Hi, In searrching the Internet for Harpers Ferry references cited by Jane Patterson I ran across this home page: <http://pw2.netcom.com/~dwwalter/harper.html> I thosugh it might be of interest to Harper researches. Howard A. (Harper) Topp
On the Savannah River between Elbert Co., GA, and Abbeville Dist., SC, was a Harper's Ferry, just north of Van's Creek which runs into the river. Now the area is covered by the Richard B. Russell Reservoir. Reference: THE OLD HOME PLACE: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL INVESTIGATION OF FIVE FARM SITES ALONG THE SAVANNAH RIVER, GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA, by Marlesa A. Gray, Wapora, Inc., funded by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah Distict, RUSSELL PAPERS, 1983, Archelogical Services, Atlanta, GA, National Park Service. p. 55: "The origins of the Harper site, earliest of the ones investigated, still remain partially unknown...first inhabitants were Lyndsey Harper and wife Jane Harris Harper...as early as 1817...but [possibly] 1808. [his] father was Henry Harper who moved to Edinburg, GA, from Albemarle Co., VA, prior to 1792...started a ferry in Edinburgh..." [MY NOTE: Edinburg is east of Ruckersville, GA. There was another ferry, Bowman's or McGowen's Ferry nearer to Edinburg, north of Harper's Ferry.] On p. 58 is a chart of the Henry Harper [1753-1819] and Martha_____Harper family through son Lyndsey and Jane Harris Harper. {MY NOTE: many researchers say Martha was a Gaines.} Perhaps you can find the booklet in your library. I do not have a copy of it myself; a researcher, now deceased, sent me information from it. Ann Harper Bonner in north Louisiana [email protected]
Does anyone on this list have access to this book? Is it a book, or a "paper" --in other words, will I be likely to find a copy at the library?? "Marsha L. FULLER, recently compiled _The HARPER Family History: 1713 - 1995_" Thanks, Jane Patterson [email protected]

Dear Fellow HARPER Cousins... I was recently given information that one of my 4Ggrandmothers was Sarah HARPER, daughter of Joseph (d.1746) and Sarah HARPER She married Matthias KEEN. Matthias and Sarah had 4 sons, who are all mentioned as nephews in the will of Robert HARPER, of Harper's Ferry. Does anyone have this information? I would love to read any books on the HARPER family of Harper's Ferry. Thank you, Helen Howington Ernst Johnson City, TN [email protected]
Hi Fellow Subscribers I sent this message directly to Helen and am now copying it to the list because of interest expressed by other people - I was at Harper's Ferry one very hot summer day in 1997 and purchased soft covered book "From the Riot & Tumult-- Harpers Ferry" by James V. Murfin. There are several paragraphs about the Harper family in this book. Brief Quote -- [ Robert] 'Harper was a Phiadelphia architect and millwright of some repute. In 1747 he contracted to build a Quaker meeting house near Winchester, Virginia. En route to the Shenandoah Valley, he passed throught what was then being called "The Hole" and determined to make it his home.' This book is copyright Harpers Ferry Historical Association, Inc. P. O Box 197 Harpers Ferry, West Virginia 25425. I am sure if you wrote to them, they would be able to tell you of other books dealing with the Harper family. Bonnie Ostler Ottawa, Canada
Hello to all on this list; am new at this, but have a Harper research problem and hope that someone out there will recognize something: My John Payne Harper, b. VA 1790, marr. on 12 Mar 1813 in Madison Co. AL to Martha Phillips(b. 1798 KY). He d. in Jackson Co. AL in 1863 and she was still liv. with one of her sons in Van Zandt Co. TX in 1870. John Payne Harper's parents were: Robert Harper and Margory(Payne)Harper. What little I have on them says that he d. in 1840 in Tuscalusco(?)MO and that he married Margory Payne on 31 Dec 1787 in Bradford Co. MO?(I am a little suspicious of the MO reference; does not seem to synch with the rest of the family data; and 1787 seems to be an extraordinarily early marr. date for MO. Have info on the children of John Payne Harper: Robert P. Harper(m. Melinda), and a possible son, Andrew Harper(who m. Nancy_____). Robert Payne Harper by his wife, Melinda, had: Andrew Lloyd Harper, John W. Harper, Carolina Harper, William P. Harper, Drucilla Harper, Martha Harper, and Sarah Matilda Harper(my line). Will be glad to share info/opinions with anyone who may have an angle on this family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Larry D. Hamilton Coats P.O.
