    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] William Harris of Difficult Creek, Halifax Co.

    3. On Sep 15, 2008, at 12:55 PM, belva cauthen wrote: Who is the William Harris in Halifax VA in the same area as Difficult Creek in 1779? 1779 Jul 15 - Halifax Co., Va. - pg 228 - A deed from William Harris of Halifax, to Nathaniel Vasser of Amelia County for 245 pounds about 200 acres in Halifax and bounded by the lands of John Richman, JOHN STANLEY, Charles Stokes and said Harris. No Witnesses. Recorded Jul 15, 1779. > Belva, Various records in Halifax Co. and Patrick Co. prove that the William Harris in the Difficult Creek area in 1779 was the father of Elijah Harris, whose descendants have tested into Harris DNA Group 30. The first evidence that I have found of this William Harris in Halifax Co. is this: Halifax County, VA Deed Book 11 p. 154 19 nov 1778 from Thomas Tunks of H to William Harris of Amelia county, for 350 £, 400 acres in H, and bounded by William Bolling’s Path. Signed Thos. Tunks. Wit John Coleman, Abram Legrand, Mordecai Rucker Recorded 19 nov 1778 William Harris bought more land in the Difficult Creek area over the next few years, and in addition to selling land to Nathaniel Vasser, he also sold land to a "John Harris of Amelia County" and to a James Harris. In addition to this William Harris in the vicinity of Difficult Creek (North District), the Halifax Co. Personal Property Tax Lists and other records also show another William Harris in the South District in the vicinity of Polecat Creek, Mirey Creek and Tobey Creek. I have followed the trail of this William Harris back to Amelia County, but have been unable to go further. The facts that he lived until @1815 and that he had a son born about 1768 leads me to estimate his DoB as about 1724/1748. A William Harris owned land in Amelia Co. on Deep Creek/Winningham Branch from the 1730s; he apparently had a son William, who died 1779. The Amelia Co. tithes lists and various deeds show that there was a William Harris in Amelia Co. in the vicinity of Sandy Creek beginning in the 1750s through 1778. There are also Amelia Co. records showing a John Harris in this area. Deep Creek is in the southeastern part of present-day Amelia Co., whereas Sandy Creek is in the northwestern part of the county, between Flatt Creek and the Appomattox River near the county line with Prince Edward Co. and Cumberland Co. William Harris of Sandy Creek was associated there with the Hendrick and Vasser families in this area of Sandy Creek as shown by the following records: Amelia Co, VA Deed Book 7:351 22 May 1760 Deed: Benjamin Hurt and Titus Hurt, of Caroline County, to Obediah Hendrick, of Amelia County, for £40, 304 acres in Amelia County, adjoining Abraham Vasser, a branch, Henry Isbell, and Morris... /s/ Benjamin Hurt, Titus Hurt. Wit: James Hendrick, William Harris, Elizabeth Hendrick, Hans Hendrick. Rec 27 nov 1760 Amelia Co DB8: 122 Obediah Hendrick of Raleigh Parish Amelia co. to Zachariah Hendrick of same 28 apr 1763 250£ 504a in Amelia on heads of branches of Sandy Creek & Flat Creek wit none Belva also stated: per the info pat mason harris/ pat clare posted previously, this may have been pat seaver's william harris/ elizabeth (hendrick), who witnessed this amelia co, va deed re benjamin hurt/ titus hurt of caroline co, va to obadiah hendrick. There are several Halifax Co. records that indicate that the wife of William Harris of Difficult Creek was named Elizabeth, and there are Amelia Co. records that show that the William Harris of Sandy Creek lived near and associated with the Hendricks family. The 1777 Amelia Co. will of Benjamin Hendrick named a son Bernard Hendrick. (The same will named a Susanna Harris, but no relationship was stated in the McConnaughey's abstract.) William and Elizabeth Harris of Difficult Creek had a son named Barnard/Bernard/Barnet. That Barnard Harris was one of the appraisers of the estate and inventory of an Obediah Harris who died 1814 in Patrick Co. However, I do not know of any proof that the William Harris of Sandy Creek married Elizabeth Hendrick. Although some members of the Amelia Co. Hendrick family did move to Halifax Co, they moved to the South District, where they lived near the William Harris of Polecat, Tobey, and Mirey Creeks. If anyone knows of any information that supports the speculation that Elizabeth Hendrick was the wife of William Harris of Difficult Creek, please post it here. I have cited only a few of the more pertinent records from those I have collected. If anyone wants a more complete citation, I will be happy to share them. Pat Seaver

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris of Wynns Cr Halifax Co,VA

    3. Some months ago, I posted a record found in Roger C. Dodson’s Property Lines from an Old Survey Book Halifax County, Virginia 1741 to 1901 VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society 1987 regarding 820 acres on Wynn’s Creek and Powells Branch surveyed by Sherwood Walton for William Harris, Sr. & Jr 19 february 1750. At the time, it was assumed that the date was in error and that the record referred to the 820 acres patented by William Harris 15 dec 1758. I have since viewed the microfilm of the Index to Halifax County Deeds and found that the index book also has the 1750 date with the names William Harris, Sr. and William Harris, Jr., both referenced to Survey Book 1 (FHL US/CAN Film 31940 Survey Book v. 1 1751-1901, which includes surveys done ca. 1746-1747 when Halifax was part of Lunenburg Co.) Since that time, I have found more records that seem to suggest that a William Harris acquired more than one parcel of land in the vicinity of Wynns Creek. Following are the relevant records: p. 24 2 oct 1746 Surv.d S.W. Thomas Finny enters 400 acres of land on the Head Branches of the Bear Br. transferr’d to Wm. Signed Michael Mackey,Susannah (X her mar) Mackey Wit: Anthony Irby, Sarah Irby, John Irby, Mary Irby. Rec. 21 jun 1770 Observations: I had previously questioned how it was possible for Frances Harris to relinquish her dower rights 4 December 1758, when William did not sell the land to John Camp until 7 august 1759. These records show that in 1746 Thomas Finny patented two parcels of 400 acres each on branches of Wynns Creek and transferred them to William Harris. Further, the 1756 Robert Wooding mortgage indicates that he had purchased 400 acres on Wynns Creek from William Harriss. Therefore, the land that William Harris was selling in 1759 may not have been the land that he patented in 1758. The land that Frances Harris released in 1758 could have been land that William had acquired from Thomas Finny. This record is particularly interesting: Halifax Co, VA Plea Book No. 3 December court 1759 (3) p. 2 A deed from William Harris to John Jeffris was proved by the witnesses thereto and ordered recorded As far as I know, the deed from William Harris to John Jeffris is not found in Halifax County records. Given that it was ordered to be recorded at the December Court of 1759, we would expect to find this deed either in Deed Book 1 or Deed Book 2. Marian Dodson Chiarito notes that pages 1-6 and 473-476 are missing and pages 477 and 478 are partly missing from Deed Book 1. What we do see is that John Jeffries sells 420 acres on Bear Branch (of Wynns Creek) to John Camp in 1762. A John Jeffries was an appraiser in 1757 with John Camp of the estate of John Wilbourn; William Harris was an executor of Wilbourn’s will. William Harris sold 400 acres in 1764 and 420 acres in 1765 to John Camp, and those deeds specifically designate the land as part of the 1758 patent. As late as 1769, there is a reference to land on Wynns Creek bounded by Harris. These records do not explain the 1750 record which refers to a William Harris, Sr. and a William Harris, Jr. However, the 1756 Wooding mortgage does prove that a William Harris had land on Wynns Creek prior to his patent of 820 acres in 1759. The land that Wooding mortgaged may have been some of the land included in the 1750 survey or it may have been some of the land patented by Thomas Finny in 1746 and subsequently transferred to William Harris. Benjamin Hendrick and Thomas Osborne were named executors.   again, hans and margaret wynne hendrick were definitely also associated with the same families in laurens co, sc as my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his brother-in-law, our patrick cunningham/ ann harris.    here are some other of these laurens co, sc deeds, which, again, connect hans and margaret wynn hendrick, with our patrick cunningham/ ann harris and with my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and/ or the same individuals in laurens co, sc.   Laurens Deed Book A, page 161, 1785,  david dickson of tyger river spartanburg co to patrick cunningham for 530 pds, 150 acres on the saluda and reedy river, b on john willard, hans hendrick, former property of hugh brown.  wit:  isaac mitchell; john elmore; robert brown; sarah cunningham.     laurens co, sc deed book C, page 215, 1790 john atkins of moore co, nc and wife margaret to george morgan for 100 pds, 179 acres part of 250 acre grant in 1768 to john willard on reedy river then bordered on john brown; john cargill; hance hendrick. wit:  lewis graves; middleton prater; james morgan.  george anderson, j. p.   laurens deed book E, page 438, 1774/ 1795, john willard and wife, martha, of 96th dist, sc to joseph atkins for 10 shillings 179 acres, part of 250 acre grant in 1768 on both sides of reedy river bordered on john brown; john cargill; hans hendrick. wit:  john cobb; william burgess; patrick cunningham. patrick cunningham, j.p.   this john willard, per the info, was the son-in-law of hans and margaret wynne hendrick.   as indicated, hans hendrick's land also bordered on john cargill.  this was john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley also of lunenburg/ halifax co, va, son of cornelius cargill of lunenburg co, va.   it was john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley's son cornelius cargill, who paid the tax/ memorial for my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1771, 150 acre grant there in laurens co, sc.  also, their son, thomas cargill was one of the purchasers at my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale.   laurens deed book F, page 522, micajah hendrick to william winn hendrick for 50 pds, 300 acres on both sides of reedy river, orig grant to hans hendrick in 1774 and to micajah hendrick lawful heir.  wit:  john wait; elijah burgess; jacob niswanger.  lewis graves, j.p.    william wynne hendrick, son of hans and margaret wynne hendrick,  married a daughter of joel burgess.  elijah burgess was the son of joel burgess.    john wait married into the family of james and margaret rodgers anderson, who also moved from lunenburg/ charlotte co, va to laurens co, sc and margaret rodgers anderson was the sister of my john rodgers, esq, father of my frances rodgers harris.   hans hendrick, III, died intestate in this 96th dist/ laurens co, sc area but this is the will for his wife, margaret wynne hendrick:     Laurens Co, SC will book A-1, page 158, 1797, will of margaret hendrick. legatees:  2 sons:  micajah and william winn hendrick; 6 daus:  fanny turner; peggy forgy; rachel hendrick; mary burgess; elizabeth wright; martha willard. executor, friend, lewis graves. wit:  john middleton; jacob clemons; elizabeth sims.   this lewis graves, executor of margaret wynn hendrick's laurens co, sc will, was also one of the witnesses to patrick cunningham/ ann harris' 1796 laurens co, sc will along with memucan walker and sarah (harris?) cargill clary.     john wait;  john middleton; and sylvanus walker, jr,  were the appraisers of my william harris, jr's estate sale in 1800 in laurens co, sc.    john middleton also married into the family of james and margaret rodgers anderson, who was the sister of my john rodgers, esq, father of my frances rodgers harris.   again, they were the children of my andrew rodgers, sr, who died in 1755 in lunenburg, now charlotte co, va.   these, then, are/ were some very involved connections re hans hendrick of amelia co, va and his son hans hendrick/ margaret wynne with my harris and goode family, etc, not only there in this lunenburg/ amelia cos, va area, which also included the osbornes and this william harris/ martha osborne, but also on into laurens co, sc.   again, it continues to be a puzzle and a challenge to try and sort this all our re our harris families, and especially when it comes to all our william harrises, but, hopefully, we will continue to learn more and to figure this all out at some point.     belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Claiborne Harris Patrick Co, VA>Wilson Co, TN
    2. Patricia Seaver
    3. Back in December of 2004 Ira Harris posted in three parts on Harris- Hunters a list of men named Claiborne Harris. Ira invited others to submit additional information on these men. I would like to add another Claiborne Harris to the list, and also suggest a revision to the following entry from Part II: 1. Claiborne Harris, born Bef. 1793; died Aft. 1814 Wife, Elizabeth Blanks. s/o Sherrod Harris. gr s/o William & Mary ( ) Harris Based on my own research, that of Sandy Hart, Leon Harris, Bev Harris and Elaine Campbell, I believe that there was another man named Claiborne Harris living in Patrick Co. at the same time, and one of his descendants has recently tested into the Harris DNA Group 30. The second Claiborne Harris was the son of Elijah and Nancy (Lee) Harris, who married in Halifax Co, VA 27 jan 1794. Patrick Co., VA records show that this Elijah Harris was the son of William and Elizabeth (LNU) Harris, who moved to the Russells Creek area of Patrick Co. about 1803, with another son, Barnard Harris. Elijah and Nancy followed about 1806. I descend from Elijah and Nancy’s daughter, Martha/Patsy Harris, who married Allen Morefield in Patrick Co. in 1825. Allen Morefield’s sister, Nancy, married Joseph Harris 1824 in Patrick Co.; two descendants of Joseph and Nancy (Morefield) Harris have also tested into Harris DNA Group 30. In order to avoid confusion later, I should note that there were three Elijah Harrises in Patrick Co. during this time period, one of whom had a son named Claiborne and one of whom had a brother named Claiborne: Elijah, s/o William Harris of Russells Creek Elijah, s/o Sherod Little Dan River Elijah, s/o Samuel Harris of Smith River (DNA Group 10) Elijah, s/o Samuel and Martha (Hylton/Helton) Harris married Lavinia Terry in Patrick Co. 3 oct 1816. Samuel died about 1828, leaving a son, Samuel. Claiborne Harris, s/o Sherod, bonded his sister Charlotte’s 1805 Patrick Co. marriage to Edward Parmer (Palmer). That, and his appearance on the 1807 Patrick Co. Personal Property Tax List (PPTL), indicate that he was born before 1790 and probably before 1783. Claiborne Harris, s/o Elijah and Nancy (Lee) Harris, was age 52 in 1850, an age that is consistent with other census records. In 1820 there were two entries for Claiborne Harriss on the Patrick Co. PPTL, which I first took to be an enumerator error. There was only one Claiborne Harriss on the 1820 Patrick Co, VA census, but his age was not consistent with the age of Claiborne Harris who had bonded an 1805 marriage and appeared on the PPTL as early as 1807: 1820 Patrick Co. VA census p. 115 1 male age 16-26 1 female age 16-26 The next household was Elijah Harriss, over age 45. Of the two entries for Claiborne Harriss on the 1820 Patrick Co, PPTL, one was enumerated on 7 february, the same date as Elijah Harriss and the other was enumerated on 3 april, the same date as Sarah Harriss. About 1827 or 1828, Elijah Harris’s brother, Barnard, died in Patrick County. At about the same time, Elijah and Nancy Harris sold their land on Russells Creek. By 1830, Elijah Harris of Russells Creek, Patrick Co., VA was living in Wilson County, TN, and Claib Harris was in neighboring Rutherford Co, TN, age 30-40. (There was also an Eli Harris in Wilson Co., TN.) In 1830 there was a Claiborn Harris enumerated in Patrick Co. age 40-50, which, of course, does not match the Claiborne Harriss who was there in 1820. A Claiborn(e) Harriss also appeared on the Patrick Co. PPTL in 1830, 1831 and 1832 (I have transcribed the Patrick Co, VA PPTL only through 1835). I found no Claiborne Harris on the Patrick Co. PPTL 1822-1829. It is known that Claiborne’s younger sister, Martha/Patsy, married Thomas Beasley in Surry County, NC in 1821 (that this was Sherod’s daughter is proved by Martha/Patsy’s KY death record, which names her parents as Sherad and Sarah Harris). Further, Sherod Harris had lived on Harris Creek of the Little Dan River, not far from the Surry Co, NC border. Perhaps Claiborne lived in Surry Co. 1821-1829. In 1840 Claiborne Harris had moved from Rutherford Co, TN to Wilson Co, TN. In 1841 Elijah Harris left his will in Wilson Co. (Elaine Campbell found this will in loose documents in the court house), naming his wife Nancy and his son Claiborne and referring to other children, but he did not name them. In 1850 Claiborne Harris age 52, born VA was living in Wilson Co. TN with wife Mary and children Parthena, James, Martha, Nancy, and Mary. Claiborne Harris married Mary Summers 1835 in Rutherford Co, TN, but the 1830 Rutherford Co. household of Claiborne Harris included a male under age 5, a male age 5-10, a male age 30-40, a female age 10-15 and a female age 30-40. Thus, Claiborne Harris, s/o Elijah, had been married at least by 1820. It has been assumed that the Claiborne Harris who married Elizabeth Blanks in Patrick Co. in 1819 was the son of Sherod Harris. However, when that assumption was made, it was not known that there was another Claiborne Harris living in Patrick Co. in 1819. Given the fact that he was old enough to bond his sister’s marriage in 1805, Sherod’s son Claiborne would have been in his mid to late 30s by 1819. That certainly does not rule out the possibility that it was Sherod’s son who married Elizabeth Blanks, but as far as I know, it is not proved, either. We have several signatures of the Elijah Harris who married Nancy Lee in Halifax Co, VA in 1794: his own marriage record, the marriage record of his daughter Martha to Allen Morefield 1825 Patrick Co., an 1822 petition that he and son Barnard signed in Patrick Co. and his 1841 Wilson Co, TN will. Thompson Blanks of Rockingham Co, NC married Polly Harris in 1822 in Patrick Co., bonded by Elijah Harris. The signature of Elijah Harris on that bond does not match the other signatures just cited. The assumption has been that the Elijah who bonded that marriage was Sherod’s son, Elijah. And it may have been. However, as noted above, there were 3 Elijah Harrises in Patrick Co. in 1822. It should also be noted that although there were two Elijah Harrisses enumerated on the Patrick Co. PPTL 1817-1819, there were never 3 enumerated in any given year, and there was only one 1807-1816 and 1820-1827, and 1831. Since Elijah Harris of Russells Creek was in Wilson Co. by 1830 and Elijah Harris of Smith River had died before 1828, the Elijah Harris enumerated in 1831 on the same date as Claiborne Harris and was very likely the son of Sherod. Since Sherod’s 1814 will named his son Elijah as one of his younger children, it is possible that he did not become head of household until 1831, but given that Sherod’s son Claiborne does not appear to have been in Patrick Co. between 1821 and 1829, it is also possible that Elijah was also living elsewhere. In light of this data, I believe that we have to at least consider the possibility that the Claiborne Harris who married Elizabeth Blanks in 1819 Patrick Co, VA may have been Elijah and Nancy (Lee)’s son and not Sherod’s son. Elaine Campbell has found several documents in Wilson Co, TN that show Elijah and Claiborne Harris interacting there with members of a Blanks family. Further research is clearly needed. Surry Co, NC would probably be a good place to start that research, given that Sherod’s daughter, Martha/Patsy, married there and Sherod lived fairly close to Surry Co. As stated above, William, Elijah, and Barnard Harris came to Russells Creek, Patrick Co. in the very early 1800s from Halifax Co., VA, where they had lived on or in the vicinity of Difficult Creek. The deed of this William’s first purchase in Halifax Co. in 1778 refers to him as “William Harris of Amelia Co.” There was a William Harris in the Sandy Creek/Stocks Creek area of Amelia Co. (between Flatt Creek and the Appomattox River--not close to Deep Creek) in the years leading up to the appearance of this William Harris in the Northern District of Halifax Co. He was closely associated with the Hendricks and Vasser family in Amelia Co. In Halifax Co. he was closely associated with the Vasser and the Prindle/Pringle families, as well as a John Harris, James Harris and the Claiborne Harris who married Sally Hudson 1789 Charlotte Co. There was also a William Harris in the South District of Halifax Co., in the vicinity of Polecat Creek, Tobey Creek and Mirey Creek. I have seen no evidence that these two Harris families associated with one another. Some of the Hendricks of Amelia Co./Sandy Creek area moved to the Polecat Creek area of Halifax Co. I would appreciate any information or suggestions for research paths for this William Harris of Amelia Co. Pat Seaver (5th great-granddaughter of William Harris of Amelia/Halifax/Patrick)

    2. I have not time at this time to read your longish e-mails, and, furthermore, I have delved into Lunenburg Co. deeds sometime ago, searching for another family, seemingly not connected to your Harris. If you believe there is a connection to Jeremiah Glenn, you might do some searches in Louisa Co., VA books and films. Here is the website of an author who had done a lots of excerpts of early Louisa Co. records plus a couple of books on early and later Hanover Co., where most of the records have burned. One of the mistakes we make in genealogy is researching only one area/county in Virginia, in particular. _http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/_ (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/) When studying Louisa Co. you also have to take a look at Goochland Co. records and later those of Albemarle Co. records. 3. the following charlotte co, va deed shows that land my mackerness goode, sr sold to james watkins bounded  his brother william goode and peter hamblin/ hamlin.   in fact, this is the charlotte co, va deed wherein my mackerness goode, sr, sold his land there in charlotte co, va ere his moving to laurens co, sc.   i have a follow-up to this charlotte co, va deed stating that land this james watkins later sold to mackerness goode, who was the son of william goode, had belonged to mackerness goode, the elder, who was now in south carolina.   these two deeds re my mackerness goode, sr, were sent to me years ago and when i was focusing on our families in laurens co, sc.  her husband was connected somehow to my goode family.  again, my paper files are a mess and i  still have only been able to find a portion of this  later deed, which i will also cite.   the following charlotte co, va deed also shows that in 1772 james watkins also sold land to peter hamblin, which was witnessed by m. goode and phillip jones.     this m./ mackerness goode, who witnessed this 1772 charlotte co, va deed was the son of william goode, brother of my mackerness goode, sr.   again, my mackerness goode, sr; his brother, william goode, etc were the sons of our samuel goode/ martha jones of henrico co, va and she was the daughter of phillip jones of henrico co, va and this was her brother phillip jones, jr, who had also moved to lunenburg co, va and who continued to be involved with my goode family there.   charlotte co, va deed book 3, page 47, 1772, james watkins of charlotte co, va to peter hamlin of same for 22 pds, 114 acres in charlotte co, va on the branches of sandy creek and bounded by stokes line on kings road, elam, hamlin's own line. signed:  james watkins.  witnesses: m. goode; phillip jones, his mark.   my mackerness goode, sr also signed with a mark.  again,  this m. goode, who witnessed this deed was the son of william goode, brother of my mackerness goode, sr.   again, here are the following deeds re my mackerness goode, sr, which someone sent to me years earlier.  she did not cite herself exactly which deed books they were in and i have not tried to find them.   although obviously interested in my goode family,  my focus has been more on my harris family, which has, indeed, been a challenge.   1766 Aug 4, Mackerness Goode of Cornwall Parrish, Charlotte co, VA to James Watkins of ? 3. i did not finish and would like to continue to also talk about these connections that connect this other samuel harris, wife, ann, with the claibornes; gideon moon; lodowick farmer, etc, and what these connections entail and also indicate.   again, like col/ rev samuel harris/ lucy camp, i cannot identify this samuel harris or his father but connections, again, like rev samuel harris, would indicate that he may have been related to my william harris, sr/ frances goode; william harris/ judith hudson; edward harris, sr, who were also there in this same lunenburg co, va area.   again, the two deeds which pat cited re this samuel harris, wife, ann, were the only two deeds i had had for him in the lunenburg co, va deeds book but, given, his association with the claibornes, etc, he is shown to have been the same samuel harris, wife, ann, who was in 1764 in henry blagrave's district per these lunenburg co, va tithe lists, etc.   again, this was henry blagrave's daughter anna blagrave, who married jeremiah glenn.  jeremiah glenn witnessed the 1765 mecklenburg co, va deed wherein my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold land to james hall.   again,  jeremiah glenn/ anna blagrave also moved to laurens co, sc where the laurens co, sc deeds show that my charles harris was involved there with their son william glenn.   the following deed, which i posted re the claibornes, which also involve them with this samuel harris, etc, shows that  daniel claiborne sold land to thomas hamblin, jr.   these lunenburg co, va deeds show that thomas hamblin, jr was related to and probably a brother of peter hamlin/ hamblin and they connect both peter hamblin and thomas hamblin, jr with both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my goode family.   Deed Book VII:363 7 Sep 1762. Daniel CLAIBORNE to Thomas HAMBLIN Jr. in consideration of a mare and a year old colts and 1, 400 acres patented to CLAIBORNE 10 Aug 1759 bounded by Daniel MITCHELL. Witness: Everard DOWSING, Thos ERSKINE, Wm LEATON. here, again, is the lunenburg co, va deed wherein peter hamlin/ hamblin and benjamin ragsdale witnessed the 1761 lunenburg co, va deed re my william harris, sr/ frances goode to john smith.   then, the following l757 lunenburg co, va deed connects both peter hamblin and thomas hamblin, jr with my mackerness goode, sr and his brother william goode and also with the elams.   again, per the info, the elams there in lunenburg co, va, were the sons of john elam/ martha goode, sister of my mackerness goode, sr and his brother, william goode, children of our samuel goode/ martha jones of henrico co, va.   again, i cannot confirm this re the elams, but these lunenburg co, va deeds definitely show that the elams were  significantly involved there with my goode family.   in fact, these lunenburg co, va deeds show that william harris/ judith hudson sold land to joel elam, which was witnessed also by william goode, brother of my  mackerness goode, sr.   lunenburg co, va deed book 5, page 122, 1758, william harriss of lunenburg to joel elam of same for 21 pds, 71 acres on the upperside of the middle bluestone creek, bounded by trees. signed:  william harris.  witnesses:  william goode, augustine rowland, hugh mc vey.  judith, wife of william harris, relinquised her right of dower.   again, peter hamblin and thomas hamblin, jr are shown to have been involved with both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my goode family.   lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 528, 1761, william harris of lunenburg to john smith of amelia co, va for 200 pds, 400 acres on both sides of the middle fork of the bluestone creek and bounded by new lines.  signed:  william harriss.  witnesses:  abram crowder, peter hamlin, his mark, benjamin ragsdale.  frances, wife of william harris, relinquished her right of dower.   also this deed which connects both peter hamblin/ hamlin and thomas hamblin with my mackerness goode, sr; his brother william goode; and the elams.   lunenburg co, va deed book 5, page 48, 1757, edward elam of lunenburg co, va to william elam of same for 20 pds, 200 acres in lunenburg on the west or upper side of bluestone creek, being part of a larger patent to william goode and bounded by mackerness goode's line and the said william goode's patent line.  signed:  edward elam, his mark.  witnesses:  w. goode; peter (P) hamblin, his mark; thomas (T) hamblin, jr, his mark.    to be continued:   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910

    3. i also have to point out again or reiterate, and as part of these multi-involved, multi-layered connections that i keep talking about, that the same memucan hunt, who had the patent with samuel harris in this same bluestone creek area of lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va where both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson lived and the same memucan hunt still, like rev samuel harris, associated with this same grassy creek area of granville co, nc, was the same memucan hunt who sylvanus walker, jr chose as his guardian.   again, this was the same sylvanus walker, son of tandy walker/ judith langford of lunenburg co, va who was called sylvanus walker, jr there, who also moved to laurens co, sc and who became sylvanus walker, sr there.   again, it was this sylvanus walker, sr's son, sylvanus walker, jr in laurens co, sc who was one of the appraisers of my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale and it was also sylvanus walker, sr's son memucan walker, named for memucan hunt, who witnessed our patrick cunningham/ ann harris' 1796 laurens co, sc will.   here again is the info where sylvanus walker chose memucan hunt as his guardian.     to me these are important and very relevant connections and, once again, these connections are also a lot more involved.   1754, Feb Court. Silvanus Walker orphan of Tandy Walker, dec'd, came into court and (being of lawful age for that purpose) made choice of Memucan Hunt to be his guardian who is accordingly appointed (he giving security) whereupon he together with Thomas Anderson his security, entered into & acknowledge their bond and that purpose. 3. again, samuel harris, who had this patent in lunenburg co, va with memucan hunt, is the same samuel harris, who became col samuel harris/ rev samuel harris.   again, both memucan hunt and rev samuel harris are shown to have also both been involved with this same grassy creek area of mecklenburg co, va/ granville co, nc with connections re the knight family also of lunenburg/ granville co, nc who are indicated to have also been the same knight family also associated with richard harris/ priscilla holmes also there in granville co, nc.   so, again, when this history of the grassy creek baptist church says that rev samuel harris was the brother of this richard harris and charles harris, who were members of the grassy creek,  just which richard harris and charles harris does this refer to?   col samuel harris/ rev samuel harris stated that he was born in 1724 near the pamunkey river in hanover co, va.   this is indicated to have been the same samuel harris, who william harris/ judith hudson sold the island/ plantation to in 1748 in lunenburg co, va, which was witnessed by john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley.   again, samuel harris continued to be very involved with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley in this halifax cos, va area and by 1770 john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley had also moved to laurens co, sc where their cargill family continued to be very involved with my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and my mackerness goode, sr's sons, our mackerness goode, jr and samuel goode, per info i have posted in the past.    again, these connections are just more involved period.   samuel harris, who, as stated, became a noted early baptist mininister preached at the grassy creek baptist church in granville co, nc, which, as shown, per the info below, was about two miles from lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va.   again, as shown, memucan hunt, who had been involved with samuel harris in lunenburg co, va, had also moved to this same grassy creek area of granville co, nc, which was in close proximity to mecklenburg co, va.   this is info from this history of the grassy creek baptist church:   The Origin of Grassy Creek Baptist Church, with some Interesting Incidents connected with its Early History Some of the first permanent settlements effected in Granville county, North Carolina, were along the Northern border on Grassy Creek, near the Virginia line. It appears that a considerable number of the early colonists in this region were Baptists, or Baptists in sentiment. They soon began to hold meetings and at length built a house [a large frame building] for divine worship, and named it Grassy Creek, after the water course -- a tributary of the Roanoke River -- on which it was located. The Meeting House is situated in the northern part of Granville, sixteen miles from Oxford, the county seat, and some two miles from the line of Mecklenburg county in Virginia. the info goes one to say that two of the members richard harris and charles harris of the grassy creek baptist church were brothers of col/ rev samuel harris.   so, which richard harris and which charles harris of granville co, nc were the brothers of col/ rev samuel harris and who was their father in hanover co, va?   " Rev. Samuel Harris, usually called Col Harris, a man of wealth, ability and high social position, who resided in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, not far from the land of Birch Creek (commonly called Kentuck) Baptist meeting-house, some sixty miles from this place, (Grassy Creek) entered the ministry in 1759, but owing to some peculiar views which he entertained respecting ordination, he refused to be set apart to the ministerial office till 1769.    In 1765, Mr. Harris went down into Orange and Spottsylvania counties, Virginia, on a preaching excursion. His labors were greatly blessed in awakening attention to the subject of religion, and in leading precious souls to Christ. "He continued many days, preaching from place to place, attended by great crowds, and followed throughout his meetings by several person who had been either lately converted, or seriously awakened under the ministry of others, and also by many who had been alarmed by his own labors.   "When Mr. Harris left them he advised some in whom he discovered talents to commence the exercise of their gifts, and to hold meetings among themselves. They took his advise and began to hold meetings every Sabbath, and almost every night in the week, taking a tobacco house for their meeting house. After proceeding in this way for some time, they resolved to send for Mr. Harris, in order to procure his services, to preach and baptize now converts.   Sometime in the year 1766, Elijah Craig and two others traveled to Mr. Harris' house, but they found to their surprise that he had not been ordained to the administration of ordinances. To remedy this inconvenience, he carried them about sixty miles into North Carolina to Elder James Reed, by whom he (Mr. Craig) was ordained" (see Benedict's History of the Baptists, p. 648)   >From the best information that I have been able to obtain in regard to this affair, referred to above, it appears that Mr. Harris conducted this party that came from Spottsylvania county, Virginia, to Grassy Creek, where they were received by experience and baptism into the fellowship of the church. Mr. Craig, one of the party, had, from the time of his conversion, although unapprised and without church relations, been exercising his gifts in exhortation, and in proclaiming to his fellow men the glad tidings of salvation. He was not only baptized, but was also, at the same time, by the authority of this church, solemnly and publicly set apart to the full work of the gospel ministry, by Elders James Reed and (supposed to be) Dutton Lane.    Mr. Reed, the pastor of this church, and some of its members with Mr. Harris, by urgent solicitations, accompanied these brethren back, to receive and baptize converts, and establish a branch of this church in Spottsylvania county, Va.      By the way, two of the most prominent and influential members of this church at that time were brothers of Col. Harris -- Richard and Charles Harris. The former was an elder or deacon, and the latter its clerk for many years; -- and as they were men of means and standing, it is probable that one or both of them were in the delegation.      And after making the necessary preparations, they set out on their journey of nearly two hundred miles. Accordingly, in due time, they reached the place of destination, and commenced their labors with remarkable success. Elder Reed baptized nineteen on the first day of his arrival, and more on the day following. Prosperity smiled upon them, and God so abundantly blessed their efforts in building up the Redeemer's cause, that on the 20th of November, 1767, the brethren in Spottsylvania were regularly constituted into a Baptist church, which was called Upper Spottsylvania, but now Craig's church, which has stood until the present time, and has become the mother of many churches. Hunt, John Wade, William Knight. was this, then, the same jonathan knight, who was associated with memucan hunt who was also mentioned in the will of richard harris/ priscilla holmes?   as i have talked about previously, these connections re richard harris/ priscilla holmes and the lunenburg co, va families are more relevantly involved as well.    this was the same satterwhite family, re richard harris to michael satterwhite, who were not only there in lunenburg co, va and associated, again, with the same individuals and families of interest re my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson, but this was the same satterwhite family of granville co, va re bartlett satterwhite and my mackerness goode, sr's son samuel goode, son-in-laws of joseph davenport who moved from granville co, nc to newberry co, sc.    the satterwhites also moved to laurens/ newberry cos, sc and, again, the connections are also more involved with the satterwhites there as well.  again, the michael mckie and daniel mckie family i have talked about and the relevance of their connections, were also very involved with the satterwhites in newberry co, sc   on and on there are these connections that indicate to me that, like samuel harris/ lucy camp, that, at least,  some of this harris family in granville co, nc like richard harris/ priscilla holmes, may have been part of our captain thomas harris/ harris dna group 8 harris line and family.   again, in order to totally solve these issues of kinship, we really need to find harris descendants to participate in the harris dna project but, sorry to say, that does not seem to be proving to be an easy task at this point.   again, my question for now is:    when this grassy creek baptist history says that richard harris and charles harris were the brothers of col/ rev samuel harris, which richard harris and charles harris does this  history refer to and who were members of this grassy creek baptist church there in granville co, nc?     here are granville co, nc deeds, etc, for richard harris/ priscilla holmes.   Jun. 4, 1755 - Richard Harris and wife Priscilla to John Norwood. 3. yes, and i am very interested in this grassy creek area of mecklenburg co, va and granville co, nc  re rev samuel harris/ lucy camp and memucan hunt.   again, samuel harris and memucan hunt had a 1757 patent there in lunenburg co, va in this same bluestone creek area where both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson lived, which, again, was adjacent either my mackerness goode, sr or his brother william goode and also john wilborn and, again, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris, sr/ frances goode were involved with the will and estate of john wilborn there in lunenburg co, va.   as shown, land my william harris, sr/ frances goode sold to roger atkinson. which had belonged to john wilborn was in this very same bluestone creek area re this patent for samuel harris and memucan hunt.   this, again, is the same samuel harris, who, like my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson, etc, were early in cornelius cargill's district, which became halifax co, ca and, again, samuel harris, as shown, continued to be very involved there with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley, who by 1770 had also moved to laurens co, sc where their cargill family continued to be significantly involved with my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and my mackerness goode, sr's sons, our mackerness goode, jr and samuel goode.   again, it is this same samuel harris, who became col samuel harris and, then, the noted baptist minister, rev samuel harris/ lucy camp, who, died in 1799 in pittsylvania co, va.   memucan hunt, who married mary wade, daughter of robert wade, sr, who, again, was the same robert wade, sr and andrew wade, sr family both involved with samuel harris; my william harris, sr/ frances goode; william harris/ judith hudson; and edward harris, sr, per the info i have cited recently and previously, moved to granville co, nc and lived in this same grassy creek area, which e.w. refers to.   samuel harris preached in this same area at this grassy creek baptist church.  again, samuel harris told the noted baptist historian that he was born near the pamunkey river in 1724 in hanover co, va.   the history of this grassy creek baptist church says that this richard harris and charles harris, who were long time members of this grassy creek baptist church, were the brothers of rev samuel harris/ lucy camp.   so, which charles harris and richard harris is this info referring to and who was the father of this col/ rev samuel harris/ lucy camp and this richard harris/ charles harris of granville co, nc???     here is the info showing that memucan hunt was in this grassy creek area of granville co, nc and associates him there with this knight  family.     this is also indicated to be the same knight family associated with richard harris/ priscilla holmes, per granville co, nc deeds i will also cite.   From: "Carolyn M. Joseph Woodson the elder, and being sensible that my deceased father did always intend his real estate should after his death descend to his son Joseph  Woodson all which appears manifest to me by his bequeathing to him a very small portion of his other estate and that the will is defective in that respect through default in the writer and not from any intention in him, doth grant unto the sd Joseph Woodson, son & heir of Joseph Woodson, decd. 325 a.  of land, more or less, in the county of Goochland.  Dated Oct 8, 1812. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Predecessor Counties of Lunenburg Co., VA
    2. Lunenburg Co., Virginia, where Belva has centered much of her research, was formed in 1745 from Brunswick County. Brunswick Co. in turn was formed Formed in 1720 from Prince George County. Parts of Surry and Isle of Wight counties were added later. Perhaps more research for Harrises and their colleagues should be concentrated in the above named counties. But also in the counties formed from Lunenburg Co., such as Mecklenburg Co., and even Granville Co. NC. A distant cousin pointed out to me that Grassey Creek was not only in Virginia (Mecklenburg Co.) but also in Granville Co., NC. This occurred when I noted a daughter and an aunt of some of our colonial ancestors was *wheeling and dealing* as a widow, in land along Grassey Creek in Mecklenburg Co. Her son, to whom she willed a piece of property in Mecklenburg, is found in records in both Granville Co. and in Mecklenburg Co. He died testate in the latter county, and the probate records are rather numerous. Some pointers I have received from skilled professionals: 1) Note the associates of your families - which Belva has done quite well. (These were probably in-laws, or might soon be.) 2. Note the watercourses on which their land was held. Check out all the neighbors, which you can generally get from the land recods. (See 1 above) 3. If researching in Virginia, research in all the counties. The counties kept dividing, and, furthermore, with so many burnt counties in Virginia, one might stumble on an ancestor or a collateral in another county. Tobacco wore out the land, historians tell us, and new land was desirable. Caveat: Do NOT assume that persons of the same name are the same person, and may not even be related. This is especially so with families with common surnames, and I have plenty of those. Researching in Virginia is challenging, to say the least. Beginning with the land patents which are online at .http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm is a good beginning. But, if available to you, also check the published lists in the eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers. The oldest volumes by Nell Marion Nugent may be on the shelves at your local library. The indexes in C&P also index the creeks, runs, paths, roads, counties, etc. The oldest land patents (or grants, as they are called in Northern Neck Virginia) are at the ends of the list, with the newest patents at the beginning. So skip to the end of the list, in the case of a common surname Harris!!! Also, if one has access to the online genealogical database HeritageQuest through your local [or nearby] public library, do a book search for PLACE - Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties, Virginia. You may want to get some instructions from the librarian as to how to search, unless you are really a techie!!! Two books by Landon Covington Bell concerning Lunenburg Co. and Mecklenburg Cos. are on HQ. As I remember, they were rather useful to me. Bell, as I recall, gives some history of those counties, and I seem to remember seeing some tithable lists. It has been years since I have looked at his books--and found *stuff* of interest to me.
