At the request of several people I am posting the follow up article in The Tulsa Tribune March 12, 1930. $70 Donated Toward Burial of Mother of Civil War Veteran A fitting burial for Mrs. Hannah Harper, Tulsa mother and wife of heroes of wars of our country, who died Sunday night at the age of 102, has been assured by generous-hearted Tulsans, but still more must be added to prevent her being buried in potters' field. Monday morning Mrs. A. B. Ellis superintendent of the Tulsa East Side Sanitarturm, told The Tribune of the pathetic circumstances surrounding the death of the woman. Her children had exhausted every resource caring for her and were unable to provide funds for burial, Mrs. Ellis said. The Tribune published the story together with an appeal for assistance and Mrs. Ellis worked to secure aid and almost enough money has been secured. A plot in Memorial Park has been donated by the American War Mothers' Association, Mrs. T. S. Truelove, president, announced and she will be buried in the section set aside for mothers of war heroes. Tuesday morning $70 had been subscribed. Those who have contributed include: Ladies of Grand Army of Republic by Mrs. Harvey.....$5.00 Daughters of American Revolution..............................$10.00 Tulsa Chapter U. D. C...............................................$12.50 Clement Evans Chapter U. D. C................................$12.50 American Legion.......................................................$10.00 F. H. Glassmeyer, president of Sons of American Revolution....$10.00 Loyal Western Club of Memorial Church..................$5.00 G.A.R. Ladies by Mrs. McGee American War Mothers, lot in Memorial Park Cemetery A I A H Club...........................................................$5.00 Those who wish to aid may call Mrs. Ellis at the Tulsa East Side sanitarium of The Tribune. Well, there must be another part to this so I will go back to the library tomorrow and see if can find another article in paper on March 13, 1930. Stay Tuned. Gayle Carson Tulsa, OK

Hi Folks, I received this on another family list and thought you would like to know about it, especially if you don't already have a web page: ~~~~~~~~ You can upload your family file to RootsWeb for free! And, boy, is it great! I just uploaded and it only took a few minutes. You have the option to include "more about" notes or not, you can include your sources or not, you can "clean" the info on your living folks---many options available. First, you need to set up an account, so you can upload your file, and later, to edit it (which I just did, also). Then, send it up! So easy and so fast. It took HOURS to send it to the Family Tree Maker site. Just minutes at RootsWeb, and it's much more complete. Also, you can add "post-ems" to anyone's data, and you can be notified when someone adds a post-em to yours, so that you can connect. This is brand new, just got started yesterday, I think. There may be a few bugs yet, but there's a message board where the fellow taking care of the GEDs is posting responses to the suggestions. And he is fast. Here's the URL: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ ~~~~~~~~~ Even if you don't upload your info, it is a nice search site. As more gedcoms are submitted, there will be more data to search. While reviewing a newspaper for an obit today for the following: Tulsa Tribune- Wednesday March 11, 1930 Tulsans May Provide Funeral for Mother of Civil War Vet A Tulsa mother, 102 years old, who lived a life of service to her family and country, whose husband was a veteran of the war of 1812, the Seminole Indian war and the Mexican war and whose son was a veteran of the Civil war, will be buried in the potter's field if generous-hearted Tulsans fail to assist the family which has exhausted all its meager resources to care for her. The mother is Mrs. Hannah HARPER, 102, who died Sunday night at 7:10 at the Tulsa East Side Sanitarium, of pneumonia. The body is at the Gordon Barnes funeral home, pending funeral arrangements. A son, O. L. HARPER of 1208 E. Jasper St. said the would be grateful for assistance, though he did not ask for it. Mrs. HARPER was born in Raleigh county, North Carolina, Dec. 28, 1828. After the death of her first husband she married Douglas HARPER. He served in the war of 1812, the Indian wars, and the Mexican war but was too old for service in the Civil war. He died in 1900 at the age of 108 after he died she attempted to make a living for her second family, and came to Tulsa about 1912 and has been living with her children since. She is survived by two sons here O. L. HARPER of the Jasper street address and L. S. HARPER, living on Lansing Avenue. Six other children also survive. Tulsans who wish to help to provide a worthy funeral for this aged woman are asked to get in touch with Mrs. A. B. Ellis, superintendent of the Tulsa East Side Sanitarium, of the Gordon Barnes funeral home. Hope this is of value to someone. If so I have a copy of a followup article about the donations made for her funeral. Gayle Carson Tulsa, OK

Subj: Kentucky Research EXPERT GENEALOGY Editor: Jeannette Holland Austin Series: Research Subject: Kentucky Date: September 29, 1999 Any good genealogical research includes doing a thorough job in county court house records. This includes deeds, wills, administrations, marriages, tax digests, etc. Unfortunately, not all human transactions were recorded. Take, for example, deeds. A person could purchase some land, but did not have to record it in the Superior Court Records. That is why the tax digests take up the slack ... help determine what years our ancestor lived in the area, as well as names of adjoining neighbors and waterways. Too, local ministers did not always record marriage ceremonies with the clerk of the court. One tip in researching marriages. The license to get married and the actual marriage ceremony frequently appear on one format, with the date of the license being at the top, and the date of the actual ceremony at the bottom. For those of you who do research in family history centers, you will notice on the IGI (International Genealogical Index) that there are frequently two marriage dates in the same county for the same person. One of them is the date of the license - one of them is the actual date the ceremony occurred. And the answer here is "human error". Thus, the need to not always take someone's word for a record, but rather personally check the sources. The two marriage books listed below are excellent tools for locating ancestors in Kentucky, the first book beginning in 1797, and are temporarily being sold at very low prices. Wills are documents which bequeath property, both real and personal, to family members and friends. Simply because a Last Will and Testament is located, does not mean that it qualified for probate. One can discern that it did or did not by noticing whether an Executor or Administrator transacted the estate business. If it was an administrator, then the will was not probated. It is good news for the researcher when a person died intestate because (1) an administrator was appointed (2) inventory taken (3) sale conducted of the estate (4) receipts and vouchers provided by heirs and (5) Annual Returns made until the estate was fully administered (bills and heirs paid). A close examination of the final returns usually provide names of heirs. They may not be designated as heirs, therefore, one must notice the "amounts" which were disbursed because shares and disbursements to children are quite similar in dollar amount, although not exact. If there are minor children, then a search should be made of guardian bonds and returns. ==================
I am trying to find information about the parents of my g grandfather John P Harper. I think that the P stands for Patterson since my uncle has that name and was named after his grandfather. John was born in Ohio Aug 1831(I think it was the 4th) He married Hannah M Price 6 Oct 1868 in Wyandot Co., Ohio. According to the census his parents came from Penn. Based upon the names in the family I think that the Patterson is the madien name of his mother or grandmother. Has any one any information that may link to this Harper line? Thanks Joez [email protected]

Patricia -- Do you have any other details on Walter D. Harper? I have a Walter Harper born about 1882 in York, Nebraska. His family moved to Lincoln, IL around 1895. As of 1903 he was still in Lincoln, and not married yet. His parents were Richard Harper (son of William Harper and Rebecca Rider) and Alice Harper (daughter of Baldwin Harper and Permelia Cartmell). Richard and Alice Harper were first cousins; William and Baldwin Harper were brothers. I don't know what became of Walter Harper after 1903. Does this fit?
