Ireland>Maine>Mass>NY There are two renditions of my first American Harpers: 1) "James Harper and sons William, John, Joseph, and Moses emigrated to Topsham, Maine from Derry, Ireland 1718; moved to Concord, MA date unknown; moved to Oakham MA 1742" (Reference: The Settlement and Story of Oakham, Massachusetts" by H.B. Wright and E. D. Harvey) 2)"George Harper b 1710 in Tyron, Ireland of Scotch-Irish parentage, m Catherine M. Foster (or Catherine Boyd), and English woman. They emigrated to America in 1737 and settled in Oakham, Worchester County, MA, being one of the first settlers in that township." (from notes compiled by Edith May Chatterton before 1956) Perhaps both stories are true - James' son William may have gone back to Ireland and then William and his son George returned to America in 1737.
