    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Wilminton Harris s/o Timothy Harris of Henrico Co. VA????
    2. Carol E Barron
    3. I've studied the records of Wilminton Harris for some time finding him in early 1746/47 Goochland Co. tithables as Sexton of St. James Northam staying in Goochland for years after that when he started showing up in records of Lunenburg Co. (1750's) and in 1768 (of Charlotte Co. VA) selling his Goochland Co. land (w/wife Joanah). Recently, I ran across his name in a 1759 Amelia Co. VA record as a witness to a deed of Child/Chiles to Southerland with the land in Amelia being the same as the land mentioned in the next Amelia Co. deed (DB 1, p 20) indicating Timothy Harris having the earlier patent on a portion of this Amelia land on Nummisseen Cr. Wilminton Harris was witness in the Goochland Co. 1734 will of Daniel Hix/Hicks along w/Capt James Holman (also Burgess of Goochland Co.) mentioned as possible guardian of Hix' two children so we can get some idea here as to Wilminton's age being at least 21 in 1734 = b ca 1713 & apparently Wilminton lived near Sherwood Harris in 1749 Goochland tithables. Kathryn Wiggins has both Wilminton & Sherwood as sons of Timothy Harris/Eliz. Womack as her "speculative research" and given the information I've gathered on Wilminton, I believe Kathryn's speculation could very well be correct on Wilminton being s/o Timothy but as far as the other children Kathryn notes for Timothy....I don't have anything more except Sherwood lived near Wilminton. Also, I don't know where Wilminton Harris finally settled & died...my last record shows him in Charlotte Co. VA (1768) but I have seen him noted as being in Granville Co. NC but have seen no record to justify that. Additionally, there is a Harris DNA from another Wilmington Harris b 1811 which they claim John Harris/Eliz. Overstreet (m 1789 Charlotte Co.VA) as the parents of this later Wilmington but that's as far back as they have for their line...which is in the unmatched section of our Harris DNA project. Kathryn Wiggins, in her section on Cumberland County.... 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Ligon Family History
    2. For those Harris-Hunters who have access through their local or State [or neighboring] public library to the online database called HeritageQuest, this is to advise that the Ligon family history [not the title, I judge] is digitized and appears under BOOKS. After you gain access to HQ, click on the link to Books and type in Ligon and Virginia. There is an index. This family was reportedly linked with a Thomas Harris family. Check to see if there is documentation. (Thomas Harris is not my line, unless I have not studied enough!!!) Incidentally, there is reference to William Harris and Temperance Overton, p. 844, but please take with a lot of skepticism the info about the so-called progenitor Robert Harris and his alleged wife Mary Claiborne Rice. There is NO documentation of this Robert Harris being the father of William Harris with wife Temperance Overton nor is there documentation in any other book that I know of, and if you can produce some document in Virginia [official records] proving this relationship, a good many of us will award you with a book costing not over $25.00. I promise!!! But the documentation had better be good. Can it be replicated by other family historians? E.W.Wallace **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. 3. Thank you so much for the information. I corrected my entry. I don't know where I got the Mary Jefferson as Thomas' mother. Thank you all for the great information and advice. From: [email protected] Subject: RE: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Benjamin Harris m Eppes and Benjamin Harris mPlatt and Wager--their parents Date: January 8, 2009 10:56:12 AM PST To: [email protected], [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] Hi Leo: I am a descendant of Benjamin Harris and Ann Eppes through their son Joseph. It took me a long time to find out there are two Benjamin Harrises both with father Thomas Harris. My Benjamin Harris father was a Thomas Harris who married a Mary unknown. So far there is no proof of my Benjamin Harris' father Thomas ancestry. You might want to do a search in the book, History of Louisa County, written by Dr. Malcolm Hart Harris. It has a lot of detail about those Harrises but is in error about the ancestry of the Capt. Thomas Harris, immigrant, being son of Sir William Harris of Cricksey, England. A lot of us have been researching the Harris families in VA for a long time. Pat Clare's message today to Harris Hunters was correct. My Harris ancestors moved from the Powhatan County to somewhere in Tennessee and then on to Missouri and Arkansas. Two of my Benjamin's sons and my Joseph's brothers, Francis Eppes and Richard were Revolutionary War soldiers and ended up in Alabama. Not much help there for your NC Harrises. Ann Epps Harris is in the DAR book and is my DAR ancestor. My Brother, Lynn Harris, DNA kit is the unmatched #74028. Close to two others there but no common ancestor we can find. 2. >From the Montgomery County, TN marriage records: 1752 to 1837 HUST, William to Elizabeth Harris daughter of Reverend Abner Harris February 9,1821 by Reverend Reuben Ross Does anyone know the parents of Rev Abner Harris? I am missing any mention or descendents of one Abner Harris who was a twin to Jesse Harris, both born 23 Jan 1862 (as noted in the Douglas Register) in either Goochland or Louisa County, VA. Could this Abner be the son of Capt. William and Mary Hudson Harris? Could he have moved with family to Tennessee by about 1810? Peggy in CA **************New year...new news. 2. A. No one has yet connected a father for Thomas Harris m Mary Jefferson. The DNA project shows them to be Group 24. B. The Benjamin Harris/Ann Eppes DNA descendant is unmatched. C. The apparent DNA group for Thomas Harris, Immigrant is Group 8. Therefore, according to what we know from the above, Benjamin Harris/Ann Eppes are not connected to either Group 24 or Group 8. **************New year...new news. 3. Thank you for asking where they lived and whether or not they could be the same person. This is what I've gathered--I'm not sure if it's right at all. The Benjamin Harris who married Anne Isham Eppes, was born, I think, in Henrico County, and died in Cumberland County. Didn't part of that become Powhatan County later? The Benjamin Harris (b abt 1710) who married Frances Platt and Priscilla Wager is said to have lived in Manakintown or Henrico Virginia. His daughter Mary married Sion Spencer who was the son of a Flournoy. Interestingly, his grandson Edward Hake Moseley, lived at Malvern, Powhatan County. (I'm trying to get a timeline of the ownership of Malvern Hill. Both the Ligons--closely allied with the Harrises--and the Cockes lived there, and had connections to the original Malvern Hills in England.) The father I have for both of them (one must be wrong) is Thomas Harris, 1657-1730 married to Mary Jefferson 1668-1744. Thomas' father, William Harris, 1629-1678, was apparently killed by Indians. Two years after Bacon's Rebellion. And William's father was the "immigrant" Thomas Harris 1586-1649 m Adria Hoare. Who lived at Curles, on the James River. Who was closely allied with the Ligons, and I think both were Quakers. So there's that Malvern Hill thing again. I'm profoundly muddled.

    3. Could anyone differentiate for me, Benjamin Harris (abt 1710) m Anne Isham Eppes; and the Benjamin Harris (abt 1710) who married Frances Platt and Priscilla Wager? I have Major Thomas Harris and Mary Jefferson for the parents of each and something's wrong. For the first Benjamin I have children Sarah Eppes, Edward, Benjamin, Mary, Martha, Tabitha, Anne Eppes, Joseph, Francis Eppes, Richard, Anne and Francis. For the second Benjamin I have children Phoebe, Mary, Hanson Wager, Edith, William Wager, Benjamin, Priscilla, Ann Hanson and Sarah "Sally". I'm looking for the father of my Thomas Harris, abt 1676, Currituck, North Carolina who married "Ellender" or "Elender". I have hundreds of different Harrises with Virginia or North Carolina connections in my database. And I keep hoping that one of these people I trace back, will lead me in the direction of my ancestor. So where did I go wrong on the Benjamin Harrises?

    2. Dave Duncan
    3. Thank you, E. W.! I always enjoy your thoughtful and constructive responses. They are very helpful and much appreciated. Concerning Martin Duncan (of Albemarle Co., Va., 1748): Yes, I am familiar with him and believe him to be a kin to my Duncan ancestors but have not yet been able to identify his connection. He and his wife, Mary, are mentioned a couple of times in "The Diary of Robert Rose" (1703-1751, Scottish colonial parson.) One excerpt mentions that "Martin Duncan and his wife Mary were indentured servants of William Cabell." I would be interested in knowing more about that relationship. George Duncan (abt. 1728 Scotland -1783 Fluvanna Co., Va.), brother to my John Duncan (Baptist minister, d. 1806 Augusta Co., Va.), married Ann Hall at Warminster, the home of William Cabell in Albemarle Co., Va. Thanks again for the many tips. I will be working more on trying to find the connections between my early Duncan and Harris ancestors from Amherst, Buckingham and Albemarle Cos. in Virginia. Have a great day! Dave Duncan Ohio

    1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Which Sherwood Harris?
    2. This is just to advise that there was a Sherwood Harris in Granville Co., NC who wrote his will 15 June 1763. The will was proved August Court 1763, Granville Co. NC. In he will he named these persons [not in the order in the wil] Wife - Jane - one white horse and furrniture Sherwood Harris - son - two parcels of land; a horse plus bridle and saddle Mary Hix - dau - land [her husband Absolom Hix] Absolom Hix - son-in-law "all sums of money due from him to me Sarah Harris - dau - horse and bed & furniture John Harris - son - all my waring clothes and rifle gun Jemima White - 5 shillings Sterling money of England Mercy White - granddaughter - 20 pds. when she attans the age of 18 years or marries Joshua Hays - [relationship not given] - land upon paying executors 60 pds. Will lists youngest children; Anne, Sherwood & Elizabeth Harris Executors My loving wife Jane Harris and my loving brother Robert Harris In the source cited below, there is an abstract of the will of Absolom Hiks [sic] dated 8 Feb 1770. Whole estate is to go to his wife as long as she remains in widowhood. Should be marry a second husband, she to have equal part as one of the rest of the children being in life at the time of the marriage. Executors: wife, Jecob Waddall, Sheerat Herris,\Wit: Sherwood Harris, Jacob (X) Waddell April court 1770 proved by oath of Jacob Waddall. Mary Hix the Executrix qualified as such.. Rackley, 2002], various pages his webpage: members.tripod.com/rackley_publishing/ Another Sherwood Harris? If one reads the early deed indexes of Madison Co., KY [where Boonesborough is located], one will find listed under the H's one Sherwood Harris. A number of people from Granville Co., NC are found in early deeds of Madison Co., KY. There are several references to one Sherwood Harris in the Madison County, Kentucky Court Order Books A and B. Book A is for the years 1787-1791. My comment: Based on the excerpt from Madison Co. COB A, I deduce that Sherwood Harris is the younger man named in the will of his father, sketched out above. Why? Because the person granting the power of attorney is from Granville Co., NC and a close associate of Col. Richard Henderson, whose dream was Boonesborough, which was to be the 14th colony of what was not yet United States of America!!! The Revolution intervened and authorities in both North Carolina and in Virginia objected!!! Oh, yes, the man Searcy who proved the power of attorney was the son, I suspect, of Bartlett Searcy, formerly of Granville Co., NC. His widow Lucy and family remained in Madison Co., KY. Many of the children were underage. Here is the excerpt concerning Sherwood Harris [Note Kentucky did not become a state until 1792. In 1788 it was still part of Virginia.] At a court held for Madison County on Tuesday the 26th day of February 1788. A power of attorney from Len Henly Bullock to Sherwood Harris was proved by the oaths of Charles Searcy and is ordered to be recorded. [Source; Jackie Couture, Madison County Kentucky, Court Order Book A, 1787-1791 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1996], p. 29] There are a few other references to Sherwood Harris in COB A. If persons are interested in the activities of Sherwood Harris in Madison Co., KY, I highly recommend you order through your local LDS family history center the filmed deed indexes - both grantor and grantee - for Madison Co. Sherwood Harris is NOT my ancestor and I do not follow him, but when I am looking for deeds for Harris family members in the Deed indexes mentioned above, I cannot help but note his appearance. I hope this sheds some light on some predecessor fellows named Sherwood Harris!!! E.W.Wallace **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. 1. [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Excerpts from letter by Daniel Seaborn Harris to his son Alvin Virgil Harris, aged 23 years.
    2. Ken Schwarzburg
    3. This letter was printed in Kathryn Higgins "Harris Papers" Vol. II, page 152 I have printed it verbatim, however I have made some comments when something seemed to be incorrect. " Sherrod Harris, your great grandfather, was a native of Virginia. He served through the Revolutionary War, he was one of the hundred men under General Light Horse Harry Lee who rode through Cornwallis' lines without the loss of a man, Cornwallis believing that General Washington was right on him with his whole army therefore he would not let a shot be fired." Comment. Indications from other publications indicate Sherrod Harris did not serve in the War. If the event ever occurred, Harry Lee was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time. Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, VA Oct. 19 1781. Harry Lee did not become a Major General until 1798. "Your great grandmother was a Jones before she married our great grandfather. The fruits of their marriage was eight children, five boys and three daughters: your great uncles and aunts, Hudson Harris, ----iam Harris, Simeon Harris, Tilman Harris, and your grandfather, Sherrod Harris. The girls, your great aunts, were Nancy, she married Joshuway Birmingham in North Carolina who left several children. Your Aunt Bettie married Miles Stephenson in Virginia and emigrated to south Alabama. Your Aunt Martha married Bob Stringfellow. The entire family, with your great grandmother, emigrated to south Alabama, settled in Green County and Pickens County. Your own grandfather married your grandmother in South Carolina. Her maiden name Was Winnie Wells White. She was born in 1801 and died in 1833, leaving five children, your uncle Tilman, myself, your aunt Pamela and Miriam." Comment: Another child was Hudson Alban, who died. " "Your grandmother was born in 1797. On the death of my mother, your grandfather married Rebecca Kirby of Carroll County, Tennessee, and left eight children. Your grandfather, having made a great fortune, say about 200,000 dollars, died March 24, 1869. He was a hardshell Baptist preacher. Many of the children of Uncle Simeon settled in Texas. Your Uncle Miles Stephensom's children remained in Pickens County, Alabama. Lem, Vince and Watt became Presbyterian preachers." "Your great grandmother Harris was ninety-five years old when she died." Comment: Born 1758,she died 3 May 1846 = 88 years. "She died at your Uncle Stephenson's in Pickens County, Alabama. Your grandfather Harris died in Marshall County, Mississippi. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee. Your great grandfather was married twice, I know he had one or two sons with him in the Revolutionary War. That was John." Comment. Doubtful he served in the War. "Jonathan and Uncle Archie Harris, those I never saw. He had also several daughters. I saw one of then Aunt Mary Williams, She died in Henderson Co., Tennessee." "This sketch I have prepared for Alvin Virgil Harris hoping he will keep it as long as he lives. His father with much love for him and (children) that he may ever have. D. S. 3. In 1758 NC General Assembly the parish of St John was divided and the parish of Granville was created. These men named Harris were appointed Vestryman for Granville Parish. Robert Harris, Richard Harris Jun. Sharwood (Sherwood) Harris. The others that were appointed at the same time were Richard Henderson, Rueben Leary, Henry Howard, James Mitchell, Andrew Hampton, Thomas Lowe, Evan Ragland, William Benford, Darwin Elwick. There is a Daniel Harris appointed Vestryman in the St John parish. Can anyone give further information on these Harris men? They were no doubt men of prominence in the county. Eleanor Homewood
