It is with pride and pleasure that one can recall the life of a nineteenth century teacher who taught for a period of more than fifty years, extending through the seventieth of his life. Daniel Seaborn Harris was born on October 5, 1825, in Green County, Alabama, the son of Sherrod Harris II (1797-1869) and Winnie Wells White Harris (1801-1833). Both parents were of Scott-Irish descent. Sherrod Harris II was a native of North Carolina and a devout member of the Primitive Baptist Church, which he joined in 1832. While a youth, D.S. moved with his parents to a location near Colliersville, Tennessee, where his father built the first church in that area called the "Shiloh Baptist". This church stood until it was destroyed by a cyclone in 1840-43. Shortly after th e Chickasaw Indians migrated to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, Sherrod Harri s II and his family moved to Marshall County, Mississippi. Here they acquired more than 6000 acres of land, and Sherrod II was listed as the second highest  land taxpayer in this county. Winnie Wells White Harris was the daughter of Dr. Samuel White of Union District, South Carolina. D.S. was the second child born to his parents, the first being Tillman Jefferson who was born in 1823. Two years younger than D.S. was Hudson Laben who was born in 1827. A sister, Parmelia (Townsend) was born in 1829, and finally Lucy Miram (Greenway) wa s born in 1832. Tragedy came early in the life of D.S.; for when he was eight years old and his sister Lucy Miriam was only an infant, their mother died. After the death of Winnie Wells White Harris, Sherrod Harris II married Rebecca Kirby of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. To the union were born eight children. These were Maben (1835-?), who took over his father's plantation when Sherrod II retired and moved to Memphis, Tennessee; Norwood (1840-1908/09); Caladonia, who died young; Elizabeth (Betty) (1835-?); John Sherrod (1841-1898); Madison (1842-1901); Mary Rebecca (1846-?); and Julius B. (1848-?). Life must have been interesting and exciting for members of the Sherrod Harris II family. D.S. grew up in a most unique situation. He was the second of twelve children whose ages ranged from three to twenty three years - - some were his own siblings while others were his half-brothers and sisters. One can well imagine the experiences they had on the big plantation in Marshall County, Missis sippi, where the spiritual life of each member was soundly stressed according to the Primitive Baptist faith. The theology of this church was strictly for those who believed in practicing daily the theory of "Begin with Thyself." They did not believe in missionary work. The holdings of this family must have been extensive; for in his will Sherrod II speaks of his "stock of horses, mules, cows, hogs, and all other stock together with my farming utensils,  wagons, buggies, and carriages." Their dwelling must have been quite adequate too. A recent visitor to their old home (1968) remarked: "The main structure is still standing, although crumbling and the roof has fallen in - but there is still enough to tell that it was an imposing home." Apparently the family lived quite well, for Sherrod II became a wealthy man (Long afterwards, D.S. listed his father's "fortune" to be more than $200,000.00) and provided well for his family. It is interesting to note that the spiritual convictions of Sherrod II increased; for in 1836 when his son D.S. was twenty years old, Sherrod II was ordained a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church. D.S. graduat ed from Transylvania Union in Lexington, Kentucky at the age of 16. It is recorded that he was so physically weakened by this endeavor that when he returned home on horseback his father's slaves Father: Sherrod II HARRIS b: 25 Jul 1797 in Union County, NC Mother: Winnie Wells WHITE b: 26 Apr 1801 Marriage 1 Mary Elizabeth WOFFORD b: 1830 Married: 27 Jan 1847 in Tippah Co, MS 1Children John S HARRIS b: 20 Dec 1847 Larkin L HARRIS b: 11 Jan 1850 Robert B HARRIS b: 27 Jun 1852 Daniel HARRIS b: 5 Jun 1854 Lucy Miriam (Lutie) HARRIS b: 5 Aug 1855 Infant Son HARRIS b: 26 Jun 1857 Winnie B HARRIS b: 13 Jul 1858 Benjaman Naud HARRIS b: 16 May 1860 Mary Elizabeth HARRIS b: 24 Dec 1862 Willie Douglas HARRIS b: 1 Jan 1866 in Mississippi Daniel Huger HARRIS b: 4 Jan 1870 Marriage 2 Alice HINSON b: Abt. 1843 in Milan, TN (Gibson Co) Married: 7 Feb 1878 in Hickory Plains, Arkansas 1 1 Note: [1469835 Burbridge.FTW] Roland Theopolis Cook died in the war between the states. Alice and the children started back to Jonesboro, Arkansas via Old Washington. Daniel Seaborn Harris was teaching high school at Hazen, Arkansas and posters were posted for a teacher. Alice applied and was hired. They later fell in l ove and married. He was a widower with several children. They raised their own families and even took in children and chartered schools of higher education in the area. This is the reason errors are made in listing Daniel Seaborn Harris as Professor Harris. He was the son of Sherrod Harris I and Mary Elizabeth Jones Harris. Sherrod II was a hard shell Baptist Preacher of Scot-Irish descent. He moved to a location near Colliersville, Mississippi about the time the Chickasaw Indians were removed to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Here he acquired more than 6,000 acres of land and was listed as the second highest land taxpayer in Marshall County, Mississippi. At his death he was considered to be quite wealthy - his son, Daniel Seaborn Harris I estimated the assets of his father to be more than $200,000.00 Sherrod II built the first sanctuary in that area called the Shiloh Baptist Church. This church stood until 1940-43 (?), when it was destroyed by a cyclone. A recent visitor to his old plantation home remarked, "The main structure is still standing, although crumbling and the roof has fallen in; but there is still enough left to tell that it was an imposing home." According to legends that have come down through the Harris generation, Sherrod II was a personal friend of both Andrew Jackson and of his bitter enemy - David Crockett. An interesting tale is told of how Davy befriended Sherrod Harris II to keep a date with his girl friend. In order to accomplish this, a swollen river with washed-out bridge had to be crossed. Fearless, Davy promised that his horse could easily swim the river and suggested that his friend join him in the crossing. The friend accepted the offer and together they forged the strong river currents to arrive safely on the other side - and in time to keep an important appointment. At his retirement, Sherrod II and his wife, Rebecca, moved to Memphis, Tennessee to live. It is recorded that Nancy Harris Holland, sister of Sherrod II rode 100 miles on a horse when she was eighty years old to see her ailing brother and to attend his funeral. Sherrod II died in Memphis, Tennessee on March 24, 1869 and is interred in one of the twelve lots he purchased in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. Here also are laid to rest his wife Rebecca and some of his children. On his tomb-stone is inscribed the particulars about his ministerial career including "Joined the Primitive Baptist Church in 1832 - ordained a minister of that order in 1846." (Mrs Rebecca Mac Davis, granddaughter of Elizabeth Harris is in possession of the Bible of Sherrod Harris II. This Bible was published in 1853. Ann Harris [email protected] ken, thanks for posting the anson co, nc will of sherrod/ sherwood harris. again, i think these sherwood harrises have been very confused and i am sure i cannot sort this all out myself at this point. to begin with, and as i have talked about previously, i am not sure that the sherwood harris, who married hannah page and the sherwood harris who married elizabeth tillman are/ were the same sherwood harris. again, the sherwood harris, who married hannah page in 1761 in goochland co, va, is definitely indicated/ shown to have been the son of william harris/ mary who was also in goochland co, va and who also had a son gilliam harris. again, this is/ was also the same william harris whose daughter agnes harris married john cawthon and also the same william harris, who edward harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles, sold 50 acres to in louisa co, va, which this william harris sold to charles rice. the sherwood harris, who married elizabeth tilliman in brunswick co, va, may have been the son of william harris/ judith hudson. the fact that sherwood harris in anson co, nc had sons tillman harris and hutson/ hudson harris would indicate to me that this was the sherwood harris, who married elizabeth tillman but that he was not the same sherwood harris who married hannah page. one of the things we need, other than research on these sherwood harrises, of course, is harris dna from these sherwood harrises and their descendants. here are excerpts from this rootsweb post talking about the connections of sherwood harris and his sons tillman harris and hudson harris with the slaughter family in richmond/ anson co, nc. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] How can I find the parent of Millie who was a Creek Indian and also orphan?
    2. How can I find the parent of Millie who was a Creek Indian and also orphan? One researcher said her maiden name was HICKEY born in Oregon and another researcher said she was a Creek Indian born in Montana. After Millie was married, she always went by the name of "Millie Hunter Harris". I have no idea if Hunter is her middle name, maiden name or a name she picked up in an orphanage or from a foster family. Millie was never adopted...always an orphan. 3. Dave, Of interest to you may be that the Honorable John Duncan Harris, b 29 Dec 1829, in Madison Co, KY was the only child of William and Malinda Duncan Harris. RE: Author: Genealogy and Biography, Volume V, 3rd edition, 1886 "HON. JOHN D. HARRIS was born December 29, 1829, three miles south of Richmond, Ky., and is the son and only child of William and Malinda (Duncan) Harris. The former, William Harris, was born in East Madison County, May 16, 1805, and was a son of John and Margaret (Maupin) Harris, natives of Albemarle County, Va., who came to Kentucky about the year 1790. He (John Harris) acted as associate judge, assisted in laying off the town of Richmond, and was a man of more than ordinary prominence. He was born March 14, 1765, and his wife, Margaret Maupin, February 1, 1767. They were married June 23, 1785, and to them were born nine children, as follows: Robert, born October 27, 1786; Christopher, born April 1, 1788; Overton, born November 24, 1799; Betsy, born September 30, 1791; James, born May 1, 1794; John M., born December 30, 1795; Frances M. born March 26, 1802; William, born May 16, 1805; Susanna W., born May 10, 1808." >From same source: "William Harris, the father of subject, was a man of considerable local prominence. He represented Madison County in the Lower House of the Legislature in 1850, and for twenty years held the office of school commissioner. He was a wealthy farmer, enterprising and progressive, and a public-spirited citizen. He died October 25, 1872. His wife, Malinda Duncan, was a daughter of John and Lucy (White) Duncan, one of a family of six children, as follows: Malinda, Elizabeth (Taylor), Emily (Goodloe), John A., Lou Ann (Hart), and Olivia (Gregory)." It's not much, but I hope it helps a little. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris-Duncan Connection - Possible Clue
    2. Dave Duncan has posted a longish but informative query, only part of which I will even attempt to answer. His query, because it reflects a good deal of good research, should be repeated at the bottom of this e-mail. Right off the bat - I see some of the folks he mentions MAY appear in the 1880 census and that information should be pursued. Why? Because each person enumerated was asked [and perhaps answered by the parents, in the event there were minors or other relatives in the home] these questions: 1) Where was your father born? 2) Where was your mother born? (Maybe Dave already knows the answers, but it doesn't hurt to review. Every time I pick up some old reserch notes or photocopies, I discover a new connection!!!) If you have not noted that part of the 1880 census, I urge each of you with relatives living in that time period to review that census and subsequent censuses which ask the same question--even the 1930 one. (That is how I discovered in the 1930 census a maternal uncle with a very common name--his mother was born in England. I picked out a likely location, not far from his birthplace, and looked for a Brown whose mother was born in England!!!) How I used this 1880 census information in one research task: My great-grandfather, living in Texas in 1880 but who was born in Kentucky, told the census-taker his father was born in North Carolina!!!! That made a great deal of difference in where I was to do research in KY for this very common surname!!! The mother was born in Kentucky, so I surmised a marriage took place in Kentucky--and I had some *suspicious characters*, in two likely Kentucky counties, based on some old letters, and some deeds and vital records I had researched. Oh, yes and court records and a rejected Revolutionary War pension--with a familiar given name!!! You may use that information in the 1880 census to good advantage in your own research. This should be FREE on Ancestry.com as they got it from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I believe the index to that census may still be on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) [which is changing constantly]. . I know a good deal about the Harrises [but not all of them] of colonial and post-Revolutionary Albemarle Co., VA and I could easily find more about the Maupins in that same county--and in Louisa Co., the parent county of Albemarle Co. And with a LOT of luck, perhaps in Hanover Co., VA, the parent county of Louisa Co. And the deeds and the marriage records of Henderson Co., KY have also informed me. About the Duncans of Madison Co., I know little. Question to Dave: Does the name Martin Duncan, a resident of Albemarle Co. in 1748 strike a chord? Virginia Land Patent Book 27, p. 25 has this entry [abstracted] Thomas Grigg Yarbrough, 100 acs. Albemarle Co. on the north Fork or Br. of Cunningham, adj. MARTIN DUNCAN; 1 Dec 1748, p. 25 10 shill. (Source: Dennis Ray Hudgins, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. Five: 1741-1749 [Richmond, VA: Virginia Genealogical Society, 1994], p 276) There is another reference in Patent Bk No. 28 John Smith, 400 acs. Albemarle Co. on the Middle fork of Cunningham Cr., adj. MARTIN DUNCAN: 12 Jan 1747/48, p. 309 2 pds. (Ibid, p. 329) I highly recommend that Dave search the Land Patents for persons named Martin on the Library of Virginia website for land patents. The newest ones [as in 1990 and later] appear first. Therefore those patents awarded in colonial days appear toward the end of the list. If there are, say, 400 listings for a surname, certainly you want to use the JUMP button to get toward the end. _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm) I would ignore, for the time being, those persons who got Northern Neck land grants--which were mainly leases from the estate of Lord Fairfax on which they had to pay quit rents. Look for counties which were some of the parent counties of Albemarle Co.--Louisa, Goochland, perhaps Hanover, and so on. I am wondering whether Duncan family who came to Madison Co., KY and earlier to Albemarle Co. and perhaps to Augusta Co., Va may have been of the Scotch-Irish [not my terminology but wait] people who migrated from Pennsylvania down the Shenandoah Valley to counties in that general area?. If so, a search of this URL may reveal some earlier records. (Dave mentions my ancestress, Agnes McCord, second wife of Christopher Harris the elder. This is the trail of migration which Agnes's family seems to have followed--Pennsylvania to Augusta Co. to Albemarle Co.--and on to Kentucky. and then lots of other places--Texas, Missouri, you name it!!! . I have not done Pennsylvania research of her family, but I did find her and her husband listed in some of the records of Augusta Co. as in this work. _www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/) There is on this website information [court orders for the most part] from this three-volume work by Lyman Chalkley.: Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia Each volume of this work has its own index. I only clicked on Vol. I index and noted a great many [for the time] males named Duncan. This is just a hunch, but there may be a whole world of research in colonial days to spot the ancestors of your Duncan. I will try to answer some of your Harris of Madison Co., Ky quwetions later, but it seems you have done a good deal of research. My little book by Geoge K. Schweitzer, Phd,ScD, Virginia Genealogical Research tells me Buckingham County, VA was formed in 1761 from Albemarle Co. and later Appomattox Co. So Martin Duncan MAY be one of your progenitors. A probable cousin, E.W.Wallace whose ancestor is Overton Harris (d. 1827 in Madison Co., KY) one of younger sons of Christopher Harris & Agnes McCord Dave's Query which others may want to answer--you may know more of the Harris family of Madison Co. KY (Otter Creek area) than I do!!! I have not had time to read ALL the Harris deeds on film which the Family History Library has!!! EWW //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Dave Duncan" <[email protected]> Subject: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris/Duncan Connection > I'm sending this post to the Harris-Hunters-L list with a copy to the Duncan-L list in hopes that someone might have an interest in responding... I've been following, with interest, the many discussions (HARRIS-HUNTERS-L) on the family of Christopher Harris from Albemarle Co., Va./Madison Co., Ky. and his two wives, Mary Elizabeth Dabney and Agnes McCord. I don't know if there is any connection yet or not to my Buckingham Co. Harrises (ggg-grandfather David H. Harris, b. bet. 1814-1820 Buckingham Co., Va., m. Mary Jane Thomas, b. 1820 Buckingham Co., Va.) but I'm always looking for clues to a possible link. My main Harris/Duncan connection is through my great-grandparents, Mary Rebecca Harris (daughter of Alexander Benjamin Harris and grand-daughter of David H. Harris) and William Archer Duncan, who were married in Buckingham Co. in 1896. In researching the Duncan side of my family, however, I learned of another Harris/Duncan connection. My gggg-grandfather, Fleming Hall Duncan (1774-1826 Amherst Co., Va.), had a nephew (son of William Duncan and Sally Henley), Dr. William Henry Duncan (1803-1892), who married Susannah Woods Harris, daughter of John Harris and Margaret Maupin and grand-daughter of Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord of Albemarle Co., Va./Madison Co., Ky. I am very interested in this connection and any relationship between the Harris and Duncan families. My Fleming Hall Duncan's brother, William (1776-1846), was a Baptist minister from Amherst Co., Va. who left that area of the country in 1830 with his family and headed westward (through Kentucky) eventually! settling in Callaway Co., Mo. Now, here is what initially led me to this post (although I am very interested in any information regarding any of these families): Susannah Woods Harris (1808-1893) had an older brother, William (1805-1872), who married Malinda Duncan of Madison Co., Ky. and I believe Malinda is the daughter of John Duncan (b. 1790, Otter Creek, Madison Co., Ky.) and Lucy White. With two Harris siblings (Susannah and William) marrying two Duncans (Dr. William, son of William Duncan and Sally Henley, and Malinda, daughter of John Duncan and Lucy White), I am curious about the relationships between these families in Madison Co., Ky. and their connections back to Va. (Harrises from Albemarle Co., Va. and my Duncan family from Amherst Co., Va. which was formed from Albemarle Co. in 1761.) I am not very familiar yet with the family of John Duncan (b. 1790) who married Lucy White so, if anyone has information on this Duncan family and how they might relate to the family of Dr. William Henry Duncan (b. 1803, married Susannah Woods Harris) and his ancestors (William, John, John of Amherst Co., Va.), I would appreciate any help you can give. Also, it appears that William Harris and Malinda Duncan had a son, John Duncan Harris (b. 1829, Madison Co., Ky.), who married Nancy Jane White, daughter of Valentine White and Jane Harris Gentry (daughter of Richard Gentry and Jane Harris; grand-daughter of Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord.) Interesting! Can anyone shed some light on these Harris/Duncan connections? Any information you can share would be much appreciated. Thank you! Happy New Year to Harris-Hunters and Duncans everywhere! **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. (http://www.aol.com/?ncid=emlcntaolcom00000026)

    3. In regard to Mary Dabney Harris wife of Christopher Harris, married 22 Feb 1745, the abstract Will of her proposed father, Cornelius d'Aubigne (Dabney) is of interest. "From book "Sketch of the Dabney's of Virginia" by William H Dabney. Will of Cornelius d'Aubigne was recorded in the county Court House of Hanover, 17 Feb, 1765. Names his wife, Sarah, and children William, John and Cornelius (already dead). *Names his son in law, Harris (his wife being also dead),*his dau's Mary Elizabeth Maupin, Fanny Maupin and Anne Thompson, and husbands of two other dau's, Brown and Johnson. John Dabney and Henry Terrell were executors. Will was dated 25 Oct 1764.. At the time of the research a copy of which was in the possession of William Winston Dabney of Enfield, King William Co, VA. The book is *copyrighted 1888*. A facsimile reprint done in 1999. email sent by Elizabeth to E W Wallace, [email protected] 6/12/2003" I do question why Cornelius would name a daughter Mary Elizabeth and another daughter, simply Mary. From the above Will, it's indicated that Mary Elizabeth married a man named ___Maupin. However, It is probable that Mary Dabney Harris is the deceased daughter of Cornelius Dabney. Christopher Harris Sr. remarried before 1765 (does anyone have the exact date?), so it's likely that Mary had died before the Will of Cornelius Dabney was written. And from the marriage record, we know that Christopher Harris Jr and a Mary Dabney did marry. Many families in Colonial times, used a naming pattern for their children to honor their parents, grandparents and other family members. In studying the names of the children of Christopher and Mary Dabney Harris, I find the following pattern: First male child, Robert Harris, named after Christopher's father Major Robert Harris. Second male child, Dabney Harris, named after Mary's father's surname, or could his full name be Cornelius Dabney Harris? First female child, Sarah Harris, named after Mary's mother, Sarah Jennings. Second female child, Mourning Harris, named after Christopher's mother, Mourning Glenn Harris. Third male child, Christopher Harris, Jr, named after his father, Christopher Harris, Sr. Third female child, Mary Harris, named after her mother, Mary Dabney Harris. Fourth male child, Tyre or Tyree Harris, named after his father Christopher's eldest brother, Tyree Harris, also a son of Major Robert Harris and Mourning Glenn Harris. Open to comments and opinions. I'm still looking for my Henry Harris born 1742, Orange Co VA. who married Annie Byrd also from Orange Co VA. Any helpful hints are very much appreciated. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re harris/ flake anson co, nc
    2. this earlier post by william flake joiner says that sarah abigail harris, also called alse harris, wife of samuel flake of anson co, nc, was the daughter of stephen harris, who by 1750 had moved to amelia co, va.   also another post by deborah hoffman on the harris forum post no 9561 also states that sarah abigail flake was the daughter of stephen harris.    ( of course stephen harris, indicated to have also been one of the sons of our william harris/ mary giles, was not the son of our captain thomas harris but would rather have been his great-grandson------bhc)   again, this is on harris forum post # 9561 by deborah hoffman:   Hello and Happy New Year, It looks like we are searching the same line. My G.G.G.G.G.G.Grandfather was Samuel Flake who married Sarah Harris. Do you have any proof of their marriage? If so can you send me something showing this. My uncle Bill and I have been trying to find this and so far have had no luck. Maybe we can help each other. I do know that Sarah's father's name was stephen and his father's name was Capt. Thomas Harris. They were supposed to have lived in St. Martin's Parrish in virginia but I can't find any proof of this. Please write me back at: [email protected] Debbie   then, the following is a rootsweb post by william flake joiner also saying that sarah abigail harris flake was the daughter of stephen harris of our captain thomas harris' harris line and family.   HARRIS-VA-L ArchivesArchiver > HARRIS-VA > 1998-11 > 0910251563 From: "Wm. F. Joiner" < [email protected]> Subject: Alse HARRIS, daughter of Stephen HARRIS Date: Thu, 05 Nov 1998 01:39:23 -0600 My HARRIS line is fairly well documented back through Samuel FLAKE (abt 1699, IOW, ENG - 1802, Anson Co., NC) and Alse HARRIS (abt 1742, ? - aft 1802, Anson Co., NC). In following Samuel FLAKE's migrations, we know that he was in Isle of Wight, VA as early as 1715 and was in central VA (Amelia Co, I think in the 1750s) finally arriving in Anson Co., NC by 1762 with his second (or third) wife, Alse HARRIS. Cpt. Thomas HARRIS' line is well documented to include his GG Granddaughter Alse HARRIS, daughter of Stephen HARRIS (1714-aft 1770). Stephen HARRIS and his family were in Amelia County, VA by 1750. Stephen HARRIS' daughter Alse was a first cousin of Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS (1733-1805) of Anson Co., NC. Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS was the son of Stephen HARRIS' brother William HARRIS (1710-1770). There was evidently a connection between the family of Samuel FLAKE and the family of Sherwood HARRIS due to the witnessing of deeds, wills, etc. Samuel FLAKE and Alse HARRIS' son Jordan FLAKE witnessed the will of Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS. Was Cpt. Thomas HARRIS' GG Granddaughter, Alse HARRIS and my GGGG Grandmother, Alse HARRIS the same person? Thanks, "Sonny" Wm. Flake Joiner 311 East Church Street P. O. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] also re sherrod/ sherwood harris anson co, nc
    2.  again, i cannot confirm myself that this was the same sherwood harris, who married hannah page, etc, who married elizabeth tillman and who moved to anson co, nc.     i have not tracked this sherwood harris.  i have never focused on anson co, nc and i have not seen kathryn wiggins' "harris papers": anson co, nc.   i do, however, want to talk about some interesting things and connections i have noted.  i will also talk about this first and, then, post the info.   as shown, per this sherwood harris' anson co, nc will, one of the witnesses was this jordan flake.   per the info, which can be found on a number of these rootsweb sites, jordan flake was the son of samuel flake and his 2nd wife sarah abigail harris.   the meager info i can find on sarah abigail harris, but from two different sources, says that she was born in 1742 in st martin's parish, hanover co, va and that she was the daughter of stephen harris.   obviously, i cannot confirm this but if so, this would have been the same stephen harris involved with our david harris/ jane landy richardson and our harris family on cubb creek in hanvover/ louisa cos, va; the same stephen harris, who my william harris/ judith hudson sold his land to in louisa co, va, per brunswick co, va deed which i have cited a number of times now and the same stephen harris also involved with carol's thomas harris.   the info also says that jordan flake married as his 2nd wife faitha hanna and that she was the daughter of this james hanna/ faitha madison of laurens co, sc.    this is also interesting because this is/ was, perhaps, the same hanna/ hannah family who is indicated to have known our/ my harris family in amelia/ prince edward co, va; lunenburg co, va; and on into laurens co, sc.   i have tried to find out the source of the info that sarah abigail harris, who married samuel flake and who was the mother of jordan flake, was the daughter of stephen harris of st martin's parish, hanover co, va, but, so far, i have not been successful but see the posts about this to follow.   to be continued:   belva harris cauthen harris dna group 8------26910

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] re sherwood harris anson co, nc
    2. ken, thanks for posting the anson co, nc will of sherrod/ sherwood harris.   again, i think these sherwood harrises have been very confused and i am sure i cannot sort this all out myself at this point.   to begin with, and as i have talked about previously, i am not sure that the sherwood harris, who married hannah page and the sherwood harris who married elizabeth tillman are/ were the same sherwood harris.   again, the sherwood harris, who married hannah page in 1761 in goochland co, va, is definitely indicated/ shown to have been the son of william harris/ mary who was also in goochland co, va and who also had a son gilliam harris.    again, this is/ was also the same william harris whose daughter agnes harris married john cawthon and also the same william harris, who edward harris, son of our william harris/ mary giles, sold 50 acres to in louisa co, va, which this william harris sold to charles rice.   the sherwood harris, who married elizabeth tilliman in brunswick co, va, may have been the son of william harris/ judith hudson.   the fact that sherwood harris in anson co, nc had sons tillman harris and hutson/ hudson harris would indicate to me that this was the sherwood harris, who married elizabeth tillman but that he was not the same sherwood harris who  married hannah page.   one of the things we need, other than research on these sherwood harrises, of course, is harris dna  from these sherwood harrises and their descendants.   here are excerpts from this rootsweb post talking about the connections of sherwood harris and his sons tillman harris and hudson harris with the slaughter family in richmond/ anson co, nc.   BOSTICK-L Archives Archiver > BOSTICK > 2004-10 > 1097281867 From: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Slaughter] 1800s/NC>AL>MS Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 20:31:07 EDT Responding to Debbie on SLAUGHTER list and sending to SLAUGHTER, HENKEL, CROUCH, STANFIELD, LEAKE, HORTON, TREADWELL, CROUCH, McDONALD, BOSTICK, HARRIS, TILLMAN lists, Re: All of these families connecting out of 1700s-1800s NC/Richmond County into Leake County, MS and elsewhere including descendants of (Rev.) Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS and Owen SLAUGHTER, Sr. and Jr. and Samuel CROUCH that married into these other families....have much other information that we have been connecting with but still trying to sort out some of the same given name    6. WILLIAM A. SLAUGHTER married c1836 probably in Kemper Co., MS ISABELLA L. STANFIELD>> would be William A. SLAUGHTER, born: 1810 in Greene County, Alabama, (apparently the son of William HARRIS, (brother of John M. SLAUGHTER,) and 1st wife, Martha HARRIS, (according to your information below,) before the marriage of William HARRIS to Martha's sister?, Elizabeth HARRIS.) This Martha HARRIS is shown as having been the daughter of Elizabeth TILLMAN, born: 1726 in Brunswick County, Virginia, and (Reverend) Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS, born: Abt. 1733 in Brunswick County, Virginia, (whom is a descendant of the same HARRIS family from which I descend in another earlier branch in Isle of Wight County, Virginia that married into my JOYNER - BROWN - LOTT - LIGHTFOOT - HATTEN family and his wife, Elizabeth TILLMAN is descended from GOODRICH that also married into LIGHTFOOT lineage.) Oh, forgot to say that.....(Rev.) Sherwood/Sherrod HARRIS and Elizabeth TILLMAN also had other children marrying into this family group with their son, Hudson/Hutson/Huston HARRIS, born: 1796 in Anson? or Richmond? County, NC, who married Mary SLAUGHTER, (sister of John M. and William,) (d/o Mary McDONALD and Owen SLAUGHTER, Jr.,) and Tillman HARRIS who married Elizabeth WILLIAMS, (related somehow to the Hudson Harris WILLIAMS, (son of Samuel WILLIAMS and Easther SLAUGHTER, I believe,) and Mary HARRIS who married a ? 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Harris/Duncan Connection
    2. Dave Duncan
    3. I'm sending this post to the Harris-Hunters-L list with a copy to the Duncan-L list in hopes that someone might have an interest in responding... Dave Duncan

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Albemarle & Buckingham Co. VA Harris families
    2. Diane Ethridge
    3. I am researching an Addison Schuyler Harris & wife, Henrietta (Harris) Harris who were first cousins. Addison was from Albemarle Co. VA & Henrietta was from Buckingham Co. VA. They moved to Highland Co. OH & from there to Clark Co. IL where they were in the 1850 census. My gg grandmother, Johanna Gilbert Wright, was a 15 yr old girl living in their h/h & a Daniel Numan (Mulatto) was also in the h/h. I don't know the Wright-Harris connection but have been trying to find out if it was familial or if they were just close friends. Addison & Henrietta moved to Richland Co. IL where both died. Henrietta's death certificate lists Dr. Henry Justus B. Wright, of Olney, IL as her personal physician. He was originally from Hancock Co. IN where some of my Wrights also settled so I do believe there is a connection there somewhere. This Dr. Wright died in CA & was said to have written a history of the Wright & Horton families, although I haven't yet found where that history was placed after his death. I have more info on this Harris line if you're interested. Diane Ethridge Conroe, TX

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] A Christopher Harris-Polly Payne Marriage in Caswell Co., NC 1801
    2. This little *bio* may be of interest to persons interested in some of the family of Tyree Harris, formerly of colonial Louisa Co., VA but later of Orange Co. NC and then Caswell Co., NC, which was formed 1777 from Orange Co. This concerns one of Tyree's sons. Reportedly, Tyree's first wife was Elizabeth [Chaptman]. His second wife was Mary Ann Simpson, daughter of Richard Simpson of Caswell co., but formerly of Orange Co., NC and previous to that, Fairfax Co., VA. (Comment: I have an abstract of a Virginia deed executed by Tyree Harris and in which his wife Elizabeth relinquished her dower right.) CHRISTOPHER HARRIS SON OF TYREE HARRIS. He is listed in the IGI, with birthdate and place, as the son of Tyree Harris and Mary Ann Simpson. Nothing else is known. IGI is less than a reliable source. A Christopher Harris married in Caswell Co., NC: 1801, 12 Jan - Harris, Christopher & Polly Payne .. Duke Williams was bondsman. (Comment: Duke Williams was married to Ede or Edey+ Harris 19 Oct 1790, Caswell Co.) (Source: Katherine Kerr Kendall, Caswell County, North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1778-1868 [Baltimore: Clearfield Company, 1990], p. 43) According to the will of his father, Tyree Harris, Christopher was to receive land on High Rock Creek, Rockingham Co., NC. His name does not occur in Kendall's abstracts of deeds of Caswell Co. except probably as "C. Harris." That he is related to Christopher Harris I of Madison Co., KY (probable nephew) is indicated by this entry in Caswell Co. January court 1791: p. 374 Christopher Harriss, orphan, in acct. with Corn. Dabney. Payments to John Lenox, Richard Smith. (Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA WILL BOOKS 1777-1814 [Baltimore: Clearfield Publ Co., 1997], p 33) We infer from this that Christopher Harriss is underage and that he is somehow related to Cornelius Dabney. In the will of his uncle, Christopher Harris, Madison Co., KY, ca. 1794, there is reference to the will of Cornelius Dabney, Christopher Harris I's reported first wife having been Mary Dabney. Her exact relationship to Cornelius Dabney is unknown, however. Submitted by E.W. Wallace **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines.
