E.W. Wallace, The reason why I asked about Joel Harris is the only person who matches my son's "John Harris"DNA. b 1780, is a descendant of a Joel Harris born in 1794 in KY. They match 64 out of 67 markers, group 17.so there is not any doubt they are pretty closely related. I feel they are probably brothers, but neither the man who entered his DNA nor I have been able to find their parents. My son's John Harris's tomb stone in Richmond, Madison, KY, gives his birth as 28 Nov 1780 and death 13 Aug 1849 in Richmond, Madison, KY. As we genealogist know, sometimes you have to follow a sibling to find the right family. We have talked about John before, but I thought I would put it out there just in case someone else might see a connection. I hope you have a great holliday. Keep some of yourself to share with us Harris-Hunters. E.W.Wallace Oh, yes, it seems that Joel Harris may be the son of James Harris and his wife Mary Harris. The wife/mother was a child of Robert Harris and Mourning Glen, according to info I have. EWW Here is some roundabout info. If you are reading/acquiring some Madison Co., KY deeds, you no doubt will stumble over some of these names. LUCY HARRIS. (Living in 1792) Lucy Harris, wife of Higgason Grubbs of Madison Co., KY, was the child of James Harris and his wife Mary Harris, the latter daughter of Major Robert Harris of Louisa and Albemarle Cos., VA. This is according to page 526 of Hazel A. Spraker in The Boone Family. Lucy Grubbs's identity is confirmed in the Albemarle Co., VA will of her father: Harris, James 5 Feb 1792 Sept 1792 Sons: Thomas, Joel, James, Nathan. Daughters: Ann Haden, Mourning Maupin, Sarah Harrison, Susannah Burnley and Lucy Grubbs. Wife Mary Harris, all land not bequeathed to son Thomas Harris, land adjoining Capt. Robert Harris, dec'd. Exrs: sons Joel and James. Wit: B. Brown and William Spears (Page 165) (J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS OF WILLS, INVENTORIES, AND ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY 1748-1800 [Beverly Hills, CA 1940], p. 38) Lucy and her husband Higgason Grubbs appear in some of the first court order books of Madison Co., KY, as early as 1789 before Kentucky became a state. Refer to Family History Library film 183,274 Lucy was of age to marry in 1790 KY MARR RECS, p. 92 . Research, Acc., UT, Orem Source Information........ LUCY HARRIS II. We do not know the identity of Lucy Harris II, who married William Jones 1 Feb 1790, Madison Co., KY, Christopher Harris, bondsman. There is no doubt a relationship, but we do not know what it is. Refer to Christopher's will which does not mention a Lucy Jones as a daughter. We believe the bondsman is the younger Christopher Harris, as the elder Christopher was now deceased. Possibly this Lucy Harris is a daughter of the younger Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY. In a message dated 11/20/2008 5:57:17 A.M. A few days ago I submitted some notes on a Joel Harris and stated I did not know his parentage. (Search the rootsweb archives for Harris-Hunters, if necessary.) I think [never sure in genealogy] I may have discovered that he was a son of James Harris of Albemarle Co., VA and his wife Mary Harris. The latter--the wife and mother--was the daughter of Robert Harris and Mourning Glen[n?] of Louisa Co. and sometimes of Albemarle Co. (colonial era) Corrections and additions are invited. At least, he was not named in the Madison Co. will of Christopher Harris ca 1796-98. Madison Co. COB B, 2 August 1796: On the motion of Higgason Grubbs it is ordered that it be certified to the auditor of publick accounts that proof was made to the court that five hundred acres of land given in the name of Joel Harris was also given in by James Berry. John Harris, son of Christopher Harris, was married to Margaret Maupin. Robert Rodes may have been related to John Rodes who was married to Sarah Harris, a sister of Christopher Harris. John Berry, perhaps related to James Berry mentioned in the deed, was married to Elizabeth Harris, and Robert Harris gave consent to her marriage on 12 Apr 1797, Madison Co., but the relationship of Robert Harris to Elizabeth is unknown. Confession: Being curious about Joel Harris, I did a google.com search just now for Joel Harris + Madison County, Kentucky [lower case OK], and I have *lifted* the paragraph at the end of this e-mail from a long list [with a LOT of notes] of Harrises of Madison Co., KY, many of whom MUST have been born in or near Albemarle Co., VA. Another confession: I do not know to what source the reference at the end of the paragraph refers. I believe the John Harris to whom Joel grants power of attorney is a son of Christopher, probably by his second wife, Agnes McCord. After Agnes was widowed, she granted power of attorney to John Harris to take care of estate matters in Albemarle Co., VA. To muddy the waters further: Higgason Grubbs was of or near Albemarle Co., VA, but apparently was a land agent, as his name--and that of his wife Lucy [Harris] appears many times in the grantor index of Madison Co., deeds. An e-mail correspondent wrote this in 2001: Higgason Grubbs married Robert Harris's cousin Lucy Harris. Lucy was a daughter of James and Mary Harris. Witnesses: John Stanley, > William Harris, > and Jane Harris. Recorded Feb. 19, 1784. I don't know who Jane Harris was, but William Harris was still married to Elizabeth when he sold his Halifax Co. property in 1798 prior to moving to Patrick Co, VA (via Stokes Co, NC). There were two men named William Harris in Halifax Co. during the same period. The Personal Property Tax Lists show that one lived in the North District, and the other lived in the South District. All of the names listed in the deed cited above can be shown by various Halifax Co. records to have lived in the North District in the vicinity of Difficult Creek. The William Harris who lived in the South District had property in the vicinity of Tobey Cr, Mirey Cr. and the Medway River; I've seen no record that ever showed him in association with any of the names mentioned in this deed. William Harris (Halifax Co-North District) did have a granddaughter named Jane, but she was born @1787. Perhaps she was named for the Jane Harris who witnessed this deed. there are many of these rootsweb family tree sites showing that averilla barton, who married sergant griffin, 1/2 brother of rosannah griffin blocker and her sister celia barton, who married william cannon, were the daughters of benjamin barton/ dorcas anderson of spartanburg and pendleton cos, sc. instead, i am going to post the info by cecilie gaziano, who descends from carter cannon, brother of william cannon/ celia barton, sons also of her russell cannon, brother of our richard cannon/ elizabeth cole, sons of our simcock cannon/ jane rudd. the only correction to this list, thus far, is that this sterling cannon once believed to be a son of our related william cannon/ celia barton is not his son and this was also confirmed by our cannon dna. again, charles frederick mc laughlin, who married dorcas cannon, daughter of william cannon/ celia barton, was the son of our john mc laughlin/ sarah goode harris, sister of our charles harris/ jane cannon. again, redding blocker, son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin, was enumerated adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter, per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga, and this was his mother rosannah griffin blocker's 1/2 brother sergant griffin, who married averilla barton and who was the sister of celia barton cannon, wife of william cannon. again, i consider all of these connections, which i have talked about and which i agree are very involved, to be important and relevant connections. again, i am also interested in the complexity of how this was my/ our harris and cannon families involved, as shown, with the blockers/ griffins/ rickmans are indicated to have also been involved with this william harris, wife, elizabeth, who pat seaver and sandy hart believe is their harris ancestor, etc. again, i think there must be answers to our involved, mutual interests but, for now, i just do not know what they are? this is from post # 4299 on the cannon forum by cecilie gaziano and also see post # 4417. I have compiled a list of 16 children. I have not tried to prove this information because William is not my direct line (his brother Carter is). There may be one or two who don't belong, but for now, this is what I have: 1. William CANNON Col. (b.1779;d.1843) sp: Cecelia or Cecilia "Selah" BARTON (b.1786;m.1801;d.1840) 2. William's family was in the 1810 and 1820 Pendleton District, SC, censuses, and in the 1830 Tuscaloosa Co., AL, census, in addition to the 1840 Kemper Co., MS, one. # there are a couple of final things i also want to mention. our john and sarah goode harris mc laughlin moved by 1820 to franklin co, tn and by 1830 to perry/ marion cos, al where they both died there. info shows that by 1850, redding blocker had also moved to marion co, al. i do not know whether he had any connections there with our john and sarah goode harris mc laughlin in this same area of al or not but it would be interesting to know this? redding blocker's family are shown to have married into the cantrell family and to have also moved to the itwamba co, ms area. again, our charles harris/ jane cannon is on the 1850 itwamba co, ms census with their sons: richard harris; ransom b. harris; and cannon harris. again, i also do not know if the cantrells, etc, were involved with our charles harris and his sons in this itawamba co, ms area either? to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910
per the info william griffin/ sarah kirksey/ elizabeth stroud, who was the grandfather of redding blocker enumerated adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter, per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga, was the son of richard griffin/ mary green also of lunenburg co, va. if this were the case, then, these connections re the griffins and hudsons would be a lot more relevant and involved, but since i cannot confirm this, i will not talk about these potentially also relevant griffin connections, etc, in this area. i do have more to say, however, about these griffin connections with our harris and cannon family, etc, there in this laurens/ pendleton cos, sc area. again, my arch harris is shown to have married my/ our elizabeth carter ca 1826 even before our harris and carter families left this laurens co, sc area. her father, my robert carter, jr, stated, per a voter's registration oath in 1867 in paulding co, ga that he was born august 5, 1780 in laurens co, sc. our robert carter, jr was involved with the 1828 laurens co, sc estate of his nephew robert carter, son of his brother, zimry carter. an item from this robert carter's 1828 laurens co, sc estate papers states that our robert carter, jr had moved "leaving his receipts with zimry carter which were examined in january of 1830." this shows that my/ our robert carter, jr did not move to gwinnett co, ga until probably the latter part of 1829 and the 1830 census for gwinnett co, ga shows that my arch harris/ elizabeth carter were living in proximity to him and that they already had two children by 1830: their oldest daughter, rachel caroline harris b ca 1827, later married in paulding co, ga zachariah austin; their oldest son, william "abraham" harris b ca 1829, married before1850 in paulding co, ga mary cohran, daughter of john cohran, sr, and our abraham harris died in 1860 in cleburne co, al. my arch harris/ elizabeth carter's son, my g-g-grandfather james harris/ anne cooper was born ca 1831 and he died in 1872 in paulding co, ga. there are laurens co, sc deeds that connect our charles harris/ jane cannon with the same pinson and puckett families, who were also involved with our robert carter, sr and jr in laurens co, sc and info which also shows that our charles harris was one of the sons of our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, who died in 1799 in laurens co, sc. the only persons i have found interested in our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers in laurens co, sc was that i corresponded early on in my research in laurens co, sc with mary mc laughlin aikman, whose ancestor john mc laughlin married before 1800 laurens co, sc sarah goode harris, sister of my/ our charles harris/ jane cannon. what was also interesting about this is that this was also mary's john and sarah goode harris mc laughlin's son, charles frederick mc laughlin, who married 1st in perry co, al serena tubbs; married 2nd in kemper co, ms her dorcas cannon, daughter of william cannon/ celia barton. her william cannon was the son of russell cannon, who we now know for sure and has been confirmed by our cannon dna, was the brother of our richard cannon/ elizabeth cole, who were the parents of our jane cannon harris. her russell cannon and our richard cannon were the sons of our simcock cannon/ jane rudd. this was also celia barton cannon's sister, averilla barton, who married sergant griffin, who was the also the son of william griffin by his 2nd wife elizabeth stroud and who was the 1/2 brother of rosannah griffin blocker and whose son redding blocker was enumerated, again, adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga. here is info from a rootsweb post re the stroud and griffin families showing that sergant griffin married averilla barton. here, again, are the halifax co, va deeds showing that this william harris, wife, elizabeth, who pat seaver and sandy hart are interested in as being their harris ancestor, was also involved with this same rickman family there in halifax co, va, and which pat seaver had posted previously. again, this is certainly both relevant and also amazing to me that this is/ was the same rickman/ blocker/ griffin family also involved with my harris and cannon familes. i cannot think that it is merely coincidence that redding blocker, who would have been the great-grandson of edward kirksey/ rebecca rickman, daughter of this thomas rickman of halifax co, va, was adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter, per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga. so, here, as i say, are the halifax co, va deeds which pat seaver had posted previously re her interest in this william harris, wife, elizabeth, who were also involved with the rickmans and the hudsons there in halifax co, va. There was also a William Elizabeth Harris in Halifax Co, VA with a wife named Elizabeth: Halifax County, VA Deed Book 12 p. 310 30 sep 1782 from William Harris of H, to Nathaniel Vasser of H, for 500 £, about 100 acres in Halifax, and bounded by Nathaniel Frances, William Harris, Oliver Prindle. (William and Elizabeth Harris gave their consent for Barnard Harris to marry Anne Askew 3 dec 1786 Halifax Co, VA) pat seaver wrote---a trail of other land records leads me to believe that the William Harris of the above cited deeds is the same as the one named in the following deeds: Halifax County, VA Deed Book 11 p. 154 19 nov 1778 from Thomas Tunks of H to William Harris of Amelia county, for 350 £, 400 acres in H, and bounded by William Bolling’s Path. Signed Thos. Tunks. Wit John Coleman, Abram Legrand, Mordecai Rucker Recorded 19 nov 1778 (Bolling's Path was located in the vicinity of Difficult Creek, according to Roger C. Halifax County, VA Deed Book 11 p. 281 9 mar 1779 from Stephen Jones of H, to William Harris of H, for 190 £ about 300 acres in H on Difficult Cr, bounded by the lands of Morris Campbell, Stephen Wade, Charles Stokes, said William Harris. Signed William Harris Wit Robert Rickman, John Harris, Nathaniel Vasser rec 18 apr 1783 (my note----the following deed seems to indicate that this william harris', who was also involved with the rickmans, etc, that his wife was named jane----not elizabeth. so, was this a different william harris from the william harris, wife, elizabeth, and/ or who was this jane harris?) 1783 Nov 5 - Halifax Co., Va. - pg 395- A deed from Oliver Pringle of Halifax to Josiah Strange of Lunnenburg County for 70 pounds 200 acres in Halifax bounded by Morriss Cammill, Robert Rickman, John Rickman, Elizabeth Stokes, John Harris, Nathaniel Francis, Nathaniel Vassar, and William Harris. Witnesses: John Stanley, William Harris, and Jane Harris. Recorded Feb. 19, 1784. pat seaver's post continued: There are numerous Halifax Co. records of this William Harris, who apparently came to Halifax Co. about 1778 from Amelia Co. and then sold property to various other former Amelia Co. residents. Records also show that William and sons Barnard and Elijah moved to Patrick Co, VA in the very early 1800s, where William died @1816. Based on the fact that this William Harris lived until about 1816 and had a son (Barnard) born about 1768, I estimate William's DoB at between 1725 and 1748. I am interested in any information about William's pre-Halifax Co. connections and how he might have been related to James Harris, John Harris, Oliver Pringle and Nathaniel Vasser, all of Amelia Co. Nathaniel Vassar is said to have been the son of Abraham and Rhoda (Harris) Vassar and to have married Sarah Hudson, d/o Peter and Mourning (Hill?) Hudson, Jr. I believe that William Harris of Amelia/Halifax/Patrick Co. was too young to be Rhoda (Harris) Vassar's father. Pat Seaver again, what is of interest to me, other than i am interested in my william harris, sr/ frances goode being the son, william, of william harris/ judith hudson, who was the daugher of peter hudson, sr and who were all also there in this same lunenburg/ halifax cos, va area, is again why it is that we share such an involved, mutual interest in these same families, which now includes this same rickman family, etc. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
the actual halifax co, va will of thomas rickman can be found on the rickman forum post # 553 and, as also shown, his estate was appraised by peter hudson and edward parker. this would have been peter hudson, jr and this edward parker is indicated to have been the husband of sarah hudson parker, sister of judith hudson harris, daughters of peter hudson, sr, who are named as his daughters in peter hudson, sr's 1752 halifax co, va will. as i have just shown again, my arch harris/ elizabeth carter was enumerated adjacent redding blocker, per this 1834 cobb co, ga state census and, per the info, redding blocker's 1st and 2nd wives were harrises, probably sisters, who were also probably related to our arch harris but, again, i do not know how? then, per the info, redding blocker was the son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin of edgefield co, sc. again, per info i posted recently, michael blocker and daniel mckie, jr were purchasers at ellis palmer's 1800 edgefield co, sc estate sale and ellis palmer was the brother-in-law of our simcock cannon, grandfather of our jane cannon harris. i will not post ellis palmer's estate sale again or the info showing that ellis palmer was the brother-in-law of our simcock cannon, but rosannah griffin blocker was the daughter of william griffin/ sarah kirksey, who died in 1800 in pendleton co, sc and who had re-married 2nd elizabeth stroud. here is a copy of the pendleton co, sc will of william griffin showing that rosannah griffin blocker was his daughter. Will of William Griffin: Anderson Co. SC Book A, Page 3, Roll 221 Wife: Elizabeth Griffin. Sons: John Griffin, Henry Griffin, Sergeant Griffen, Creswell Griffin. Meroney, Christopher Kirksey, Thomas Hunt, Andrew Townyhill, Charles Morgan. Date: 5 Oct. 1800. Probate: 14 Oct. 1800. Researcher for this family is: Don Holland at [email protected] Change Date: 12 Sep 2006 at 16:34:28 rosannah griffin blocker's mother sarah kirksey griffin i recently noted was the daughter of this edward kirksey/ rebeccah rickman, daughter of this thomas rickman who died in 1761 in halifax co, va. again, this is the same rickman family who were also involved with this william harris, wife, elizabeth, or jane, also in halifax co, va and who pat seaver indicates is their harris ancestor. also, again, like my william harris, sr/ frances goode and, of course, william harris/ judith hudson, this william harris, wife, elizabeth, are also shown to have had connections with peter hudson, sr and his family. here, to follow, is the info, and this info is not only somewhat indefinite here, but needs to have had strategic commas, showing that rebeccah rickman kirksey was the daughter of this thomas rickman, who died in 1761 in halifax co, va, and that rosannah griffin blocker, wife of michael blocked, was his granddaughter. From: < [email protected]> Subject: A Genealogical Puzzle Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 11:54:57 -0800 Hoping for some good advice on how to interpret the following: Thomas Rickman wrote his will in March of 1761 in Halifax Co, VA. In it he names the following "to my sons Gideon, Christopher, and Isaac and my daughters Sarah and Rebecca one shilling starling each. To my son John Rickman one shilling starling . . . my son Robert Rickman . . . my grandson Robert Rickman . . . rest of the estate to be sold and divided equally between my son Robert Rickman's children and my daughter Mary Hudson's children" Seems pretty straightforward on determining relationships, but here's the monkey wrench: In a court case in Chatham Co, NC in February 1800, I find the following: "Gideon Kirksey, legatee of Rebecca Rickmond alias Kirksey, Edward, John, Sarah, and Isaac Kirksey heirs of Isaac Kirksey (dec'd) and his wife Mary, and John Griffin, Poel[?] Breayeal and his wife Rebeccah, Michael Blocker and his wife Rossey Kennon Breayeal and Healey his wife, heirs of William Griffin and his wife Sarah (dec'd) do nominate and appoint our trusty friend Christopher Kirksey our lawful attorney . . . for collecting and receiving every of our parts or claims that we have against the estate of said Rebecca Rickman alias Kirksey (dec'd) . . ." I read from a genealogy newspaper column that when a person's name was recorded as "somone alias someone else" in colonial times, the term was used to denote an illegitimate child or stepchild. Is this the case here? Others looking at this are saying Rebecca Rickman alias Kirksey means she was a Rickman prior to her marriage to a Kirksey. Wouldn't the term be "nee" instead of "alias" if that was the case? Or were the terms used interchangeably? Based on these two records, how would you interpret the relationships? Thanks for any and all help. [email protected] to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-----26910
here again is part of this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga which shows that our archibald harris/ elizabeth carter was enumerated in-between redding blocker and ester/ esther harris, who, again, i have never been able to identify. i do want to say more about others of these also on this census also in proximity to my arch harris/ elizabeth carter. as also shown, per this census, our arch harris/ elizabeth carter were also enumerated in proximity to william price and joseph murdock. again, our jane cannon harris obtained a war of 1812's widow's pension re our charles harris in 1872 in paulding co, ga and it was this same william price's wife, nancy price, and his brother john calvin price and who in 1872 were living in haralson co, ga, who gave the affadavits, stating that our charles harris and jane cannon were married in 1807 in pendleton co, sc. this joseph murdock married in 1829 in habersham co, ga celia ann cannon who was the younger sister of our jane cannon harris, children of our richard cannon/ elizabeth cole. also, as shown, per the following info, both this stephen dale and (mrs) daniel reed also enumerated in proximity to my arch harris/ elizabeth carter were, like our robert carter, jr and our jane cannon harris, charter members of the concord baptist church in 1832 in cobb co, ga. in 1832, my robert carter, jr; his 2nd wife, sarah mc daniel carter; and our jane cannon harris were charter members of the concord baptist church in cobb co, ga. my/ our robert carter, jr was the first church secretary. the info i am going to cite is from: Concord Baptist Church: One Hundred Fifty Years of History by Concord Baptist Church Historical Committee; published: 1982 Concord Baptist Church was the first church of any denomination to be constituted in Cobb Co, GA------as an arm of the Nance Creek Baptist Church of Dekalb Co, Ga. there were seventeen members in the original congregation who worshipped in a log cabin schoolhouse located about two miles west of Smyrna at the site now occupied by Crossings Shopping Center at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Concord Road. the seventeen were: Robert Carter; Sarah Carter; Benjamin F. again, pat seaver, sandy harris, james hargraves, bill harris and i share an uncanny interest in our respective harris familes and these same families not just in this same lunenburg/ halifax cos, va area, but also much later in cleburne co, al, etc. i also noted this was even more involved when i began to study more about this redding blocker, who was enumerated adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter per this 1834 cobb co, ga state census. to sum up, as i have a lot to post in regard to this. per the info, redding blocker was the son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin, who died in edgefield co, sc and her father william griffin died in 1800 in pendleton co, sc. her father william griffin's 1st wife, and mother of rosannah griffin blocker, was sarah kirksey, daughter of this edward kirksey and rebeccah rickman, daughter of this thomas rickman who died in 1761 in halifax co, va. this, as shown, per the halifax co, va deeds posted by pat seaver, was the same rickman family involved also there in halifax co, va with this william harris, wife, elizabeth, who she believes was their william harris, who had moved there from amelia co, va. so, again, how interesting and involved all of this is re our interest in our harris families and these same families. again, as shown, per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga, my archibald harris/ elizabeth carter was enumerated in-between redding blocker and this ester/ esther harris, who i have never been able to identify. per the info both redding blocker's 1st and 2nd wives are said to have been harrises, probably sisters, and that redding blocker was the son of michael blocker/ rosannah griffin of edgefield co, sc and that this was her father william griffin, who died in 1800 in pendleton co, sc. one of the things i recently posted, but will not repost for now, is that michael blocker and daniel mckie, jr were purchasers at ellis palmer's 1800 edgefield co, sc estate sale. again, ellis palmer was the brother-in-law of our simcock cannon/ jane rudd, father of our richard cannon/ elizabeth cole and grandfather of our jane cannon harris. in regard to our charles harris/ jane cannon and daniel mckie, sr, again, per laurens co, sc deeds i have also posted in the past, land that had belonged to our charles harris/ jane cannon later belonged to daniel mckie, sr and this was the same land that had involved a suit with thomas burton, son of james burton, sr of lunenburg co, va. again, this was thomas burton's sister agnes burton, who married in lunenburg co, va james hudson, son of peter hudson, sr. again, i am thinking that there must be answers as to why we would have such an involved, mutual interest re our harris families and these same families in these same areas. i do not know the answers to this now but i am going to post, though, what i have noted further in regard to these connections and, hopefully, one of these days we can learn why and figure this out. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
Hi James, Thank you for the prompt assistance you gave me regarding my Harris ancestors. And thanks to several others who replied to my posting to the newletter. I have much to follow-up now. It is so easy to get in a rut in one's approach to researching family history. I can't tell you how bad my head hurts at times while trying to sort out the Harrises in Virginia. Ooooooooooh my goodness! I honestly believe it is all a conspiracy, these Harrises didn't want to be found! LOL! :) My few years spent in researching has left me still feeling like a novice (which I am). I wish I could learn it all faster! My thoughts go back to all the people I could have contacted for help and information, but now they are gone. It is a lesson learned the hard way! However, it is very encouraging to know that there are many people in all parts of our country that are so willing to be of assistance. Thank you all for your patient help!Woodrow Harris [email protected] From: [email protected]: Mon, 17 Nov 2008 18:50:33 -0500Subject: Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris LineageTo: [email protected]; [email protected] Woodrow Harris, For the past 15 years or so, most of the people you mention in your message have appeared in the printed newsletter of Harris Hunters or on this Harris Hunters forum. I must tell you however, that there has been much controversy in the past concerning the early part of the Harris lineage in your descendants list. There are many different opinions regarding the descendants of Sergeant John Harris, although there seems to be no question as to the ancestors of Sergeant John Harris, based on the excellent research of the late Noel Robertson and her conclusions are believed to be accurate by most true Harris researchers. It is true that Sergeant John Harris had a son Thomas, the oldest child, some say born 1614 or 1616, but there is overwhelming evidence that Thomas Harris' only sons were John and Thomas and he had 5 daughters, but no son named Edward. John, the son of Thomas had 9 daughters, but no sons. Thomas, the son of Thomas had 6 sons, as Edward, Thomas, Benjamin, Stephen, John and Robert, and a daughter Mary. It has been reported in some old publications that Thomas Harris, 1616-1672 was the father of Thomas Harris, ca.1630-1688, but based on wills and land records of early Virginia, this claim has proven to be untrue. The Thomas Harris, died 1688 did have a son Edward and there was an Edward Jr., son of Edward. There are other Harris forums, such as "Harris"; "Harris DNA"; "Harris-GenForum" and "Harris-Rootsweb", and I think there is a "Harris-Colonial Virginia". None of these are as active as Harris-Hunters, but do discuss many different branches of Harris. Hope this helps. Sincerely, James E. Hargraves Harris DNA Group 30. pat in my still reviewing the info on this samuel harris, wife, ann and this james roberts, jr, also there in lunenburg co, va, i realized i had talked about and posted a good bit about this previously which i just did not remember. hopefully, i am not totally losing it but that, again, it is that my focus is really on my own family these days or also i have posted a lot and it is hard to keep up with all i have posted. so, i am going to sum this up based on what i have already posted in the past. based on what i re- note in regard to these connections in regard to this samuel harris, wife, ann, it would seem to me that they are related harris family. besides their involvement there with this james roberts, jr, which i will say more about, and the claibornes, they are also involved there with gideon moon and lodowick farmer. gideon moon's family inter-married with the same jeremiah glenn/ anna blagrave family, etc, who were also involved there with my harris family not just in this lunenburg/ mecklenburg co, va area, but also into laurens co, sc. same thing re lodowick farmer, he married into the same thweatt/ gilliam/ isbell families, again, not just involved there with my william harris, sr/ frances goode, but also with edward harris, sr's family and, again, these connections also continued on into laurens co, sc. in regard to the roberts family, info indicates, per the info and these lunenburg co, va deeds, that james roberts, jr was related to this william roberts also of lunenburg/ halifax cos, va, who were the sons of this james roberts, sr of new kent co, va. it was this william roberts daughter mary ann roberts, who married richard shackleford, and moved with him and other of her roberts family also to laurens co, sc. again, as i have posted in the past, my mackerness goode, sr's sons, our samuel goode and mackerness goode, jr sold their land in laurens co, sc to richard shackleford. my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers was enumerated adjacent richard shackleford per the 1790 census for laurens co, sc. again, my william harris, sr/ frances goode, per this 1796 laurens co, sc deed re my william harris, sr/ frances goode and my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, did not die until 1796, but my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers is the only william harris on this 1790 laurens co, sc census. so, again, i do not know where my william harris, sr/ frances goode was in 1790 or where he died in 1796 but it was not in laurens co, sc. again, based on the connections there in lunenburg co, va and on into laurens co, sc, the info indicates to me that this samuel harris, wife, ann, are/ were related harris family. however, i have also been surprised in regard to these connections. again, pat seaver, sandy hart, james hargraves, and bill harris, who are all part of harris dna group 30, and i share an uncanny interest in these same families not just there in this same lunenburg/ halifax cos, va area, but also much later in cleburne co, al. so, until we can find harris descendants of these harris lines and families to hopefully participate in the harris dna project, like this samuel harris, wife, ann, we just do not know for sure. again, i just keep thinking also---- why it is that pat seaver; james; bill, sandy, and i would have such a strong interest in our respective harris families and these same families in these same areas? to me, there must be an answer to this? it would seem, perhaps, that our families, although not related themselves, may have related connections. again, there is the harris; jefferson; osborne; goode family also from henrico co, va into this same area of va and who also moved to laurens co, sc, etc. i know i have asked this before---- but has someone from this harris/ jefferson/ goode, etc, line been definitely identified and tested? belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910

For years, I have subscribed to Ancestry's newsletter, which is FREE. Some very good ideas and techniques have been suggested over the years. Here is a recent one by the editor. I hope she doesn't mind my cutting and pasting. Perhaps some of you can reward her by subscribing to the FREE newsletter, which generally comes weekly. E.W.Wallace At the end of the long newsletter this week is this info. "The Ancestry Weekly Journal" is a free service of Ancestry.com. It is available to all registered users and members. Accustomed to figuring out problems in her head or on a separate piece of scrap paper, she turned in her first homework assignment only to get it back with points taken off because she didn't show her work. She was crushed. I tried to explain the rationale behind the grade and the importance of showing her work. It was a tough lesson for her but something that she'll need for years to come. And if she chooses to follow her mother's footsteps (Hint!), showing her thought process will be a huge help when applied to family history. When I started writing for the newsletter, the benefits of writing about my genealogical finds became immediately clear. I'm notorious for scribbling cryptic notes in the heat of the moment. Too often, I have made an exciting discovery only to go back to it weeks or months later scratching my head and wondering what the heck I meant. "Corn, fruit, Bkln. 1850?" Is that a grocery list or something to do with my family history? As it turned out, it was a note about a probate to remind me that there was a Cornelius Kelly who had a fruit stand in Brooklyn in 1850--but that's a story for another day. Fortunately, when I slip up I can sometimes find a paper trail in the form of an article I have written about the find. But that's not always the case, so I've since expanded the process of "showing my work." Now, when I dive into my family's history I journal during the process. This gives me an extended research log, and I've also learned over the years that the best way to find holes in my theories is to try to write about them. (Unfortunately, some of my best theories seem to self-destruct when I'm up against a deadline.) What to Include Here are some of the items that I include in my research journal: -- How and where did I find the information? What searches did I perform during online research? How was the name indexed? Were there any irregularities or discrepancies? I also record times where I've failed to find an ancestor. I document the various methods I used to search, and include why I think they should be included in that record collection. Sometimes this step is very revealing. It makes me look closely at descriptive materials and sometimes I realize that there's a very good reason they aren't included. -- What was the extent of my search? Did I just search the index? Did I go all the way to the end of the register or microfilmed or digitized collection to see whether there were more records at the end? Did I browse surrounding pages (and how many), looking for other family references? -- When possible, I like to include a transcription of the record. It makes for easy review and this can also be copied/pasted into my family history software, family timelines, and e-mails to family history buddies. -- Sometimes a record may not come right out and say something, but alone or in the context of other records, it may allow you to draw conclusions. This is a great place to spell out the rationale behind any conclusions you have drawn. For example, you have an 1860 census record that says that your eleven-year-old ancestor was born in Ireland. You also have a baptism record for his sister that says she was born in 1852 in New York. From these you can estimate that the family immigrated to the U.S. somewhere between 1849 and 1852. If you spell it out here, you won't be scratching your head a year from now trying to figure out how you arrived at that estimate. -- Put yourself in your ancestors' shoes. Has something in this record changed your perceptions about the family and what was going on in their lives? What part might history have played in what you've learned? Did they emigrate because of war, disease, or famine? Spell out your theories. -- Sort out conflicting facts. Did the information in the record conflict with what you had previously thought or with what you have found in other records? Is it possible you are looking at two separate individuals or families? How can you reconcile the conflicts? How credible is the record you are looking at? Document the conflicts and look for ways you can prove or disprove your findings. -- Chart your course for follow-up. Look at what you've written and make a list of follow-up steps you can take to move your case forward. Your Journal's Format My process is simple. I just have an open journal (a.k.a., Word document) for each person in his or her folder on my computer, and when I work on that line, I open it up, type in the date, and create my summary using some or all of the above criteria. Mine is free form, but if it's more helpful to you, you could easily create a template to use each time, then go through and fill in the blanks. There are other options available that would work well too. A blog is a perfect forum for this type of journal and allows you to share easily with the entire blogosphere. People with whom you are collaborating can easily be kept up-to-date, and you may even hear from a long-lost cousin who happens across your blog post. With a category set up for each person, it makes a great chronological research journal where you can easily review your research process over time. Hosting services like Blogger.com (http://www.blogger.com) and LiveJournal.com (http://www.livejournal.com) make it simple to create your own blog. You don't need a lot of technical expertise to get it up and running. You could also use your genealogical software and use the notes section or task list to record your thought process. What Else? It's a good idea to journal your findings right away--immediately after the happy dance if possible. You want the facts to be as fresh in your mind as possible. Try not to get sidetracked and immediately enter the follow-up frenzy. (I know--that's a tall order for me too.) But if you haven't written about previous finds, pull out your research and start your journal with a review. It's a great way to jump-start research that you've been away from for a while. With all that is available online, it's really easy to get into the habit of just adding stuff to your tree without really looking at it. Take the time to really get into the record you have found and explore it by journaling it. In addition to the benefits above, it's a great way to go back and see how far you've come! ____________________________________________________________________ Juliana Smith has been an editor of Ancestry newsletters for ten years and is author of "The Ancestry Family Historian's Address Book."
