I am searching any HARPER connections who settled in NC & VA. So far, I have quite a collection on the following (and others): 1. MY OWN GREAT GRANDPA whose ancestry we have been unable to prove: STEPHEN H. HARPER (1823/23-1891) m. (1) 1846 NANCY HAINEY, Edgecombe County, NC; (2) 1878 Mahala Morgan. Believe he had a sister, Martha who married 1852 LITTLETON PENDER in Edgecombe County, NC & he may have been a son of JOHN HARPER. 2. SAMUEL C. HARPER (1853-1928) married Mary C (?)(1861-1918); lived & died in Charlotte County, VA 3. SAMUEL T (?) HARPER (1826-1910) who married (1) Temperance and (2) Martha Gay (I have confusing information on this Samuel Harper.) POSTSCRIPT: the List messages become very long & messages are duplicated when members post "reply". Would it help if replies are used only when they related directly back to the messages, or post a new reply?
As far as I know my Harpers were from Frederic Co, VA. My stone wall is Bryant Harper, b. 1816, (where ?); Married Nancy Jones, B. Jan 12,1818 in NC. They were married in Johnston, NC. on Feb 18,1839. Don't know what happened to her, but Bryant was remarried about 1849 in Johnston, NC to Rachel Avera, b.1814, don't know where. They had 3 children born in Smithfield, NC. They all came to Memphis, where the parents died of Yellow Fever, and the children were placed in an orphanage. I can find no Bryant Harper in any linage. He must have had parents! Any help? Peg

I will point out first, although many will probably do so, the Census prior to 1850 only listed Head of Household. Just the way it was done. No fault of Ancestry.com.
I just discovered that my LDS does have ancestry.com access. Which I did for about an hour yesterday and had fun doing. I can't promise much, but I'd certainly be willing to help where I can. I noticed though that the census doesn't seem complete on ancestry.com when I tried to find the Father to my Louis Gunn Harpers wife Hannah Rettie Cyphers. Only Paul Cyphers I found was in the 1830 and that didn't give the names of children, just the head of the family. What gives with that? Anyone know why the 1830 census came out that way? Wow Kaylynn, aren't you the CD guru! I'll keep you in mind. Hi KayLynn, Thanks for the Clay County material. And, thank you for the look-up offer. My HARPER most wanted: William and James HARPER from Tennessee migrated to Johnson county, Illlinois ca 1830-2. James HARPER and Rhoda ?? 's daughter, Polly, married Richy OLIVER in Johnson county in the mid-1850s. They were my 2nd great grandparents.
