In response to Linda McDaniel Smith, My husband's grandfather's name was Joseph Caswell Harper. His family came from Virginia (Robert Harper & Margery Payne). But for the life of me, I can't seem to make a connection to any other Caswell Harpers. There was a Caswell Harper b.abt 1846 in AL (son of Wilkins Harper, b.1811 GA)in Perry County, AL that moved to Texas (I have a copy of his civil war pension application with the State of Texas.) There is also a Caswell Harper who married in Knox County, TN. My son has carried on the name. I hope I can connect it to the source. Any suggestions? By the way, I have applied for a Harper Research Website at rootsweb and am waiting for confirmation. I'll keep you posted. I think it would compliment the HARPER-L. Thanks, Gayle Harper
Cynthia - I'm finding so many Harpers in AL, it's making me dizzy. I havn't even attempted to look at those in GA to any great degree, although I see there are a number there, too. I have only traced my Harpers bact to about the 1840's, as follows (a summary): My earliest Harper is an Ishmael Harper, b. abt. 1844 in SC. He formally married (1866), Angeline Greene (b. abt. 1948, SC) in1866, in Tuskegee, Macon Co., AL, after emancipation, when colored marriages became legal. Either or both Ishmael and Angeline may have been mulatto, slaves of some one of many Harpers who populated several counties in the western part of the state or a few on the eastern border. My suspicion is that they may were more likely owned by Harper and Greene descendants that lived or owned property in one of the eastern counties--Coosa, Montgomery, Lee, Russell, Macon, even Clay. I have not been successful in identifying the these families. Census records would lead me to believe that both Ishmael and Angeline were brought to AL by families that removed there from SC. This may not help you very much, but maybe you (and persons on the list) can help me! Good luck, Annette M. Researching: SPEED, HARPER, LENNARD/LENARD/LEONARD, GREENE, KROUSE, LANE, BESTEDA, MCLANE...all found in AL counties. This summary
Rickie, My great-great-grandfather, CASWELL HARPER, had a son, WILLIAM CASTLETON HARPER. I think "Caswell" was a shortened or mispronounced (or both) version of CASTLETON, because in the 1860 Georgia Census he is listed as "Caswellton". He lists his parents from Virginia. He lived most of his adult life in Hamilton County, Tennessee, and had 12 children. His youngest son, JAMES (Jim) Harper, was my grandmother's father. She never met her father and was raised by a foster father. I went to Tennessee after her death and found relatives, one of whom gave me a tintype of Jim Harper. I am very interested in the CASTLETON HARPER JR. of Virginia, but can't find an absolute connection. Any help? I have a new email address: ([email protected]) Linda McDaniel Smith

Gayle, I sincerely appreciate your offer and any help from all the cousins on getting this line sorted out. My search starts with my Grandmother, Manie "Bell" Gable, b-July 8, 1882 in Taladega, Coose Co., AL. She is the daughter of James Columbus Gable and Elizabeth Henderson. Grandma had a sister Rosie, her only sister. I don't know if she had brothers or not. I never heard her speak of any. Her father, James Gable was the son of Henry Gable who married ELIZA HARPER. I have no dates for them but I have other children: Henry, Sefrona, Ruthie Ann, Eliga "Monk", Elish "Coon", Texas LeAnn, Johnathan "Bose", Wesley, and James Columbus. This is all I have to work with. Hoping for a connection. Thanks all. Rosetta _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
Re: working on the Harper line from VA to ALA/MS w/ supplements from FTM With what I know, my line begins in Virginia and the ancestor that I am trying to connect with is Jesse Harm Harper, born either in VA or NC. He was married in Wilkes Co, NC in 1832 to Betsy/Elizabeth Minton. They migrated to North GA by the 1840/50's. He was in Union Co. in 1850, then settled in Gilmer Co. He had a large # of children. He was killed by the Homeguards in Fannin Co., GA. I can supply his line on down, but would also like to make my plea for any help in finding out who his parents were. THANKS....Angela (Pierce) Groenhout
Hello, I am new to the list. The only definite HARPER I have is my grtgrt grandmother Mary Ann HARPER who was born in 1820 in GA, moved to AL sometime probably as a child md. Henry William RICHARDSON (b. 1820 SC) abt 1842 and went to AR with many other HARPERs. She and Henry went to Ouachita Co. before 1843 and were living next door to William HARPER b. 1813 GA, in 1850. In the next county, Union, were living Henry b.1814 GA, Samuel b. 1809 GA , Samuel B. b.1805 GA(this one had all of his children in TN and MS ), and Wyatt b.1820 GA (maybe a twin to Mary Ann). They were all married in AL and had some children there before coming to AR. Two were married to SHACKLEFORD sisters. A couple of the marriages I found in Greene Co. AL. Mary Ann and Henry's children were named: Stephen Wesley ,James Buchanan, Thomas W., Henry Clinton, Winfield Scott, Mary Ann, and Peyton Dooley. They all went to Red River Co., TX in the 1870s. Mary Ann died in 1878. Hope someone can help with this family. Charmaine Riley Holley [email protected]
Anyone who is looking for information about Harpers in Alabama, email me or put the request on this Harper list along with names and counties (if known) and I will look in my databases. I am collecting info on ALL Alabama Harpers, and trying to connect the families. This information is accumulated from 1850 Census, various books, and information from others -- this Harper List, family members, and emails I have received. Also, anyone who wants to add any information, please send it to me and I will add it for the benefit of others--GEDCOMS are welcome. Anyone who wants a full or parital FTM or GEDCOM file of what I have -- I can send it by attachment in any FTM version or GEDCOM, zipped if you want. All I ask is that you send me your Harper info that connects in any way to Virginia, Alabama, or Mississippi. By working together we can figure all these Harpers out. Gayle Harper
Hi, Jean - Yes, I am researching HARPERs, in AL, but only just begun working on this line a few months ago. I am hardly an authority. I have very little information on Harpers in Georgia...have not even begun to look there. However, the information you provided does offer me some possible clues for the AL families, which is the primary focus of my research at this time. Here is what I can tell you... There are numerous Harpers in AL. The earlest AL Census (1810) shows James in Washington Co. and Robert in Madison Co. Increasing numbers of Harpers start to show up around 1830, in Greene, Pickens and, thereafter, Hale Co. and numerous other counties. It is unclear to me how/if these families are related. The earliest land records for AL reveal that John Harper owned land in Hale Co. (1824); William W. Harper owned land in Shelby Co. (1824); Edward Harper owned land in Perry Co. (1823); Jeseph Harper owned land in Montgomery Co. (1825); Levi Harper, Shelby Co. (1825). The AL territory was just opening up at that time and, no doubt, many families were taking land lots offered by the government. These individuals bought the land, but may never have actually lived there. Your folks could have lived in GA, but bought some of this "new" land in AL. My source for this information is the Bureau of Land Management at <www.blm.gov>. You might try that site for GA records. I indend to do that eventually, but am up to my ears sorting out Harpers in AL. In GA, I find ... o L.R.A. Harper received land in Elbert Co. in 1854. o William Harper is found in Marion Co. among "1830 Marion Co. GA Pioneers." ...found at GAGenWeb site. o Several Harpers are shown in a book,"Authentic List of All Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the State of Georgia." All seem to have been awarded between 1831 and 1841. (Source: National Archives). - Harper, George; residence, Jones Co.; land awarded in Cherokee Co.; lottery #1832 (circa 1841) - Harper, John; res., Haberham; land awarded in Cherokee, reverted (?); lot. #1832 " - Harper, Samuel, Sr.; res. Crawford; land in Lee; lot. #1827, 12/8/1836 - Harper, William, Sr.; res., Hancock; land in Early; #1820, reverted - Harper, William M.; res., Habersham; land in Cherokee; #1832, 1/16/1836 As for VA, I find tons of Harpers, at least 67 different heads-of-household residing in 27 different counties, per the VA 1810 Census. A William W. is shown listed in Brunswick Co., along with a Nathaniel Harper. I did not list every individual I found...no time. (Source: Census indes, National Archives.) Check out the different census records that may be on- line...cemetary/marriage records, too. Some additional leads can come from that. There is also a William Harper found in Louden Co., VA, circa 1773...he witnessed the will of Joshua Evans (.this note was received from another Harper researcher.) Here is another interesting fragment: a John Harper is found on a listing for "The Second Virginia Charter, May 23, 1609" (Charter established by King James," to called and incorporated by the name of The Tresorer and Companie of Adverturers and Planters of the Citty of London for the Firste Collonie in Virginia." (sic). You can view this document at http://virginiagenealogy.com. By the way, are you on the Harper mailing list? Sign-up to "subscribe" through the Rootsweb Home Page. Go to "Mailing Lists" > "Families/Surnames" and find the name HARPER. This has been a very useful source. Nailing-down Harpers is a lot like trying to nail-down Smiths, Jones, and Williams...a lot of material to wade through, with uncertain links... but it appears you've made some progress. That's about all I have. I hope this at least gives you some leads. Let me know if something concrete turns up. Hello, Here is a listing from the 1850 AL Census Index for Harpers in Coosa and Macon Counties. There are lots and lots of Harpers in many other AL counties (see previous message posted to the list today or e-mail me), but I was running out of time and did not list them all. I noted the following because they are in the area where I am looking for my Harpers. Hello All - I just came from the Nat. Archives (I live in Washington, DC), where I looked in the early census indexes and other records for HAPRERS in Alabama. Hi! I am interested in Harper's in Scotland. Does someone out there have a connection with James Harper? I have very little info on him. He was married on Dec. 31, 1846 in Abbey (Paisley), Renfrewshire, Scotland to Elisabeth Davidson. They both resided in the Abbey parish in the town of Johnston. James was a tailor and this family moved to Glasgow and by 1865 to Belfast, Ireland. They had three children that I know of : Margaret Hunter Harper b. 7 Oct 1847 SCTL Elisabeth Harper b. 1 Dec 1858 Glasgow, SCTL Mary Montgomerie Harper b. 11 May 1862 Girvan, Ayrshire, SCTL I also have some pictures of other children, but not verified: James Jr., and Jesse. Does anyone out there know anything about this family? Thanks, Denise Bennett Wisconsin, USA
