A SPAM is junk mail of the electronic variety. Someone who's selling something gets ahold of a large mailing list, one whose recipients may or may not be interested in the product being sold, and blast it out there. It's a terrible waste of resources (computer space, personal time, etc) for everyone involved. But those that perpetrate must gain something from it, because it's very common...
