton family."] "One of their grandsons, John Overton, was an officer in the Revolutionary Army and father of the late William Overton, of Green Springs, in Louisa Co., Virginia, a country gentleman of wealth and social position, widely known for the virtues and graces which belonged to that class. [Another footnote is appended: In Wirt's Life of Patrick Henry is an account of a very interesting interview between Patrick Henry and Colonels Samuel and John Overton at the home of the latter.] "Four other grandsons were the John, James, Waller, and Clough who removed to Kentucky. Waller became a noted citizen of Fayette County, where his descendants still reside. His daughter married the celebrated lawwyer, William T. Barry, and a daughter of this marriage became the wife of Colonel James Taylor, of Newport, Kentucky. It is an interesting fact that Waller Overton was on the jury with Daniel Boone, in 1780, which escheated the lands of John Connolly, where the city of Louisville now stands. George May was the escheator of the court at Lexington, and the jury found that Connolly of his own free will had joined with the British forces. "James and John Overton were both lawyers. While they lived at Danville the practiced in the court in other parts of the State. James was sworn in as an attorney at Louisville, April 5, 1786. While both were marked men, John was destined to the greater success and distinction. "After practicing in Kentucky some years John Overton removed to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1789, where he .... [incomplete] Other Members of the Overton Family Relationships of these persons is unknown: John Pettus of Louisa Co., VA who died prior to Nov 1773 must have been descended from the Overton family or had married a woman who was a descendant. This is apparent from the names of his orphans as indicated in Louisa Co. WB 3-223. "Settlement of est. of John Pettus by Wm. Pettus, Admr. To orphans of John Pettus as follows; Samuel Overton Pettus, Ann Overton Pettus, Mary Waters Pettus, John Waters Pettus, Barbara Overton Pettus, Lucy Waters Pettus, Wm. Overton Pettus, Thomas Waters Pettus. Dated 4 Nov 1775. Signed: Saml. Ragland, George Lumsden, Thomas Minor. Rcd. 13 Nov 1773." Recently I posted some notes I have gathered over the years concerning the Overton family. As many of you know, the Overton family of early Virginia was closely associated with one of the baffling Harris families we research--William Harris and Temperance Overton, to be specific. Those of you who have access to Ancestry.com, either by private subscription, or through [we hope] your public library, may like to know that the works of Edward Pleasants Valentine have been digitized. In Vol. 4 is the will, it is said, of Temperance Overton Harris's reported sister--Barbara Overton Winston. It is on page 2376 and the following page. The Papers of Edward Pleasants Valentine - they may have been digitized on other databases, such as HeritageQuest. (I have not checked.) The more we know about the neighbors of this particular Harris family of colonial New Kent Co., the more we can hope to sort out who is who!!! as shown, hampton wade, son of robert wade, sr, who is shown, per the records of lunenburg co, va, to have been involved with samuel harris, as well as with my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson, married jane ellis, daughter of this john ellis of amelia co, va. this richard ellis, who witnessed lunenburg co, va deeds re both hampton wade, which, again, involved samuel harris, and who also witnessed deeds re our edward harris, sr on twitty's creek, is indicated to have been the brother of jane ellis wade. as shown, per the following info, jane ellis hampton re-married samuel perrin, son of joseph perrin, who, like our edward harris, sr, lived on twitty's creek in lunenburg/ charlotte co, va. again, these connections involving joseph perrin, as with a lot of this re these same families, are just so involved that they are difficult to totally and easily sum up period. again, joseph perrin, along with our harris family, etc, was also on the thomas partridge store ledger, in hanover co, va. joseph perrin, along with christopher hudson, witnessed the brunswick co, va deed wherein abraham cook, jr sold land to james hester in louisa co, va. this is the same abraham cook, jr, who in 1722 had a patent for 400 acres on the ridge between the north ann and little rivers, which was adjacent john harris, etc. “Abraham Cook Junr of Hanover County” patented 400 acres in Hanover County “on the Ridge between the North Anna and Little Rivers” which bordered John Harris, Edward Garland, John Perkins, and James Sutor." again, in 1723 a william harris also had a patent in hanover co, va on this same ridge between the north anna and little rivers adjacent abraham cook, jr and later a robert harris also had a patent there. again, given that both abraham cook, jr and joseph perrin moved also to brunswick/ lunenburg co, va where they continued to be involved with our harris family and/ or these same individuals and families, who were significantly involved with them, would certainly indicate to me that this was our captain thomas harris' harris line and family, who also had these patents on this ridge between the north anna and little rivers, which had been adjacent abraham cook, jr. here again is the harris info on these hanover co, va patents: 1723, also per these hanover co, va patents, william harris of hanover patents 400 acres in same between the northanna and little rivers, adjacent the land of abraham cook, jr and new market tract lines. then, again, the info also shows that in 1728, a robert harris also had a patent for land on this same ridge between the north anna and little river. robert harris of hanover co, va patents 400 acres in hanover co, va between the north anna and little rivers adjacent cook's lines, 1728. to continue with these connections re joseph perrin, per the info joseph perrin married rebecca ligon. whereas no one has been able to confirm this, thomas ligon did witness joseph perrin's charlotte co, va will. it is also shown, per these lunenburg co, va deeds that both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and thomas ligon/ joseph perrin were involved with thomas bedford. per the info, thomas bedford married mary ligon coleman, daughter of john coleman/ mary ligon, daughter of richard ligon/ mary worsham, son of thomas ligon/ mary harris, who was the daughter of our captain thomas harris and sister of our major william harris. lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 213, 1755, william harris of lunenburg co, va to william reade of same for 900 acres at the head branches of the bluestone creek, bounded by a new line, william tibbs, william harriss' old line. signed: william harriss. witnesses: robert wooding; thomas bedford; william jones. frances, wife of william harris, relinquised her right of dower. then, as also indicated, thomas bedford also witnessed this deed re the same william jones to thomas ligon, which bordered on joseph perrin, for land on twittys creek, which, again, is also where our edward harris, sr lived. lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 205, 1755, william jones of lunenburg co, va to thomas ligon of cumberland co, va for 90 pds, 300 acres in lunenburg co, va on twittys creek, bounded by joseph perrin. witnesses: henry deloney; henry blagrave, sr; thomas bedford. again, this was also joseph perrin's daughter nancy ann perrin who married thomas burton, son of james burton, sr, whose daughter agnes burton married james hudson, son of peter hudson, sr. again, the burtons are also shown to have been involved with sylvanus walker, jr there in lunenburg co, va and both sylvanus walker, jr and thomas burton also moved to laurens co, sc where they continued to be significantly involved with my harris family, etc, there. again, a lot more involved than this, but land my charles harris/ jane cannon owned in laurens co, sc on raborns creek, which bordered lydall allen, had belonged previously to sylvanus walker and had involved a suit with thomas burton. again, this was also joseph perrin's daughter who married james sullivan/ sullivan who also moved to laurens co, sc. i have not really gotten into, or again, but these connections re the sullivan/ sullivant family are also really involved, again, both there in this lunenburg co, va area as well as also on into laurens co, sc. in fact, speaking of joseph perrin and the sullivans/ sullivants, i have also found this info that joseph perrin became the guardian for samuel wharton. this is indicated to have been the same samuel wharton, who married maudeline sullivant and who was also in laurens co, sc and, again, involved there with the sullivans/ sullivants and other of these also of interest re our harris family, like mariah williams goodman, whose father daniel williams, ursula, had moved to granville co, nc via lunenburg co, va. again, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson, etc, were involved with the appraisal of daniel williams land in lunenburg co, va. as shown, per these laurens co, sc deeds, which i have cited re the walkers in laurens co, sc, samuel wharton is shown to have been involved with charles sullivant there. again, also, this george anderson was the son of james anderson/ margaret rodgers of wards fork/ creek of lunenburg/ charlotte co, va and margaret rodgers anderson was the sister of my john rodgers, sr/ esq, father of my frances rodgers harris, wife of my william harris, jr, who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc, son of my william harris, sr/ frances goode of lunenburg co, va. laurens co, sc deed book B, page 96, 1786, george anderson and wife, mary/ molly, to mariah goodman for 100 pds, 140 acres on both sides of norths creek bordered by james burnside, robert young, james cook, john milam, silvanus walker. witnesses: samuel wharton, charles sullivant. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8---------26910
again, hampton wade, son of robert wade, sr/ elizabeth, said to have been elizabeth hampton, witnessed the lunenburg co, va deed wherein in 1745 sylvanus walker sold land to isaac winston, jr of hanover co, va. again, per the info, hampton wade, who married jane ellis, was also sold land by samuel harris, who, again, was the same samuel harris also involved with william harris/ judith hudson and my william harris, sr/ frances goode early in lunenburg co, va and who were all early in cornelius cargill's district, per these early lunenburg co, va tithe lists, and the same samuel harris, who also had the patent with memucan hunt, who married mary wade, also daughter of robert wade, sr and sister of hampton wade. again, hampton wade was also paid by the estate of john wilborn and, again, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson were involved with the will and estate of john wilborn from 1757-1762 there in lunenburg co, va. again, besides the connections samuel harris; our edward harris, sr, as well as my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson had with robert wade, sr and his son, hampton wade and richard ellis, per these lunenburg co, va deeds and records i have cited, william harris, who is indicated to have been william harris/ judith hudson, witnessed the 1745 brunswick co, va deed wherein william irby sold land to andrew wade of goochland co, va. again, this was the same william irby, who lived in this same difficult creek area where robert wade, sr and peter hudson, sr lived. the info indicates that robert wade, sr and andrew wade, sr were related but i am not exactly sure how they were related. here also is this lunenburg co, va deed showing that john ornsby sold land to the same andrew wade, which bordered on tandy walker. lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 305, 1756, john ornsby of amelia co, va to andrew wade of lunenburg co, va for 100 pds, 500 acres of land in lunenburg and bounded by tandy walker, a new line made for james roberts. signed: john ornsby. no witnesses. here is the halifax co, va will for robert wade, sr from this rootsweb site: Entries: 6384 Updated: 2006-06-11 23:46:20 UTC (Sun) Contact: Bryan Buchanan Index | Descendancy | Register | Pedigree | Ahnentafel | Download GEDCOM | Add Post-em ID: I3186 Name: Robert WADE Surname: Wade Given Name: Robert Sex: M Birth: 20 Nov 1700 in , James City, Virginia Death: from 1 May 1767 to 19 Apr 1770 _UID: 07F1609C8B86CC48B4315D085E810F7ACB61 Note: **He made his will on 1 May 1767 in Anheim Parish, Halifax, Virginia and it was probated on 19 Apr 1770 in , Halifax, Virginia **The following from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~garykueber/wadejame/sources.htm#f46b William Gilbert Scroggins, File on James Wade (1665-1740), Halifax Co, VA, Will of Robert Wade, page 7-8., Garril L Kueber's files, unpublished, last updated August 21, 1987, Robert Wade, Sr. of Anheim Parish, Halifax County, Virginia, died after 01 May 1767, when he wrote his will, and before 19 April 1770 when it was proved. The heir-at-law William Wade was present when the will was proved and had no objection to it. (transcript, WADE WAID WAIDE.) The description of William Wade as heir-at-law indicates that he was the eldest son and legal heir under the law of primogeniture who had to agree to its terms. He probably was not included in the will because he already had received sufficient property from his father. The family of Robert Wade, Sr. of Halifax County, described in his will, were wife Elizabeth Wade; son Robert Wade, who was dead, leaving a widow named Ann and two sons, Hampton and Robert Wade; son John Wade; son Stephen, whose wife was named Susannah and who had a son, Robert Wade; son Charles Wade, who had a son named Robert Wade; daughter Mary Hunt; daughter Sarah Stokes; son Edward Wade, who had no children in 1767; an unnamed daughter, who married a man named Walker and left a son, Benjamin Walker; son Hampton Wade, whose wife was named Jean and who had a son named Robert Wade; and the heir at law William Wade. (Halifax County, Virginia, Will Book O, page 218, abstract, Shirley Wilcox, THE WADE QUARTERLY, Volume 7, Issue 4, March 1981.) By naming nephew Stephen Jones as a legatee, Robert Wade, Sr. indicated that either he had a sister married to a Jones or that his wife Elizabeth had a sister married to a Jones. Stephen Jones could not be the a son of a brother of Elizabeth Wade, whose maiden name was Hampton. , (hereafter cited as VA Halifax Will, Robert Wade). to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910
