    1. [HARRIS] THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL DENT 1755-1834 PART 1
    2. jomorgan
    3. I am not related to these people and have nothing further on them. This info from a book named PIONEER TIMES/July 1966 Vol. 10., NO 3 THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL DENT 1755-1834 Samuel Dent, according to census records, was born circa 1755, although his birthplace and his family ties have not been determined. Many Dent families settled originally in Maryland during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Some of these Dents are said to have emigrated from Yorkshire, England. Records in the Maryland Archives list a Revolutionary War service record of one Samuel Dent, of Capt. Clarkson's Company in the Charles Co., MD militia. Many of the Maryland Dents moved westward into neighboring Virginia. Courthouse records list a Samuel Dent in Henry and Franklin (formed 1786 from portions of Henry and Bedford) Counties, from about 1782, as the name appeared on a petition of inhabitants requesting that the county be divided and again on a land record in 1787. Oaths of Allegiance were recorded for Peter Dent and John Dent in 1777 in Bedford Co., Va. Samuel Dent married MARTHA (PATSY) HARRIS, daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier, HENRY HARRIS and ANNIE BIRD/BYRD of that! same area, although the Harrises had lived in pre-revolutionary war days in Orange Co. and possibly in Albermarle Co. Patsy Harris Dent was born 23 May 1770. Samuel Dent sold his 150 acres on reedy Creek in 1795 to John Dent, and by 1796, both Samuel Dent and Henry Harris were living in Madison Co., KY., and were listed on the annual tax list. In 1817, Samuel and Patsy Dent decided to head west and once again sold land, this time, 188 acres on Drowning Creek in Madison Co., KY. (Book M, page 212) A year later, the Dents were over in Franklin Co., MO. Many of the other settlers of Franklin Co., MO were familiar names from KY. About twelve years later, in 1830, Henry Harris, Samuel's father-in-law, being old and infirm, divided and deeded all his Madison Co., KY property to his children and grandchildren. Samuel Dent died in 1834 in Franklin Co., MO. The inventory of his estate was witnessed by John Goode, William Truesdell and C. B. Hinton. Alexander Chambers was executor of the will. The inventory contained notes on H. Fackler, A. Chambers, Samuel Beatty, Dyson Johnson, William Parks, John Harris, Prior Brauly and L. D. Walls. Securities of the estate were William Truesdell and Sion Pritchett. (Note: Anthony S. Garrett died in 1855 in Monroe Co., MO. Bailey Dent was a witness. Garrett (1850 census) lived with his grandson, John Truesdell. Perhaps the William Truesdell, mentioned above, was related to him). WILL OF SAMUEL DENT IN FRANKLIN CO., MO. In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Dent of the county of Franklin in the state of Missouri being now old and infirm in body but of sound mind and disposing memory knowing as I do that I must shortly die, do make constitute and ordain this my last will and testament and do hereby revoke all other wills by me made. The said Negro woman Milley is to be free at the death of my wife. Third, I give to my wife, Patsy, all my household and kitchen furniture. Fourth, I give to my son, Baley Dent, my negro boy, Bob. Fifth, I give to my son, Henry Dent, my negro boy, Tandy. Sixth, I give to my son, Josiah Dent, my negro boy, Johnston. Seventh, I give to my daughter, Lavina Beatty, and to her children, my Negro girl, Grace, and her issue forever. Eighth, I give to my daughter, Ann Parks, my Negro girl, Eddy, for her and her children forever. Ninth, I give to my daughter, Malinda Johnson (wife of Dyson Johnson) and to her children, my negro Fanny and her issue forever. Tenth, after the death of my wife Patsy, I give to my daughter, Olly, the Negro woman Raney, if she be then living and in case that said negro woman should be dead, then it is my will that Olly shall have out of the estate that may be left at my wife's death, the worth of said Negro woman, Raney. Eleventh, I give to my daughter, Olly, the west half of the north east quarter of section eight, Township forty three, Range one west, containing eighty acres, and also a forty acre lot being the north east quarter of the north west quarter of section eight in township forty three, range one west to her and her heirs forever. Twelfth, After paying my debts, it is my will that all the money I am now in possession of and that may be collected shall be kept and used by my wife as she thinks proper except so much as may be necessary to make the negroes before mentioned of equal value to each child. Thirteenth, It is my will that my executor cause the negroes to be appraised by disinterested persons and that a sum of money be given to each one to make them all of one value, the money to be taken from that which I have now on hand or may be collected. Fourteenth, I do hereby appoint Alexander Chambers executor of this my last will and testament and hope he will undertake the business and execute it strictly. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal the 8th day April 1834. Samuel Dent (his X mark) Signed and sealed and acknowledged in presence of William G. Owens E. B. 1. [HARRIS] Found portraits: Seeking living descendants of George Harris 1836-1903 MA
    2. I have run across two large, gorgeous charcoal drawings of George Harris and his wife Eliza Mary Scanlon Harris which a living relative in Orlando FL has put in a consignment shop to sell.  While that is their right, I hate to see these beautiful portraits out of their family. These approx 2x3 foot charcoal drawings were by artist William Lyndon and appear to have been drawn about 1890.  They are absolutely beautiful. I am not a Harris descendant, only a concerned family historian trying to find someone of this family who would want these portraits before they are lost to non-family persons.  I would only ask for reimbursement of my costs.  In ornate gold frames, the asking price is $300 for each portrait.  I will be open to negotiating a price without the frames which would be considerably less. Here is the pertinent information I have found on this family. George Harris b. July 1836 Rochester NY, died May 1903. 1. [HARRIS] More of my Great Aunt's Clippings and News from PA/OH/IN
    2. Hello everyone. Here are some more articles from my Great Aunt's scrapbooks. I hope they help someone. Thank you-FRED Fred's Family Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~findingyourfamily/fred.html "OBITUARY" "David H. Harris (my GREAT GRANDFATHER), was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, March 26, 1851. He and his parents moved to Indiana when he was a small child. He resided near and in Odon, Daviess County, until the fall of 1899, when he and his family moved to Indianapolis. He married Martha SOMMER, now deceased, June 11, 1880. To this union were born three children - Ed HARRIS, Mrs. May Clutter and Mrs. Lillian Grimes( My Aunt Lilly who saved all these wonderful scrapbooks and incuded some thing she inherited as well), all living at home now. He has four grand children living, and one deceased, and two great grandchildren. He has been as a father also for quite a number of years to his wife's niece, Cindy McBURNEY. He was a master carpenter by trade having followed that skilled craft as inherited from his German furniture maker ancestors. He followed that trade until a fall injured him and left him unfit for manual labor. He recently became a member of the Asbury Memorial Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Odon, Indiana. He depated this life Saturday, 1:25 AM, July 17, 1943, at his home, 223 Hiawatha St., after six months of suffering. Though his years were numbered even beyond four score years and ten, his mind remainded clear and active. After church services, he was interred in the HARRIS family plot in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. UPON THE EVENT OF HIS FATHER'S DEATH, HIS SON (MY GRANDFATHER) WROTE THE FOLLOWING...... (My Grandfather was a camping and outing buddy of Indiana's own Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley, so if there are similarities of style, I can understand) "A FAMILY MEETING" We are all we have Father Mother Sisters Brother Each chair is filled, we're all at home Tonight let no cold stranger come It is not often, thus around Our old familiar hearth were found So bless then the meeting and the spot For once let every care be forgot Let gentle peace assert here forever And kind affection rule the hour For we're all here. Even they, the dead, though dead, so dear Fond memories to their duty true Bring back their faded form to view How life through the mist of years We now see them as in time long past >From each to each, kind looks we cast We hear their words, their smiles behold They're round us, as they were of old This may not long of us be said For soon we too, must join the gathered dead Then by some other hearth, we shall sit around Oh, the that wisdom may we know Which yields a life of peace below So in this world to follow this And each repeat these words of bliss Bless God, we're all here---all here By Joseph Edgar HARRIS" " OBITUARY" "Joseph W. 3. I have posted several times before but the list is growing by leaps and bounds and so much good info has been posted lately i am in hopes that some one will recognize my Harris family and be able to help. here goes my Great Grandfather was Andrew Jackson Harris b: Tn Sept 7, 1858 according to his death certificate his father was David Harris and according to the 1900 Monroe Co. Ky census his father and mother was born in Va. the death certificate does not list a mother. In about 1885 Andrew married Margeret Ellen Blythe and their kids Elmore, John, Tim, William, Sarah, Bedford, Della and Zora were born in Tn and Ky.. seemed every other kid was born in Tn. except the last 3 who were born in ky. I know that by 1930 Andrew and Margaret lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, some or most of the kids ended up living there. I know that they lived in Cumberland Co. Ky and that Andrews Obit listed him as a member of the Tennessee Methodist Church. Andrew lived to be 1 month from 99 years old. He died in Jackson Co. Indiana in Aug. 1957 The 1900 monroe county census listed Andrew as being born in 1866 which was not true. I hope some one out there has an Andrew Jackson Harris that is unaccounted for or that may have moved to Indiana. I have been banging my head on this brick wall for a couple years now. HELP!!!!! My family coat of arms ties at the back....is that normal?

    1. [HARRIS] MYRICK/Mary THORPE/DeLOACH/LOTT, PIERCE and other connections
    2. <A HREF="http://mywebpages.comcast.net/DWBarham/Documents/chronology.htm">Barham Chronology</A> <A HREF="http://mywebpages.comcast.net/DWBarham/Documents/chronology.htm">http://mywebpages.comcast.net/DWBarham/Documents/chronology.htm</A> Hi, Liz and MYRICK, PIERCE, DeLOACH and DESLOGES, GRIFFITH and GRIFFETH, THORPE, HARRIS and LOTTCircle lists, You may already have seen this website but I am sure that there are some on the list that have not yet seen it so I am forwarding this information for those looking for info on the MYRICK/MIRICK family group out of Isle of Wight County, Surry County, Brunswick County, Virginia as well as the DeLOACH/DESLOGES, GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH, PIERCE, LOTT and others. And, please, if you have any corrections or additional information for this...please let me know. Thanks. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick - Barnett (See the following information) In this BARHAM CHRONOLOGY for which I have provided the link at the top of the page and the url, there are many, many connections to the MYRICK family. If you put this page into a file and then do a search on the page for the various names you will find much. One entry for Owen MIRICK spelling is the following: << *Southampton Order Book 1 1751, March 14 - Will if Timothy THORPE probated. Dated December 2, 1750 Daughter, Margaret, wife of James Bruce - negro girl Gilley Daughter, Mary, wife of Owen Mirick, 1 shilling >> and re: John MIRICK << 1760, September 10 - Timothy Thorpe, 40 acres W. Side of 3 creeks adjacent John MIRICK, James BARHAM.>> and << 1773, May 13 - Estate of John Myrick appraised by James BARHAM, Solomon DELOACH, Henry APPLEWHAITE.>> First of all, before I forget to go back to it, this Henry APPLEWHAITE would be a descendant of the Henry APPLEWHAITE, Jr., born: Bet. 1680-1690, md: Ann MARSHALL, parents of Priscilla APPLEWHAITE, born: Bet. 1710-1720, md: Bef. April 27, 1741 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, who married Nathaniel RIDLEY, II/Jr., born: Abt. 1698 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, died: Aft. October 20, 1758 in Southampton County, Virginia, who was the son of Elizabeth DAY, born: Aft. 1679 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and husband, (Captain) Nathaniel RIDLEY, Sr./I, born: Bef. 1679 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Elizabeth DAY was the daughter of Mary THOMPSON, (daughter of William THOMPSON,) and Mary's husband, James DAY, II/Jr., born: in ? in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, died: Aft. August 10,.1700 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, son of Mary BENNETT and (Captain) James DAY, Sr./I, born: in ? in England, died: Bef. 1668 in Virginia, and this BENNETT family married frequently into MYRICK and connecting lines as did the APPLEWHAITE/APPLEWHITE and DAY and THOMPSON families. (I don't know positively but I would suspect that this John MYRICK is the John MYRICK/MIRICK who was the son of the aforementioned Mary THORPE and Owen MYRICK/MIRICK and I show this John MYRICK/MIRICK born: Abt. 1735 and the Timothy THORPE mentioned is probably the Timothy THORPE, Jr., born: Abt. 1710, who was the brother of Mary THORPE and this Timothy THORPE, Jr. married Martha "Patsey" PETERSON in 1733 and while I don't know the names of Martha's parents there were many PETERSON and PEARSON/PERSON marriages inclusive of the PETERSON family group that was probably out of Isle of Wight County, Virginia that married into my LOTT family out of Isle of Wight County and in it there was the marriage of John PETERSON, Jr., born: 1790 in Effingham County, Georgia which later became Bulloch County in 1802, who married Elizabeth LOTT, born: April 25, 1793 in Bulloch County, Georgia, who was the daughter of Judith Delilah/Delia JONES, born: May 1771 in Orangeburg(h) District, South Carolina, died: 1848 in Telfair County, Georgia, and married on February 14, 1790 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and husband, Mark LOTT, born: January 22, 1769 in St. George's Parish which I believe was in Effingham County, Georgia, died: November 01, 1813 in Telfair County, Georgia or 1812 in Montgomery County, Georgia, and married on February 14, 1790 in Barnwell County, South Carolina. This Mark LOTT was the son of Sarah "Sallie" LIGHTFOOT, Abt. 1748 in Duplin County, North Carolina, died: August 01, 1818 in Tattnall County, Georgia or Washington County, Mississippi, and John (4) LOTT, IV, (RS,) born: Abt. 1742 in Duplin County, North Carolina, died: August 01, 1810 in Montgomery County, Georgia, who was the brother of my paternal 4th great grandfather, Absalom LOTT, born: Abt. 1758 probably in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, died: Abt. 1828 in Mississippi, and they were the sons of the John (3) LOTT, III that was married to Bethany ? whom some believe is the same person as Elizabeth JOYNER, born: Abt. 1720 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, who married John (2) LOTT, Jr., born: Bef. or Abt. 1720 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia who was probably the son of another John LOTT, born: Abt. 1680 in Isle of Wight Co., VA; however, some feel that the mother of John (4) LOTT, IV and Absalom LOTT who was Bethany ? is a separate person than Elizabeth JOYNER and that this Bethany ? married John (3) LOTT who was the son of Elizabeth JOYNER and John (2) LOTT, Jr., son of John (1) LOTT, Sr., born: Abt. 1680 in Isle of Wight county, Virginia and then there is also the possibility that Bethany ? was the 2nd wife of the John (2) LOTT, Jr. who married Elizabeth JOYNER. This lineage is pretty well sorted out except for the Bethany ? vs Elizabeth JOYNER question. And the Solomon DeLOACH mentioned above is probably the Solomon DeLOACH, born: Abt. 1712, died: Abt. 1797, md: Abt. 1740, who married Lucy BARHAM, born: Abt. 1720, died: Abt. 1790, who was the daughter of Sarah JUDKINS, born: Abt. 1710, (daughter of Martha ? and John JUDKINS,) and Charles BARHAM, born: Abt. 1706, died: Abt. 1791, md: 1727, (son of Elizabeth CLARKE and Robert BARHAM, born: 1678 in Virginia, died: 1759 in Southampton County, Virginia, (son of Elizabeth RIDLEY, born: Bet. 1624-1658, died: Abt. 1694 in Virginia, and Charles BARHAM, born: Bet. 1624-1658, died: January 1682/83 in Virginia. This BARHAM married into the NEWSUM and MYRICK and HARRIS families more than once as well into other connecting families. And this Solomon DeLOACH was the son of Jane GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH and Michael DESLOGES, Sr./aka DeLOACH/aka DeLOCHE/etc. who were the ancestors for the DeLOACH family group that married into my PIERCE family that with Elizabeth "Bettie" PIERCE, born: 1790 in 96th District, South Carolina, also married into the McCRACKEN - WILSON family that married into the PIERCE with Elizabeth McCRACKEN, (daughter of Elizabeth WILSON and David McCRACKEN, (RS,) whose daughter, Elizabeth McCRACKEN, married George PIERCE who was the brother of Elizabeth "Bettie" PIERCE and they were the children of Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) born: Abt. 1749 in Frederick County, Virginia, (where my EARLE family was about the same time,) who married my paternal 5th great grandmother, (Cherokee,) Sophia/Sofia HUNTER/aka TOTER/TOATER/aka possibly BOWLES. Something very interesting to me is the Jane GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH, (daughter of Rowland/Roland GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH,) that married Michael DESLOGES/DeLOACH, Sr. as it is entirely possible that she is related to the Sage GRIFFITH, aka GRIFFETH, born: 1521 in Bodorgan, Anglesey, Wales, who was the daughter of James GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH and his wife, Maud LLOYD. Sage GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH I'm sure you remember married John MEYRICK, I, born: Abt. 1513 in Llandachya/Llandegai?, Wales, died: Aft. November 30, 1538 in Anglesey, Wales, who was the son of our first of the surname MEURIG/MEYRICK/MERRICK/MYRICK ancestral name, Meurig ap Llewellyn/Llewelyn/aka Meyrick ap Llewellyn/Llewelyn, born: 1483 in Anglesey, Wales, died: 1538 in Bodorgan, Anglesey, Wales, and his wife who was Margaret/Margared verch Rowland/Roland/(Syr) Rowland/Roland. So, considering the names of GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH and the given name of Rowland/Roland I seriously think that there may be further connections for the GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH that married into the DESLOGES/DeLOACH that wound up marrying extensively into the MYRICK and connecting families and the GRIFFITH/GRIFFETH that married into the ROWLAND/ROLAND connection that married into the MEURIG/MEURIC/MEYRICK/MERRICK/MYRICK family lineage. This DeLOACH family also married into the KUYKENDALL/KUKENDAHL/etc. family and many of them moved into and through Mississippi and into Texas in the 1800s at the time that my PIERCE - MYRICK family stayed in Mississippi. Also, this DeLOACH family married into the GOODWIN family that married into the MYRICK family. And just the other day for the first time I saw a mention of (Governor) Huey Pierce LONG and (Governor) Earl LONG being descendants of George PIERCE. For sometime now I have suspected that they were related to my MYRICK - PIERCE family group but didn't know for sure nor how. My uncle, W. Spencer MYRICK, began his political career working for (Governor) Huey Pierce LONG and later Spencer was Senator and also he and my Dad worked for (Governor) Earl LONG. Still have to put those pieces into place but the other day someone mentioned that the connecting LANG family that married into BENTON that married into MYRICK may also be of the LONG spelling. And I don't know about the Elizabeth CLARKE mentioned above but I have descendance from Robert CLARKE/CLERKE who was born in Abt. 1688 in the area that became Edgecombe County, North Carolina...was that Bertie or Bath? and he married Jean ? and they were the parents of my paternal 5th great grandmother, Hannah CLARKE/CLERKE, who married Jacob UNDERWOOD, parents of Sarah "Sally" UNDERWOOD who married Lewis Lamkin HATTEN who were the parents of my 3rd great grandfather, William HATTEN, born: January 01, 1800 in Tar River, Nash County, North Carolina, who married Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT, born: Abt. 1802 in Alabama, who is the descendant of the HARRIS - JOYNER family that married into the MYRICK, GREEN, GRAYE and other connecting lines as well as the HATTEN and LOTT families married into the MYRICK and other connecting families in Mississippi including the PERSON/PEARSON mentioned earlier. and << *York Co., Va. Order Book 4, 1774-1784, p. 423 1783, December 24 - William BARHAM, wife Sarah, of Sussex, to BARHAM NEWSUM of Southampton - 247 L - 399 acres on Hornet Swamp adjacent to William Myrick, James Cornet, George Hoguewood, Rattlesnake Branch. (Part in Sussex, part in Southampton) Witnesses: William Myrick, Joel Newsum, John BARHAM, Howell Harris Proved by Howell Harris and Joel Newsum >> The aforementioned William MYRICK is probably the William MYRICK, born: 1743 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, md: January 16, 1772 in Southampton County, Virginia, (son of Anne THOMPSON and John MYRICK,) who married into the aforementioned BARHAM - NEWSUM family with his marriage to Lucy NEWSUM. Also, on this website there is mention of a BARROW family group and the name BARROW comes up often enough in conjunction with the MYRICK family group that I am constantly wondering whether or not this BARROW family was another name for the BARLOW family group that also married into the MYRICK - HERRINGTON - GRANTHAM - PARKER - AMMONS - STUCKEY - HOWELL - DICKENS - GRAVES - COPELAND - LOTT?/MIDDLETON? family that I descend from. There are quite a few other items on this website but I will stop for now. Okay, that's all for now. Bellinda
