To reply to Mrs. Wallace's posting: "Another James Harris? Later, it appears James Harris was present in Madison Co. He was not only an agent of Edward Harris of the town of Newbern in the State of North Carolina, a deed executed 3 Sept 1798, but also he was an a witness to the deed. (DB D-570, film FHL 183,285) It is unknown whether there was a blood relationship between Edward Harris of Newbern, NC and James Harris of Madison Co., KY; however, Edward Harris is not named in the will of Christopher Harris I of Madison Co." This James Harris, son of Samuel and Rebecca Morrison Harris, was the brother of Judge Edward Harris of Newbern, NC. Judge Edward Harris died intestate and had no children. James Harris who married Susannah Gass died in Franklin County, Tennessee. Judge Edward Harris was a large land owner, and many deeds are of record with his heirs signing. Ann Gary
Dear Harrris-Hunters, This is in reply (or in addition to) the message from A. Gary. This info may totally confuse what he has gathered. As we all know, chasing Harrises is not the easiest job in the world. About William LaBach, last I heard, he is webmaster of the MAD-KY rootsweb, and also, as I remember (met him years ago, as we are distant cousins) he is a practicing attorney in Lexington, KY. Were I researching this person, James Harris, more intently, I believe I would order to my local LDS Family History Center films of Madison Co. probates (or court records) concerning this time period. Here goes. You may use this material in your own research, but IF I have given a source, please cut and paste that source along with your research. If someone cannot replicate your research, then your research is *hearsay* and not good evidence. E.W.Wallace descend. of Christopher's child Overton Harris (d. 1827) and Nancy Oldham JAMES HARRIS II. WIR 348 James Harris is the son of Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord. His birthdate of 1770, apparently unconfirmed, is taken from DAR application 598925. Those of his siblings and most of the marriages are given, indicating the applicant MAY have used a Bible record. A James Harris appears on the Albemarle Co. 1786 Personal Property Tax, Tax List A, District of Thomas Garth, Commissioner. However, if the 1770 birthdate provided by Wm. A. LaBach, of Lexington, KY, a descendant of the Harris family, is correct, then he was young to have so much property. This may be another James Harris. In fact, the James Harris of Albemarle Co. is more probably a son-in-law of Robert Harris (Major) of Albemarle and Louisa Cos., VA and thus a brother-in-law of the older Christopher Harris, who also appears on the 1787 tax list of Albemarle Co. James self 1-6-8-9-21 (Source: Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman Love, THE 1787 CENSUS OF VIRGINIA [Springfield, VA: Genealogical Books in Print, 198?, LAFHC 975.5 X2s 1787, V. 2) According to William LaBach, the younger James Harris, son of Christopher was married to Susannah Gass and he died 1798. The marriage listed in Vockery & Vockery is as follows: (Most of the time, the name of the bride is spelled Gass.) Harris, James & Goss Susanna, 1 Dec 1790 (date of bond); James Goss, bondsman; return 2 Dec 1790. Is this another James Harris? The relationship of James Harris to Agnes [McCord] Harris and the deceased Christopher Harris the elder cannot be easily be deduced from this deed of 1798. It is unknown whether this Christopher's son James Harris, or whether it may be his brother-in-law, James Harris. The evidence is strong is that he is Christopher's son. Earlier today, I posted to Harris-Hunters some biographical info re James Harris, one of the sons of Christopher Harris of Albemarle Co., VA and later of Madison Co., KY, where Christopher died testate. This tiny bit refers to the wife of James Harris--Suannah Gass, who father was an early pioneer of Madison Co., KY. I have added information about Susannah Gass's father, long an associate of the Harris family of colonial Albemarle Co., VA and later of Madison Co., KY. Corrections and additions are invited If you have info to add, please post to Harris-Hunters, where we can all share. SUSANNA GASS. Susanna Gass [transcribed as Goss] married James Harris 1 Dec 1790; James Gass was bondsman; return 2 Dec 1790 (Bill & Kathy Vockery, MADISON COUNTY KENTUCKY MARRIAGE RECORDS, VOL. I, 1786-1822 [Richmond, KY: Published by authors, 1993], p. 37) Information that she was spouse of James Harris comes from W. H. Miller's GENEALOGIES. (Editors' note: Incidentally, this hefty book by Miller has flawed information in some cases, most particularly aboutthe Oldham family of Otter Creek area, earlier of Caswell Co. NC and earlier of Orange Co. NC. Miller has mixed up the North Carolina Oldhams with those seemingly unrelated Oldham family members of early Louisville KY (Fayettte Co) area. Most probably they had common roots in colonial Northern Neck Virginia, but to date this researcher of many decades has not been able to locate such documentation.) Susannah Harris is named as one of the numerous children of David Gass in his Madison Co., KY will of 14 April 1806, which was proved 5 May 1806. Refer to bio of her father for a list of her siblings and the name of her probable mother - Sarah Gass. DAVID GASS Rev 1/2003 Added to Nov 2007 DAVID GASS. (d. 1806, Madison Co., KY) Little is known of David Gass. His family probably was earlier of colonial Hanover Co., VA and possibly later of Albemarle Co., VA. A Richard Gass obtained a land patent in Hanover Co., VA 1739-1741. Perhaps David Gass was related to Richard Gass. Oct 2007 from LVA website Gass, Richard. Publication 20 August 1741. Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41. Note Location: Hanover County. Description: 272 acres on the north side of Little River in Saint Martins Parish, adjoining Robert Sheldrake, and Stephen Pettus. Source: Land Office Patents No. 19, 1739-1741, p. 1093 (Reel 17). David Gass's name, and that of John Gass, apparently his son, appear on a petition to divide the county of Lincoln [Kentucky, but then a part of Virginia] into three counties, Lincoln, Mercer and Madison. 1786. Granted "Many of the signers of this petition were at Boonesboro," states the compiler. (Katherine Phelps Caperton, "A Partial List of Those at Fort Boonesborough," in THE REGISTER OF THE KENTUCKY STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL. 23, p. 151 [renumbered, it seems, from original].) He was a witness to a deed of Caleb Calloway and his wife Elizabeth of Campbell Co., VA to Christopher Harris, grantee, Madison Co., KY dated 6 Oct 1790 (DB B-360). Gass appears on Madison Co. KY tax lists from time to time from 1787 to 1799. Some years his name does not appear, probably meaning he was delinquent or else paid his taxes in another Kentucky county. Other Gass males who appear: John, also 1787 to at least 1795; Thomas, 1789 & 1791; William, 1799. He died in Madison Co., KY between 14 Apr and 5 May 1806. The first date is the date he wrote his will, and the second date is when the will was proved. In the abstracted will, he names his wife Sarah. His named children were Susannah Harris; John, William, James [with assumed surname of Gass]; Mary Black; Thomas [no surname] Margaret Mitchell. Son-in-law John Mitchell. Gr.son James Mitchell. Ex: wife, sons John and James. Wit: Richard Gentry, John Reed. (J. Estelle Stewart King, Abstract of Early Kentucky Wills and Inventories (Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969), p. 163) Comment: Richard Gentry was married to a daughter of Christopher Harris the elder. Susannah Gass was married to James Harris, another child of the elder Christopher Harris of Madison Co., KY. Some Virginia Records There is a reference to a neighbor of William Harris of Hanover Co. in his patent of Aug 1745 on the N. side Saxons Sw near the Rod [Road]... adj the sd. Harris, Davis, Gasse/Gass, Robert Shildrake, Charles Yancey, John Field & John Williams. (Dennis Ray Hudgins, CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS, VOL. FIVE, [Richmond: Virginia Genealogical Society, 1994], p. 98) From Albemarle Co. VA Deed Bk 2-143: 14 Jun 1759 David Glass [Gass?], planter, to Wm. (Shelton's wife was a daughter of Major Robert Harris of Albemarle Co. but earlier and later of Louisa Co., VA. This land record indicates Gass was a neighbor of Robert Harris and also of some of the families into which the Harris children married. In-laws of some of the Harrises of Albemarle Co., VA and earlier of Louisa Co., VA: Shelton, McCord) Kentucky Records The name of David Gass appears in a list of men in the company of Captain John Holder, in Madison Co., VA but later KY near Boonesborough June 10 1779. This appears in Lewis Collins' History of Kentucky. It is unknown whether David Gass was married when he first appears in the Kentucky records. His wife's name may have been Mary, instead of Sarah, as the name Mary Gass shows up in the court records of Madison Co., KY May 1792; she apparently was a witness for James Stephenson. (Gass did have a daughter named Mary, whose married name in 1806 was Black.) David Gass was early in Kentucky as reflected in Lincoln Co., KY (then Virginia) court order books, Lincoln Co., KY which was the parent county of many other Kentucky counties. On 22 Jan 1783, he was one of three appraisers appointed by the Lincoln Co. KY court to appraise the estate of Adam Caperton (COB 1-28). On 18 Mar 1783, he was appointed one of three commissioners "for the purpose of collecting the specific tax in this County." (COB 1-34) The following day, he and the other two commissioners, made bond. On 16 June 184, he recorded his stock mark, "a smooth crop in the right ear." (Michael L. Cook, LINCOLN COUNTY, KENTUCKY RECORDS, Vol. 2 [Evansville, IN: Cook Publications, 1988], p. ) "On the motion of David Gass, surviving Trustee of the town on [sic] Boonesborough, it is ordered that the Sheriff summon the freeholders of said town to proceed to the election of other Trustees in place of those who are dead and otherwise disabled by law." (COB 1-226) Gass was residing in Madison Co., KY in 1792, as his name shows up in Court Order Bk B: 6 Mar 1792: Ordered that David Gass sheriff make the necessary repairs to the prison in this County. (Jackie Couture, MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY COURT ORDER BOOK B, 1791-1801 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 2000), p. 15)

I think I have adequate documented proof that James Harris who married Susannah Gass was the son of Samuel and Rebecca Morrison Harris and is in Group 3. Christopher Harris did have a son James as he was named in the Will. In an attempt to once and for all correct this issue, I will be posting a series – starting with the Will of James who married Mary McIlhenny; some estate data, and a list of his children. This James was a son of Robert Harris and Dorothy Wiley. North Carolina Will Book C, pp 136-137 C.R. 065.801.17 WILL OF JAMES HARRIS State of North Carolina, Mecklenburg Co., Oct. 14, 1778. In the name of God, amen. I, James Harris, of the county and state aforesaid, being in perfect health and sound mind, in the exercise of my reason and judgment, but considering the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, I do hereby constitute and appoint this my last will and testament (hereby do revoke, make void and disannul all former wills and testaments made by me.) Imprimis: I commit my soul into the hands of a merciful Creator. Item—I commit my body to be decently interred in the earth, at the discretion of my dear wife and executors. Item—I order all my lawful debts and funeral expenses to be paid. Item—I bequeath to my dear wife four half Johannas in gold money and likewise 40 pounds proclamation money, her bed and bed clothes. I also bequeath to my dear wife during her lifetime the use of the plantation I now live on, together with all the implements, improvements and appurtenances thereunto belonging, likewise one negro fellow Lewis and one horse, she shall make the choice of, belonging to my estate. Also three cows and one 2-year-old steer and four sheep and one set of plow-irons. Also my household furniture, except what shall hereafter be bequeathed. And at her demise I order that the said articles (except one bed out of the a- bove, which bed I order to be given to my daughter, Jennett’s son Baptiste) be sold and equally divided among all my children. Item—I bequeath to my son Robert all my wearing apparel. Item—I bequeath to my daughter, Jennett, 100 pounds lawful money of the state, her bed and bed-clothes, her saddle and spinning-wheel. I also order 100 pounds to be put to interest, and the interest arising from said 100 pounds to be paid to her annually as long as she lives, and at her demise the said 100 pounds to be equally divided among all the children. Item—I bequeath to my daughter Mary 15 pounds, her bed and bed-clothes, her saddle and spinning-wheel. I also order that 100 pounds be put at interest, and that the interest arising from the said 100 pounds be paid to her annually as long as she lives, and at her demise the said 100 pounds be equally divided among all my children. Item—I order that 100 pounds be put to interest and that the interest arising from said 100 pounds be paid to my daughter Jennett’s son, Baptiste’s use, for his maintenance as long as he lives, and at his demise the said 100 pounds to be equally divided among all my children. Item—I order that what is over and above, or remains, of my estate after the above legacies are paid off, be sold and equally divided among all my children, viz: Robert, Samuel, Jennett, John, James, Elizabeth, William and Mary, and if any one of my children herein named should die before the above legacies are their property, I order that their children shall be heirs of the part of my estate herein bequeathed to their parent by me. I constitute and appoint Robert Harris, son of Charles Harris, and my two sons, Samuel and James, to be my executors of this my last will and testament, and I constitute and appoint Charlie Harris, Robert and my two sons, Samuel and John, to be guardians for my two daughters, Jennett and Mary, and for my daughter Jennett’s son, Baptiste. Harris is such a common name, that I admire your persistence. Your partial query is posted below. Richard Price asks: My Grandfather is Gillum Edgar Harris b. 24 March 1884 in KY, d 1936 in CO. His mother was Ermine Edgar b. Dec 1847 in KY. His Father was George Harris b.? d ? also of KY. George had a brother James who signed a selective service form for Gillum in Sept of 1918. It appears that George was deceased by that time as his mother was listed as a widow at her death also in 1918. Can anyone in this Harris group connect to this Harris line? I have no male Harris descendents to test DNA. Partial answer from a Harris-Hunter: Have you got some of the censuses pertaining to this family: 1890 (non-existent) 1900; 1910; 1920; 1930? And then back to *ancient history*. Tax records are good census substitutes. You may have to trace the movements of a sibling of your grandfather Harris. An important census: 1880 census. Do you know whether your grandfather, born 1884 in KY, had other OLDER siblings? Reason I ask: The 1880 US census, wherein each person enumerated was asked these two questions: 1) Where was your father born? 2) Where was your mother born? These clues should not be overlooked. They may hold some valuable information. My experience: My great-grandfather died in Texas ca 1881, the year after this 1880 census was taken. His widow was a much younger person, and she gave us his birthdate but named the wrong place in Kentucky as his birthplace. When I was informed that that part of Kentucky belonged to the Chickasaw Indians in 1818 (his alleged birthdate), I had to start looking elsewhere. (You have to learn some history--and geography--as you go along.) But Great-grandfather in Texas said his father was born in North Carolina (1880 census). His mother was born in Kentucky. This hinted that there must have been a Kentucky wedding prior to 1818, the birth year of my great-grandfather, whose eldest son was named Samuel John [John for maternal grandfather] Williams. But I used naming patterns to try to pinpoint where there might be Samuel Williamses (Williams is, amazingly, not as hard as Harris to pin down, unless the name is John Williams.) Samuel Williams is a relatively uncommon name among Williamses of early Kentucky. Luckily, as I am a book browswer, I picked up a book printed for the DAR concerning rejected Rev War pension claims. Here was a Samuel Williams. Well, it was worth my while to follow up on this clue, as flimsy as it may be. The Rev War pension claim was rejected because of lack of the soldier serving six months, but the claimant said he was born 1759 in Granville Co., NC. He filed his claim in Henderson Co., KY. So, I set about exploring the records of Henderson Co., KY, and found not one but two Samuel Williamses--one Sr. and one Jr. This cannot always establish a relationship, genealogists warn us. Furthermore, the two Samuel Williamses had married brides whose surname was Stephens--one a widow of David Stephens, who died after the French and Indian War, and the other bride not yet of age. The bride's guardian Samuel F. Williams gave consent for her to marry Samuel S. Williams in 1817. (Was she marrying her stepbrother? It appears that way, and he may have had a previous wife as there seems to have been an older son--one year older than my ancestor--at least the 1850 census on stated the age. (Well, the extended family had a letter written June 1845 from Columbus, KY, which is on the Mississippi River, and it was signed Aunt Ann D. Stephens. So, I wanted some material wherein these two surnames could be found--Williams and Stephens. Another older letter from an Illinois family also linked the Stephens family to my great-grandfather. Aha--there was a Stephens family of early date in Henderson Co., KY--and his first name was David, the name of my great-grandfather--and also of my Father. This was rather slim evidence, but a kindly person who was also interested in Williams families of Henderson Co, KY uncovered a bail bond (for debt) of the older Samuel F. Williams for the younger Samuel S. Williams. Would a concerned father go bail for a soon-to-be jailed debtor? Most probably. For the most part, tax lists exist for most of the counties in Kentucky. Does your Harris show up on a Kentucky tax list? Even if he owned no land, but he owned a horse, he would be listed. Increasingly, familysearch.org has wiki publications for how to research each state. Since most of our people before the 20th century were agricultural people, chances are your Harris had (rented or not) land to farm. (Not everyone had a distillery.) You need to explore all the records which exist for the time and the place(s) where your Harris ancestor lived. Yes, this takes time, but it sharpens your skills. Join a genealogical society, if you can. You will learn a lot. E.W.Wallace ________________________________
Please welcome new member Mary Lyn Paolella Does anyone have information to help her? Thanks Pat Harris to HARRIS-HUNTERS. I am researching a line in my family for Josephine Bowles. I have information saying her father was Joseph Bowles (b. 1828, m. Frances Gammon), whose mother was Caroline G. Hope (b.1802 ,m. Joseph Bowles), whose father was father Benjamin Burton Hope (b.1766, m. Elizabeth Anderson), whose mother was Temperance Harris (b. 1730, m. John Hope), whose father was William Harris (b.1700 m. to Elizabeth Burnett). Do you have any information substantiating that Benjamin Burton Hope was the son of Temperance Harris and John Hope? Hi, all, For some reason, I could not get Part 11 to get through to this HARRIS list; Pat Clare was kind of enough to post the information for me. Thanks, Pat! Here are more records from Cedar Creek, combined with a few from other sources. Pam ============================================= Brewer, op. cit. - p. 91: 11/11/1769. James HARRIS and Mary CHEADLES [CHEADLE] publish their intention of marriage. John HARRIS & Moses HARRIS appointed to inquire into his clearness. [James HARRIS was the son of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas HARRIS; Mary CHEADLE was the daughter of Thomas & Judith Woodson CHEADLE of Caroline Co., VA. John & Moses HARRIS were the sons of Daniel & Mary Hutchens HARRIS, and the grandsons of John & Mary Stanley HARRIS.] - p. 92: 14/4/1770. John BARNETT requested to be released from being overseer of of Jeneto [Genito] meeting. [Goochland Co.] [This record may have been overlooked by researchers of the Barnett & Hutchens lines. This is a record of a John Barnett of approximately the same generation as Strangeman Hutchens {1707-1792.} Recall, as cited in Benjamin Harrises, Part 11, I showed a young widower John Barnett with his three children, Athanatious, Anna and Martha requesting to join Cedar Creek Meeting in 1767. This younger John Barnett then married, in 1767, Elizabeth Hutchens. And then, John's apparent brother, Athanatious, requested to marry Jane Hutchens in the same year And recall that Strangeman Hutchens {Sr.} asked to be relieved as overseer of the Genito Meeting in Goochland County, VA on April 9, 1768. So the John Barnett in later this citation was NOT the same person as the John Barnett who married Elizabeth Hutchens, who appears to have been the son of this older John Barnett of the Genito Meeting in Goochland Co., VA, as was, apparently, the older brother of this second Athanatious Barnett. {This name was also been recorded as "Arthanatious.}] - p. 92: 14/4/1770. Moses HARRIS and Archaldus STANLY [STANLEY] appointed overseer of Cedar Creek in the rum of James CREW and to have the oversight of Jeneto [Genito] with John HARRIS. [Moses & John Harris, sons of Daniel & Mary Hutchens Harris; This particular James CREW does not appear to have been the same as the James CREW who married Judith HARRIS, the daughter of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas HARRIS.] - p. 94: 10/11/1770. Clark MOORMAN and Rachal HARRIS published their intention of marriage. He is desired to produce a certificate form the meeting he belongs to setting forth his clearness. 8/12/1770 Clark MOORMON produced a certificate from South River meeting. [South River Meeting was in Bedford Co., VA until 1782; afterwards in Campbell Co., VA.] [Rachel Harris was the daughter of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris.] - p. 94: 8/12/1770. John & Moses HARRIS appointed to attend the marriage of Clark MOORMON [Moorman] and Rachal HARRIS [Rachel Harris]. [There is no record in these minutes of the marriage of Clark & Rachel. Rachel Harris was the daughter of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris of Goochland, Hanover, & Louisa Cos., VA.] - p. 111: 13/1/1776. David BROOKS attended this meeting on a religious visit and produced a certificate from Newgarden meeting. Obediah HARRISS [Obediah Harris] attended this meeting as companion to David BROOKS from Newgarden. [Obediah Harris, the eldest surviving child of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris; his wife was Rebecca Johnson, the daughter of of David & Mary Moody Johnson. Obediah & Rebecca's children who did not survive to adulthood were: James, David, Unnamed daughter I, Jemima, Martha, David II, and Unnamed daughter II. The surviving children of Obediah Harris & Rebecca Johnson were: Sarah, b. 1762, m. Richard Mendenhall; Benjamin, b. 1764, m. Margaret Ingles; Molly, b. 1768; Rachel, b. 1770, m. Abijar Jones; Obediah, b. 1774, m. Maris Marshall; Rebecca, b. 1780; Judith, b. 1784, m. Mr. Cook; and Elizabeth, b. 1784 {twins} {Bible of Obediah & Rebecca Johnson Harris} {Davis, op. cit., p. 468.|] - p. 82: 13/12/1776. James CREW & Thos PLEASANTS, John HARRIS & Strangeman HUTCHENS appointed to collect the sentiments of friends concerning the slave trade. - p. 20: 11/12/1784. Jeremiah HARRIS hath sold a slave which we believe to be an iniquitious practice & contrary to our discipline, we disown him. [Jeremiah Harris was the son of Benjamin & Sarah Dumas Harris. He married, 1765, Anne Cheadle, the daughter of Thomas & Judith Woodson Harris of the Golansville/ Caroline Meeting. She was the grand-daughter of John & Lettice Southerne Cheadle.] - ============================================ [END OF FILE] ============================================

Pat, I'm not sure on the birth year for this Frederick Harris. My earlier records show him as born circa 1745 and died Jan. 1800, but the birth date could be wrong. He is married to Elizabeth Overton "Eliza" Terrell, b. UNKNOWN, d. Bef. 1800 (she is not mentioned in his will). Children listed in the will are: Richmond, Richard, Charles, George, Frederick, Nancy "Ann" Harris (md. Thomas Holladay), and Jemima Harris (md. Overton Harris). William B. Harris is another son, not mentioned in the will. I have his full name as William Burnett Harris, b. Abt. 1762, d. 1782 in the Battle of Blue Licks, Kentucky. He was deceased prior to the writing of Frederick's will and was never married. I list Frederick as son of William Harris, Jr. (ca. 1703-1749) and Elizabeth Burnett (ca. 1707-Unknown). He is grandson of William Harris who married Temperance Overton. Frederick Harris served as a first lieutenant in the Louisa County Militia and furnished supplies to the army in the Revolutionary War. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index and in Virginia Public Service Claims, Vol. II, p. 626. --Glenn Gohr _________________________ From: PatCLARE@aol.com Date: Sun, 13 May 2012 13:47:47 -0400 To: harris-hunters@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HARRIS-HUNTERS] Frederick Harris from Louisa Co., VA in KY deeds Thank you, Glenn, I am trying to keep my files straight on this probable Group 6 family; This Frederick Harris can be place in Louisa VA records, and Dottie says he is born 1728 which means he is not a son of Temperance Overton, because she died 1716. These are some recent Harris names in my lineage...... My father was Harvey Milton Harris. He was in the Army in WWI. He was born in Mountain City, NV. and died in California. His father was Levi Harris, G father, Alvin Harris, GGrandfather Levi (as far as I can find) and GGGrandfather, Nathan Harris. Most of the family emigrated to what was Oregon Territory and became Idaho. Their residence is recorded as Bruneau, Idaho, which is located in the SW part of the state. They originally settled on homesteads, which were purchased by the U.S. Gov't. and turned into Duck Valley Reservation. The family then moved to Bruneau. My father married my mother, Grace Brown; d/o Charles Albert Brown and Elsie Lenore (Dinwiddie) Brown. Charles A. Brown was s/o Albert Brown and Adeline ? who were both born in Illinois and emigrated to what became Ontario, Oregon (actually their homestead was between Ontario and Vale, Oregon). Charles Albert Brown; s/o Albert and Adeline (Addie) Brown married Elsie (Dinwiddie); d/o Joseph Dinwiddie and Laura (King) of Walla Walla, Wa. Harris, and then Richmond Harris became heir at law. Could the "B." stand for Burnett? I show this Frederick Harris married to Elizabeth Overton Terrell. Is this how Group 6 is lining up for Frederick ? Thanks. Pat In a message dated 5/12/2012 10:25:52 P.M. Miller reached here Sunday night and were laid to rest in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery Tuesday afternoon after services at the residence conducted by Rev. A. C. McCorkle, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by W. O. Blount, pastor of the Baptist church. An account published in the Memphis paper at the time of her death is as follows: "Mrs. Mattie H. Miller, 69, wife of Dr. W. H. Miller, of Okolona, Mississippi died suddenly at Baptist Memorial Hospital at two o'clock Sunday morning after one week's treatment at the institution. Mrs. Miller's condition was considered satisfactory until Saturday morning when she suffered a relapse and sank steadily until the end. So unexpected was her death that it was impossible to get all members of the family here before she succumbed. Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, who for many years practiced medicine in Okolona; two sons, O. H. Miller of Memphis, Erskine Miller, three daughters, Misses Adele, Ann and Clementine Miller, all of Okolona, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of Overton and Ann Clark Harris and was born at Verona, Mississippi. Her ancestors came from Virginia and South Carolina and were among the early settlers of Mississippi. Many of them were there long before the Civil War. Her father died in 1884 at the age of 96 years and had come to Mississippi from South Carolina in early manhood. She was a descendant of Ben Harris, a Revolutionary officer, and the niece of Col. Richard Clark, founder of Verona. "Dr. Miller served during the last three years of the Civil War in Company K, First Mississippi Calvary, which was in Armstrong's brigade. He went through many notable engagements, among them being Franklin, Tennessee, Dallas, Georgia, and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he rode side by side with General Forrest in the charge against the Yankee lines. Throughout the war he was under Forrest's command and was captured at Selma, Alabama a few days before Lee's surrender." ********************************** Mattie Harris was the wife of William Howard Miller, M.
