My William A. Harper was one of the sons of Alexander Harper, b. 22 Feb 1744 in Middletown, CT. Because of the duplication of given names in the various Harper families, Alexander's sons agreed that they would all take "A" for their middle name, to differentiate themselves from the other Harper descendants who were all naming their children after other relatives. So, we have first Margaret Harper (no "A") who was born 12 Jun 1772, then John A. Harper, b. 30 Mar 1774, James A. Harper, b. 6 May 1776, William A. Harper, b. 19 Jul 1779, Elizabeth A. Harper, b. 24 Feb 1784, Mary Harper, b. 24 Mar 1786, Alexander, Jr., b. 3 Sep 1788 and Robert A. Harper, b. 16 May 1791. The wife of Alexander and mother of these children was Elizabeth Bartholomew (also known as "Betsy"). Elizabeth was b. 13 Feb 1744 in Bethlehem, NJ and was the 11th of 16 children b. to John Bartholomew and Dorothy Endt. As for William A. and Sally Robinson Harper, they had 7 children (one infant daughter did not survive). Their children were Charles Harper, Malvina Harper, Henry Harper, Robert Robinson Harper, Sallie Harper and Polly Harper........but, sorry! no more William A's. If you have further questions, please let me know.......and thanks for writing.
