    1. Family History Centers New Online Site
    2. Series: Family History Centers Subject: New Online Site The new online site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints contains two types of records: 1. The IGI (International Genealogical Index) 2. The Ancestral File IGI. The IGI is a composite of extracted parish registers in the US and 42 countries. Also, it contains Family Group Sheets submitted by members. Batch Numbers. An important item to watch for is the "Batch Number". If the batch number is preceded by an alpha letter, such as C803406 - that means that the information came from an extracted record, such as birth, christening or marriage record. It does not include death records. You can order this record from the church (film number is listed), however, no additional information will be found. The best thing to do is to go to a local Family History Center, look under "Parish Registers", and locate the parish register in question. You can order that register on microfilm, and take a look at the "mortuary" or "deaths". This additional information is quite helpful, as it helps identify the oldest ancestors residing in that parish. If the batch number is a plain 6 digit number (such as 330906), that means that the information came from a Family Group Sheet submitted by a member, and, you can order that record on microfilm to view for yourself. It may or may not have additional information about other family members. That depends on the time-period involved. For example, during the 1970's, sheets for "individual" were used (as well as regular family group sheets) which did not list the whole family. ANCESTRAL FILE. This a composite of pedigrees submitted to the Ancestral Unit of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by members and non-members alike. Essentially, here is what happens: When the pedigree is received the "computer" determines if there is a family match, and if so, merges any new information with the old information. For this reason, you will sometimes find an example like this - John b. 1800, John b. 1803, listed as separate children. Since the date was not exact, the computer treated both Johns as separate individuals. The Ancestral File is "full of errors". Although a source or reference may have been included by the submitter, the program does not yet allow this into it. (They are working on that). It is not uncommon to find multiple errors and entries in any given pedigree. Best to treat this information as a "worksheet". What I do is print out the pedigree chart and family group sheets, then go to work trying to prove it. The IGI also contains error. Many of those errors are in the marriage portion (event). What happens is people frequently list the marriage license date, instead of the date it was performed. In Georgia, for example, the top portion of the marriage certificate is the license date, and the bottom half is the actual marriage date. These records should be used as guidelines, not fact. Accepting other people's work can really confuse our genealogy, and cause us not to get anywhere on it. We must search census records, county records, - census records, county records, on and on and on, to validate the genealogy. So, when you access the information online, please keep this in mine. LDS site - http://ldsonline.com/family.htm Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Family History Center Online - - Mormans - This is the site where you will be able to view the Ancestral File and IGI (International Genealogical Index) online. ================

    3. I'm enclosing some information & names of my direct line. As I'm new to genealogy, I'm still naïve enough to hope that new names means fresh bait to the other fishermen who enjoy fishing for family. Names are below small synopsis. My father was taken when he was young to be raised by the state of TX. His information on his family line is sketchy (an understatement!) but because I am new to genealogy (or maybe in spite of it) I'm feeling .fairly optimistic that his family line can be traced. All I have is word of mouth from older family members. I'm hoping maybe even her husband &/or other family would be nearby? Here goes! Her name is Anna Lucinda (Weese is her maiden name) Sexton b. 17 Feb 1886 in Grant City MO d. 9 July 1949 in Kansas City, m. to Charles D. Sexton in 10 June 1898 The only child I know of is my Grandmother (her daughter) Name: Mary Magdaline Sexton b. 14 may 1912 in Kansas City, Kansas Died 10-18-91 in Houston TX (I remember Granny saying she had a sister, but I believe she may have said something about other brothers & sisters, she said while their family was traveling on the Kansas Plains in a wagon (they were very poor) they met a traveling preacher on horseback who stayed & ate dinner with them. After two days, her father gave her to the minister to marry (she was 12yrs at the time) & that was the last she saw of her family. When I asked her why her father had given her away, she replied that there was not enough food to feed everyone in the family. She said she cried all the way & was only allowed to carry her doll with her & the clothes on her back. I believe the reason my father was taken from her & my grandfather was due to the neglectful circumstances of the families life. Thanks for you time! Every family finds their stories when they begin this hobby, I'm sure I'll stumble across many more! I think I should post this on a Texas site along with whatever family names I have. Thank you Ken Heimann

    2. Well, I started six months ago with the purchase of this computer, researching my Harper line. I have had astounding success, meeting many distant cousins and am now a confirmed Harpergene.nut. Although we have not gone beyond our CHARLES NELSON HARPER b. 1805 in (KY?) we are searching for him. I guess I should have started at home because just a few miles West of here is Harper Dry Lake and when I dabbled into Seismology, I discovered that our house sits on the Anticline of the Harper Fault. I hope it doesn't move in my lifetime. If anyone knows of a possible link for Charles Nelson Harper in KY or VA please hollar. Best of luck to all the Harpers looking for kin. 2. Mario - You said... << what information do you have on greene county harpers? they were black, weren't they? >> I find Hapers in the AL census indexes for Greene County in 1830, 1840 and 1860... I didn't record Harpers in 1850 in Greene County, but they were probably there... and, I have not seen an index for 1870. I also have some data on Harper marriages in Greene Co., 1823-1860. Of all of the notes that I have, I surmise that what is recorded--especially in the early years--pertains to white families. Data on the black families doesn't start to emerge until after Emancipation. Although, it is fairly likely that a number of black families used the surname Harper, even prior to 1865, I don't think you make a correct assumption that Harper families found in Greene county were black. The data does not seem to support that notion. There were Harper families all over AL, both black an white, related both by blood and location. Sorting out the different family lines/relationships is what most of us doing research on this surname are tryng to figure out... Good luck.... and, please share what you learn about Harpers. Annette

    2. In a message dated 3/15/99 10:27:10 AM Pacific Standard Time, you write: > you have to be an evaluator and have a password, etc. Do you have that, are you registered? Hi Folks, Like many of you, I FINALLY got onto the LDS search site and was able to get the search button to take me somewhere. Of course, like most of you, it asked for a password. I am not an evaluator or anyone special enough to have a password, so couldn't go any farther, either. I guess we wait until it is "refined" and open to the public. If anyone in the group is an evaluator, maybe you could let us know what your opinion is of the site and if we are in for something great when access is available. I know many of us are very anxious to have the Family Search databases as a tool for research from home. Sorry I jumped the gun and got you all excited again. Maybe next time it won't be a false alarm (grin). Happy St. Patrick's Day, Fran

    1. LDS Web Site
    2. Hi Folks, Good news and Bad news - I received the following address for the LDS web site. I tried for 5 hours to access it, but the server was busy. It must allow only a limited number of people to access it at a time and is overwhelmed. When I finally got on, I tried to do a search, typed in a name, and when I clicked on search, I got another "server is busy" message. So...I can't even tell you if it is the "official" LDS database. I probably shouldn't even share this address because with all of you trying it, I'll never get on again (sigh). But I'm such a nice person that I'll take a chance (grin). Please don't write me to say you can't get on. I'm only the messenger, not the site owner. ~~~~~~~~ "The LDS church has opened a web site. It is on a temporary posting until the end of March when it will go off line for refinement. There is a lot of potential here on this site. Here is the web address: http://eval.familysearch.com/default.asp ~~~~~~~~ Good luck, Fran
