    1. [HARKEY-L] Children of James HARKEY
    2. Dear Judith, Thanks so much for listing not only the children of James HARKEY, but also all the other important information. I've been interested in the movement pattern of the HARKEYs in and out of North Carolina. I suppose James HARKEY simply stayed in one spot in Montgomery Co. NC, and the county changed under his feet to become Stanly Co. in 1841. So many HARKEYs were on the move in the late 1840s. My line (Daniel David HARKEY, b 1797, son of John HARKEY, who was eldest son of Martin "the Elder") left NC about 1821-22 and lived in Georgia, but he, too, started west in 1848-49. He was in Pontotoc Co. MS for the 1850 census. The story is that he intended to join the California gold rush but got no farther than the boot-heel of Missouri and decided that the country was too lush and productive to pass up. I do wish I knew whether the various HARKEY families kept in touch with each other--for example, did Daniel David in Pontotoc MS know that James was in Pope Co AR and Jacob's children were in Yell Co AR? In your listing of James HARKEY's children, I notice that two of his sons died on the same day-- John E. HARKEY, age abt 22, and James HARKEY, age abt 13, both died on 9 March 1862. Do you happen to know the story, whether it was by accident, illness, or a tragedy of the Civil War? Alma Roark Johnson [email protected]
