Alma, I see no one has answered this. Before Israel Mathias Harkey went to Texas some of his sons and Levi's sons were Indian Scouts - that would be Riley Harkey for one. They liked the land around San Saba and they returned to Arkansas to tell Israel Mathias Harkey and the others about it. They decided to move and made up a wagon train and moved possibly around the middle of 1850. I would really love to know who all went as I think there were not only Harkeys but possibly McCarley's and Lipes. We find that many of our lines of Harkeys have been Lawmen. Thus several served as Texas Rangers. One of another of our lines went to California and was a Sheriff there for many years during the Gold Rush years. Maybe some members of the list with stories about their Lawmen Harkeys could tell the rest of us about them.
