To all you Harper Researcher: Marsha L. Fuller's book, THE HARPER FAMILY HISTORY, 1713-1995 is a study of Harpers who came from Germany to PA. They were HERBERS who changed their name to HARPER after they arrived in this country. They settled in a part of VA which later became Pendleton County, W. VA. Source of Marsha's book: Evening Moonlight Press, 912 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742. One of the confusions about these Harpers is caused by the Scot Harpers who came to PA about the same time. To add to the misery for a genealogist, some of them have the same names. Some even came down the Valley of Virginia and ended up in NC. Those of us who have NC Harper ancestors have difficulty connecting unless we have family evidence. For example, I have always heard my Edgecombe County, NC line were Scotch-Irish. The English line from RAPH HARPER has all the names, but I can't prove a connection and who can fight what the family told you! And to think, RAPH's line has been searched rather well! It only takes one parent's early death , a war, or hard times to challenge a researcher out of his/her wits. For your Scottish, Scotch-Irish, and English Harper lines, you must search elsewhere. Hopefully, your family left you some good stories, and traditions which will give you clues! If they were Scots, I can assure you will recognize the (dare I say it) stubborn Scottish character! ---------- Beryl: I do not see a CATHERINE BASSLER m. ADAM HARPER in Marsha's book. I could not find an ADAM with those dates. Where did they live? Madeline: I sure am glad you are still on this list! Weren't your Harpers Scots? ======= I just wish all of us well and successful searching. Please keep the questions coming to the list. Sincerely, Nancy Harper Vick
My husband's family was from Pendleton County, WVA. I have just started researching them. The earliest I have anyone is Joshua Harper b abt 1803 m Catherine Conrad. Children:Noah, Christina, Miles, Peggy Jane, Asnetto and Elizabeth. Not much info on any but Peggy Jane who is my husband's ggmother. Would be glad to share any info if there in a connection. They remained in Pendleton Cty and still have relatives there although my husband's father came to Ohio in 1924. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Vick" <nvick@longwood.edu> To: <HARPER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 21, 2003 11:21 PM Subject: [HARPER] Fuller's Book > To all you Harper Researcher: > > Marsha L.
