Hello. Thanks very much to E.W. Wallace for the posting on Richmond Harris, and the follow-up message from Gary Wheeler. (Their messages are attached below). I'm not sure who the earlier researcher was who'd asked about Richmond (described in E.W.'s message), but I am a descendant of the Richmond Harris (who resided in Garrard County, KY) mentioned by Gary. Without going back and checking my notes extensively (too busy right now, in this hectic Holiday season), I think there were more than one Richmond Harris. From information shared to me by other researchers, it appears that the Richmond Harris who was in Garrard County was the son of a Daniel and Sarah Harris. Here's what I have: Daniel Harris, born in prob. Bedford Co, VA; died in Wake Co, NC. wife: Sarah. son: Richmond Harris, born 23 May 1762 in Bedford Co, VA; died 04 Oct 1852/3 in Morgan Co, KY. (Some of his children were born in Wake Co, NC, and some in Garrard Co, KY--he apparently moved around a lot). Richmond married Dulcene Spence in Wake Co, NC on 06 Feb 1782. One of the 10 children of Richmond and Dulcene was the Susannah (who married Benjamin Wheeler) mentioned by Gary. Another of the 10 was my great-great-great-grandfather James Harris, who married Sarah "Sally" Ham. As I mentioned, I think there have been discussions about their having been another Richmond Harris, and he may have been the one described in E.W.'s message below. Hope this helps. Thanks! Some months ago, a researcher was asking about a Richmond Harris, about whom I knew little. I have discovered Richmond Harris is a probable son of Frederick Harris of colonial Louisa Co., VA. I believe the researcher said Richmond Harris was of Garrard Co. Hope the following helps: An early Kentucky land record signed by Richmond Harris: "Ky. Land Office - VA Surveys, Bk. 11, pg. 87 - Wm. B. Harris and Jas. Overton's Hrs., assee [assignee] of Wm. Steward, assee, of David Tanner, assee of Emanuel Kelly, assee of Chas. Patterson, 1800 A. part of a 2000 A. entry, part of Treasury Warrant 10694, located in Mercer Co. on Kentucky River, adjoining Isaac Winston and Ann Poage, 24 Jan 1789. Richmond Harris assigns one-half of land in within plat mentioned to James Overton, Jr., and desires to register grant accordingly. 25 Feb 1789. /s/ Richmond Harris." The author adds: "Richmond Harris was the son of Frederick Harris of Louisa Co., VA, see Franklin Co. [KY] deeds." The deeds are not included in Vol. II of Ardery, the author. From Louisa Co. DB G-422 Frederick Harris of Louisa appts son Richard Harris, his atty. in fact to convey his KY lands, 4 Mar 1794. Frederick, then, had a son Richard, who was appointed attorney by not only his father but also by Richmond Harris. There were many other Harris males in Louisa Co., identities unknown. However, one suspects that they were interrelated. Other references to residents of Louisa Co. are found in these deeds or other records. Ct. Bk B, p. 98, 5 Sep 1798 [county not stated by author, but presumably Louisa Co.]: "Richmond Harris to John Overton of Fayette Co., KY, 250 A. located in Mercer Co. on South side of K[entuck]y River, consideration of $500.000. (Mrs. William Breckenridge Ardery, "Harris Notes," KENTUCKY COURT AND OTHER RECORDS [Baltimore: GPC, 1979], P. 170) PS Frederick Harris is probably a brother to my Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA and at times of Albemarle Co. Robert was a surveyor, a county official from time to time, a member of the House of Burgesses at times, and a vestryman of Fredericksville Parish. James Overton is probably a kinsman, as the reported parents of both Robert and Frederick are William Harris and Temperance Overton (latter died 1716). E.W.Wallace ______________________________
