    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] reply to pat re also this samuel harris, wife, ann
    2. belva cauthen
    3. pat   again, we have corresponded before in regard to this samuel harris, wife, ann, and, again, i cannot totally identify him but in reviewing, i have noted some things that are relevant and certainly interesting.   the only other samuel harris i know, who may have also been there in lunenburg co, va, is the samuel harris, who was the son of william harris/ judith hudson.   first, here is the info you just posted re this samuel harris, wife, ann.   >From Lunenburg Co. Deed Bk 7-127 June 3, 1761 from James Roberts Jr of Halifax County, to  Samuel Harris of Lunenburg] and Cumberland Parish, for the yearly rent of  the quitrents, have leased and do farm and let a certain tract of land in L  and Cumberland Parish on the******** north side of Meherrin River containing  200 acres, it being the land laid off by***** George Walton *****for John  Loving, unto the said Harris and his wife ******Ann during each of their  natural lives, with the improvements and all other appurtenances belonging  to the land. To the performance of this deed, Roberts binds himself in the  sum of 200 pds., to be paid to Harris after the 1st breach of these articles  above mentioned. Signed - James Roberts. Wit - none. Recorded June 2, 1761  [?] (Source: TLC Genealogy, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS  7 & i[1761-1764] [Miami Beach: TLC Genealogy, 1990], p. 17) (This Samuel Harris, wife Ann is different from the Samuel  Harris, Baptist, ) lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 124, 1759, james roberts,  jr of halifax co, va to ****michael johnson of lunenburg, part obtained in  patent by ****gidion johnson***** for 600 acres, except as it is already leased  to *****samuel harris, joyner, for 5 years. wit: john chandler; saml harris;  charles gravett. So...this Samuel Harris is a joyner  [carpenter] and  he has a wife Ann. He still lives north of the Meherrin in 1776 and he is born  at least by 1738. His lands came from George Walton who shared a border on  Reece's Fork of Twitty's Creek. His first lease with James Roberts was for 5  years, and later he had a lifetime lease with Claiborne.                                                     #   again, this was my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who had a grant for a 1000 acres there in lunenburg co, va in 1752.     in 1755, he sold 900 acres of this land to william reade and the other 100 acres to william tibbs per, again, the following lunenburg co, va deeds.   lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 213, 1755, william harris of lunenburg co, va to william reade of same for 160 pds,  900 acres at the head branches of the bluestone creek,  bounded by a new line, william tibbs, william harriss' old line.   signed:  william harriss.  witnesses:  robert wooding; thomas  bedford; william jones.  frances, wife of william harris, relinquised her right of dower.            lunenburg co, va deed book 4, p.209: William HARRIS of Lunenburg, to William TIBBS, for £10, a certain tract of land in L (being part of HARRISS’ tract he since sold to Mr. William READ), and bounded by HARRISS’ new line, containing about 100 acres. Signed: William HARRISS. Wit: ROBERT WOODING, Thos. BEDFORD, Wm JONES. Rec. Oct 7, 1755 after Frances, the wife of the said William, relinquished her right of dower.   this was also my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who would have also witnessed the following lunenburg co, va deed wherein william reade sold 100 of these acres to john hight.    lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 201, 1755, william reade of lunenburg co, va to john hight of same for 16 pds, 100 acres in lunenburg on the head branches of the bluestone creek, being part of a tract of land patented in the name of william harris on nov 13, 1752 and by him conveyed to me by a deed yesterday and bounded by new lines.  signed:  william reade.  witnesses:  william marable; henry may; william harris.   then, i have also noted that there is this lunenburg co, va deed which also connects both william reade and john hight with this same james roberts, jr,  who was also connected with samuel harris, wife, ann.   so, again, these connections are certainly interesting.   lunenburg co, va deed book 4, page 123, william reade of lunenburg co, va to john hight of same for 16 pds, 100 acres in lunenburg and bounded by goode, bluestone creek, it being part of a tract of 1000 acres patented to william harris nov 13, 1752.  signed: william reade.  witnesses:  matthew marable; james roberts, jr; samuel johnson. recorded june 3, 1755.  hannah, wife, of william reade, relinquished her right of dower.   again, it is this same james roberts, jr, who is shown to have leased this land to samuel harris, wife, ann, which you just posted, who was, like my william harris, sr/ frances goode, also involved with william reade and john hight------interesting.   again, and also, per the info, john hight's wife, mary, was a reade either a daughter or sister of william reade and it was john hight/ mary reade's son reade/ reid hight who was the bondsman for david harris' marriage to rebecca gilbert in burke co, nc.   this david harris/ rebecca gilbert is stated to have been the son of minyard harris and grandson of our edward harris, sr of lunenburg/ charlotte co, va whose sons, stephen harris and edward harris, jr also moved to laurens co, sc.   so, again, these connections are certainly interesting and essentially do connect this samuel harris, wife, ann, also with the same individuals/ families there in lunenburg/ halifax cos, va.   i will keep continue to review and  re-study info re this james roberts, jr, etc.   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910

    1. Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris Lineage
    2. Woodrow Harris, For the past 15 years or so, most of the people you mention in your message have appeared in the printed newsletter of Harris Hunters or on this Harris Hunters forum. I must tell you however, that there has been much controversy in the past concerning the early part of the Harris lineage in your descendants list. There are many different opinions regarding the descendants of Sergeant John Harris, although there seems to be no question as to the ancestors of Sergeant John Harris, based on the excellent research of the late Noel Robertson and her conclusions are believed to be accurate by most true Harris researchers. It is true that Sergeant John Harris had a son Thomas, the oldest child, some say born 1614 or 1616, but there is overwhelming evidence that Thomas Harris' only sons were John and Thomas and he had 5 daughters, but no son named Edward. John, the son of Thomas had 9 daughters, but no sons. Thomas, the son of Thomas had 6 sons, as Edward, Thomas, Benjamin, Stephen, John and Robert, and a daughter Mary. It has been reported in some old publications that Thomas Harris, 1616-1672 was the father of Thomas Harris, ca.1630-1688, but based on wills and land records of early Virginia, this claim has proven to be untrue. The Thomas Harris, died 1688 did have a son Edward and there was an Edward Jr., son of Edward. There are other Harris forums, such as "Harris"; "Harris DNA"; "Harris-GenForum" and "Harris-Rootsweb", and I think there is a "Harris-Colonial Virginia". None of these are as active as Harris-Hunters, but do discuss many different branches of Harris. Hope this helps. Sincerely, James E. Hargraves Harris DNA Group 30. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] reply to pat also re edward harris
    2. belva cauthen
    3. pat   if this edward harris, sr, wife, ann, is the  same of both louisa co, va and lunenburg/ charlotte co, va   and the son of our william harris/ mary giles, the info i have seen on him states that he was born ca 1710 and this edward  harris, wife, ann, would not have been old enough to have  been the father of my william harris, sr/ frances goode.   again, as i have cited many times both my william harris, sr/  frances goode; my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; my  mackerness goode, sr; his son, our mackerness goode, jr;   john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley; theirs son, cornelius cargill/ wife, sarah, all obtained these ca 1770 grants there in laurens co, sc where it is shown they continued to be involved with each other there.   my william harris, sr/ frances goode obtained a grant for 300 acres and my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers obtained a grant for 150 acres.  actually, both their grants were applied  for in 1768.   according to sc patent law at this time, you were allowed 100  acres as headright and 50 additional acres for ones wife;  children/ males, who were under the age of 16; and for each slave and/ or servant.   this shows that in 1768 my william harris, jr and frances  rodgers were married but that they had no children.  so, if you  subtract about 20 years from 1768, you get 1748, which is  indicated to have been about when my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers would have been born.   again, i know from a laurens co, sc deed that our william harris,  jr/ frances rodgers was the oldest son of our william harris, sr/ frances goode, who died somewhere intestate by 1796 but it was not in laurens co, sc.    again, despite having gotten this ca 1768/ 1772, 300-acre  grant there in laurens co, sc, there is no evidence that my  william harris, sr/ frances goode ever moved to laurens co, sc or that he died there.   again, since my william harris, jr/ frances goode is indicated to  have been born ca 1748 and to have been the oldest, and for now, the only son of our william harris, sr/ frances goode, if you subtract 20 years from 1748, you get 1728, which, again, is indicated to have been the approximate date of when my  william harris, sr/ frances goode would have been born.   actually the lunenburg co, va info indicates that my william  harris, sr/ frances goode were married by 1746.   again, this was my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who, is shown to have been the overseer for william marable's plantation, finneywood, there in 1746 in lunenburg co, va.   again, a suit ensued re my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william marable and my mackerness goode, sr; his son, our samuel goode gave affadavits re this suit.   our mackerness goode, sr attested that our william harris, sr  and his wife, our frances goode, had moved on to marables'  property in 1746 but does not state that they had any family at  this time.   i repeat all of this not only to show my william harris, sr/ jr's approximate, but somewhat definitive, dates of  birth, but also his earliest connections with our mackerness goode, sr and our goode family there in lunenburg co, va.   again, if edward harris, sr, wife, ann, was the same both there  in louisa co, va and also in lunenburg co, va and he was the  son of our william harris/ mary giles and who is stated to have  been born ca 1710, then, again, edward harris, sr, would not  have been old enough to have been the father of my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who was born ca 1726/ 1728.   another thing i want to look at are these deeds said to have  been for our harris family.     again, there is this louisa co, va deed wherein our edward harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles, sold land to this william harris, who is said to have been the same william harris of goochland co, va and who some have thought was the william harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles.   it is this william harris, whose daughter, agnes is stated to have  married john cawthon, and who, again, continued to live in goochland co, va.   (as an aside, and somewhat ironically, i suppose, i am married  to my husband, who is a cauthen---- but i am a harris!!!)   again, there is this louisa co, va deed wherein edward harris  sold land to this land to this william harris but also the brunswick co, va deed wherein william harris sold land also  there in louisa co, va to stephen harris and both these dates  were recorded on the very same date in the louisa co, va  orders book.   surely that is not just coincidence.     meanwhile other louisa/ hanover co, va deeds connect this  same stephen harris also with your husband's tom harris'  ancestor david harris/ jane landy richardson.   it is this william harris of brunswick co, va, who i believe was  mine and that he was william harris/ judith hudson of brunswick/ lunenburg co, va.   whereas one might have said that this was my william harris, sr/  frances goode, who sold this land in louisa co, va to stephen  harris, as i have just shown and talked about again,  my william harris, sr/ frances goode was born ca 1726/ 1728 and  he could not have been the son of our william harris/ mary giles.   instead, my william harris, sr/ frances goode is indicated to have been the son of a harris and his father, per my studying these lunenburg co, va deeds and connections, is indicated to me to have been william harris/ judith hudson.   if i saw any connections re my william harris, sr/ frances goode with this william harris of goochland co, va, i would definitely say so, but i do not.   again, in this geneagraph kathryn wiggins compiled re our captain thomas harris' line and family, and which can be found in her "harris papers"/ granville co, nc, she has that william harris/ judith hudson was one of the sons of our william harris/ mary giles, brother of your david harris/ jane landry richardson; edward harris, etc.   i agree with her not  because she says so but this is what my own research indicates.     i know that this, of course, disagrees with what lee harris and  or gideon harris thought and wrote, etc, but one needs to look at why they may have come to their conclusions and why i have come to my own conclusions.   at the same time, i am always willing to look at what you and others also find and post.   i cannot say, for now, whether descendants of this william harris of goochland co, va would be a harris match with our harris dna group 8 or not?   again, all i can say is that, per my own research, this william  harris of goochland co, va, is not indicated to have been our/ my harris ancestor and instead that my william harris, sr/ frances goode's father is indicated to have been william harris/ judith hudson also early there in lunenburg co, va.   here again are these deeds showing, as i say, that edward harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles, sold this land to this william harris and that william harris of brunswick co, va sold land also there in louisa co, va to stephen harris, which were recorded on the very same date in louisa co, va.   Louisa County Court 12th day of September 1743, page 73, An Indenture made between William Harris of Brunswick County of the one part and Stephen Harris of Saint Martin’s Parish in the County of Hanover of the other part concerning sixty two acres of land lying in the parish of Fredericksville in this County with a Memorandum of Livery of Seisin and Receipt thereon endorsed ws this day in open Court proved to be the act and deed of the said William Harris by the Oaths of James Waddy, Richard Donalson and John Adams witnesses thereto and admitted to Record. 3. this post got sent before i was through with it and i have no idea what key i accidentially hit for it to be sent and/ or to be sent a number of times!!   pat   i am going to respond to both your posts re this samuel harris, wife, ann, and this nehemiah franks but it will just take me time to do this.   first of all, i wish myself that there were more people interested in the harris families and these same families in lunenburg co, va and who knew more about them.   all i can do is cite what i have noted per these lunenburg co, va deeds, etc, and what this info does show and indicate to me.    i am definitely interested in this nehemiah franks.  you are right he is definitely shown to have been involved with edward harris, sr and his sons there on twitty's creek, per these lunenburg co/ charlotte co, va deeds and he was the same nehemiah frank/ franks who also moved to laurens co, sc.   the following laurens co, sc deed associates nehemiah franks there with james mc lauglin and charles allen.   laurens co, sc deed book B, page 234, 1787, nehemiah franks to marshall franks for 50 pds, 50 acres, part of grant to charles allen in 1773, conveyed to nehemiah franks in 1774.  witnesses:  james mc laughlin; william turner.     this was james mc lauglin's son john mc laughlin, who married before 1800 laurens co, sc our sarah goode harris, sister of my/ our charles harris/ jane cannon, children of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc.   again, this was charles allen, jr/ lucy bacon, son of charles allen, sr also of lunenburg co, va. charles allen, jr died in laurens co, sc and his widow lucy bacon allen remarried charles smith.   again, it was charles allen, jr/ lucy bacon smith's  daughter mary/ polly allen, who also married before or ca 1800 in laurens co, sc our john l. harris, also brother of my charles harris/ jane cannon, sons  also of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers.   again, in regard to the allens, charles allen, sr is shown, per these lunenburg co, va deeds, to have been involved there with james burton, jr and sr, whose son thomas burton also moved to and died in laurens co, sc.   lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 107, 1760, silvanus walker, jr of lunenburg co, va and his wife, sarah, to charles allen of same for 250 pds, 200 acres in lunenburg co, va on the north side of the staunton river bounded by ornsby; goode.  signed: silvanus walker, jr.  witnesses:  william perry; james burton, jr; mary perry, her mark.  sarah, wife of silvanus walker, jr, relinquised her dower rights.   lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 121, 1760, james burton of lunenburg co, va to silvanus walker, jr of same for 100 pds, 200 acres on the north side of the staunton river and bounded by ornsby and goode.  signed:  james burton.  witnesses:  charles allen, william perry.  mary perry, her mark. judith, wife of james burton, reliquished her dower rights.   again, it was also james burton, sr's daughter agnes burton who married james hudson, son of peter hudson, sr and james burton was also named as a legatee of peter hudson, sr.   again, land my charles harris/ jane cannon owned in laurens co, sc with james holley had belonged previously to sylvanus walker, and bordered on lydall allen, who was also the son of charles allen, jr/ lucy bacon smith and involved some kind of suit with thomas burton.   laurens co, sc deed book J, page 64, 1809, john clark, sheriff, to james holley and charles harris for $53, 150 acres former property of silvanus walker on raborn creek bordered on jonathan downs; lydall allen; robert creswell, sold by writ of fi fa at suit of exix and exor of thomas burton, deceased.  witnesses:  william irby;  john mc harg; john garlington, c.c   so, these connections are just very involved period and how does one single out what is the most important and relevant connection or connections?   the thing is nehemiah franks is not the only marker or certainly the earliest for my interest in my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers from this lunenburg co, va area on into laurens co, sc.   instead, the earliest markers for my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers both there in this lunenburg co, va area and on into laurens co, sc would be my mackerness goode, sr; john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley; and their son, cornelius cargill, who also by 1770 had obtained these grants in laurens co, sc and who continued to be significantly involved with each other there, which, again, i have cited many times, per both these grants in laurens co, sc and these connections there in lunenburg co, va.   edward harris, sr's sons stephen harris and edward harris, jr are not indicated to have moved to laurens co, sc until 1790/ 1800.   again, as i have said in the past, there are certainly things, per both the records there both in this lunenburg co, va area, as well as in laurens co, sc, which have always indicated to me that my william harris, sr/ frances goode and their son, my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc, were related to edward harris, sr and his sons but the question has always been to me ----------is how were/ are they related?   again, it was not until both our harris descendants participated in the harris dna project that i knew for sure that we were/ are related harris families.   and who, again, is/ was this edward harris, sr in lunenburg/ charlotte co, va whose sons stephen harris and edward harris, jr also moved to laurens co, sc?   are we still trying to figure out who this edward harris, sr was and when do we think this edward harris, sr was born, etc?   of course, we only have two choices-----either this edward harris, sr is descending from our william harris/ mary giles (?) b ca 1672 or his brother, edward harris b ca 1674, sons of our major william harris, whose widow, alice, re-married george alvis.       belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910

    3. again, the same memucan hunt, son of ralph hunt, who married mary wade, daughter of robert wade, sr and who were the same robert wade, sr and ralph hunt involved in this 1735 hanover co, va processioning record in hanover co, va with william harris and richard harris there, was also very involved with samuel harris also in lunenburg/ halifax co, va,    this was the same samuel harris, who sold land to robert wade, sr, which was witnessed by hampton wade and richard ellis, who were also involved with our edward harris, sr and with both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson, etc, there in lunenburg co, va.   as i have just shown, samuel harris sold land to thomas dendy and this same thomas dendy, who also moved to laurens co, sc, was involved in this suit with memucan hunt re sylvanus walker, jr chosing memucan hunt as his guardian.   sylvanus walker, jr, who was called "jr" in this lunenburg co, va area was actually the son of tandy walker, wife, judith, who both died ca 1750 in lunenburg co, va and this sylvanus walker, jr also moved to laurens co, sc and, again, connections there also very involved with him and my harris family.   again, sylvanus walker, jr was one of the appraisers of my william harris, jr's 1800 laurens co, sc estate.   also, land my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers' son, my charles harris/ jane cannon owned in laurens co, sc bounded on this same sylvanus walker, jr, and, again, all of this also still more involved.   again, this thomas burton named also in this deed involving my charles harris/ jane cannon; lydall allen; and sylvanus walker, jr, was the same thomas burton, son of james burton, sr, also of lunenburg co, va whose daughter agnes burton married james hudson, son of peter hudson, sr.   these lunenburg co, va deeds records, which, again, i have posted in the past connect james burton, sr with peter hudson, sr as well as with sylvanus walker, jr and charles allen, sr there.   again, this was also charles allen, jr/ lucy bacon allen smiths daughter mary/ polly allen who also married our john harris, brother of my charles harris/ jane cannon, children of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers.   laurens co, sc deed book J, page 64, 1809, john clark, sheriff, to james holley and charles harris for $53, 150 acres former property of silvanus walker on raborn creek bordered on jonathan downs; lydall allen; robert creswell, sold by writ of fi fa at suit of exix and exor of thomas burton, deceased.  witnesses:  william irby;  john mc harg; john garlington, c.c   lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 107, 1760, silvanus walker, jr of lunenburg co, va and his wife, sarah, to charles allen of same for 250 pds, 200 acres in lunenburg co, va on the north side of the staunton river bounded by ornsby; goode.  signed: silvanus walker, jr.  witnesses:  william perry; james burton, jr; mary perry, her mark.  sarah, wife of silvanus walker, jr, relinquised her dower rights.   lunenburg co, va deed book 6, page 121, 1760, james burton of lunenburg co, va to silvanus walker, jr of same for 100 pds, 200 acres on the north side of the staunton river and bounded by ornsby and goode.  signed:  james burton.  witnesses:  charles allen, william perry.  mary perry, her mark. judith, wife of james burton, reliquished her dower rights.   here is also again, the laurens co, sc deed showing that our john harris was the son-in-law of lucy bacon allen, widow of charles allen, jr, who had remarried charles smith.      Laurens, South Carolina      Deed Book L: 64      I, Lucy Smith, Laurens District, South Carolina in consideration of the love and affection which I have for my daughter Polly Harris and her husband John L. 3. again, i have posted my interest in these connections in the past.   per this info posted by pat clare/ pat mason harris re this 1735 hanover co, va processioning record re this richard harris and william harris, etc, again, these were the same robert wade, sr and ralph hunt, who also either moved to or also had connections to lunenburg/ halifax co, va.   1735: William Harris  processioned with Daniel Patrick; Watson; Joyner; Cook; Hudson; John Wingfield;  Watson and Cornelius Tinsley. Peter Garland and Ralph Hunt appeared for Mr  Robert Wade who represented Mr William Brd, esq and Peter Marks and William  Jennings for William Alsop and Mr Richard Harris;***** Mr George Vaughan; and Mr  John Ragland did not appear though lawfully warned. 1739: Richard Harris  ****in one precint with George Vaughan; Widow Fraser; John Joyner; Benjamin  Alsop; Martin Baker; Anthony Winston's orphans; Richard Harris' orphans; Barbara  Winston; Anthony Waddy, precinct.     memucan hunt, son of this same ralph hunt, married mary wade, daughter of this same robert wade, sr, who were named in this hanover co, va 1735 processioning record with this william harris and richard harris.   this is the same memucan hunt/ mary wade, who had a patent  in lunenburg co, va with samuel harris, which was in this same bluestone creek area of lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va where my william harris, sr/ frances goode; william harris/ judith hudson; and my goode family also owned land and lived.   in fact, and, again, this land patented by memucan hunt and samuel harris bordered on john wilborn's corner and, again, both my william harris, sr/ frances goode and william harris/ judith hudson were involved with the will and estate of john wilborn from 1757-1762 there in lunenburg co, va.   this is indicated to be the same samuel harris, who william harris/ judith hudson sold land to in 1749/ 1750 in lunenburg co, va and, per another lunenburg co, va deed, to also be the same samuel harris involved with my william harris, sr/ frances goode; the same samuel harris, who continued to be involved with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley in this halifax co, va area; the same samuel harris, i believe, who married lucy camp and who became col samuel harris and the noted baptist minister rev samuel harris and who, again, stated that he was born in 1724 near the pamunkey river in hanover co, va.   samuel harris was also the executor of the estate of this adlar david, who died in 1749/ 1750 in this lunenburg/ halifax co, va area.    either peter hudson, sr or jr was, also, as i have posted in the past, involved with the appraisal of the estate of this adlar david.    per a lunenburg co, va deed, samuel harris sold land to robert wade, sr, which had belonged to adlar david on difficult creek, which was adjacent william irby.   this was the same william irby, who, per a brunswick co, va deed, sold land to andrew wade, sr of goochland co, va, which was witnessed by richard brown and william harris and it is this william harris, who i believe was william harris/ judith hudson.   andrew wade, sr remarried susannah tinsley, said to have been a chiles, and who was the mother of rachel tinsley cargill, wife of john cargill, sr.   again, samuel harris not only continued to be involved with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley in this same halifax co, va area, but, again, john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley also moved by 1770 to this same little river area of laurens co, sc where my william harris, sr/ frances goode; my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers; my mackerness goode, sr and his son, our mackerness goode, jr had obtained these ca 1770 laurens co, sc grants.   again, a tax or memorial had to be paid in charleston on these grants.  our mackerness goode, jr paid the tax/ memorial for cornelius cargill, who was the son of john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley and cornelius cargill also paid the tax/ memorial for my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 150-acre 1772 grant.   also my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers and his uncle samuel goode paid the security, along with cornelius  cargill's wife, sarah, for cornelius cargill when he died ca 1780 in this laurens/ 96th dist, sc area.    all of this i have posted in the past a number of times.   again, also the same richard ellis, who witnessed the lunenburg co, va deed re samuel harris to robert wade, sr also witnessed the 1761 lunenburg co, va deed re john and robert gilliam to our edward harris, sr, whose sons stephen harris and edward harris, jr also moved to laurens co, sc and whose descendants are a match with my brother david harris and who are also part of our harris dna group 8.   lunenburg co, va deed book 5, page 346, robert wade buys land from samuel harris, executor of the estate of adlar david, decd, of lunenburg co, va, being daniel jagger's patent of 1742 and by him willed to david and richard powell, jr who sold the land to adlar david, 100 acres north of difficult creek and south of stanton river, on a line of a tree planted by william irby and adler david, 1749, 1750. wit: hampton wade; richard ellis. 3. i would also like to reply to pat and e.w. re info they have posted re this robert harris, sr/ jr and richard harris in hanover co, va but before i do this, as again, this is all quite involved, i want to thank mary june for asking about me recently.   as i have already emailed her, i am just very busy with my own family here these days.   however, when i have had a chance, i still continue to look at and to study all of this and, in fact, i was just fixing to come on and post further info re this redding blocker enumerated adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter, per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga, which show that these connections also go back to this same lunenburg/ halifax co, va area and involve the same rickman family, who were also involved with the william harris/ wife, elizabeth, or jane, who pat seaver and sandy hart of harris dna group 30 are interested in as being their harris ancestor.   again, this is also defintely a puzzle to me why we, per our interest in our harris families, would  have such an involved and mutual interest in these same individuals and families, which, of course, includes peter hudson, sr and his family.   to me, there must be some answers to this but before i post that info, i want to talk again about this info that pat and e.w. just posted re this richard harris, and william harris, etc, there in hanover co, va, which i have also talked  about in the past.   in particular, and to sort of sum this up re these connections, as, again, this is  very involved, i want to deal in particular with this 1735 hanover co, va processioning record which pat just posted which involves this william harris and richard harris with this robert wade and ralph hunt, etc.   these were the same robert wade, sr and ralph hunt, who also moved to or had connections also to lunenburg co, va.   again, this was ralph hunt's son memucan hunt, who married mary wade, daughter of robert wade, sr, and this info has been documented and can be found on line.    memucan hunt was also involved there in lunenburg co, va with samuel harris and they are shown to have had a patent there together.   this is shown to have been the same samuel harris, who william harris/ judith hudson sold land to there in 1750 in lunnburg co, va and who continued to be involved with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley in this halifax co, va area.  again, john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley also moved to laurens co, sc by 1770 and continued to be involved with my harris and goode family there.     memucan hunt also became the guardian of sylvanus walker, jr, who was actually the son of tandy walker/ judith langford, who both died ca 1750 there in lunenburg co, va.   this was also the same sylvanus walker, jr, who also moved to laurens co, sc and, again, who was also involved with my harris family and these same families there.   sylvanus walker, jr was one of the appraisers of my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate.   lunenburg co, va deeds show that sylvanus walker, jr was involved there with charles allen, sr and james burton, sr, whose son thomas burton also moved to laurens co, sc and land that my charles harris/ jane cannon owned in laurens co, sc also involved sylvanus walker; lydall allen; and thomas burton.   memucan hunt moved to granville co, nc and deeds involve him there with this grassy creek area.  this same samuel harris, who, again, is indicated to have been the same samuel harris, who became col samuel harris and rev samuel harris also preached at this grassy creek baptist church and this is stated to have been his related harris family who were members of this grassy creek baptist church.   of course, samuel harris, as rev samuel harris, stated that he was born in 1724 near the pamunkey river in hanover co, va.   again, i have a lot more to say and/ or to repeat but i think these connections are important and they need to be looked at again and that any and all of this info re our interest in our harris families needs to continue to be looked at and to be studied.   our harris dna has changed and will continue to both change and hopefully clear up things that have been written and thought in the past that have been and are now in error but, again, it seems to me that we can also continue to look at and to try and make sense of what we do know or think we know and what these records do show and indicate.     belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] James Harris of Louisa Co. - Son-in-Law of Major Robert Harris
    2. I am sharing with Harris-Hunters (and other researchers) this information. Correctons, and a few additions, are solicited. Please give dates and places, if at all possible. I do not know who the parents of this James Harris are. He married Mary Harris, daughter of Major Robert Harris of colonial Louisa Co. Can you add any *evidence*? Harris does not sound like a Huguenot name to me (keep on reading), but perhaps his mother may have been of that group--centered largely around Manakin Town in Goochland Co. Many of the descendants of Major Robert Harris married into families of Huguenot descent. For example, John Jouett, Maupin, later Chenault, et al. REQUEST: If you use this material in your own genealogy program--or wherever you keep your ancestral trails--please include the citations, insofar as I have included them. I was careless when I first began my searches, some decades ago. As Elizabeth Shown Mills has written: *The validity of any piece of evidence cannot be analyzed if its source is unknown. Citing a worthless source is an effort that produces worthless results.* (Elizabeth Shown Mills, Evidence: Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian [Baltimore, MD; Genealogical Publishing Co., 1997], p. 13 Incidentally, one of the sources cited below is Rev. Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia, full citation given in material below. Although his work is useful, particularly the appendices, which material seems to be from county records, as far as the Harrises are concerned, he *dumped* several different Harris lines together, which can certainly lead a Harris-Hunter astray. Use his work as a source, but since genealogical material is more readily available these days, check out his statements. Submitted by E.W.Wallace Rev Jul 2007 JAMES HARRIS of ALBEMARLE. By 1751 James Harris was a son-in-law of Robert Harris, as demonstrated in this abstracted deed: Louisa Co. DB A-443 21 Oct 1751 Robert Harris of Fredericksville Par., Louisa Co. For Natural Love and affection to my son, Christopher Harris, and son-in-law, James Harris, to son Christopher Harris: Negroes Jimmy, a man; Millington, a boy; Abby, a woman. To son-in-law, James Harris: 2 negro girls, Janney and Henriette. /s/ Robert Harris. Wit: Thomas Perkins, Tyree Harris. 22 Oct 1751 Acknowledged by Robert Harris. (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS A & B, 1742-1759 [Manchester, MO: 1977] p. 69) According to Dr. Malcolm Hart Harris in A HISTORY OF LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA, "Appendix", p. 356, James Harris was of Huguenot Ancestry "and they (Mary Harris and her husband James Harris) reared their family in Albemarle." My comment: Since James was of Huguenot ancestry, it is unlikely he was of the same lineage as Mary Harris, daughter of Major Robert Harris, who was a vestryman in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co. However, possibly he was a cousin of Mary's. At a vestry held for Fredericksville Parish 25th day Octo 1758: Ord. that James Harris and Gabriel Maupin do procession all the lands on North side the Buck elbow to the Extant of the County [Louisa?] and so all along the Ridge of the Mountains to the Coty. line Northward down the County line to where it crosseth Doyls River down the same to Moremans River up Moremans River to Danl. Maupins Junr. and so to the Lower Point of the Bucks elbow. (p. 61 of Vestry book) Ordered that the Several Processioners do begin to Procession the first Munday in December next if fair and if not the next fair day and to make return to the Vestry by the last day of March next. (Rosalie Edith Davis, FREDERICKSVILLE PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1742-1787, Vol. I [Manchester, MO: privately printed, 1978], pp. 85.) From Fredericksville Parish vestry book, p. 118, 13th day of Nov 1783 at Charlottesville: Ordered that James Harris, John Mullins, John Maupin & Martin Gentry do possession [sic] the Land Beginning at the fork of Moormans River, thence up doyls River to Harrises Road, thence up to the Widow Harrises Quarter, thence straight to the Top of the Great Mountains thence along that to the Ridge that Comes down to the fork of Moreman's River thence down that River to the Beginning. Brown, deced, bequeathed to his son Barnard Brown. In Oct 1773, John Burk & Feba his wife of Augusta Co. to James Harris 331 acs., Albemarle Co., on both sides of South Fork of Rockey Creek. (Sparacio & Sparacio, ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS 1772-1776) A neighbor was Mosias Jones, who is probably the man of the same name who removed to Madison Co., KY. Another neighbor was Henry Bunch. The witnesses were Jonas Cabe, William Crawford, Robert Harris. According to Rev. Edgar Woods, ALBEMARLE COUNTY IN VIRGINIA [Bridgewater, VA: C. J. Carrier Co., 1900], p. 221, Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Major Robert Harris and Mourning Glenn, married William Crawford, one of the witnesses above llsted.. She was the mother of William H. Crawford, United States Senator from Georgia, minister to France, secretary of the Treasury under Mr. Monroe, and a prominent candidate for the Presidency in 1824. p. 221, James Harris died in 1792. He and his wife Mary had ten childen [nine are named in the 1792 will]: Thomas, Joel, Nathan, James, Lucy, the wife of Thomas Grubbs [more likely the wife of Higgason Grubbs, later of Madison Co., KY], Mourning, the wife of Cornelius Maupin, Sarah, the wife of James Harrison, Susan, the wife of Nicholas Burnley, Ann, the wife of a Haden [probably Anna], and Jane, the wife of a Dabney. (Some genealogists dispute the genealogies put forth by Rev. Woods. Neither a Jane nor a female Dabney is named in the will of James Harris. Either may have died without issue.) Woods adds more information about the children, but his history will not be repeated here. An abstract of the will of James Harris of Albemarle Co. is this: Harris, James 5 Feb 1792 Sept 1792 Sons: Thomas, Joel, James, Nathan. Daughters: Ann Haden, Mourning Maupin, Sarah Harrison, Susannah Burnley and Lucy Grubbs. Wife Mary Harris, all land not bequeathed to son Thomas Harris, land adjoining Capt. Robert Harris, dec'd. Exrs: sons Joel and James. Wit: B. Brown and William Spears (Page 165) (J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS OF WILLS, INVENTORIES, AND ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY 1748-1800 [Beverly Hills, CA 1940], p. 38) Marriage Records It is probable that the James Harris mentioned in these marriage records is the son-in-law of Robert Harris and Mourning Glen, being married to their daughter Mary Harris, as indicated in Malcolm Hart Harris, A HISTORY OF LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA, "Appendix", p. 355. More research is needed. According to his Albemarle Co. will, he died before September 1792. The daughter Lucy Grubbs probably was the wife of Higgason Grubbs of early Madison Co., KY. Grubbs, her husband, seemed to be a land speculator in Kentucky as his name appears many, many times in the deeds of early Madison Co., KY. A fuller abstract of the will of James Harris is given in "Dabney Family" in EDWARD PLEASANTS VALENTINE PAPERS, Vol. I, pp. 396-397. That abstract of WB 3-p. 165 gives the names of multiple executors: "wife Mary; sons, Thomas, Joel and Nathan Harris. " Witnesses were Bernis Brown, Wm. Spears, James Reveley. The will was dated 25 Feb 1792 and was proved September court 1792. These marriage records, taken from Albemarle Co. Hist. Soc Papers, V. 6, "Some Albemarle Co., VA Marriage Records" MAY pertain to one of their children, but more likely the bride is a granddaughter of the elder James Harris and his wife Mary: Item No. Dt of Bond Groom & Bride Sureties 54 12/23/1783 David Owen Mary Harris (spin.) James Harris dau. of James Harris Rev. Woods states that James was a son of Robert Harris, but this may be in error; he more probably was a son-in-law, having married Robert Harris's daughter, Mary Harris. Thomas m. Susan Dabney. Joel b. 25 Apr 1761, m. Ann Waller, d. 31 March 1826. James b. 7 July 1766, m. Mary McCulloch, d. 1830 Nathan b. 1771, d. 1852, m. Ann Allan Anderson. Lucy, the wife of Thomas Grubbs [error?]; Malcolm Hart Harris says she married Higgason Grubbs, moved to Kentucky. (Early Madison Co., KY deed books tend to verify this marriage. Harris does not list any dates.) Mourning, the wife of Cornelius Maupin Sarah, the wife of James Harrison Susan, the wife of Nicholas Burnley Ann, the wife of a Haden. (Hart calls her Anna and states she married 1st William Dabney and 2nd Anthony Haden). Jane, the wife of a Dabney. Joel was appointed a magistrate in 1801, and in 1811 he was Commissioner of the Revenue for Fredericksville parish, which office he held until his death in 1826. Three sons were born to Joel and his wife Anna: Ira, Joel, Clifton. Woods gives information about the son Ira and Nathan. (Source: Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia [Bridgewater, VA: C. J. Carrier Company, pages 221 and 377) The fact that the children in this family married into the same families as the children of Christopher Harris and as his siblings and ancestors leads one to believe that James Harris may have been a cousin of Mary Harris his wife and probably was a member of the extended Harris family of Albemarle, Louisa, Hanover and surrounding counties. **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar.
