Dear Cousins, My computer crashed and burned a couple of weeks ago, so I have not been able to read any email for two weeks. If you have sent anything to me during that time, please resend it to this Compuserve address. I am going to be using my old Compuserve address for awhile until I can either get my computer repaired or get a new one. I am using my old relic computer but, since it is running the original version of Windows 95, it won't support the ATT program. Also, since this computer doesn't have Netscape on it, I haven't figured out how to get my ATT email yet, so, as I said earlier, if you have sent me anything in the past two weeks, please resend it. I will be going into the archives to catch up on everything. Thanks for being sweet, and I hope you are all have a very happy and productive year. Hope to have this all worked out very soon. Myra

"One of our oldest citizens passes away" "Aunt Julia Correll, widow of the late Henry Correll, died Wednesday evening at one o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alex O'Dell, after a lingering illness of many months. The deceased was born November 19, 1820, being at the time of her death, 77 years, 10 months and 16 days old. Mrs. Correll's maiden name was Bacholer, and was born near Washington, Indiana. She first married William P Ballou, and after his death married Henry Correll. Aunt Julia was a member of the M.E. Church for over fifty years, lived a Christian life, and was beloved by her many friends. She leaves two children, Mrs. Oliver Crooke and Mrs. Alex O'Dell. Several children have gone on before her to the other world. Rev., G.F. Culmer conducted the funeral services Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M.E. Church after which the remains were taken to the Walnut Hill Cemetery." "OBITUARY" "Clement Correll died in Clarksburg, Daviess County, Ind., December 18th, 1879, aged 59 years and 25 days . He was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio arriving in Clarksburg in 1859. The subject of this notice in life had endeared himself to all who knew him. In 1842 he embraced religion, and joined the United Brethren Church at Broad Run. His home for many years was a preaching-place in Ohio. He nearly always sustained an official relationship in the church. Truly it could be said of him, he did what he could. Though misfortune was his lot in business, yet few men sacrificed more for the church than Bro. Correll. He was a great worker in the Sunday School. During revivals his voice could be heard above the rest while singing those dear old songs. But he has gone over the river. It was a pleasant gale that wafted him over. Not soon will we forget his last days on this earth. Oh, his exhortations, his cheering words to those who visited him. He leaves a wife, three sons, three brothers, and five sisters to mourn. May heaven bless them." "Obituary" "At his residence, 101 E. Indiana Street, on Wednesday, October 1, 1884, Elder Peter Simmerman died, aged 28 years and 8 months. He leaves a kind and affectionate wife, two little children an a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his loss. Brother Simmerman made a profession of religion eight or nine years ago, and united with a General Baptist Church near Boonville. Two years ago he moved to Evansville(IN) and united with the Independence General Baptist Church. He attended the session of Liberty Association at Oakland City, Friday, September 19, and received a trial license to preach for one year with a view of becoming a candidate for ordination. Brother Simmerman was truly a Christian, practicing in his daily walk what he taught. Brother Simmerman was laid to rest in Locust Hill cemetery. On Sunday, October 5, 1884, at 10:30 am., services to his memory will be held In Independence General Baptist Church, Elder W H Ivey officiating. All the friends and acquaintances are cordially invited to attend. (Evansville, IN 10/4/1884)" "OBITUARY" Dr. Samuel Frederick Harris of our town, (my GGUncle), after a prolonged illness of cosumptionbrought on by kindred disease, died at his home on Main Street here in Odon, at 11 o'clock. Sunday afternoon at the UB Church a tribute to his memory was delivered by Rev., A G Scott and he was laid away in the Odon Cemetery. Dr. Harris was but 25 years old, but had been a sufferer from disease almost all of his life.He was a bright promising young man, barring his diseases. He was a member of the District Medical Society, members of which acted as pall bearers at his funeral. He died trusting in his maker." "DOCTORS DEBATING" "The Daviess County Medical District Society convened again here Monday March 4. The forenoon session was devoted to the discussion of medical topics in general. At the opening of the afternoon session, Dr. DJ Smith read before the Society a paper on the subject of La Grippe. It was good and reflected much light on our prevailing malady. It elicited much discussion.Dr W L Young followed wit a paper on the subject of Chronic Endometritis which was an able production and reflected credit upon its author. The session was a very interesting and instructive one. The Society adjourned at 5 pm to meet on Tuesday, April 1, with the following program: Treatment of Abortion-Dr A K Lane, discussion opened by Dr WL Young. Cholera Infantum-Dr S D Culmer, opening discussion by Dr D J Smith. This article attested to and submitted by Recording Secretary Dr. S F Harris. (Based on GGUncle Dr. HARRIS' DOB/DOD, this discussion had to take place sometime in the late 1880s or very early 1890s. I find their subject matter a true snapshot of medicine in post Civil War USA) "NEWS" "MAN KNOWN HERE, SON IS ARRESTED" "Jacksonville, FL, March 14- Arthur Vite, son of wealthy steamship Company owner in Bremen, Germany, was arrested here as an undesirable alien. It is said that he is an epileptic. It is alleged that Vite was smuggled into the United States on board an English tramp steamer and that he was confined for a time in a New York hospital under observation but escaped. Locally, relatives of the Vite family in Germany had nothing to say about Arthur except that he was known to them and that his father was a truly great man." HOPE THIS DOES SOME OF YOU SOME GOOD FRED

Second Annual West Harris Researchers Genealogy Swap Weekend A group of us who are West Harris (1715-1795) descendants are planning to meet again this year for a genealogy swap weekend on April 25th and 26th in Eldorado, Montgomery County, NC, which is where West Harris and Mary Turner migrated from Isle of Wight Co., Va. We will share research, visit local sites (churches, cemeteries, etc.) connected with this Harris line, and have an opportunity to copy or purchase pertinent books, maps, and articles. There will be a videotape presentation of Cricksea Manor and the Cricksee Estate (back by popular demand). You are welcome to and encouraged to bring cameras, laptops, copy machines, your research, and photographs. We will have scanners available, so bring your floppies, zip disks, or whatever storage medium you prefer. We are in the planning stages for this year's gathering which may include a Harris Family Reunion on the last day of the researcher's gathering and we welcome your input and suggestions. It is advisable to sign up right away because we are limiting the size of the researchers group. Everyone is welcome to the Harris Family Reunion on the final day. Our coordinator, Duane Hall, has set up a web site with lots of information on this Harris Line. You may contact him through the web site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~westharris/harris.html Ann Harris Williams Descended from West, Etheldred, Littleton, Elisha, Parthina, Margaret Mardecie (my grandmother)
My brick wall is my great-grandmother, Elizabeth HARRIS b. abt 1881 Pennsylvania (?) d. after 1930. I know that she married Daniel EARNEST/ERNEST and had two children, Myrtle EARNEST and Nelson Larue "Rudy" EARNEST (my grandfather). Rudy was believed to have been born in Great Falls, Cascade Co, Montana on July 26, 1914 (no birth certificate on file). Sometime around 1920, Elizabeth HARRIS EARNEST married her second husband, Fred FITZPATRICK. So far I have been unable to find birth records for Elizabeth and I am currently waiting for NY state to get back with me on a search for her death certificate. Elizabeth had a brother who my mother remembers as being "Uncle Al" HARRIS. We believe his full name was Albert, but that is not a definite! I am currently waiting for my grandfather's social security info to come in and maybe that will give me some clues. In the meantime, thought I'd throw this data out and see if anyone recognizes my great-grandmother or her brother. Thanks everyone! Hello everyone: Here are some 100 plus year old articles that I truly hope help someone and provide a smile or two. FRED "WELL KNOWN CITIZEN DIES" William Harris, a well known citizen of this place died from a complication of typhoid and pneumonia fever Monday afternoon, after only nine days illness. Mr. Harris was born in Brown Township, Martin County Indiana, Feb., 28, 1871. On March 4, 1894, he was married to Hettie James and to this union two children were born, one of whom is still living. He moved to Odon from Elmore township about four years ago, buying the William Sims property in East End. He was a member of I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges in this place which attended to the funeral in a body. He was 36 years of age. A wife and eleven year old daughter and several brothers and sisters survive him. The funeral services were held at the home at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Elder CH Buchanan in charge. Burial in Concord cemetery." CLAY CITY NEWS, AUGUST 23, 1912 Good, Homely, Meat Dishes "Buy a piece of round from the under half, as it is a bit cheaper and not so tender. For two pounds of the steak chopped fine, add a teaspoon and one half of salt, a quarter spoon of pepper, one small onion chopped; mix well and make into flat cakes. Place on woven wire broiler and cook over red coals, turning every eight counts until well seared over. Then cook more slowly until sufficiently cooked for the family taste." CITY JOTTINGS "Mrs. Flora Ben ham spent a few days in Terre Haute with her brother Charles Moody, members of his family being ill." "In spite of the stormy weather Tuesday evening, the Red Men's box supper was well patronized. After supper Mr. A. Ferry entertained all in the hall with his accordion." OBITUARY "Catherine Schauber, wife of Lewis Schauber, mother of the late Lizzie Schauber, died March 2 at her home. Mrs. Schauber suffered for many years with diabetes and was confined to her home for a number of months. Nine years ago she became a Charter member of the Pentecostal church of the Nazarene which she was a faithful member until her death." "Lena Harris the bright little daughter of Mr and Mrs Levi Harris (MY GGRANDFATHER'S NIECE), died of an appendicitis at 9:00 o'clock Monday morning after an illness of three weeks. She was eleven years of age and was an unusually affectionate and gentle and was loved by all who knew her. The funeral service was held from the Christian church Tuesday morning at 10:30 conducted by the Rev Charles W Farnham, after which the remains were tenderly laid rest in the Newberry cemetery . It was the most largely attended funeral in Newberry in many years. Lena Harris, Daughter of Levi and Lou Harris, was born May 31, 1892; died in Newberry at the home of her parents, February 22, 1904 aged 11 years, 8 months and 23 days. She confessed her faith in Christ and was Baptized May 3, 1903. During her last illness she told her parents that she loved Christ more than anyone else-even Papa and Mama. And she would wipe away the tears of her Mother's eyes and tell her Father not to cry: and tried to comfort them. She leaves her parents and a half sister and a half brother and grandmother besides a large circle of friends, who mourn her untimely death. But while we sorrow our hearts have this hope, that we shall meet again, in that better world where God shall wipe away the tears. The funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church, Feb., 23, by the Rev. Charles M. Farnham, in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors." UNION HILL "Died, Saturday, February 5, 1881 at the residence of Jacob Harris, son of the deceased, Mr Henry Harris (MY GGGGRANDFATHER), aged 77 years and three days. He was born in Mifflin Co, PA., and came to this state when seventeen years of age. He was married to Julianna Dietz, and they had eight children. The mother and four children died some years ago. Two of the children were present at his funeral and two are in the west. The youngest child of Jacob Harris is lying at the point of death. That's all for this time, but this man represents my "brick wall". I have so far been unable to find out who his parents were! Family oral history says that his father came from Leipzig area of Germany during the American Revolution. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. FRED
