The Memorial of David Harky most humbly showeth, That your Memorialist lately lived in New Montgomery in N. C. and in the year 1780 joined the British Army under the Command of Lord Cornwallis and raised a company in the Commissary's Dept. and received a commission and did actual service until taken prisoner at York Town in Va. and have received no pay for his said service, and also left a valuable estate which is charged on the back of the petition. Do humbly beg that your honors will please to give your memorialist a hearing concerning the premises, and he as in duty bound will ever pray. II 8 ,, His mark is a crop in the left ear and his brand DH on the left shoulder. " 726 CASE OF DAVID HARKEY, Late of NORTH CAROLINA Claimt. says. He came in the 2nd. Fleet. Went up the River before the winter. Came down once. Never heard a word till he heard of Capt. Vand. sent by him. He lived in New Montgomery, North Carolina. Joined the British Army under Lord Cornwallis in South Carolina in '80. Raised a company of men as Militia in the back Country. His men were defeated. He made his escape himself and joined the British in Cambleton. Staid with Ld. Cornwallis till taken Prisoner at York Town. Had 25 men under him. Was in the Commissiary Department. Was 19 months Prisoner before he got to New York. Now settled on Grand Bay. Produced a letter from Charles Stedman to show he was concerned in the Commissary Department. Had 300 acres in New Montgomery. Bought of George Crowell in 1777 for 60 pounds and a horse. His wife and children were driven off and land sold. Lost 7 horses, 3 Cows, and 7 Cattle, Mon. and Clothes, Wagon, Furniture. AU left behind when he went to join the British. Corn in the ground. HENRY UNDERWOOD, WITS: Remembers Claimt. in Lord Cornwallis's Army. He had a company of men under him in the Commissiary Department. He had a Commission signed by Booth, by Lord Cornwallis order. He continued with Ld. C. till taken. Heard he had been raising Malitia before he came to Lord Cornwallis. Heard he had lived very well and had a pretty Plantation. He was raising men and was to have a Company. St. John, 17th. Feb., 1787 This is to certify that I knew David Harkey in North Carolina and that I believe him to be a Loyal Subject and have heard that he lost much in Consequence thereof.
