Hi Tess and all-- I think the Rev. David Harkey you found in 1848 GA is not Daniel David Harkey. I sure hope someone can identify him! Unless evidence leads me to believe otherwise, I think every David Harkey is a David, not a Daniel David. On the other hand, I haven't seen any of the several Pike Co. records you mention. Can you copy them to the list, and tell us whether they were typescripts or copies of the original records (that is, in handwriting)? Maybe I should explain the reasons why I think it's unlikely that Daniel David would ever call himself David (and, again, I'm speaking without having seen original documents--or copies of them--in which the person known to be Daniel David gave his name as David). (1) Daniel is called Daniel on his marriage record to Mary Bankston. (2) He is Daniel in the 1830 Wilkes Co. GA census. (3) The name in the 1840 Pike Co GA census could be Daniel or David. (4) He is Daniel in the 1850 Pontotoc Co MS census. (5) Samuel Jones, in his will, calls him Daniel. (6) There were already so many David Harkeys around that it seems unlikely Daniel David would use his middle name. (7) Daniel David had a brother named David, and so it seems unlikely that he would use the name, too. I went to the National Archives a couple of weeks ago, determined to read the censuses until I found something. And I did. 1830 GA Wilkes Co. [M19, roll 21, p 301, 169th Dist. HARKEY, DANIEL (p 301) NOT IN INDEX. 1 male 30-40, 1 female 20-30; 2 males under 5 1840 GA Pike Co. (roll 48) HARKEY, DAVID or DANIEL (p 132) in Index, David OR Daniel in census. Males: 1 40-50, 2 10-15, 2 5-10, 3 u5; Females: 1 30-40 [NOTE: He is named DAVID in index, but handwritten census looks like it could be "Daniel." Ages fit Daniel David Harkey and Mary Ann Bankston family.] 1850 MS Pontotoc Co.: HARKEY, DANIEL 53, wife Mary 48, and all the right children. I also found the following: 1820 SC Lancaster Co.: Daniel Harkey 16-26, wife 16-26, dau u10 1840 AL Shelby Co: David Harky (looked only at Index) 1850 AL Dale Co.: Daniel Harkley 40, wife Rachel 1850 MS Itawamba Co.: David Harkie 57, wife Editha Who is this Daniel HARKEY out of South Carolina???
