    1. Pedigree Resource File now available at Family Search!!!
    2. Jan Hornick
    3. Received this on a mail list today! I thought you might wish to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has placed the fully-searchable Pedigree Resource File (PRF) online at the FamilySearch website http://www.familysearch.org As you know, these represent unlinked pedigrees submitted by individuals through the FamilySearch.org web site. The Pedigree Resource File entries appear as integrated results from the main search page, along with applicable IGI and Ancestral File entries, on the "Search Results" page. Although individual records show parentage and spouses (where available), as yet there is no pedigree function, i.e., there is no way to graphically show ancestry for an individual as is the case with Ancestral File. I checked the site and found my own file, submitted in August, integrated into the Pedigree Resource File. Sincerely, Cole Goodwin Family History Consultant I will be updating the FAQ shortly regarding this, so it will have this as part of the page about PRF. The PRF FAQ is at http://members.tripod.com/~Genealogy_Infocenter/prf-cds.html

    1. Increased Capabilities of FamilySearch - www.familysearch.org - November 1999
    2. Jan Hornick
    3. Searching for these Virginia/West Virginia surnames from the late 1700's through 1800's: Harr (John b. 1777); Merrifield (Samuel, b. 1720; Richard, b. 1747); Reed (Robert, b. 1802); Carpenter (John, b. Abt 1760); Capt. James Booth (b. 1709); Evan Thomas (b. Abt 1760); Capt. Samuel Stalnaker (b. 1682). I would appreciate any information you may have and would be happy to share my data with you. My e-mail address is GenJan@bewellnet.com Best Wishes! Jan Hornick, Denver (area), Colorado ********************* This information was received from another mail list yesterday: "Huge upgrade for FamilySearch" "From----http://www.desnews.com/dn/print/1,1442,135007623,00.html? Associated Press" "The world's biggest online genealogical collection is about to get bigger. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has added 240 million names to its 640-million name archive. The church maintains the runaway Internet hit 'FamilySearch.'" "The boost is the largest single upgrade since the Web site was launched last May. Site designers vastly underestimated the number of people that would use the Web site, which receives up to 10 million "hits" a day. Web site spokesman Paul Nauta argues those totals make FamilySearch the Internet's hottest service. ...by any measure, the church's site and its more than 300,000 registered users account for one of the Web's most popular stops. Todd Christoffersen, executive director of the LDS Church's Family History Department, said the latest names were gathered primarily from Western Europe, Scandinavia and Mexico and by themselves surpass the size of most other genealogical databases on the Web." "FamilySearch will continue to be offered as a free service, though church officials have hinted that some sort of fee may eventually be charged. In addition to other online archives, like the 35 million-name Ancestral File, FamilySearch plans early next year to index the new Pedigree Resource File, a database of family history records being transmitted or "uploaded" to the site by users." "The pedigree file, already listing more than 5 million names, is projected to grow at the rate of 1.2 million names per month. Family history has been an LDS Church priority since the its earliest days. The church officially began compiling genealogical records in 1984, primarily using the information in LDS temple ordinances. Today, the church maintains records of more than 2 billion people, safeguarding the information on millions of rolls of microfilm stored in granite vaults inside Little Cottonwood Canyon south of Salt Lake City." "FamilySearch can be found at www.familysearch.org on the Internet." ********************

    1. RootsWeb Gedcom Service - Gedcom for John Harr and Elizabeth Merrifield
    2. Janet G. Hornick
    3. Today I uploaded a Gedcom for five generations of descendants of my 4th great grandparents, John Harr and Elizabeth Merrifield. There are over 1000 descendants in a searchable/downloadable database. There are many surnames from the Marion, Taylor, Monongalia and Harrison County areas. Please consider adding your data to this easily accessible source. Many Thanks! Jan Hornick ROOTSWEB'S WORLDCONNECT PROJECT by Robert R. Tillman, CEO <rrti@rootsweb.com> We are proud to announce the BETA TEST of the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project. Now you can upload, edit, delete and download to others your GEDCOMs on RootsWeb. We have developed GEDCOM software that is the most advanced on the Web to provide you with unprecedented control over your posted GEDCOMs. Key features include the ability to: o Upload a GEDCOM file generated by any of the major genealogy software applications WITHOUT first converting it to HTML. o Edit or delete your GEDCOMs as well as change the display or download options at any time. o Link the GEDCOM to your own home page. o Screen or remove information about living individuals from the GEDCOM. o Link Post-Em notes both from the GEDCOM originator and other RootsWeb users by attaching to the record of a particular individual. This capability is similar to the implementation of Post-Ems in RootsWeb's Social Security Death Index. o Link a GEDCOM to other GEDCOMs using Post-Ems. o Allow RootsWeb users to download subsets (portions) of the original GEDCOM starting with a specific person and choosing either ancestors or descendants. o Display GEDCOMs online in highly flexible ways. We think that this display capability is where RootsWeb WorldConnect Project really shines. Unlike with certain other Web sites, you have full control over your GEDCOM. You can change or remove it completely at any time and RootsWeb will never burn it onto a CD-ROM or charge others to access it. Check out this new capability at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi>. Search for individuals listed in uploaded GEDCOMs at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi>. Beat the crowds. Upload your GEDCOM now, but please remember that this is a beta test. We will change features of the offering based upon your feedback. You can expect that there will be malfunctions, problems, delays, etc. during this test. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Submit your complaints and suggestions for improvements to the RootsWeb GEDCOM Suggestions Board at <http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/gedcom>. You might also want to thank Randy Winch, the author of this wonderful new RootsWeb feature. He has devoted months to this project. Kudos to Randy! * * *
