John Harris (his mark) Signed, Sealed, published and declared by the aforesaid, John Harris, as and for his last Will and Testament in prsence of us who subscribe the same as Evidences in his presence, at his request, and in the presence of each other John Webster Robert Vermillion Burch Vermillion RICHARD AND SUSANNAH (BROOKE) RATCLIFF Copyright 1987-1997 by Dodie Elizabeth (Smith) Browning- all rights reserved Richard Ratcliff, the father of Elizabeth Ratcliff Steele, was born in Charles County, MD. 1725- 1729. He was the son of Richard Ratcliff and Mary Anne. Mary Anne was possibly a Hatton. Richard Ratcliff, Sr. was born 16 December, 1692, to John Ratcliff and Bathsheba Harris. John and Bathsheba lived on the Wicomoco River in Charles County, MD. Richard Ratcliff (Sr.) died in 1732, at age 42 and his wife had remarried to Abel Wakefield by 1733. (Mary) Anne died prior to Wakefield and he remarried after her death. Richard Ratcliff, the father of Elizabeth Ratcliff Steele was an educated man and was a tobacco farmer. Elizabeth Steele's mother was Susannah Brooke, the daughter of William and Margaret Thomas Brooke. Susannah was married first to William Waters, and had two children prior to her marriage to Richard Ratcliff. He mother, Margaret Thomas was the daughter of George Thomas (b. 1674, d. 1734). George Thomas was born 1674 and died between Nov. and Dec. 1738,the son of William Thomas (d. ca. 1691) and his wife Susannah. Susannah Thomas was the grand daughter of John Courts, but it is not certain at this time whether she was a Courts, a Barrett, or a Dunn. This Susannah was born 1660 and died in 1723/24. William Brooke, the grandfather of Elizabeth Ratcliff Steele died in 1740. His parents were John Brooke and Margaret (last name unknown at this writing.) Bathsheba Ratcliff, the great grandmother of Elizabeth Ratcliff Steele was born between 1670-1675 in Charles County, Md. to Thomas Harris and his wife, Mary Pope. Mary Pope was the daughter of Francis Pope (d. 1671) Bathsheba Harris Ratcliff's father, Thomas Harris, was the third Boy in his line to carry the name of Thomas Harris. Her father died between 1684-1686 in Charles County. He was the son of Thomas Harris, who died in 1662. His grandfather was also Thomas Harris and I have no dates of birth nor death for him, but he more than likely was the immigrant Harris Ancestor. If all of this has completely confused the reader, be patient and you can sort it out. It took long hours of study and many rolls of microfilm to put it all together. I worked on this alone and can state categorically that the information is factual. Now back to the parents of Elizabeth Ratcliff Steele. I was able to trace Richard And Susannah (Brooke) Ratcliff through Susannah's inheritance of a tract of land called Dover. All of the above people had at least two marriages and as could be expected, Step fathers gained control of the wife's estate each time and the children were left out. Margaret Thomas was apparently a strong woman who came from "old money" and she made sure that she protected the rights of her only children by William Brooke. There were two little girls by that union, Susannah and Charity. Margaret remarried to Benjamin Munkster and old Ben thought he was going to trade away the children's rights. Charity married to a Jones and of course Susannah married our illustrious ancestor, Richard Ratcliff. Margeret refused to allow her new husband to control her children’s inheritance. That is how Richard Ratcliff obtained "Dover." He and Susannah owned half of the tract by 1759 and Charity and (Sam or Charles) Jones owned the other half. In later years, The Ratcliffs and Joneses were in court battles over the title to the land. This is what was referred to in Fairfax County records as the "Valuable Estate in Maryland." This was a profitable tobacco plantation and when Richard remarried and moved over to Virginia (across the river) he left his son John in charge of his plantation and slaves in Maryland. One of the sons died (Thomas or Edward, which may or may not be one and the same) leaving a daughter, Sarah Ratcliff. Apparently her mother died very young too, because she lived with her Aunt, Anne (Susannah) Farr, the widow of Samuel Farr, (died Nov. or Dec. 1771 ) This left "Dover" to the only other son, John Ratcliff who remained in Charles County until he died. The land then went to John's children, who were all in Maryland as late as 1808-1810. Richard had a sister Mary and a brother, John. John was his neighbor in Fairfax County, VA. He may have had another brother, Edward who died in Louden County, VA.
I have a application for a Social Security Number for Grace E. Harris. I was drawing at straws hoping this would be my great Aunt, but it wasn't. So many people have helped me. Her maiden name was Grace Estella Rogers Born July 8 1889 Father Perry Rogers, Mother Rosa Elizabeth Burris. Grace was born in Vernailles MO. Hi again everyone, SUCCESS! :) The URL for the publisher of the above mentioned book is <http://www.clossonpress.com>. I've received quite a few messages from people wanting to know if Ms. Teibel has done other surname-letters other than the 'H'-names. As far as I know, only the 'H' names have been done. I can add though, that she is working on the 'M' names now and is scheduled to do the 'S' names next. I believe she wants to do the entire alphabet of surnames. Colleen
Hi everyone, This is an "I-thought-you'd-like-to-know" message. :) I just found out about a new book, "Medina Co. [Ohio] Pioneers, Surname H," that's supposed to be published by Clossen Press sometime in the next 6 months, hopefully January. (An exact publishing date can't be given because of the 11 September attack causing the publisher to get backed up.) It was compiled by Beverly Teibel and will cost about $24.00 plus $4 shipping and handling. Clossen is taking advance orders now. A friend sent me a copy of the index and one of the pages from the book. If you're looking for someone from Medina County, Ohio and the surname begins with the letter 'H', then this is one you're probably going to want to get. [And just for the record ... no, I have absolutely nothing to do with this book, its compilation or publication, nor Clossen Press.] Following are a few chapter headings listed in the index [keep in mind they're all for Medina County, OH and surnamed 'H': Newspaper articles 1850-1906 Inscription from Westfield Cemetery Common Pleas Court records Obituaries Marriages Cemeteries Real estate transfers Pre-1850 marriages Chatham Township vital records [birth, death, church] If you think you might be interested, here's how to contact Clossen Press: Clossen Press R.D. 2, Box 373-A Apollo, PA 15613 I don't have their phone number, but someone else here might. If you have questions about the book past what I've already related, I'm afraid I can't help you. Like I said earlier, I have nothing to do with the book other than the fact that I found out about it and thought you'd all like to know as well. I wish you all a weekend filled with inner peace and contentment. Colleen
My 4th g.grandparents appear to be William Harris who was born in England 1747, married Elizabeth Longford born in England 1750. They were married in England and came to this country and to this town (Lunenburg, Worcester Co., Mass.) in 1776 or '77. They lived on the southern slope of Flat Hill, near the head of the present Shirley Reservoir. He died 10 Oct 1800, age 53. She died at her daughter's in South Reading 4 Jan 1819, age 70. Among their children born in Lunenburg was my 3rd g.grandfather Daniel Harris, who had a daughter Mary said to be born 29 Feb. 1815, (even thought that was not a leap year), who married my g.g.grandfather Leonard Cole in 1836. I would like to know where in England that they came from. Someone did a lookup on English marriage records and found a record of a man named Longford and a woman named Harris who lived in Wiltshire, England, and he suggested that that would be a good place to look for a record for my Harris-Longford marriage. Is anyone else researching this line? I put what I know about them on my website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bbunce77/Harris.html Thanks in advance. bb
Phebe Harris b 1798 (b GA?) is shown on the 1850 Sumter Co., GA census with no husband and with the children shown below. Who was her husband, does anyone recognize any of these people? Hi, All-- I am still looking for William Washington HARRIS. He was born in Georgia 28 Jan 1820 and died in Coosa County, AL 27 Apr 1910. He married Elizabeth Ann CLANAHAN 28 Aug 1847 in Coosa County, AL. Elizabeth was born in Georgia 1 Nov 1828 and died in Coosa County, AL 8 Oct 1872. Both are buried in Providence Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Coosa County, AL. William and Elizabeth had the following children: Oscar F., William Cornelius, Henry A. J., George Franklin [my third great grandfather], Newton C., Rufus Marion, Erastus H., Susan Olive, Mary Elizabeth, James Virgil, and Edward. I have a little information on this family and I would love to have more, but I am particularly interested in finding the parents of both William Washington and his wife Elizabeth Ann CLANAHAN. (I believe Elizabeth's folks must have come from SC. I don't know about William. They were both born, however, in GA.) Any help will be greatly appreciated...believe me. walt boswell walterboswell1@knology.net Montgomery, AL
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Jean HARRIS taken at the E.M. Snipes Studio in Anderson, South Carolina. The photo was probably taken in the 1880's or 1890's and Jean appears to be 4-6 years of age at the time. I'm wondering if this might be a photograph of Jean HARRIS b. Anderson, SC, daughter of James Calhoun HARRIS & Annie Perry MCFALL. I'm hoping to find someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

HELP! I thought I had found my brick-wall gg-grandmother Susan Harris DALE, but I was mistaken. Maybe someone on this list can help me sort out these DALE men and HARRIS women. Too much information!! **** Charles C. DALE - according to an IGI record, Charles C. DALE was born in Worcester Co Maryland on 23 May 1819. All census records found so far do indicate that he was born in Maryland about 1819. He died in 1903 while visiting children in Missouri Charles C. DALE married Susan HARRIS in Wilson County, Tennessee, on 27 October 1838 (marriage bond signed). Charles C. DALE and Thomas SCOTT signed the marriage bond. The text of the bond indicated Susan HARRIS was a resident of Wilson County, but didn't indicate the residence of Charles DALE or Thomas SCOTT. Charles C. DALE married his second wife, Tamazine Finley JONES, Nov 1848 in Fannin Co TX . They were living in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, in 1850, then moved to Red River County, Texas. **** John P. (possibly Pitts) DALE, born 3 August 1816 in Maryland or Tennessee, depending on the census record used; died 14 April 1887 in Red River Co TX. John P. DALE married (1) Elizabeth R. HARRIS in Wilson County, Tennessee, on 24 June 1840. Charles DALE signed the marriage bond. Elizabeth was born ?? in ??, and died about 1846 in Red River Co TX. John P. and Elizabeth R. Harris DALE settled in Red River County, Texas. When Elizabeth died, John returned to Wilson County, Tennessee, and married (2) Adaline Howard CRADDOCK on 5 July 1847. He and his new wife then returned to Red River county. Adaline Howard Craddock DALE was born in ?? about 1825 and died in 1911 in Red River County, TX. **** Thomas H. DALE (b. ??, d. ??), said to be the brother of John P. DALE, also married a Susan HARRIS (b. ??, d. ??). According to an IGI record, Thomas H. DALE married S. HARRIS in Lamar County, Texas, on 6 July 1848. According to deed records, Thomas and Susan DALE were in Lamar Co in January 1855, signing an agreement to sell land. Lamar County adjoins Red River County. **** IGI records and ancestral files that may or may not be relevant contain the following data: Thomas DALE was born in DeKalb County, Tennessee, which adjoins Wilson County, in 1817. His father was William DALE; his mother was Anne PITTS. NOTE: Charles C. DALE named his first daughter Sarah "Sallie" Pitts DALE and his only known son William DALE. Sallie Pitts DALE is my ggrandmother. ** Anne "Nancy" Postley [sic] PITTS was born in St. Martins Parish, Worcester County, Maryland, on 14 April 1784. Her father was Hillary PITTS; her mother was Sally PARKER (Hillary PITTS' 2nd wife). Anne Postly [sic] PITTS married William DALE in Worcester, Maryland, on 19 February 1803. She died in DeKalb County, Tennessee, on 13 September 1858. William DALE was born in Dekalb, Tennessee* on 4 May 1783. He married Nancy, surname unknown, in 1804 in Dekalb County, Tennessee*, and died in Dekalb, Tennessee on 25 September 1845. [*Birth and marriage in Dekalb, TN, may be based on his living there, and having no other information. Otherwise the names and dates are a pretty good fit.] ** Isaac Alexander DALE, born in Worcester County, Maryland, on 21 August 1791, married Catherine PITTS (apparently Anne Postley PITTS' half-sister) in Worcester County, Maryland, on 4 July 1815. Isaac may be the brother of William, mentioned above. Catherine Pitts was born 13 November 1798 in St. Martins Parish, Worcester County, Maryland. Her parents were Hillary PITTS and Catherine PURNELL (Hillary PITTS' 4th wife). Isaac Alexander DALE was born in Worcester County, Maryland, on 21 August 1791. His parents were Thomas DALE and Elizabeth EVANS (IGI record). According to a FamilySearch Ancestral File, Isaac Alexander DALE had brothers named Adam DALE, born 14 July 1768 in Worcester, Maryland; Thomas DALE, born 15 April 1778 in Worcester, Maryland; William DALE born 4 May 1783 in DeKalb, Tennessee; and John E. DALE, born 12 May 1785 in Worcester, Maryland. In a message board posting William is called Rev. William DALE and Adam DALE is referred to as the first settler of Liberty, Smith County, Tennessee. With all these correspondences in names and places, aside from the marriages and purported sibling relationship between John P. and Thomas H. DALE I have NO IDEA how these people fit together. There has to be SOME relationship, but I just can't find it!! Can anyone help me with these people?! Jo H. Virginia
