james thanks for your reply but i must say my own recent post re bill harris being a match with your harris dna group 30 rather than our harris dna group 8 was not intended to be at all confrontational with you or any one but solely my astonishment at how this worked out. of course, my/ our harris line and family is documented. i have, of course, talked about this a lot on harris hunters and all my posts include documentation. your confrontation, however, does give me the opportunity to kind of sum all of this up. again, per a brief harris family history written in 1933 by my father's great-uncle, william abraham (abe) harris, i knew that our harris and carter families had moved into ga together and that they settled in cobb/ paulding cos, ga. he said north carolina but i learned from the 1850 census records for cobb/ paulding co, ga that they were all born in south carolina and thanks to my robert carter, jr, i now know for sure that it was laurens co, sc. uncle abe's harris and carter family history states that our robert carter, jr was the father of our elizabeth carter harris, wife of my arch harris. his version i have, and may have been others, does not say who our arch harris' father was but the records both in cobb/ paulding co, ga and laurens co, sc connect my robert carter, jr and my arch harris with our charles harris/ jane cannon and their family, including the fact that this was also our charles harris/ jane cannon's daughter lucinda harris, who married james carter, brother of my/ our elizabeth carter harris. i also know that our robert carter, jr was involved with the estate of his nephew robert carter, son of his oldest brother zimry carter, there in laurens co, sc, which shows that our arch harris married our elizabeth carter in laurens co, sc before families moved by 1830 to gwinnett co, ga. the estate papers for this nephew, robert carter, state that our robert carter, jr had " left his receipts with zimry carter which were examined there in january of 1830 in laurens co, sc." per the 1830 census gwinnett co, ga, our arch harris/ elizabeth carter already had two children under the age of five, who were their oldest daughter, rachel caroline harris, who later married zachariah austin and their oldest son, abraham harris, who later married mary cohron and who in 1860 were in cleburne co, al. their son, my james harris/ anne cooper was born in 1831 in gwinnett co, ga and died in 1872 in paulding co, ga. the laurens co, sc records show that my charles harris was one of the sons of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc. our william harris, jr's laurens co, sc estate papers show that our charles harris was his son and also a laurens co, sc deed connects our charles harris with his mother, our frances rodgers harris, per a deposition she gave re our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers purchasing land for his brother-in-law, patrick cunningham. early on in my research in laurens co, sc, i corresponded with mary mc laughlin aikman and learned from her that her sarah "goode" harris, sister of my charles harris, had married her john mc laughlin before 1800 there in laurens co, sc. her john mc laughlin served as the administrator of the estate of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers. actually, both my/ our charles harris and john mc laughlin had applied for letters of administration, although john mc laughlin is shown to have served primarily as the administrator. the fact that her sarah was named sarah "goode" harris mc laughlin is on her tombstone in perry co, al. a long process has shown me that it was not our william harris, jr's wife who was named frances goode but his father, our william harris, sr's wife, frances. a laurens co, sc deed, cited in the past, states that my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers was the son of our william harris, sr/ frances goode and these early laurens co, sc grants also show that my william harris, sr/ frances goode; his son, my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; our mackerness goode, sr; and his son, our mackerness goode, jr, as well as the cargills, etc, all obtained these ca 1770 grants in this same little river area of laurens co, sc and that they, and my rodgers family, had moved there from this south-side va lunenburg co, va, etc, area. again, the records of lunenburg co, va, show that my william harris, sr/ frances goode was the overseer in 1746 for william marable there in lunenburg co, va for his plantation, finneywood. again, a suit ensued re my william harris, sr/ frances goode with william marable and my goode family, including my mackerness goode, sr, gave depositions re this suit. both these lunenburg co, va and laurens co, sc records connect my william harris, sr/ frances goode with edward harris, sr and his sons, stephen harris and edward harris, jr, who also moved to laurens co, sc, but, again, it was not until both our harris descendants participated in the harris dna project that i knew that we were definitely related to edward harris, sr and his sons. again, i have also told you before, i have not focused on edward harris, sr and someone who has and who descends from him will have to answer you in regard to your confrontations about him and his sons, etc. again, whereas as shown, my william harris, sr/ frances goode obtained this ca 1770, 300-acre grant in laurens co, sc, which became the property of my william harrris, jr/ frances rodgers, there is no evidence that my william harris, sr/ frances goode ever moved to laurens co, sc. also, whereas these lunenburg co, va deeds/ records connect my william harris, sr/ frances goode indirectly with edward harris, sr, they directly connect my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my goode family with william harris,/ judith hudson, including the fact that all were in cornelius cargill' s district in 1749/ 1750 per these early lunenburg co, va tithe lists. again, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson were involved with the will and estate of john wilborn from 1757-1762 there in lunenburg co, va, etc, and there are other involved connections i have talked about as well both in regard to my willliam harris, sr/ frances goode being involved there with my mackerness goode, sr and william harris/ judith hudson. finally, there is now this 1750 dodson survey showing that william harris, sr and william harris, jr had this survey for this land on wynn creek in halifax co, va, which bordered on the sizemores and anthony griffin, and which became a patent to my william harris, sr/ frances goode in 1758, which he sold, per several halifax co, va deeds and in several tracts to john camp. this wynn creek area of halifax co, va would have been in cornelius cargill's district and my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson were the only william harrises who were in cornelius cargill's district in 1750. speaking also of the cargills, it was this cornelius cargill's grandson, cornelius cargill, son of john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley, who paid the tax/ memorial for my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers' 150-acre grant there in 1772 in laurens co, sc and our mackerness goode, jr, who paid the tax/ memorial for cornelius cargill's 1767, 400-acre grant also there in laurens co, sc. then, my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his uncle samuel goode, along with cornelius cargill's widow, sarah, paid the security re the estate of cornelius cargill in 1780 in this 96th dist/ laurens co, sc area. again, my/ our harris line and family is documented and, again, i have talked a lot about and posted this info on harris hunters. finally, of course, our harris line and family is also definitely documented per our harris dna and i hope that these links i have talked about and shown re these documented connections will continue to be totally confirmed in time per our harris dna as well. again, i am very astonished that bill harris tested into your harris dna group 30 instead of our harris dna group 8, given that his ancestor robert harris was living there in 1860 in cleburne co, al in proximity to my arch harris/ elizabeth carter's son, abraham harris, etc. of course, i definitely hope bill will learn how he fits into your harris dna group 30 just as i hope we all learn who our harris families and our harris ancestors were as, again, this has been and continues to be a long, hard, and involved process for many of us. sincere regards, belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8---------26910
This is one of the research projects of Harris DNA group 30. We are attempting to find the ancestry of Robert B. Harris, who were in Georgia in the late 1700's and in Benton County, Alabama by 1840 and Robert is later found in Calhoun and DeKalb County, Alabama. The enclosed descendancy chart for Robert B. Harris includes his family, children and some of the grandchildren. If anyone recognizes any of these Harris or has information of any of this family, we would love to hear from you. Sincerely, James E. Hargraves Harris DNA group 30. ____________________________________ From: JEH7698 To: [email protected], PatCLARE, [email protected], [email protected] Sent: 10/1/2008 11:48:45 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time Subj: Re: Josiah & Tabitha (Harris) Tuck Pat, Pat, Sandy and Bill, I have enclosed a descendancy chart for Robert B. Harris, the earliest known ancestor of Bill Harris. According to the 1880 census, Robert B. Harris was born 1816 in Georgia and his parents were also born in Georgia. A birth year of 1816 would seem to indicate that Robert's father was born 1796 or before. I have completed some additional research of our Edward Harris line from Burke County, North Carolina, who migrated to Georgia by 1794. This extended family owned land and resided in Columbia, Oglethorpe and Greene Counties from 1794 to 1850 and beyond. In an attempt to connect Robert B. Harris to this family line, I have recorded that Edward Harris had 4 sons, by two wives, of whom, the 4 sons of Edward and the 2 sons of David Harris are the only males who could possibly be the father of Robert B. Harris in this line. Unfortunately, none of them fit the profile as follows; David Harris, died 1808, had no sons named Robert. Edward Harris Jr. (3rd) migrated to Pendleton County, South Carolina, never entered Georgia. Gilliam Harris married in 1819, had no sons 1819 to 1830. Seaborn Harris married in 1823, had no sons 1823 to 1830. Edward Harris, (son of David), had no sons named Robert. John Harris, (son of David), had no sons named Robert. It seems possible that the John Harris found as neighbor to Josiah Tuck in 1800 Oglethorpe County, Georgia could be the father or grandfather of Robert B. Harris. I will continue to pursue this lead. Descendants of Robert B. Harris Generation No. 1 1. ROBERT B.1 HARRIS was born 1816 in Georgia. He married EMALINE. She was born 1820 in South Carolina. Children of ROBERT HARRIS and EMALINE are: i. SUSANNAH HARRIS. ix. NANCY HARRIS, b. 1860. Generation No. 2 2. JAMES2 HARRIS (ROBERT B.1) was born 1847 in Alabama, and died 1874. He married SARAH MELINDA TURNER Abt. 1865 in Alabama. She was born 1849 in Alabama. Children of JAMES HARRIS and SARAH TURNER are: i. SARAH F.3 HARRIS, b. Abt. 1866, Alabama. ii. JOHN WILLIAM HARRIS, b. 1868, Alabama; d. 1921. iii. ROBERT NEWBERRY HARRIS, b. 1870, Alabama. iv. ROSA PARALEE HARRIS, b. 1873, Alabama. v. WALTER HARRIS, b. 1875, Alabama. 3. ROBERT2 HARRIS (ROBERT B.1) was born 1853. He married NARCISSUS MCCLAINE Abt. 1874 in Alabama. She was born 1853. Children of ROBERT HARRIS and NARCISSUS MCCLAINE are: i. WILLIAM3 HARRIS, b. 1876, Alabama. ii. BELLVILLE HARRIS, b. 1878, Alabama. iii. ELISHA HARRIS, b. 1879, Alabama. iv. ELIJAH HARRIS, b. 1879, Alabama. Belva, We have gone over this subject many times and I do agree that the Edward Harris line of Lunenburg, Charlotte Counties of Virginia and Wilkes County, North Carolina and Laurens County, South Carolina are all the same family group and undoubtedly a part of Group 8 ancestry, but many of your other claims are simply not supported by any evidence or documentation. I freely admit that I was wrong to believe that my Harris line of Burke County, North Carolina came from Charlotte and Lunenburg County, Virginia, but isn't that a part of all genealogical research, to develop a theory and trace a line to It's ultimate conclusion, to prove or disprove one's ancestry? In seeking the truth of my Harris line, that's all I was doing. In Harris research, this seems to be a normal procedure. With all of the duplicate names, I don't see any other way of doing it. There is no evidence that any group 8 ancestors were in Burke County, North Carolina in the late 1700's or early 1800's. There is no evidence That Minyard Harris existed after 1779 Wilkes County, North Carolina. There is no evidence that Minyard Harris was ever in Burke County, North Carolina. There is no evidence that Minyard Harris had any children. There is no evidence that Minyard Harris died at the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. To the contrary, casualty reports from that battle, as recorded in the Lyman Draper Manuscripts indicate that he was not wounded or killed in that battle. Neither was David Harris. If you have any evidence or documentation of these non-events, I would love to hear it, but not based on associations that do not prove relationships, or DNA matches that may include contradictory paper trails. I agree that we should all try to work together to solve these Harris research problems, but do you really think it is helpful to make unsupported claims without qualifying those claims as theory or speculation? There is now substantial documented proof that the early Harris settlers in Burke County, North Carolina came from Knap of Reeds and Beaver Dam Districts of Granville County, North Carolina. This includes the facts that Edward Harris Sr.; Edward Harris Jr.; Thomas Harris; Gilliam Harris; David Harris and John Harris were all related and migrated from Granville County to Burke County, North Carolina between the years of 1778 and 1784. I think we should all work together as you suggested, and based on all of the duplicate Harris names that we encounter, we should promise ourselves, all of us, not to make unsupported claims without having any documentation to back it up, remembering that a book without evidence is not proof. Thanks for your message. I hope you will continue to help Bill Harris in his search for his ancestors, as we in group 30 are still struggling to understand how he fits into our Harris line and need all of the help we can get. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: this is an open letter to my harris dna group 8 and also to harris dna group 30 but in some ways it involves all of us and our on-going search for our harris families and our harris ancestors and how for most of us this has been and continues to be a long, involved, complex and confusing search. for awhile now i have been corresponding with bill harris, whose ancestor robert harris/ emeline williams was living in 1860 in the same caneland district of cleburne co, al as my arch harris/ elizabeth carter's son wm abraham harris/ mary cohron and our arch harris' brother, daniel harris. i have had for years our jane cannon harris' war of 1812 pension papers re our charles harris which she obtained in 1872 in paulding co, ga. included with the pension papers are affadavits given in 1872 in cleburne co, al by emeline harris and hannah jane wright, stating that our charles harris died in 1865 in greene co, arkansas. for quite a long time i had thought this was bill's robert harris' wife, emeline harris and either their daughter, hannah, or someone related to them, who had given these affadavits there in 1872 in cleburne co, al. about three years ago i began corresponding with another harris cousin, mickey woods, who descends from our arch harris/ elizabeth carter's daughter elizabeth harris, who married in 1865 in cleburne co, al his obadiah hooper. i learned from mickey that several years previously he had corresponded with cynthia harris osborne, who told him that this was her/ our charles harris on the 1850 census for itawamba co, ms with her cannon harris and his brothers, our richard harris; and ransom b. harris and their families. since mickey had not seen our jane cannon harris' pension papers re our charles harris or had, at that time, corresponded with me, he could not really make sense of what cynthia was telling him. however, as shown per the census records, living adjacent to our richard harris both in 1850 in itawamba co, ms and also in 1860 in greene co, arkansas was jasper wright/ emeline and the census records show that jasper wright and his wife, emeline, did have a daughter, hannah jane. the info, then, shows that after our richard harris' wife, sarah, died and jasper wright had also died, probably there in green co, arkansas, richard harris remarried emeline wright and they returned to cleburne co, al. so, instead, of this being bill's robert harris' wife, emeline harris, it was richard harris' 2nd wife, emeline wright harris and her daughter, hannah jane wright, by her 1st husband jasper wright, who gave these affadavits in 1872 in cleburne co, al, stating that our charles harris died in 1865 in greene co, arkansas. per the 1870 cleburne co, al census, emeline, who was called neither wright nor harris, was living with her children and enumerated with mary ingram, who, along with laban pitts, witnessed these 1872 cleburne co, al affadavits by emeline harris and hannah jane wright re our charles harris and his death in 1865 in greene co, arkansas. the info indicates that both richard harris' 1st wife, sarah, and his 2nd wife, emeline wright, were the probable daughters of martin and mary peek ingram, who, along with our robert carter, jr; and our jane cannon harris were charter members of the concord baptist church in 1832 in cobb co, ga. meanwhile, i continued to believe that bill's robert harris was also related to my arch harris/ elizabeth carter and that his robert harris was also a probable son of our charles harris/ jane cannon. recently bill participated in the harris dna project and has learned that he is a harris dna match with harris dna group 30. pat morefield seaver; sandy harris hart and james hargraves are all a match and now bill harris and, so, are all now part of harris dna group 30. i have to tell you i am bowled over in learning this. already we in our harris dna group 8 and harris dna group 30 have had and are having "issues" about our harris families and our interest in them. for example, for some time james hargraves believed that this was his edward harris, sr on twitty's creek there in lunenburg/ charlotte co, va but we have proven that, instead, per our harris dna, that this edward harris, sr and whose sons, stephen harris and edward harris, jr, also moved to laurens co, sc, are part of our harris dna group 8. in my corresponding previously and recently with pat morefield seaver, we also share a lot of interest and similarities also in this same southside va area re our harris families and in these same individuals and families. again, besides her interest in their harris family in this same amelia/ halifax cos, va area, etc, her morefield family was also involved with this jonathan ashworth, who, like, our harris family, was on this partridge store ledger earlier in hanover co, va. also, this same jonathan ashworth lived adjacent the hudsons and this lindsay family in lunenburg co, va. lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 302, 1756, edward morefield of halifax co, va to john hinson of goochland co, va for 7000 pds of net tobacco, 300 acres on sandy creek, bounded by jonathan ashworth, new line, and francis lindsay. witnesses: james hill; richard brown; rober wooding. again, this same robert wooding, per lunenburg co, va deeds i have posted previously, witnessed a number of lunenburg co, va deeds also re my william harris, sr/ frances goode, including one of these halifax co, va deeds wherein he sold this wynn creek land to john camp. it was also this same lindsay family, who inter-married with the same john hight/ mary reade family, who were not only involved with my william harris, sr/ frances goode also there in lunenburg co, va, but it was also john hight/ mary reade's son, reid/ reade hight who was the bondsman for the marriage of david harris to rebecca gilbert in burke co, nc. this david harris/ rebecca gilbert was the son of minyard harris, who was the son of our edward harris, sr of twittys creek there in lunenburg/ charlotte co, va. also, in regard to my interest in my william harris, sr/ frances goode being the son of william harris/ judith hudson, who was the daughter of peter hudson, sr, also there in this lunenburg/ halifax/ mecklenburg cos, va area, pat seaver and harris dna group 30 are also interested in peter hudson, sr and his family per their interest in their harris family, etc. so, again, i am bowled over that bill's robert harris, who was living there in this same caneland district in 1860 in cleburne co, al as my arch harris/ elizabeth carter's son, abraham harris and our arch's brother, daniel harris is a match with harris dna group 30 and that, again, pat seaver and i also share a mutual interest in our harris families and/ or these same individuals and families, including peter hudson, sr, earlier in this same southside va area. i have to admit i sure do not know what to make of all this but it is certainly very interesting! what it does tell me, though, again, is how amazingly complex and confusing these searches are for our harris families and our harris ancestors and how we need to continue to work together in our respective harris groups but still in our larger harris family group as well to learn more and to solve a lot of these "issues" we have in regard to them. of course, we also need to keep trying to find others to participate in the harris dna project because ultimately that is how a lot of these issues we have re our harris families are going to be totally solved and resolved. meanwhile, i would welcome any input/ comments from our harris dna group 8 and harris dna group 30 and/ or others re our similiar interests in our harris families, etc, in these same areas and what this all, perhaps, may mean. belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910 ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? richard brown; rober wooding. again, this same robert wooding, per lunenburg co, va deeds i have posted previously, witnessed a number of lunenburg co, va deeds also re my william harris, sr/ frances goode, including one of these halifax co, va deeds wherein he sold this wynn creek land to john camp. it was also this same lindsay family, who inter-married with the same john hight/ mary reade family, who were not only involved with my william harris, sr/ frances goode also there in lunenburg co, va, but it was also john hight/ mary reade's son, reid/ reade hight who was the bondsman for the marriage of david harris to rebecca gilbert in burke co, nc. this david harris/ rebecca gilbert was the son of minyard harris, who was the son of our edward harris, sr of twittys creek there in lunenburg/ charlotte co, va. also, in regard to my interest in my william harris, sr/ frances goode being the son of william harris/ judith hudson, who was the daughter of peter hudson, sr, also there in this lunenburg/ halifax/ mecklenburg cos, va area, pat seaver and harris dna group 30 are also interested in peter hudson, sr and his family per their interest in their harris family, etc. so, again, i am bowled over that bill's robert harris, who was living there in this same caneland district in 1860 in cleburne co, al as my arch harris/ elizabeth carter's son, abraham harris and our arch's brother, daniel harris is a match with harris dna group 30 and that, again, pat seaver and i also share a mutual interest in our harris families and/ or these same individuals and families, including peter hudson, sr, earlier in this same southside va area. i have to admit i sure do not know what to make of all this but it is certainly very interesting! what it does tell me, though, again, is how amazingly complex and confusing these searches are for our harris families and our harris ancestors and how we need to continue to work together in our respective harris groups but still in our larger harris family group as well to learn more and to solve a lot of these "issues" we have in regard to them. of course, we also need to keep trying to find others to participate in the harris dna project because ultimately that is how a lot of these issues we have re our harris families are going to be totally solved and resolved. meanwhile, i would welcome any input/ comments from our harris dna group 8 and harris dna group 30 and/ or others re our similiar interests in our harris families, etc, in these same areas and what this all, perhaps, may mean. belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910
About a week ago, Belva posted a message from the VA-SOUTHSIDE list regarding Flat Creek of Bedford Co, Lunenburg Co. and Amelia Co. From the Buckholtz maps of 1859: Flat Creek of Lunenburg Co. is located in present-day Mecklenburg Co. in the eastern part of the county (fairly close to Brunswick Co.). It appears that it flows into the Roanoke River. Flatt Creek of Amelia Co. flows south to north across the western part of Amelia Co., then curves to the east and flows into the Appomattox. Its headwaters are in the northwestern part of Nottoway, but most of the creek is located in Amelia Co. and it is quite long. These two creeks are no where near one another. Pat Seaver
Those who are acquainted with some of the history of the Harris family, descendants of whom migrated to Madison Co., KY, are asked to help me with the identity of one Matthew Harris, living in Albemarle Co., VA in 1758. Robert Harris, of course, was a former resident of colonial Louisa Co., VA, where he was surveyor at times, a member of the House of Burgesses at times, and a large landowner in Louisa Co. from which part of Albemarle Co. was formed. I do not recognize, nor have I found evidence, that Matthew Harris is a member of Robert's family. He could have been a grandson, a nephew, or any other close relationship. What is your take on his identity? Here is an abstracted document executed by Robert Harris to his son-in-law John Rodes of Albemarle Co. JOHN RODES. (Living in 1766 in Albemarle Co.) He reportedly was the husband of Sarah Harris, daughter of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co. Albemarle Co. DB 2-67 verifies that by 1758 John Rodes was married to the daughter [unnamed] of Robert Harris. Harris deeded slaves to John Rodes "me thereunto moving but more especially for the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my son in Law John Rodes....give grant bargain sell unto the said John Rodes & his heirs the following Negroes [two slaves, who are named]. 26 Aug 1758 /s/ Robert Harris. Wits: Matthew Harris, David Lewis, Joel Terril, Andrew Wallace." On court date, Albemarle Co., 14th day of Sept 1758 the deed poll was proved by the oaths of Matthew Harris, Joel Terril and Andrew Wallace. (Adapted from Ruth and Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEED BOOK 2, 9 FEBRUARY 1758-12 MARCH 1761 [McLean, VA: Ruth & Sam Sparacio, 1988] p. 20) Note: Andrew Wallace is not linked to my spouse's family, who migrated from Ireland in the 1840s to Massachusetts. A good many Scots-Irish people from Pennsylvania migrated down the Shenandoah Valley prior to the American Revolution. One will find their records in those counties along the Blue Ridge, both in Virginia and in North Carolina. Submitted by E.W.Wallace descendant of Robert Harris's son Christopher Harris of early Madison Co., KY **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Dear Harris descendants of Christopher Harris and his second wife Agnes McCord, and other interested parties: I hope all of you have access to the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest through your local or nearby public library--or perhaps your State Library. Those subscribers who live in North Carolina and Texas should contact their State libraries [which I hope are NOT going to be closed because of faltering budgets]. Doing a search of HeritageQuest for Persons (under Books) I typed in search terms: McCord and Pennsylvania. There is a book-- a brief genealogical history of the McCord family, who probably came from Pennsylvania down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Some settled in Augusta Co., VA and later in Albemarle Co., VA. Some members seemed to go on to South Carolina. Those McCords who probably settled in early Kentucky may be from the Albemarle Co. branch, as are Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord. (Christopher Harris appears in the so-called The 1787 Census of Virginia, in both Albemarle Co. and in Madison Co., KY) Here is a citation of the genealogy of the McCord family Lofquist, Margaret U, The Genealogical Record of Some McCord Families in America [Arlington Hts, IL: 1965] The authoress gives this information about the will of John McCord of Moorman's River, Albemarle Co., VA: Will dated March 2, 1764, recorded November 8, 1764 John McCord of Moormans River, Albemarle County, Virginia amed his sons John and Benjamin as executors. John was bequeathed the hom plantation on Moormans River and Benjamin was to have the plantation on Ivy Creek. Son William D. and Christopher Harris (his son-in-law) are mentioned as well as his wife (but not by name). Question: Does anyone have a copy of the actual will? How cooperative are the clerks at the Albemarle Courthouse? (Some clerks in some counties, although I may have sent a check with my request, rebuff my requests for a copy of a document.) There is mention in this brief genealogy of McCord's Fort in Pennsylvania. In 1995, in the old State Library in Richmond, VA, I copied down some of the McCord patents from the old index cards. Today, however, these abstracted patents should be recorded on the Land Records section of the online Library of Virginia website _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm) My research shows that in 1755 and 1756 these McCord males received patents in Albemarle Co, several of them on Branches of Moreman's River: 1756 James McCord - Albemarle Co. 1755 John McCord - Albemarle Co. 1756 Joseph McCord - Albemarle Co. 1756 William McCord - Albemarle Co. There are later Virginia land patents; therefore, probably some McCord males, perhaps relatives, did not remove to Kentucky. E.W.Wallace descendant of Christopher Harris & Agnes McCord PS. According to Lyman Chalkley's abstracts in The Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlements in Virginia, Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord sold property in that county. The date escapes me presently. (Scottish lassies frequently kept their maiden names, as I learned from reading some tombstones in a village in Scotland some years ago.) Chalkley's abstracts in three volumes can be found on this URL. Each volume has its own index--at the bottom of the first or second screen. They are rough indexes. The URL may have changed with Ancestry.com absorbing rootsweb [which is still Free, however.] _www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/) Remove any punctuation fore and aft of the URL before pasting in your search blank. **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Below is a 1772 Prince Edward Co. deed where Matthew Harris, P.E Co. sells his 100a tract (Sandy River/Sailor Cr) to John Tabb...deed states Matthew Harris rec'd this land from William Rice with a Matthew Rice as an adjoining neighbor....and from what I can find, apparently these Rice men were from Hanover Co. VA with Matthew Rice noted in 1741 Amelia record as being "of St. Martins Par., Hanover Co"..and if we take that time period okf 1741 & add 7 yrs to 1741, we have 23 June 1748 my Thomas Harris & Harrison Harris with back-to-back Amelia Co. deeds & also both of St. Martins Hanover Co. with indentures for Amelia Co. land....we know there was a Thomas Rice who was adj. land owner to a 1723 Thomas Harris Little River patent & William Rice has been mentioned in Amelia deed 26 Nov 1745 below involving several Harris men with David Harris selling to Benjamin Harris, both of St. Martins, Hanover Co. VA. Anyway, I personally believe we do have some commonality here with Hanover Co. Harris & Rice men and their Amelia Co. lands. I don't know what happened to Matthew Harris after the 1772 P.E. deed & asking if anyone does know where he went...is he the one who left his will (below) in Brunswick Co. 1790? Matthew 1772 of P.E. Co. must have had a son, Matthew Junr, as in below 1768 P.E. Co. deed, Matthew Jr. also sells his P.E. Co. tract plus another P.E. 1757 record below indicates a son, Daniel. The Matthew Harris died 1790 Brunswick Co. did not mention sons Matthew or Daniel in his will, but did name sons...Moody, John, Charles, Robert, Benjamin in his 1790 will. What we have here is a Matthew Harris who shows up in the Amelia tithables as early as 1737 was in the Amelia Co. tithables up to 1752 (Prince Edward Co. formed 1752 from Amelia)...then we have Matthew Harris who sells his P.E. Co. land in 1772 as well as Matthew, Jr. in 1768 P.E. Co. both evidently sold out of P.E. Co. & disappeared from P.E. Co.? With Matthew Harris being Amelia Co. tithable by 1737 gives us some idea as to his possible age...at least 21 in 1737....= 1716 birth year & perhaps even older. About Dabney Harris of Virginia and North Carolina [DNA group # 6]: Our Dabney Harris, was the son of Christopher Harris [Madison Co, KY] and Mary Dabney of Albemarle Co, VA [proven per will of Cornelius Dabney], researched by direct descendants of Dabney Harris, namely; Lillian Densley, Ellen Radford, Cathea Curry, and Ralph Harris, DNA group # 6 Dabney Harris, wife Mary, and their family lived in Surry/ Wilkes Counties, NC during the known years of 1782-1797, then moved back and forth to Washington County, VA where Dabney Harris died in 1810. Benjamin Harris, Mary "Polly" Harris-Roy, Christopher Harris, and Dabney Harris, Junior have been proven by our research to be the children of Dabney and Mary Harris. The aforementioned children all removed to Pulaski County, KY and lived near one another. Our research also suggests other children of Dabney Harris "may have been", Silas Harris of Surry Co, NC, Sarah Harris-Austin and Isabella Harris-Musick, [more research is needed to either "rule in or rule out" these three "suspected children"]. We hope this opens new doors for all that are interested in "Dabney Harris" research. pat again, trying to learn who our harris families were and to sort this all out in regard to them in this amelia/ lunenburg cos, va area is proving to also be very involved and confusing as well. i have not myself focused on this amelia co, va area, although i am aware that others in our harris dna group 8 have. the info does indicate, again, that like this richard harris, this was hans hendrick, II, who was also in this same flatt creek area of amelia co, va. again, this was the same hendrick/ osborne family, etc, also involved with my mackerness goode, sr and william harris, sr/ frances goode not just there in lunenburg co, va, but also on into laurens co, sc, which i have cited and talked about previously. again, although i cannot say this for sure, this appears to be the harris/ goode/ jefferson/ osborne line also tracing back to henrico co, va but whether this richard harris was related to this same harris line and family or not, i cannot say or identify him. again, although my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my mackerness goode, sr is shown to have been involved with these same families i.e the hendrick and osbornes, and even the jeffersons, etc, this, as our harris dna shows, is not my harris line and family. here, again, is some of this info showing, again, as i say that hans hendrick, II, was also in this same flatt creek area of amelia co, va and his amelia co, va will showing that he had daughters: sarah hendrick goode and elizabeth hendrick osborne. again, this was this same hans hendrick, II's son, hans hendrick, III, who married margaret wynn, daughter of col william wynn/ frances reade, who also moved to laurens co, sc and who continued to be involved there with my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his brother-in-law, patrick cunningham, per the laurens co, sc deeds i have posted previously and talked about. again, the same henry isbell, who was also involved with hans hendrick,II, in this flatt creek area of amelia co, va was the same henry isbell, who witnessed the 1761 lunenburg co, va deed wherein john gilliam, the elder, and his son, robert gilliam of prince george co, va sold the land on twitty's creek to our edward harris, sr, whose sons stephen harris and edward harris, jr also moved to laurens co, sc and whose harris descendants are a harris group 8 dna match. so, again, this is really involved re these connections, etc. 2. Hance Hendrick II (c1690s? - 1773) Hance Hendrick “Jr.” is mentioned as a landowner in a 1718 patent in King William County[24]. He evidently acquired the land by deed, now lost. As mentioned above, a 1725 patent in King William to “Hance Hendrick Jun.” was entered the same day as Hance Hendrick Sr.’s, for land in the same neighborhood. Hance Jr.’s land was apparently on the part of Boot Swamp that became Caroline County. On 16 June 1738, as Hance Hendrick of Caroline County, he patented 400 acres on Mayes Branch of Flatt Creek in Amelia County[25]. By 25 July 1746 he was Hance Hendrick “Senior”, when he filed two patents[26] for another 200 acres on Mayes Branch of Flatt Creek and 304 acres on Flatt Creek in Amelia County. The patent for 304 acres was described as “beginning at his son Hans Hendrick’s corner hickory”. Hance Hendrick Jr. (the 3rd) had patented this land the same day[27]. He was married to a woman named Rachel, possibly Rachel Hurt, at least by 1754 when she relinquished dower to his sale of land to his brother. He left a will in Amelia County dated 20 January 1773[28]. He named his wife Rachel, and two sons: Hance (the 3rd) and John. Daughters named in the will were Anne Hendrick, Elizabeth Osborne and Sarah Goode. The will was witnessed by Benjamin Hendrick (presumably his brother) and Obadiah and John Hendrick (presumably sons of Benjamin or Hance) as well as Thomas Osborne (presumably Elizabeth’s husband). Benjamin Hendrick and Thomas Osborne were named executors again, i am also still trying to learn and/ or figure out myself------- was this sarah hendrick goode, daughter of this hans hendrick, II, the wife of my mackerness goode, sr or his son, our mackerness goode, jr and if not, who was she? again, this was my mackerness goode, sr, wife, sarah, who sold land to reps osborne, who was part of this same hendrick/ osborne family, per the following lunenburg co, va deed. i know that this was my mackerness goode, sr because he signed his name with a mark and our mackerness goode, jr did sign his name. lunenburg co, va deed book 3, page 156, 1752, mackerness goode of lunenburg to reps osborne of same for 5 pds a certain tract of land of 165 acres on both sides of the bluestone creek, part of a larger patent to mackerness goode. signed: mackerness goode, with a mark. no witnesses. sarah, wife of mackerness goode, relinquished her right of dower. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910 --- On Tue, 9/23/08, Patricia Seaver <[email protected]> wrote: From: Patricia Seaver <[email protected]> Subject: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Richard Harris Amelia Co, VA To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 11:50 AM Does anyone know where the Great Fork is located in Amelia Co? Hello. There is a good possibility that my Harris ancestors [ Capt William Harris (the one who lived on Hickory Creek, VA ) who married Mary Hudson could be linked to the Harris/Knight DNA group 2. I have very little information about Sarah Wright or Nathan Harris. Can someone fill me in on some data please. The connection to this family is by Susannah Harris [dau of Capt William and Mary Hudson Harris, who married John Gunter. Their son, Thomas N. Gunter married Mary 'Polly' Ware. She is part of the WARE family who intermarried with Cole, McGehee, Almond, Gunter, etc. These families lived in Louisa County, Va and who knows where else. Thanks in advance for any assistance. To those Harris-Hunters and descendants of Madison Co., KY who think they may have connections to the Dabney family [of Huguenot origin]. This is to notify you that if you have access to Ancestry.com through your local library--or perhaps your personal subscription--the several volumes of the Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers have been incorporated. His abstracts are generally of families of colonial Virginia--who may have been collaterals of some of your Virginia families. Take a look, if you can. My understanding is these pages concerning Dabney family appear: Vol. I - pages 396-429 Also a later volume [not identified by me yet] Pages 2254-2256, the latter being taken from St. Peter's Parish Vestry Book, New Kent Co., VA Also, if you have access to the online genealogical database HeritageQuest through your local [or nearby or State] library the several volumes of Edward Pleasants Valentine papers also appear there. Here is a *copy and paste* I took from the latter source. If Dabneys do not interest you, perhaps other surnames will. Oh, yes - I have a few notes on these surnames in Granville Co., NC, colonial times. Langston, Satterwhite A few notes on Womack of colonial Goochland Co., Henrico Co. and I believe of Cumberland Co., VA.
