Jeff, I have a copy of Marsha Fuller's book, THE HARPER FAMILY HISTORY, 1713-1995. Page 8 has: "On August 11, 1750 the ship, "Patience" delivered Philip, Johann Nickel and Johan Jacob Herber (Harper) to the New World, arriving at the port of Philadelphia". This line of Harpers were "Herbers" from Germany. On p. 10, "At some point early in their life in America, the Herbers began to use the name of Harper on legal documents." Hope this helps.
