    1. Re: Rev. David Harkey
    2. O.K. Went through some old files from my trip to Pike Co. I read an "abstracted" version of the 1840 census that lists him as "David Harkey". I did not see an original census at the courthouse. I got out the magnifying glass to read the deed copies I made while there. The deed March 25 (entered in book on the 26th), 1833 from Allen McDaniel looks like it could be either way: Can't tell if it is Daniel or David. The writing has a break after the n or v and it makes it tough to tell which it is. Another deed dated 2 Jan 1841 (to William Elliott) again, could be interpreted either way. Same handwriting and another break after the n or v, although of the two, this one looks more like Daniel. One of the witnesses of this one was John McEachern, the father of my ancestor, Sarah Elizabeth McEachern who married Samuel Jones Harkey. Also in my file from the trip to Pike Co.: Weldon Bankston, the son of Hiram and Susannah Slayden Bankston and brother to our Mary Ann Bankston had a son, born 1834 named William S. I found a W.S. Bankston listed in the 1850 census abstract at the courthouse, age 47 with a wife Martha J. (found yesterday where she died a few years after this census in an old Southern Christian Advocate Journal listing) along with the following: Susan A. 20 James A. 18, laborer Samuel J. 16, laborer (probably another named for Samuel Jones in Wilkes) Martha J., 10, student HARKEY, William 20, student (I believe this was Daniel & Mary's son who stayed behind when they went to MS to finish up his schooling to join them later.) Thus, I'm think we can be fairly safe to assume that this W.S. was indeed, the son of Weldon Bankston, brother of our Mary Ann. This family from W. S. remained in Pike Co. and have family there today. They owned a lumber mill and several other businesses around town. I did not stay long enough to meet any of them. My husband was anxious to get on home and tired of hanging out in the local coffee shop where everyone was staring at the "new" guy in town, ha! I will get back there whenever Bill's travels take him up that way in the future to look around a bit more. I'll be researching in Charleston, SC next week and will be out of touch for awhile. Look forward to more Harkey list posts! Teresa
