    2. In reference to your posting Aug 13, 1999. Do you know where we can find a color copy of the Coat of Arms you speak of. I know it is niot the official Coat of Arms because of the rules and regulations, but I would still like to have a copy. Descendant of J.William HARPER. Thanks in Advance. 1. Matthew Harper & Mary A. Ward, TN>MO>NE
    2. Harper
    3. This is my first posting to this list. There were quite a few Matthew Harpers. Am I on the right track? The death certificate of my husband’s g-grandfather says his parents were Mathew HARPER and Mary A. WARD, both born in TN. I found the family group of our Matthew HARPER (age 48, born TN) and wife Mary (age 46, born TN) on the 1870 census in Pettis Co., Missouri, along with their children: 1. Joseph, born 3/12/1857 in Pettis Co., MO, and died in Richardson Co., NE 2. Sarah, age 9 (don’t know anything about Sarah) 3. Mack, born 10/11/1868 in Dunksburg, Johnson Co., MO, and died in Richardson Co., NE I found a Matthew, age 28, and a Mary, age 26, on the 1850 Smith Co., Tennessee census. I don’t know if this is "our" Mathew and Mary, but the ages are right. The children listed were Frances?, Walkup, and John. I didn't find the Mathew Harper family on the 1860 Missouri census. I also found 2 submissions to the Ancestral File at www.familysearch.org for Mat(t)hew HARPER, where the age looks appropriate and is from Tennessee. One is for Mathew HARPER (AFN: LQCN-TB), born 1822 in TN, the son of Matthew HARPER and Sarah BOON. No spouse is listed. Another submission is for Matthew HARPER (AFN: CQDS-P2), born < 1820 <Smith, TN>, and is listed as the spouse of Mary Ann WARD. No parents are given for this listing. Are these 2 Mat(t)hew HARPERS on the Ancestral File the same? Do I have the right connections, in that Matthew HARPER living in Missouri in 1870 is the same one as Mathew HARPER, son of Matthew HARPER and Sarah BOON of Smith Co., Tennessee? There are other Matthew HARPERS, and I’m hoping I have the right one. If anyone can straighten me out, I’d appreciate it. Also, if anyone has a more complete list of Mathew HARPER and Mary WARD HARPER'S children, please let me know. Thanks for your help. Jean Harper [email protected]

    1. Harper Coat-of-Arms
    2. Harper Coat-of-Arms The earliest recorded Harper coat-of-arms was granted to Sir William Harper, Mayor of London, in 1568 and is described in ancient heraldic records as : Azure, on a fess between three eagles displayed or, a fret between two martlets of the first. Crest: Upon a crescent or charged with a fret between two martlets azure and eagle displayed of the last. The colours of the coat of arms being gold and blue. It is said that the small birds, known as martlets, in a man's coat-of-arms signified that he had raised himself to a position of nobility by his own endeavours, rather than that he had any inheritance, the martlet's lack of feet being a symbol of having no foundation on which to stand. Althourh there is no motto associated with this particular coat of arms, others have included "Te deum Laudamus" - We Praise Thee, O God.

    1. USING THE AVERAGES
    2. USING THE AVERAGES If you are at a dead-end trying to trace early pre-1850 ancestors, here are a few clues that may lead to finding that elusive documentation. Generally, there are three generations per century. The average age for men to marry was about 24 - seldom before age 20. The average age for women to marry was 20 - seldom before age 16. First marriages were usually between couples near the same age. Women usually outlived their husbands, but older widowers frequently married much younger women who had never been married. Births usually occurred at two year intervals. Frequently the first child was born a year after the marriage. Child bearing generally ended about age 45. Men usually married women from their neighborhood, but if a "non-local" woman shows up, check the man's former home. Often men returned to their former residence to find a wife. Families and neighbors usually migrated from their old homes together, and women rarely traveled alone. If you can't find an older parent, chances are he/she "went West" with a son or daughter and son-in-law. If you find an ancestor with a "virtue" name (Patience, Hope, Charity, etc.) consider a New England heritage. Children were often named for grandparents, both male and female. A Banister Harper appeared in Elbert Co. GA where many of the descendants and siblings of Henry Harper of Albemarle went. Henry's father was Castleton. Does anyone know if the middle initial of Castleton B. of Elbert Co. GA was Banister? These records are of interest to me because I am trying to determine the parentage of David Nimmo of Albemarle County, Virginia. David had a son Hiram who married Mary Taliaferro Harper the daughter of Henry Harper and Martha Gaines [daughter of Hiram Gaines and Margaret Taliaferro] who migrated to Elbert County, GA first and then across the river to Abbeville district S. C. Henry was the son of Castleton Harper of Albemarle County, Virginia. When Castleton was appointed sheriff of the newly formed Albemarle County, a William Harper was his surety. No other mention is made of a William Harper in Albemarle County. There was a William Harper who patented land in Norfolk County 28 August 1746 that was surveyed by James Nimmo. Of recent interest is the discovery of the name Banister Harper in the records of Princess Anne County, Virginia. The name Banister was found in Elbert County, Georgia where Henry Harper migrated. Robert Harper is identified as the progenitor of this clan in Princess Anne County. I have not as yet viewed any of the original records and Ms. Walter abstracted only records that were of interest to her. The law suits should be viewed in their original form as the division of slaves could be helpful in connecting the Banister Harpers together. Leaving his widow who is since dead, and James Harper his only son & heir at law who is now of full age. The said John Harper decd left six slaves. To wit, Phillis, Sabinah, Silla, Betty, Jeany and Sue. Phillis hath since borne one child named Abby. Sabinah hath borne on child named Lam. Jeany hath borne five children, Kate, Sue, Bitha, Bob and Will. Sue hath borne two children named Jeany & Peter. The total is now fifteen slaves. On the death of the said John Harper the whole of the aforesaid six slaves descended to James Harper as heir at law, but the complainants say that he is accountable to his sisters for a proportionable part of the appraised value of the said six slaves, or must equally divide the said six slaves with their increase being equally divided, as in equity he thinks they ought to be, notwithstanding the law gives the whole of the increase, since the decease of his said father John to this respondent, as he had been informed, yet he apprehends that it is but justice that they the said slaves and their now increase should be equally divided amongst the complaints his sisters and the defendant, as he thinks he is much abler to work for a living than they are. p. 89 Feb. 1777. The petition of William Thorowgood Senr sheweth that part of the tract & plantation of land lately purchased by Mr. James Harper late of this county deceased of the estate of Edward Denby decd and now belonging to your petitioner in right of Jacamin his wife as sister and co heiress of said James Harper, is cut off from the main body of said land by the public road which runs through Little Creek Precinct to the Church whereby the part so severed is become useless, etc. He petitions to turn the road along the land now possessed by Henry Haynes up to the line between this land and the land of William Haynes, thence along said line into the main road. Someone said that they had a Joshua Joseph Harp that had Thomas Marion for a son, but I haven't been able to verify that information. This would probably be in Maryland or Virginia around 1700. 3. Looking for parents, etc., of Mary Ann Harper, b. abt. 1843, who m. James P. Askew. Record of marriage from USGenWeb archives for Hempstead Co., AR.: ASKEW, James P., 43, to Mary Ann Harper, 23; 31 Jan. 1867 by Alexander Avery, MG These are most likely gg-grandparents of mine. Mary Edna Askew is great-grandmother. Her 1954 obit list her parents as ? Askew and ? Harper. Mary Edna was b. in Hempstead Co., AR. There are other possibilities, of course, but this is the only couple I've found so far who (so far) fit. Fed. land records place a Ruffin Harper in Hempstead Co. in 1875, and the IGI shows Ruffin Harper m. Emma Hinton Nov. 8, 1873, in Lauderdale, TN. Possible brother or cousin of Mary Ann, I suppose. Anyone know anything about the Harpers of Hempstead Co., AR? Thanks, Russell Laird

    1. Subj: Federal Land Records
    2. Subj: Federal Land Records EXPERT GENEALOGY Editor: Jeannette Holland Austin Series: Land Records Subject: Federal Land Records Date: July 26, 1999 For those of us who are tracing our ancestors across the map into the Old Northwest Territory, we have to resort to various US documents, such as the Federal Land Records. Ideally, had they remained, we could use the traditional records...ie., deeds, tax digests, etc. in the county where they resided. However, we have to be the real detective here, searching various Federal land claims and documents. Those who left from Kentucky and Virginia, crossed into Ohio Territory, Illinois and Indiana and families from Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama and the Mississippi Territory are part of the migration which started about 1788. By 1835, a steady stream of settlers had already crossed the plains. The Federal Land Series, a set of 4 volumes, listed below, includes helpful information in the westward movement. Here are two sources for on-line Federal Land Records: California Federal Land Records, by county, Database http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ca/ca-land.htm Randolph Co., Arkansas Federal Land Records: This extract is from a file compiled from the Bureau of Land Management Land Records and includes homestead and cash entry patents before 1908 for what is now Randolph Co., Arkansas. http://www.digiserve.co.uk/kirk/rcflandr.htm
