    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Trying to Find Links to Previous Residences in Censuses
    2. Richard Price wrote the following: From: "Richard Price" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] George Harris/Warren KY In my search for my George Harris born in KY about 1840's married Ermine E. Edgar. My George Harris had a brother James who was probably younger also of KY. I have never found any KY links to either only her death certificate information found in Colorado in 1918. Is it possible that the George Overton Harris listed below is my George Harris' (est dob of 1840's) father? Response: Richard, I suggest going back to the old stand-by for genealogists -- searching the censuses from 1880 through the 1930 census. The 1880 census--free on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) , I think -- you may be directed to Ancestry.com where it should be free--but may not be--is the first one in which each enumerated person was asked where each of his parents was born. Subsequent censuses also asked this question. Harris is NOT the easiest name to research, I acknowledge. Edgar is less common. I hope you get some clues from the censuses. If you know where in Colorado this family may have been in 1910 census, take a peek at the whole census for that town or county--and see where others were from. Relatives may have moved with them. I hope these later censuses give you some clues about the origins of your Harris-Edgar family. If a county history has been compiled, you may find some clues in that county history. A good many county histories have been digitized and are on such databases as HeritageQuest. Ask if your library subscribes to HeritageQuest. Only libraries can subscribe. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re again carol's thomas harris; robert harris, sr/ jr, etc
    2. again, i cannot tell carol who her thomas harris was as this is something that she needs to conclude and confirm herself.   however, again, per what i have said previously and now also these posts here, the info does definitely indicate to me that this was carol's thomas harris, who was the brother of this robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore and that this was the same robert harris/ elizabeth poore, who kathryn wiggins identifes in her geneagraph as robert harris, sr, who had sons robert harris, jr; harrison harris; and matthew harris, and that this robert harris, sr; carol's thomas harris, etc, were the sons of edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles.   again, robert harris, jr is indicated to have been this robert harris, whose wife, elizabeth, was the daughter of this isaac morris.   again, per these amelia/ prince edward co, va patents, this robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore sold his patent land to his brother, carol's thomas harris and robert harris, jr sold his patent land to his brother harrison harris, who was also the son of robert harris, sr.    thanks, again, to pat for posting this info re robert harris, who along with thomas poore and robert depriest, appraised the estate of this isaac morris and carol's follow-up re the will of isaac morris, showing that both thomas poore and isaac morris' had  daughters elizabeth harris, who, again, are definitely indicated to have been the wives of robert harris, sr and his son, robert harris, jr, which is what made this all come into definite focus.   to me, it is only as we keep posting things and talking about them that things will click and make sense and connections can be seen and made.    again, i hope all of you have a really joyous holiday season and a bright, prosperous new year and especial good hunting and successful conclusions for all of us re our harris families and harris dna matches in the up-coming new year.     sincerely,   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re matthew harris; robert harris, sr/ jr; william harris/ rice family, etc
    2. again, per this geneagraph compiled by kathryn wiggins in 1982 re our captain thomas harris' harris line and family, which can be found in her harris vol/ booklet: granville co, nc, she has that edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, had sons: edward harris; john harris; thomas harris; and this robert harris, sr, who had sons:  robert harris, jr; harrison harris; and matthew harris.     here is info carol also posted previously on matthew harris, who, again, is definitely indicated to have been the mathew harris, who was the brother of this robert harris, jr and their brother this harrison harris.   this info which carol posts re this matthew harris connects him with the same isaac morris who was also involved with robert harris, sr and jr and also connects him with the same rice family also involved with this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va and his sons, sherwood harris; gilliam harris; and his daughter, agnes harris, who married john cawthon.   again, wiggins does not have in her geneagraph that this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va was the son of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, but this is still what this info definitely indicates to me.   again, as i have said many times now, the hanover/ new kent, as well as the goochland co, va records, show that it was edward harris and his family, who were more involved with george alvis, his son, david alvis; the cawthons; crenshaws; and the depriest family.   [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Matthew Harris, Matthew Rice, Amelia County, VA Thursday, September 25, 2008 11:10 AM From: "Carol E Barron" <[email protected]>View contact details To: [email protected] Below is a 1772 Prince Edward Co. deed where Matthew Harris, P.E Co. sells his 100a tract (Sandy River/Sailor Cr) to John Tabb...deed states Matthew Harris rec'd this land from William Rice with a Matthew Rice as an adjoining neighbor....and from what I can find, apparently these Rice men were from Hanover Co. VA with Matthew Rice noted in 1741 Amelia record as being "of St. Martins Par., Hanover Co"..and if we take that time period okf 1741 & add 7 yrs to 1741, we have 23 June 1748 my Thomas Harris & Harrison Harris with back-to-back Amelia Co. deeds & also both of St. Martins Hanover Co. with indentures for Amelia Co. land....we know there was a Thomas Rice who was adj. land owner to a 1723 Thomas Harris Little River patent & William Rice has been mentioned in Amelia deed 26 Nov 1745 below involving several Harris men with David Harris selling to Benjamin Harris, both of St. Martins, Hanover Co. VA.   Anyway, I personally believe we do have some commonality here with Hanover Co. Harris & Rice men and their Amelia Co. lands. I don't know what happened to Matthew Harris after the 1772 P.E. deed & asking if anyone does know where he went...is he the one who left his will (below) in Brunswick Co. 1790?   Matthew 1772 of P.E. Co. must have had a son, Matthew Junr, as in below 1768 P.E. Co. deed, Matthew Jr. also sells his P.E. Co. tract plus another P.E. 1757 record below indicates a son, Daniel.   The Matthew Harris died 1790 Brunswick Co. did not mention sons Matthew or Daniel in his will, but did name sons...Moody, John, Charles, Robert, Benjamin in his 1790 will.  What we have here is a Matthew Harris who shows up in the Amelia tithables as early as 1737 was in the Amelia Co. tithables up to 1752 (Prince Edward Co. formed 1752 from Amelia)...then we have Matthew Harris who sells his P.E. Co. land in 1772 as well as Matthew, Jr. in 1768 P.E. Co. both evidently sold out of P.E. Co. & disappeared from P.E. Co.?    With Matthew Harris being Amelia Co. tithable by 1737 gives us some idea as to his possible age...at least 21 in 1737....= 1716 birth year & perhaps even older. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re also harrison harris louisa/ goochland cos, va
    2. again, there were two robert harrises, who in 1745 who obtained patent land in amelia, now prince edward co, va, who i believe the info shows were robert harris, sr and his son, robert harris, jr and that it was the robert harris, sr, who was married to elizabeth poore, and their son, robert harris, jr, who was married to elizabeth morris.   again, the robert harris, sr sold his patent land on vaughan or falling creek to carol's thomas harris, who is indicated to have been his brother and, again, a number of years later, carol's thomas harris sold this same land back to him or to his son, robert harris, jr, who, then, sold the same land to stephen davis.   then, this is also indicated to have been this robert harris, sr's son, robert harris, jr/ elizabeth morris, who had the patent also in 1745 in amelia, now also in prince edward co, va, south of the appomattox river, adjacent henry chiles and he sold this patent land to harrison harris, who is indicated to have been his brother, who, again, were sons of this robert harris, sr.    then, later harrison harris later sold this land to lewis harris and giles harris, sons of david harris/ jane landy richardson.   according to the info posted by carol, and i do not have the actual deed, this was the same harrison harris, who was also in goochland co, va.   here are other deeds for this harrison harris and it would certainly seem significant to me that this harrison harris was in goochland co, va the same time as this william harris and his sons, sherwood harris and gilliam harris and whose daughter agnes harris married john cawthon.      Source: LOUSIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS C, C1/2, D AND D1/2 1759-1774 Abstracted & Compiled by Rosalie Edith Davis Manchester, Missouri. 1977 Pages 107-112. 13 December 1773. There must be another Humphrey Parrish whom I have not found. The only documented data that I have for "my" Humphrey Parrish line shows that his will was dated April 27, 1773 and proved Sept. 20, 1773 in Goochland Co., VA. In his will, he named his wife Mary (Walker d/o John Walker) and seven children: Joel, Moses, Aaron, Booker, Humphrey, David and William Rutherford the husband of his daughter Ursula. This son, Humphrey Parrish, is also my line. His will was proved March 17, 1823 in Goochland Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Layne in 1751 in St. James Northam (Dover) Church a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ayres??) Layne. It is THOUGHT but not proven that Humphrey Parrish who died in 1773 was a son of Humphrey Parrish whose will was dated Dec. 28, 1740 and proved June 21, 1743 in Goochland Co VA. His wife was named as Mary and daughter Mary and son David. Witnesses were: Henry Martin, John Parrish and Brisse Parrish of Albemarle Co., VA. I would so like to find absolute proof that this Humphrey Parrish was the father of Humphrey Parrish who died in 1773. I am really curious about the Humphrey Parrish data that you have for I never found that in any of my search. The name Humphrey Parrish is too unusual to think that there in not some close connection. Do you have the deeds/wills etc. for the documentation that you found? Please respond with more detail. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re robert harrises/ deeds from captain thomas harris book
    2. these are deeds from the captain thomas harris book, which were posted earlier on our harris group 8 forum also re the robert harrises and these patents but, again, they were not identified.   again, there are the two patents and the two apparent robert harrises, who obtained these patents in 1745 in amelia, now prince edward co, va, and both are shown to have had connections with our captain thomas harris' harris line and family and mainly with carol's thomas harris and/ or this harrison harris.   again, one patent in 1745 was for the robert harris for the land on falling creek in amelia, now prince edward co, va, who is now indicated to me to be this robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore and, again, it was this robert harris, sr,  who sold this patent land  to carol's thomas harris.    again, carol's thomas harris sold this land back either to this same robert harris, sr or to his son, robert harris, jr, who, then, sold this same land to stephen davis.   these deeds have been posted a number of times now recently and i will not repost for now but, again, as shown,  these deeds were also witnessed by the depriest family.   then, there is also the 1745 patent for the robert harris for the 400 acres also in amelia, now prince edward co, va, adjacent henry chiles and this robert harris is indicated to me to have been robert harris, jr/ elizabeth morris, daughter of this isaac morris and who was the son of robert harris, sr and his wife, elizabeth poore, daughter of this thomas poore.    as stated, per the deed below this robert harris, jr sold this land to harrison harris, who wiggins in her geneagraph says was his brother, again, sons of this robert harris, sr.     someone in our harris dna group 8 has already pointed out errors in the book, which i will not go into  but, again, i have said a number of times that the info in it does not exactly agree with my own research.    here again, though, are these amelia/ prince edward co, va patents and deeds for the robert harrises.   1 August 1745, patent book 22, page 355. £2 Robert Harris, 400 acres Amelia County on the south side of the North fork of Falling Creek, adjacent Randolph and Harden. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, volume 5 page 90)     +23 Jun 1748 Robert Harris of Saint Martin Parish Hanover County to Thomas Harris of same county and parish, for £25, 400 acres on south side of the north fork of Falling Creek, bounded by: Randolph’s line, Hardon’s line, down fork. Robert Harris Witnesses: George Harris, Stephen Harris, Harrison Deprieart / Depriest (Amelia County Deed Book 3, page 92)     +1 Aug 1745, patent book 22, page 346, £2 Robert Harris, 400 acres Amelia County on the south side of Appomattox River , adjacent Henry Chiles. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, volume 5, page 91)     23 June 1748 Robert Harris of Hanover Co. to Harrison Harris of aforesaid County for £22 , 400 acres in Amelia County on the south side of Appomattox River, bounded by Henry Child’s (Chile’s) line. Robert Harris Witnesses: George Harris, Stephen Harris, Thomas Harris (Amelia County Deed Book 3, page 94-95)     per info carol posted, and i do not think i have a copy of this deed, the land that robert harris sold to harrison harris was later sold to lewis harris and giles harris, sons of david harris/ jane landy richardson.   i also think that because of this sale re harrison harris to the sons of david harris that it has been thought that this harrison harris was the brother of david harris but the earliest, and it would seem more significant connection, is harrison harris' connection with robert harris, who, again, is indicated to me to have been his brother, robert harris, jr.   again, the earliest connection indicates/ shows that this robert harris, jr sold his patent land to his brother harrison harris, who, as wiggins says in her geneagraph were the sons of this robert harris, sr.   again, this is info carol had also posted earlier re this same harrison harris.   Harrison Harris of Louisa/Goochland Counties had a dau. 2. again, as shown and cited previously, there were two robert harrises, who obtained patents in 1745 in amelia, now prince edward co, va and who are shown to have been involved with carol's thomas harris and other of our captain thomas harris' harris family there.    the info definitely indicates to me that these were the same robert harris/ elizabeth poore and his son robert harris/ elizabeth morris, who kathryn wiggins identifies in her geneagraph as robert harris, sr and his son robert harris, jr, and, who, again, were the same robert harris, sr and jr, who were also involved with carol's thomas harris and who wiggins' say, per her geneagraph, were the son and grandson of edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles.   here are the patents again:    ROBERT HARRIS, 400 acs. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re carol's thomas harris; robert harris, sr and jr, etc, part one
    2. again, carol has to decide and confirm for herself whether this was her thomas harris, who was the son of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles and brother of this robert harris, sr, etc.   this is exactly, though, what this info definitely indicates and shows to me and, again, the key to solving this was to learn who these robert harris, sr and jr were in hanover co, va,  and who were involved with carol's thomas harris and who are definitely shown to have been part of our captain thomas harris' harris line and family.    again, there has been confusion but we now know for sure that they were not the robert harris/ mourning glenn or his son robert harris/ lucretia brown, who are shown to have been part of the captain william harris/ temperance overton harris line and family, which is harris dna group 6.   again, we now know, thanks to pat, per her posting and carol's follow-up that our robert harris, sr and jr, who, again, were involved with carol's thomas harris and who are definitely indicated to be part of our captain thomas harris' harris line and family, would have been this robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore and his son, this robert harris, jr/ elizabeth morris.     again, the info  also shows, that it would have been this robert harris, sr and his son, robert harris, jr, who also obtained these patents in 1745 in amelia, now prince edward co, va, and that robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore sold his patent land to who is definitely indicated to have been his brother, carol's thomas harris and that robert harris, jr/ elizabeth morris sold his patent land to his brother harrison harris, who, again, was also the son of this robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore.   again, i cannot say that kathryn wiggins got all of this right re this geneagraph she compiled but she does seem to have gotten it right re this robert harris, sr and jr and these connections.    what she, again, does not have in her geneagraph is that this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va was  also the son  of edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, but, again, given, as i say, this william harris' connections, like carol's thomas harris, etc, with the same depriest and rice family; the cawthons and crenshaws, who, again, were more associated with george alvis and his son, david alvis, this, who, again, were more involved with edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, is definitely what all of this info shows and indicates to me.   again, this info definitely indicates to me that this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va was also the son of edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles whereas, and, again, agreeing with kathryn wiggins' per her geneagraph, that this was my william harris/ judith hudson of brunswick/ lunenburg/ mecklenburg cos, va who was the william harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles.   again, and as i continue to say, any of this info written and compiled in the past re our harris lines and families needs to be seriously looked at and studied as to what they may have gotten right and what they got wrong and why we think so.   again, these connections also still need to be confirmed by our harris dna project and, hopefully, at some point we are going to be able to find harris descendants, including another harris descendant of my william harris/ judith hudson,  to participate in the harris dna project.   for now, however, i want to finish up talking about what i have noted re these connections with carol's thomas harris with this robert harris, sr and jr and with this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ and goochland cos, va, etc.   to be continued:   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------------26910

Some researchers say that Sarah Harris, wife of George Sr was a Dickson/Dickerson but offers no proof. Before Paul Dafft passed away, he, myself, Larry Harris, Truman and the lady from Lexington KY agreed that there is no doubt that she was a Hudson. One of these days, some of the younger researchers are going to "uncover" all the things we have not been able to find. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Reply to Missing Harris
    2. In reply to E W about my posting on my Kentucky Harris line. First of all, my records are a complete mess!! When I first was bitten by the genealogy bug more than 40 years ago, all my research was done at the McClung Collection in my public library iin Knoxville, Tennessee. And certainly as a novice, so many and most times, I did not site my source of information. Today, this is most apparent as I try to look back and see exactly when my George Harris (b 1750-1755) migtated to Kentucky. He is in the 1810 Warren Co census and his daughter Sarah married Charles Epperson in Lincoln Co KY Jan 13, 1807. Eppersons and Hollands are in the 1810 Warren census. According to my records and the records of the late Paul Dafft, George's daughter, Elizabeth Dickson Harris married Major William Holland Oct 9, 1802 in VA (Louisa, I think). Daughter Frances married Hezekiah Holland, no marriage date. George O Harris Jr (my line) married Elizabeth Holland Apr 5 1813 in Warren Co. So I think by the date of the Harris daughter to Charles Epperson that we can say that they were in Kentucky by 1802. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Sherwood Harris - Several of Them
    2. Dear Eleanor, About your questions on Harris-Hunters: I am NOT going to solve ALL your problem with the several Sherwood Harrises. First, I suggest you do a quick search for Sherwood Harris in the Land Patents on the Library of Virginia website. Here is the URL--but remove the punctuation fore and aft. The oldest patents are at the end of the list. The 1990 and later patents are the first ones listed!!!! _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm) Remove the punctuation fore and aft before pasting into your search blank. Also, have you ever tried to interlibrary loan books through your local library? Get friendly with the local librarian and ask. You need to try to borrow books by Zae Hargett Gwynn who abstracted years ago LOTS of records of early Granville Co.--deeds, estate records, etc. (If you do a search for AUTHOR on the Family History Library Catalog [www.familysearch.org - and click on the Tab labeled Library - I think you will find several of her books on Granville Co. listed.) As far as I know, only one book has been filmed--the one which contains the word Kinfolks. Then you need to try to borrow this book-- Thomas MaAdory Owen, History and Genelaogies of Oldh Granville County, North Carolina 1746-1800 [Greenville, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1993] The second book is a hit or miss book, but there are LOTS of references to at least two Sherwood Harrises To cut out a lot of talk-talk, let us say, there was a Sherwood Harris of Granville Co. who has a will dated 16 June 1763, probated August Court, 1763, in the same county. (I have not copied the abstract by Owen--it is rather complicated.) He names these children: Son - Sherwood - to whom he leaves 160 A.and a horse, bridle and saddle DAu Mary - wife of Absolom Hicks - also land Dau Jemima grdaughter Mary White Dau - Sarah Son - John [relationship not stated] Joshua Hays Wife - Jane Younger children: Ann Sherwood Elizabeth Executors: Wife and brother Robert Harris (Even the abstract is detailed--best you write to Granville Co. or to the NC Archives for copy of the will and the probate, if at all possible.) On page 76 of Owen's book: Marriages Sherwood Harris to Rebecca Wilkins. Bond dated; April 12, 1778. Signed Sherwood Harris (1) Sherwood Harris (2) & Thos. Harris. Wit: P.Henderson (I don't know to interpret this--but I venture to say there are two Sherwood Harrise--one the groom, and the other a probable cousin!!! Why genealogists go crazy!!!) There are many references in the index to the name Sherwood Harris. I am not going to sort them out for you--that can be your fun!!! However, one of these younger Sherwood Harrises is BOUND to be the one who is found frequently in the deed indexes [probably both grantor and grantee indexes] of Madison Co., KY. These indexes are on film at the Family History Library, and you can borrow the films at a nearby Family History Center for a fee, of course. Boonesborough, in Madison Co., KY was the *brain child* of Col. Richard Henderson and his *proprietors*, mainly of Granville Co. and surrounding North Carolina counties. Henderson and his associates were going to set up the 14th colony, but the American Revolution broke out, and some say George Rogers Clark got wind of this scheme and reported it to the Virginia authorities. However, Virginia finally awarded Henderson and company what was later Henderson Co., KY about 1799. (I think Henderson may have died before that date!!!) I do NOT know whether Sherwood Harris is mentioned in the book called Boonesborough by George W. Ranck and which is on the online database called HeritageQuest. Anyway, this is a Filson Club book and pretty well explains Boonesborough--and the Appendices have some wonderful additions. Ask at your Library whether they have a subscription to HeritageQuest. One thing we all have to keep in mind is that brothers named their sons for their father and also for their brothers. So by the third generation in this country, there may be three, four, five men with the same name!!!! I have a John Williams in my ancestry--from colonial Virginia. His son, so called in a deed, was John Williams, Jr. Other documents say the original John had four sons. All four sons had a son named John Williams. Confusing--you betcha!!! And two of the grandsons lived in Granville Co. You may have to make time lines for these fellows. Let us say, as a generality, that lifespan in the colonial days was about 45 years. If your fellow is 70, be very suspicious!!! As I read old newspapers, I am amazed at how many people died by drowning (few bridges--at least when there was a flood). We all know of falls from horses, farm accidents, infections, etc. Eleanor, I hope you sort out all those Harrises. But be assured there were at LEAST two Sherwood Harrises. A lot of people came to early North Carolina from Virginia. If they came from Pennsylvania, as many western North Carolinians did, they probably stayed in Virginia for a time--to grow a crop, let the mothers have their babies, etc. So you have to search both places--ain't genealogy fun!!! E.W.Wallace been there--done that--and made lots of errors along the way!!! **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. When he purchased his first land in Goochland Co. in 1742, just four months after Robert PAGE (R) purchased his, the record gave John's residence as King & Queen Co.. Robert PAGE (R) was a witness to this deed as well as to another deed to John dated two years later. Both tracts of land lay on branches of Lickinghole Creek. In the 10-15 years before John and Robert first appeared here, many famiies from Middlesex Co., VA had migrated to Goochland Co.. It is interesting to note that some of these families acted as witnesses to documents involving the PAGE men in Goochland Co. and, in turn, the PAGEs witnessed theirs. Middlesex Co. borders King & Queen Co. on the north. Familiar names in the Middlesex Co. records that later appear in Goochland Co. are: CHOWNING, DANIELS, GRESHAM, JOHNSON, MOSELEY, PACE, SMITH, THURSTON, TUGGLE (Tugwell), WILBURN, and WILLIAMS, to name just a few. Middlesex Co. was also where an early HEATH family lived. Axol's Swamp was in the part of King & Queen Co. closest to Middlesex Co.. In 1750, John sold his first land (100 acres) to Richard WILBURN, who, as you may remember, was the father of the two WILBURN boys bound out to Robert PAGE after Richard's death about 1759. John purchased two other tracts of land in this county, one of 270 acres in 1751 and another of 100 acres in 1758. In 1761, he made gift deeds of land to his sons, John and William. John received the 100 acres purchased in 1758 and William received the 150 acres purchased in 1744. John, Sr. retained the 270 acres. Son, John, had to mortgage his 100 acres a couple of times and it appears that he eventually lost it as no deed appears whereby he sold it. William evidently deeded his 150 acres back to his father in 1765. Although no record appears in the deed books for this transfer, the court order book shows that Thomas STARKE and Sherod HARRIS proved a deed from William PAGE to John PAGE. It had to be for this land because, in Sep 1767, John PAGE deeded it to Edward SMITH. In the same month, John sold the last of his land in this county (said to be 250 acres) to William BRITT. Because the original deed for this land said it 270 acres, perhaps the land was re-surveyed and found to contain less. He also sold the 150 acres that he had given and received back from his son, William, to Edward SMITH. John's wife, Hannah, released her dower rights to both parcels. Then, the family disappeared from Goochland Co. and later appeared in North Carolina records. During his stay in Goochland Co., John also served as "constable", was on juries, was an Ensign in the militia (1753) and served on the "road gang", both as a surveyor and as a worker. In the latter duty, he was not a convict. In those days, those who lived along or used the roads were charged with the building and upkeep of them. John and Hannah PAGE had the following children: J-1 William PAGE, b. ca. 1731-32. He md. Jean STEVENTON sometime before Dec 1755 when their first child was born. He was first listed with his father in the "Tithable Lists" of Goochland Co. in 1748 and in the deed records in 1765. He can be found later in Pitt Co., NC. J-2 John PAGE, b. ca. 1738-39. He md. Unity HARRIS ca. 1757 as their first child was born in Jun 1758 in Goochland Co.. He was first taxed in his father's household in 1755. John lost the 100 acres that his father gave him there and, after several court cases in which he was the defendant, he left VA and moved to Pitt Co., NC where he was granted and purchased quite a bit of land. J-3 Joseph PAGE, b. ca. 1736-37. He md. Elizabeth STEVENTON on 13 Apr 1758 in Goochland Co., VA (The Douglas Register). He appears in the "Tithable Lists" first in 1760 and last in 1767. In court cases dated 1763 and 1766, when Joseph was the defendant, John PAGE, Sr. gave security for him in both instances. Both cases were later dismissed. The last record of Joseph in Goochland Co. was dated Sep 1767. Joseph's wife, Elizabeth, was no doubt related to William's wife. Joseph also moved to Pitt Co., NC. Some questions remain as to where Joseph was living before his marriage. He was not listed with John, Sr. in the tax lists before his marriage in 1758 as one would expect. However, when his name did appear on these lists, it was in the same district and always next to the name of John, Sr.. J-4 Hannah PAGE, b. before 1743. She md. Sherwood HARRIS on 16 Dec 1761 in Goochland Co.. Sherwood may have been related to John's wife. When his name appears in the tax lists it is next to the name of John PAGE, Sr.. Sherwood ceases to be taxed by 1766. This may have been about the time that they moved to NC. Sherod and William HARRIS were co-defendants in a case of debt in Dec 1763. John PAGE and Joseph HODGES gave security for them. Sherod HARRIS was one of the witnesses to the deed from William PAGE to his father, John PAGE, Sr. in 1765. This deed was not recorded in the deed books, but was proved at court. Sherwood/Sherod and Hannah PAGE may have lived in some other NC county for a while before moving to Anson Co., NC. The courthouses in many NC counties were burned in the 1860's so records of this couple there are difficult to obtain. Another older Sherwood HARRIS also lived in Goochland Co. for a while, but later moved to Granville Co., NC where he died that county in 1763. Sherwood and Hannah had six children, including a daughter Hannah, evidently named for her mother and grandmother. This couple eventually went to Anson Co., NC. Hannah died sometime between 1774 and 1778. Sherwood is reported to have md. again twice and had a second family. His last wife's name was Elizabeth and she may have been the dau. of Sherwood's good friend, William Williams. WILLIAMS is another name that was in both Middlesex and Goochland Cos., VA. William WILLIAMS, in Goochland Co. by 1728 is my ancestor. I do not know if the WILLIAMS mentioned here as a friend of Sherwood HARRIS was related to the Goochland Co. bunch. Sherwood HARRIS died in Anson Co., NC in 1805. Some of the descendants went on to Alabama. Most of my information on the descendants of this couple was contributed by Wm. R. Taylor of Old Lyme, CT. 3. Whoever the Robert Harris (of St.Mar., Hanover Co.) was in 1748 "signing" his name to the Amelia deed to my Thomas Harris, and much later selling that land in 1771 "marking" his name (w/wife Eliz.).....he stayed on the Hanover Co. VA tax lists up to the year 1800, then disappears....now, I'm just making a speculation here as to a couple potentials that could possibly fit this Robert Harris of Hanover Co. and remember, I'm just tossing out ideas as this guy is really a mystery. 1) Robt who married Mezapina....this Robt died (as we know by Louisa Co. records) ca 1799....and do we have a direct descendant from him in our DNA project? I'm unaware of any. 2) We can see a Robert Harris who shows up in the Prince Edward Co. tax lists in 1789 & disappears off the lists after 1796 and looks as tho one Wm Harris was living with him in 1793 and, of course, we know most of these men below are from our DNA Gp 8. 1789 April 8 - Graves Harris- free male tithables Graves Harris, 3 blacks above 16, 6 horses April 30 - Ralph Harris- free male tithables Ralph Harris, 1 black above 16, 1 black between 12 & 16, 2 horses June 1 - Saml Harris- free male tithable Saml Harris, 1 horse June 9 - Robt Harris- free male tithable Robt Harris June 13 - Ann Harriss- free male tithable Claibourn Harris Edm Harris, 3 blacks above 16, 2 blacks between 12 & 16, 3 horses June 13 - Elizabeth Harris- free male tithable John Harris, 2 blacks above 16, 2 blacks between 12 & 16, 3 horses June 15 - Giles Harris- free male tithable Giles Harris, 2 horses 1793 John Bookes District Edmd. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Platt maps
    2. Has anyone done or know where to get plat maps of people who owned properties in Louisa, Hanover, etc counties about 1700 to about 1850? I do have coordinates for the property of Malachi Ware but have no idea where exactly that is (not a surveyor here). I know my Harrises lived on Hickory Creek. Some other areas mentioned are Cub Creek, the Contrary River, etc. It would be nice to have some kind of a reference guide that has owners of properties in and around Louisa in order to help try to figure out who goes with who and the distances involved. I hope I make sense. Had anyone done any of this work or will do research? Peggy in Ca **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re robert harris/ thomas poore/ depriest/ crenshaw part four
    2. again, in the genegraph compiled in 1982 by kathryn wiggins', which, again, can be found in her harris vol/ booklet:  granville co, nc, re the family of our captain thomas harris; his son, our major william harris, wife, alice, who re-married george alvis; their sons, our william harris/ mary giles(?) b ca 1672 and his brother, edward harris b ca 1674-------   wiggins has that my william harris/ judith hudson was the son of our william harris/ mary giles, brother of david harris/ jane landy richardson, etc.   i cannot say that kathryn wiggins got all of this right, per this geneagraph, but i totally agree with her that this was my william harris/ judith hudson, who was the son of our william harris/ mary giles not because kathryn wiggins says so, but this is what my own research, per the records, has definitely shown and indicated to me.    again, the info also shows that it was my william harris, sr/ frances goode who was involved there with my william harris/ judith hudson early in lunenburg co, va and, again, this 1750 dodson survey for this land on wynn creek confirms that william harris/ judith hudson was the father of my william harris, sr/ frances goode.   again, this is also confirmed so far by our harris dna and, again, if another definitive descendant of william harris/ judith hudson can actually ever be found to also participate in the harris dna project, then, i believe that this will also be confirmed by our harris dna.   kathryn wiggins does NOT say in her geneagraph that our william harris/ mary giles' brother, edward harris, had a son william harris.   however,  given this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ and goochland cos, va association with the cawthon family and the depriest family and who are also shown to have been more involved with edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles; george alvis; his son, david alvis; and the crenshaws, again, it would certainly seem to me that this william harris of hanover/ louisa and goochland cos, va was the son of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles.   again, what i have said, and will also continue to say, is that this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va is certainly not shown, per the records, to have been either my william harris/ judith hudson or my william harris, sr/ frances goode, who were in brunswick/ lunenburg cos, va and who were there at a time when this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va was there in hanover, louisa, goochland cos, va with his sons, sherwood harris and gilliam harris and his daughter agnes harris, who is stated to have married john cawthon.   again, it is this william harris of hanover/ louisa/ goochland cos, va, who, like carol's thomas harris,  is shown to have been more involved with the depriest family and also with edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles; the cawthons; crenshaws; as well as with george alvis and his son, david alvis.   to repeat, i cannot say that kathryn wiggins got all of this right about this geneagraph but whether in regard to this geneagraph or any other of this info that has been written about our harris families in the past, and which many times gets repeated whether it is right or not and/ or thought that it is right, etc,  needs to be continued to be seriously studied and figured out and, then, confirmed as to what and is not right about the info.     some times when a piece or even a chunk of the puzzle falls into place as it certainly seems to with this robert harris, sr and jr of st martin's parish hanvover, co, va, indicated, as i say, to have been both the robert harris, sr/ elizabeth poore and robert harris, jr/ elizabeth morris, son and grandson of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, then, hopefully, other of this info will begin to take more shape and fall into place as well.   carol, obviously, i  cannot say if this were your thomas harris, who was the brother of this robert harris, sr, sons of edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles as this is something you need to answer and figure out yourself but, again, this is certainly what this info and connections indicate to me.       belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8--------26910

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re robert harris/ thomas poore/ depriest/ crenshaw part three
    2.  there has been much written about our harris families in the past and as i have said and will continue to say, it is up to those of us who are now seriously researching our harris families and focusing on them to try and figure out what it is that they may or may not have gotten right and why we think they did or did not.   again, kathryn wiggins did a lot of earlier research on the early harris families of va and nc, etc, and in her vol/ booklet of harris papers:  granville co, nc, she compiled a geneagraph re our captain thomas harris' harris line and family and his son, our major william harris, wife, alice, who remarried george alvis, and their sons, our william harris/ mary giles (?) b ca 1672 and his brother, edward harris b ca 1674.   in this geneagraph, she says that edward harris, again, brother of our william harris/ mary giles:  had these children:  a daughter, ann harris by his first wife, mary, and by his 2nd wife, elizabeth:  edward harris; sarah harris; john harris; thomas harris; robert harris, sr, who also had sons, robert harris, jr; harrison harris; and matthew harris.   she also has that it was this robert harris, sr, son of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, who was the same robert harris, sr, who worked as a surveyor for his cousin david harris, who was a land dealer.   of course, this david harris would have been our david harris/ jane landy richardson, who is stated, per a louisa co, va deed, to have been the son of our william harris/ mary giles who obtained in 1725 this land on cubb creek in hanover, now louisa co, va.   again, both  david harris/ jane landy richardson and this robert harris, wife, elizabeth, who was, again, shown or definitely indicated to have been the same robert harris involved there with thomas poore and isaac morris and again, the same robert harris, elizabeth, who sold land to carol's thomas harris, which, in fact, her thomas harris sold back to him and/ or to his son, robert harris, jr, and, then, this robert harris, sr or jr, wife, elizabeth, sold the land to stephen davis.   again, they are all stated to have been of st martin's parish, hanover co, va and these deeds were also witnessed by the depriest family.   in fact, speaking of whether there was both a robert harris, sr, who could have been married to elizabeth poore and who was the daughter of this thomas poore, and a robert harris, jr, who could have been married to elizabeth morris, daughter of this isaac morris, kathryn wiggins', per this geneagraph, does say that this robert harris, sr, who was the son of our edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, did have a son, robert harris, jr.   in fact, again, speaking of these st martin's parish, hanover co, va connections, the louisa co, va land my william harris/ judith hudson, per brunswick co, va  in 1743 sold to stephen harris, this deed also states that this stephen harris was also of st martin's parish, hanover co, va.   so, we have a lot of connections re our captain thomas harris' harris line and family to this st martin's parish, hanover co, va  area and the same individuals/ families there.   the question,  to me, carol, is this your thomas harris, who was the brother of this robert harris, sr, who had sons, robert harris, jr; harrison harris; and matthew harris, and who were the sons of  edward harris, brother of our william harris/ mary giles, according to this geneagraph compiled by kathryn wiggins?   if you do not think so, which is, again, what this info and all of these connections indicate to me, then, why do you say this was not your thomas harris?   to be continued:   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8-------26910
