Sure would like to know the connection. My e-mail is [email protected] Paul R. L. Vance then, the following post also shows paul r. l. vance's interest in the price family also significantly involved with our charles harris/ jane cannon and my arch harris/ elizabeth carter from sc on into ga. this post can be found on the cannon forum # 2942: posted by Paul R. L Vance: Help!! I am researching the Price family that came from SC to Carroll Co., GA in the 1830's. Exploring the connection between the Prices and the Cannons, and Harris of Pendleton. Jane Cannon and Charles (Charley) Harris were married in Pendleton in 1807/1808. Over 60 years later, in 1873, Nancy Price and her brother-in-law, John C. Price made affidavits that they were at the wedding of this couple, or in the case of John C., knew that they were married. I do not know who their parents were. I do know that the Nancy Price that made the affidavit was living with her husband, William Price, were in the 1810 census of Pendleton. I am working now on the theory that there was some family connection between the three families in order for them to still be in touch some 65 years later. Might not be a connection but it seems more than possible. Anyone searching these families or have any suggestions for me. # per the 1810 census pendleton co, sc, william price/ nancy were enumerated in close proximity to our richard cannon, father of our jane cannon harris. again, our richard cannon, brother of russell cannon also near him on this 1810 pendleton co, sc census, were the sons of our simcock cannon/ jane rudd. i think these are interesting connections and i agree with paul vance that it is significant for william price/ nancy to have been involved with our charles harris/ jane cannon and our cannon family in pendleton co, sc and that quite a number of years later william price's wife, nancy, and his brother, john calvin price, would give these affadavits in ga re our charles harris and jane cannon being married in pendleton co, sc again, also interesting that paul r. l. vance would be interested in this same isaac morris also involved with robert harris and robert depriest in hanover co, va and, then, again, also with our price/ harris/ cannon families from pendleton co, sc on into cobb/ paulding cos, ga. belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910

again, like carol's thomas harris, patte wood's ancestor stephen davis was also involved with the same robert harris and the depriest family there in hanover/ amelia/ prince edward cos, va. as also shown, per patte wood's posts, patte is also interested in the morton family of prince edward co, va who were also involved with harris family in charlotte co, va. this is the same morton family, who were also involved with my simcock cannon, grandfather of my jane cannon harris, wife of my charles harris, also in prince edward/ charlotte cos, va. again, my charles harris, son of my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers, who died in 1799 laurens co, sc, son of our william harris, sr/ frances goode, who were in lunenburg co, va by 1746, married our jane cannon in 1807 in pendleton co, sc. here is the info from patte wood: May 7, 1770 Wm Epperson from Charles Harris 2 290 Charlotte County, VA 160 acres head branch of Wards Fork originally purchased from Joseph Morton by Harris. Also, Carlos Wood, son of Joseph Wood and Martha Epperson married a Glassery/Glaffery Bailey 1798 in Charlotte county. Her sister, Polly, married Robert Harris, son of Capt. Robert Harris in Charlotte County 6 June 1803. Polly Harris is mentioned as recently deceased in a letter from Carlos Wood to his daughter Mary Venon Wood in 1828 shortly before he died. (william harris/ judith hudson also had a son robert harris but how or if this captain robert harris of charlotte co, va was related to their son, robert harris, i do not know.) If you find information on this Harris family or any Morton/Davis/Wood/Epperson or Watkins families, please let me know. Stephen Davis's heirs ended up living near John and Joseph Morton's families in families in Prince Edward and Charlotte counties. I also have an Elizabeth Davis marrying a Morton that I have not been able to connect to yet. In our family the name Davis or James Morton Wood was commonly given as well as Elizabeth Crenshaw Davis but I have not found a Morton or Crenshaw direct link. Patte Wood # again, in regard to the crenshaws, this was our william harris/ mary giles' brother edward harris, who was the guardian of david alvis in hanover co, va. this david alvis was the son of george alvis and his wife, mary, said to have been a crenshaw. george alvis, who had previously also remarried alice, widow, of our major william harris of henrico co, va, was the step-father of our william harris/ mary giles and his brother, edward harris. here is the info also showing that my simcock cannon was also involved with this same morton family also there in prince edward co, va. per amelia county road orders book 1735 -1753 by nathaniel mason pawlett, on may 17, 1751, O.S, page 322, page 72 of 157: simcock cannon; ellis palmer; isaac chandler; and john morton are ordered to assist in clearing a road from atwood's plantation on bryery river to roanoke road and ambrose eastis, surveyor of same. again, ellis palmer, who married ann rudd and who was the brother-in-law of my simcock cannon/ jane rudd, died in 1800 in edgefield co, sc. again, purchasers of ellis palmer's estate sale there in 1800 in edgefield co, sc included daniel mckie, jr and michael blocker/ rosannah griffin, whose son redding blocker was enumerated adjacent my arch harris/ elizabeth carter per this 1834 ga state census for cobb co, ga. surely, these are, indeed really involved and interesting connections. belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
here are the deeds again involving carol's thomas harris and this stephen davis with this robert harris and the depriest family. again patte wood, who descends from this stephen davis, who, again, like carol's thomas harris and this robert harris, were involved with the depriest family, is also interested in her wood family, the morton family of prince edward co, va and harris family also of charlotte co, va. Carol wrote: What happened to that Falling Cr. P.E. Robert Harris sold this land to Stephen Davis, who, at some point between the initial deed where Robert Harris sold the land to Thomas Harris and the final deed, obtained the land from Harden (named in the initial and second deed) Also, according to the deeds, the north fork of Falling Creek is, in the final deed, referred to as Lockett's Creek. He then married Mary (maiden name unknown) about 1690. Robert was a French Huguenot and immigrated to Virginia before 1689. The earliest mention of him in Virginia is found in the S. Peter's Parish Vestry Book when the land of Robert DePresst was among the property to be processed. Based on the date of immigration, he was probably among the group of Huguenots sent to the New World by the British government to quiet unrest in England over the Huguenots who had arrived from France taking prime English jobs. The location of his birth is unknown, but he probably came from the south of France where several villages were designated "free cities" for Protestant worship by the Edit of Nantes. Robert DePriest most likely left France for England in 1685 when the Edict of Nantes was revoked and violence broke out against the Huguenots. Robert DePriest settled in New Kent Co., VA and by 1704 he owned 354 acres of land (VA 1704 Quit Rent Rolls for New Kent Co.) The early records of the DePriest family are contained in the St. Peter's Parish records. When St. James' Parish was formed from St. Peter's Parish, Robert Depriest's land fell into the new parish. Later his land would fall into the newly created Hanover County. At the time of his death, the DePriests lived on or near the Pamunkey River, near the present day boundaries of Hanover, New Kent and King William Counties. Robert DePriest is one of approximately 450 people whose origins have been proved to the standards of National Huguenot Society and all of his descendants are eligible for membership in the Society. i was actually looking for further info on the davenport family, which led me to info on the depriest family and i noted something interesting that i do not think we have noted or talked about before. this george sutherland, jr both witnessed and paid the security re samuel harris' will in 1799 in pittsylvania co, va. again, this was the same samuel harris, who william harris/ judith hudson sold the island/ plantation to in 1750 in lunenburg co, va, which was witnessed by john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley and william hunt. ----the same samuel harris, who was on the 1748/ 1749 early lunenburg co, va tithe list along with william harris/ judith hudson; my william harris, sr/ frances goode; my mackerness goode, sr; peter hudson, sr; john wilborn, etc, and all in cornelius cargill's district, which is the area that became halifax co, va. -----the same samuel harris, who, then, per the lunenburg co, va deeds i have cited in the past, continued to be involved with john cargill, sr/ rachel tinsley in this halifax co, va area and who, like my harris and goode family, obtained these ca 1770 grants in laurens co, sc where they continued to be significantly involved with each other there. -----the same samuel harris, who married lucy camp, who became col and, then, the noted baptist minister rev samuel harris, who stated that he was born in 1724 near the pamunkey river in hanover co, va and who died in 1799 in pittsylvania co, va. i have noted, then, per info on the depriest family, that this george sutherlin/ sutherland, who, again, both witnessed and paid security re the will of samuel harris, is definitely indicated to have been the same george sutherland, who married mary depriest and who died in 1804 also in pittsylvania co, va. mary depriest, per this info on the depriest family, was the daughter of william depriest/ judith randolph, son of robert depriest, wife, elizabeth, of new kent/ hanover cos, va. again, carol barron's ancestor thomas harris is a harris dna match with our harris dna group 8 and carol's ancestor thomas harris of st martin's parish, hanover co, va was, along with this stephen davis, were also involved with this robert harris and the depriest family. patte wood descends from this same stephen davis and besides her interest in stephen davis, patte is also interested in the morton family of prince edward co, va, who was also involved there with my simcock cannon, grandfather of my jane cannon harris, and also this captain robert harris in charlotte co, va. to be continued: belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910

Dear Wanda, See subject above. The discouraging words: I think you are going to have to do a good deal of research. My main Harris family of Albemarle Co. had left for Kentucky about 1786. The family of the James Harris-Mary Harris couple, whose will I believe I quoted [abstracted, of course] do not match your folks. Some suggestions: 1. Make out some time lines for these men, in order to keep them straight. In the timelines, note where they lived [the watercourse is a good pointer here] and with whom they associated. Some of the land records may give you some ideas of their associates. These were frequently in-laws, cousins, etc., or soon would be.!!! 2. If you cannot devote the time to reading the microfilms, which you probably can borrow from either the Library of Virginia or from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, you may have to ask the help -- and pay a fee or a healthy donation -- to the Albemarle Co. Historical or Genealogical Society. (I have had some wonderful results from such societies, but occasionally you meet a rebuff, especially in sparsely populated counties, which Albemarle is NOT [Univeristy of Virginia and Charlottesville, of course]. 3. If you can read the films, you may want to examine these records: a. Probate and guardianship records b. Land records - Most of our Virginia folks, at least the ones who left wills, generally had land and slaves. These were of value, and then the deeds may treat of the distribution of the property. These actions may take YEARS after the death, unless the children were all adults. Some might have lived out of state, and getting them together to distribute the property [or sell it] may take years. In some states, the indexes--grantor and grantee indexes-- alone have given me wonderful clues. And in general, because these deeds are still being used today, particularly by title searchers, the indexes are typed and alphabetized. Find the surnames of the family members, and if you find a notation beside the name *&c* or *Hrs.*, these deeds need further investigation. *&c* refers to *others* and Hrs = heirs!!! Those heirs may have come from North Carolina, from Tennessee, from Kentucky, and later from Missouri, etc. 3. Tax lists - many of which still exist. 4. Court records. Sometimes these will lead you to proper deeds. And sometimes people show up in court records or tax records but not in deeds nor probates. Genealogy is a tough hobby, but it does get in your blood after a while. You always want the answer to the next question which pops up in your mind. It may take decades to find the answers. Harris-Hunters are good, but... Example: I am going to a *show and tell* & potluck meal tomorrow about English and other UK & Irish ancestors. It has taken me decades to discover WHERE in England my maternal great-grandmother was a beerseller. The 1901 c ensus was released a few years ago, and here she pops up in a county where I had never looked and about my now deceased English cousins knew nothing--except a photo. I contacted the Record Office in that county and determined that they would do research for me, and would accept Master Card!!! So I did not have to make a trip to England to find this material. And, with my luck, the records are seldom where I anticipate it MAY be. Some counties in England have several record offices. And then they move!!! I wish you lots of luck with your more recent James Harris. A Harris-Hunter E.W.Wallace **************One site has it all. Your email accounts, your social networks, and the things you love. i do not know who mary harris was, or her parents, who married augustine davenport, except i note also that a number of these rootsweb site show that she was the daughter of willliam harris/ henrietta baker, including this post by cynthia harris osborne. i have tried for years to get in touch with cynthia harris osborne. cynthia harris osborne descends from our charles harris/ jane cannon's son cannon harris, who married 1843 in benton, now cleburne co, al, frances poss. mickey woods, who descends from our arch harris/ elizabeth carter's daughter elizabeth harris, who married his obadiah hooper in 1865 in cleburne co, al, learned from cynthia harris osborne that this was our charles harris/ jane cannon and their 3 sons: her cannon harris; ransom b. harris; and richard harris, all living adjacent each other, and this jasper wright, on the 1850 census for itawamba co, ms. our jane cannon harris was not with our charles harris. instead, she is on the 1850 census for paulding co, ga living adjacent or near our james and lucinda harris carter. james carter was the son of my/ our robert carter, jr and brother of my elizabeth carter harris. again, this was richard harris' 2nd wife, emeline ingram wright harris, widow of jasper wright, and her daughter hannah jane wright by jasper wright, who gave the affadavits in 1872 in cleburne co, al, stating that our charles harris died in 1865 in greene co, arkansas. mickey woods had corresponded with cynthia harris osborne several years before he corresponded with me. since mickey did not have a copy of our jane cannon harris war of 1812 pension papers re our charles harris, etc, he could not make sense of what cynthia was saying to him. so, they did not continue to correspond. again, by the time, i tried to correspond with cynthia harris osborne, i could get no reponse from her per any of these posts she has put on line per these rootsweb sites, etc. i cannot say myself that because john davenport was a purchaser at my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale that his brother augustine daveport's wife, mary harris, was related harris family. i also cannot say just because cynthia harris osborne descended from our charles harris/ jane cannon's son cannon harris and she also shows an interest in this augustine davenport/ mary harris, again, that mary harris davenport was related harris family. i just do not know. what is needed, of course, like any of these harris lines we are having confusion about is to find actual harris descendants of these harris lines and families to be tested in our harris dna project. here, to follow, is the post by cynthia harris osborne showing, as i say, her interest in augustine davenport/ mary harris: The Tennessee Campbell Clan Entries: 93370 Updated: Mon Sep 1 01:57:33 2003 Contact: Cynthia Osborne Home Page: The Tennessee Campbells Welcome to the Tennessee Campbells and the NC Harris Family Index | Pedigree | Ahnentafel | Download GEDCOM | Add Post-em ID: I043649 Name: Mary Harris Sex: F Birth: 10 Feb 1728/29 in Hanover Co., VA Death: 1819 Father: William Harris b: 1724 in Ann River, St. Pauls Parish, Hanover Co., VA Mother: Henrietta Baker b: ABT 1722 in Hanover Co., VA Marriage 1 Augustine Davenport b: 1728 Married: ABT 1738 in St. Martins Parish, Louisa Co., VA belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
this is a reply to donna re her interest in her jesse harris involved with augustine daveport/ mary harris in rowan co, nc. these were augustine davenport's/ mary harris' brothers, john davenport and thomas davenport, who also moved to laurens co, sc and john davenport was one of the purchasers at my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale. these were the purchasers of my/ our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale and, again, as shown, the purchasers included john davenport: mrs (frances) harris; john harris; thomas harris; william harris, III, and our charles harris/ jane cannon, except they were not married until 1807; john mc laughlin; james vance; luke dempsey; thomas cargill; john davenport; and our john rodgers, esq. per the info, this john davenport and his brother thomas davenport, who also moved to laurens co, sc, were the sons of william davenport/ ann arnold, son of martin davenport. the info shows that john davenport, his brothers, thomas, and augustine davenport and their father, william davenport/ ann arnold, trace back, like the hendrick family, to what is called the pamunkey davenports. the following is from a site re the pamunkey davenports: Davis Davenport and his son, Martin, were both on the "Quit Rent Rolls" of 1704 in Virginia. Davis owned 200 acres, and his son Martin owned 100 acres. Their land was between the North Anna, or Pamunkey River and the head of Herring Creek. It was on about the line, of the later Caroline County. Davis is mentioned in the will of Martin, his son; in which "100 acres of land left to me by my father, Davis Davenport", is passed on to Martin's son, William. Davis had two other sons besides Martin; Thomas and Richard, and a daughter, also. Martin Davenport -(c1675-1735) was born in King William County , Virginia He died in Hanover County in Virginia. Land records of February 27, 1727 show that he purchased 400 acres of new land on the South side of the North Anna River, at the mouth of Little Rocky Creek. It was near the present town of Beaverdam, Virginia. again, the info shows that john davenport, who died 1807 laurens co, sc and who was a purchaser at my william harris, jr/ frances rodgers 1800 laurens co, sc estate sale, was the son of william davenport/ ann arnold and that this augustine davenport, who married mary harris, was his brother. also, per the info, this was his cousin john smith davenport who married lucy barksdale, sister of nathan barksdale, who married mary allen, sister of charles allen, jr/ lucy bacon smith, children of charles allen, sr of lunenburg co, va. again, it was charles, jr and lucy bacon allen smith's daughter mary/ polly allen, who married ca 1795 laurens co, sc our john l. harris, brother of my charles harris, sons of my/ our william harris, jr/ frances rodgers. the following info re william davenport/ ann arnold showing that they had sons: john; thomas; and augustine davenport, who married mary harris, can also be found on a pamunkey davenport site: 10. William DAVENPORT was born about 1715 in King William Co., Virginia. He died in 1798 in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. William DAVENPORT and Anne ARNOLD were married about 1735 in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. William DAVENPORT and Anne ARNOLD had the following children: +66 i. [--?--] DAVENPORT. +67 ii. Mary DAVENPORT. +68 iii. Martin DAVENPORT. +69 iv. James DAVENPORT. +70 v. Augustine DAVENPORT. +71 vi. Sarah DAVENPORT. +72 vii. John DAVENPORT. +73 viii. David DAVENPORT. +74 ix. I would like to ask Group 6 to look at this information and see if they have any connections. (note from Peggy Hill from the William Harris/Mary Hudson family) From: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) <_mailto:[email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) > Subject: Re: [VALOUISA-L] William Sharpe Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 19:16:35 EDT Hello, >From the book, "The Baker Family of England and of Central VA and their many related families and kin" , compiled by William Thomson BAKER, Sr, (native of Louisa County, VA), 1974 is the following: Part 1, page 38: ........... William BAKER b @1710 had by his wife Susanna, a daughter Anne Baker, b Nov 1737 m 1761 William Pettit, Jr. They were the parents of.............. Samuel Baker Pettit, who in 1789 married Temperence Harris SHARP, daughter of William Sharp by his wife, Temperence Baker, daughter of Martin Baker of Hanover and sister of William BAKER of Cub Creek, Louisa County, VA >From Part 1, pg 40: "Walter Garland DUKE in his comprehensive genealogy ..........with some account of several hundred central VIrginia families says that Martin BAKER III of Hanover County had eight children and that he was born in Hanover about 1715-1720, died in 1786-1788, that he was very wealthy, executor's bond when his estate was settled being fixed at $100,000. Seven of his children are listed as follows, but not in order of their birth:----- 1. Martin BAKER married Elizabeth SWIFT 2. William BAKER married Mary WALTON 3. John BAKER married Nancy HARRIS 4. Samuel BAKER married Temperence HARRIS 5. Mary BAKER married John WALTON, Jr. 6. Temperence BAKER married William SHARP 7. Jemima Keziah BAKER married Thomas LANE The descendency of Temperence BAKER and William SHARP were not chronicled in the book. The BAKER family of Louisa County was a pretty tightly knit group. I go back on the HARRIS line that figures prominently with the BAKER surname. I daughter out with the marriage of Susan HARRIS, daughter of William HARRIS and Elizabeth BURNETT to John GUNTER. I hope this has helped. This was taken from a book, and thus further documentation never hurts for sure. The book is a good guide. :)) It is still available to my knoweldge. Anyone interested please email. Connecting families with the surname BAKER in this book are: THOMSON. GOODWIN, LIPSCOMB, ELLIS, BOXLEY, MANSFIELD (6 chapters), TANDY, MASSIE, HARRIS, GRAVES, BURRUS, WOOLFOLK, FARRAR, CHILES, DANIEL, QUISENBERRY and the SWIFT-DUKE families. Peggy in CA Now, the thought is that William Harris married Henrietta Baker, daughter of Martin Baker who we see in those 1734 deeds with William, Richard, James, Robert and Robert, Jr. Can we separate the William Harris/Henrietta Baker from the William Harris supposed Elizabeth/Henreitta Burnette? If the William Harris/Mary Hudson family is showing Group 8 ties, we need to look at the family connections. (Is that Pettit or Pettus?) Pat **************One site has it all. The location of William Hendrick/Hendricks in these documents is about the only clue that might lead to who these people are. He held borders with both Group 2 family of Nathan Harris/Sarah Knight and was also possibly near the William Harris/Mary Hudson who I think lived near Contrary Creek, which was also near Fluvanna at times. The changing county borders don't help locate these people. James Harris/Betsy Pharis are DNA Group 10, and his supposed birth ca1733 (?) does not fit the deed of 1724, so we need earlier people to fit a James Harris with wife Elizabeth. In addition,we are missing the orphans of Richard Harris who died ca 1735 or so. There does seem to be a second Richard Harris nearby after the death of the first one, so tentatively I am giving him Richard Harris, Jr. and working from there. Knowing that these families often had very close family ties and married cousins consistently, I have been able to connect the William Harris/Mary Hudson line to the Group 8 line of John Harris m to Jane Hambleton. Using this same line of cousins, I find connections to the Thomas Harris/Elizabeth said to be Lindsey line who is supposed to come from William Harris/Mary said to be Giles which, again, is testing to Group 8. The Group 8 line also tended to have multiple births, as did the line of William Harris/Mary Hudson (per the Douglas register record of three of their children's births) which has no male descendants left. There is also an early Robert Harris who only signs with a mark, so he is can't be the surveyor who would have needed to know how to read and write to be a surveyor, and the Robert Harris, Jr. you referenced in the 1724 deed can't be the son of that Robert Harris/Mourning Glenn, because that son is not born until ca 1746 by their records, and falls into DNA Group 6. This doesn't tell you who these people are, but it hopefully says something about who they are not. Pat **************One site has it all.
