    1. ALGERNON S. HARPER FROM MD.
    2. Jeanna Harper
    3. I am looking for any informations on the Talbot County, MD. Harpers. Algernon S. Harper (1850 census) was married twice. He had five children with his first wife: Martha, James, Mary, and Thomas. His second wife, Mary R.A. Sherwood, (my great great grandmother) had three sons with Algernon - Charles R., John Frank (my great grandfather), and William W. Harper. After Mary R.A. Sherwood Harper died the family split up. Charles and John went to live with their grandfather, Richard Sherwood. William W. went to live with the Berridge family and Algernon lived with the Reddie family. Later John Frank Harper went to Lancaster County, Va. John married twice. His first wife, Dora Lee, had the following known children with John: Basil, Agnes, Frank, Ethel, and Cora. His second wife, Corella Sampson (from Northumberland Co., Va.) had the following known children with John: Linwood, Doris (Daisy), Lillian, Carlton, and Glenn (my grandfather). John Frank Harper moved his family to Baltimore, MD. sometime around 1910. John Frank Harper died in 1918. Does anyone have information on these Harpers?

    3. Craig, The original message had this at the end. Don't know if the whole thing was written by this Chaplain, if so, he deserves the credit for writing it all. Betty Remember November 11th is "Veterans Day" "It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag." Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC

    2. Craig Beeman
    3. Please forgive, but I believe this worthy of sharing with all our "Cousins!" Proud of our many HARPER families' Veterans, and of our son who is currently serving in our nation's military forces! WHAT IS A VET? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel. She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL. He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning, slouchy hill- billy rednecks and no -account gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs. He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. He also was my father, your father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and yes , all the females who bravely served and are serving their country, for OUR freedom . He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served or is serving our country, just lean over and say "Thank You." That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU". Remember: November 11th is Veterans Day And don't forget to Fly The FLAG on Nov. 11th, with pride: Alice [email protected] "Message From Massachusetts" Thank you Veterans! TTYL Craig

    1. Alexander HARPER & Mary SLATER
    2. Paul S. Boyer
    3. Family Group Sheet Name: Alexander HARPER Birth: abt 1766 Berkeley Co., VA [now WV] Death: 23 Jul 1842 Berkeley Co., VA [now WV] Father: John HARPER (1720-~1793) Mother: Margaret "Margery" ROBINSON (->1794) Misc. Notes "He had a fine education and married when twenty-seven years old. Died at the age of seventy-seven years. He had the finest obituary in the Martinsburg, Va. [now West Virginia], papers ever written for any of the old settlers of Berkley Co." - Harper Family Notes. "Died on Saturday after a lingering illness Mr. Alexander Harper in the 77th year of his age an old inhabitant of this County." Martinsburg Gazette, Thursday morning, 28 Jul 1842. The name of the wife is apparently incorrectly listed in the Harper Family Notes, which has her as "Miss Robinson," probably in confusion with his mother Margery Robinson. There is record of a marriage between an Alexander Harper and a Mary Slater on 30 Oct 1794, performed by John Boyd (Marriage Records of Berkeley Co, VA; Salt Lake Lake City Genealogy Library Film 0831960). DATE of BIRTH: If Alexander HARPER was 27 at the time of his marriage, then his birth date would have been in 1766 after 30 Oct, or during 1767 before 30 Oct. His death date was 23 Jul 1842, according to the notice in the Martinsburg Gazette; that notice says that he was "in the 77th year of his age," which (literally speaking) means that he would have been 76 years old at the time of his death. That would imply a birth date in 1765 after 23 Jul, or in 1766 before 23 Jul. If we accept the statement in "Harper Family Notes" that he was actually 77 years old at the time of his death, then his birth would have been during 1764 after 23 Jul, or during 1765 before 23 Jul. None of these combinations nail down the year of birth, and the possibility still exists that he might have been a twin of his brother Samuel. 1803 Land Book of Berkeley Co., VA, lists him with 100 acres. In 1823 he is listed as owning 69.75 acres, 15 acres, and a lot of 11 acres owned jointly with John Smith. The same listing for 1840. Research "Harper Family Note" Attributed to Martha HARPER Slayton. Marriage Records of Berkeley Co, VA; Salt Lake Lake City Genealogy Library Film 0831960. Notes There was a Mary SLATER b. 3 Mar 1776 at St. John's Parish, Prince George's Co., MD; father Richard SLATER; mother Jane. There are some other Slaters listed in Berkeley Co., VA: Deed Book 3, page 176, 16 Mar 1775, "Thomas Shepherd and Elizabeth, his wife, to Daniel Slater for 10 shillings, a lot of half acre in Mecklenburg. Lot No. 89, Beginning at a corner between High Street and Mill Street then along Mill Street 206 feet to the corner of No. 85 thence with the same 103 feet to the corner of No. 90 thence with the same 206 feet to High Street thence with the same 103 feet to the beginning, containing 1/2 acre." 1. John HARPER & Margery ROBINSON
    2. Paul S. Boyer
    3. John HARPER and Margaret ROBINSON A few comments on the speculations over the family of John HARPER and Margaret ROBINSON: 1. Margery is probably used as a nickname for Margaret. We do not need to invent new people every time we run into a nickname. In previous centuries nicknames often appear in documents because the "official" names were cumbersome, and were seldom used in daily life. Also, some nicknames were so common that no confusion resulted. For example, "Polly" was often used for Mary. 2. Let's stick with the legal principle of "best evidence," which means good documentation in place of speculation. The existence of a step-daughter surnamed Reyburn does not mean necessarily that Mrs. Harper was formerly married to someone with that surname. Step-children can come from many sources! Here is the WILL of John Harper, as recorded 18 Sep 1793; Will Book 2, page 195 (Berkeley Co., VA, now WV): "In the name of God Amen This 28th day of febry in the year of our Lord 1791 I John Harper of Berkeley County in the state of Virginia being sick in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God for his Mercys But Calling to mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die I therefore Recommend my soul into the hands of the All Mightie God that Gave It to me in sure and Certain hopes to receive it again at the General resurection, and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like Manner at the Descression of my executors hereafter Named and as Touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased Allmightie God to bless me with in this life I will and Dispose in the following manner, first I will that all my Just Debts and funeral charges be first paid and Discharged, and I will that Margery my wife shall have One third part of the price of my plantation which I allow to be sold and I give to her three Cows to be all hers as long as she remains my widow with her bed and bed Cloaths to be hers with what is before mentioned, I will that my son John Harper have five pounds paid out of my estate Over and above that which he hath already received which I allow to be his full share of my estate I will that Margery my beloved wife have her mare and Saddle with what is above mentioned, I will that my son William Harper have five pounds paid out of my estate which I allow to be his Share with what he hath received, I will that John Harper the son of my son William have Ten pounds paid to him, when he arrives to full age. I will that my daughter Jean Brown have five pounds paid her out of my estate which I allow to be her share with what She hath already received, I will that my daughter Mary Burcham have five pounds paid out of my estate which I allow to be her share with that which she hath recd I will that my Daughter Sarah Harper have forty pounds paid to her out of my estate which I allow to be her share of my estate, I will that all the remainder of my estate both real and personal be Divided equally between my three Sons James Harper Alexander Harper and Samuel Harper But It is my will that my son James have ten pounds more than his two Brothers all the above Leggases is to be paid in penselvania Currancy, if there should be any of my estate left in her hands after her death I allow it must be Equally Devided amongst all our Children, and I do make and Ordain my well beloved wife and her brother James Robinson to be whole and Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament Ratifying and Confirming this and no Other to be my last will and Testament, In Witness whereof I have hereunto my hand and Seal the day and year first written. Signed Sealed and delivered by the said John Harper as his last will & Testament in the presence of us John Harper (LS) John S----ing James Winning Jnr John Champion" So John HARPER's wife was Margery (or Margaret), who had a brother James ROBINSON. This implies that Margery's maiden-name was ROBINSON (unless James ROBINSON was some sort of in-law, such as the husband of her sister!). Someone has suggested the possibility that James ROBINSON might have been the husband of one of John HARPER's sisters. Such things are possible, but we know that John had two sisters: Sarah (m. Mathias KEEN), and Ann (m. Moses WELLS), with no hint of James ROBINSON being involved. Several sons and daughters are clearly listed for John HARPER. I would think that any reconstruction would include these relatively "hard" facts. The "plain meaning" of the will would give us the following children: John HARPER William HARPER (with a son, also William) Jean HARPER m. BROWN Mary HARPER m. BURCHAM Sarah HARPER James HARPER Alexander HARPER Samuel HARPER --Paul S. Boyer <[email protected]>

    3. In addition to the information mentioned by Gayle, I have a Casselton B. Harper b. 1799 GA, m. Mary ? b. 1801 VA, with the following children: Nancy 1823, Harriet 1825, James 1829, William 1832, Angeline 1834, Mary 1836, Sarah 1842, and Eliza 1844. There is also a Castleton Harper b. 1715 Albemarle Co., VA, m. ???, with the following children: Henry, Richard, and Castleton Jr. b. 1749 that married Mary ? and had two children Sara Moore and Charter. I have no "Caswells" other than those mentioned by Gayle. The above birthdates are a bit early, but may help in finding a connection.
