    1. [HARKEY-L] "Surviving on the Texas Frontier" by Sarah Harkey
    2. Nina Harkey
    3. Always looking for neat Xmas gifts I wanted to get this book, "Surviving on the Texas Frontier" for my sister-in-law, Sarah Harkey Douglas. Picked up a copy at www.half.com for far less than Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Just in case anyone was interested.... Another one I picked up, at Barnes and Noble this time, was "Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas" by Josiah H. Shinn. There is 1 copy for auction at www.ebay.com . Book Description A major work on early pioneers and prominent citizens and families of Arkansas, Shinn's Pioneers covers the history of the settlement of the state from its formation down to the latter half of the nineteenth century. In addition to numerous biographical sketches containing considerable genealogical data, Shinn's history contains extensive genealogies of the following families: Brilhart, Coffman/Cuffman, Davis, Desha, Fletcher, Garland, Hall, Johnson, Kaufman, Lafferty, Lindsey, Martin, Newton, Rector/Rechtor/Richter, Watkins, and Wilson. Still other genealogical features include lists of Revolutionary pensioners alive in 1833 and 1834, with their ages, arranged by county; some marriages of 1822 and 1823; a general list of Arkansas marriages, 1820-1830; and Arkansas deaths, 1820-1839. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

    1. Re: [HARKEY-L] Re: HARKEY'S IN MISSOURI
    2. Lynn, No, this family isn't in the HARKEY-WALCHER line or the Martin "der Junge" HARKEY line (the other Montgomery IL settlers), and they are not D. V. HARKEY's children. As I wrote (and who can blame you for missing it), Jerry E. Harkey identified this John Weilie HARKEY as a descendant of Henry, the second child of Martin "the Elder" HARKEY. Briefly, the descendancy is this: 1 Johannes HERCHE 1-1 Martin "the Elder" HARKEY, d 1807 Cabarrus Co NC 1-1-2 (second child of Martin) Henry HARKEY, d abt 1826 Rowan Co. NC; m Mary MELCHER, d aft 1826 Rowan Co NC 1-1-2-1 (first child of Henry) John HARKEY, d 21 Feb 1846 Rowan Co NC; m (3 Jun 1813 Cabarrus Co NC) Christina BEEVER, b abt 1793 Cabarrus Co NC. Some of their children: 1-1-2-1-1 Jesse HARKEY, b abt 1822 Cabarrus 1-1-2-1-2 John W. HARKEY, b abt 1825 Cabarrus (Lucy Caroline's father) 1-1-2-1-3 Susana HARKEY, b abt 1827 Cabarrus While I was collecting the HARKEY households from the 1870 MO census, I copied your ancestor's, too. D. V. was in Gentry Co. MO, with most of the children you named and a couple you didn't. It sounds as if you don't have that info, so here it is: 1870 MO Gentry Co. Howard twp Albany Hls[Hts?] (p 597), hh 192-196 HARKEY, David?[Daniel?] V. 49 NC laborer $150/$35 --Elizabeth 45 NC --Jacob D. 17 IL farm hand --Laura E. 15 IL --Drucilla C. 13 IL --Hulda H. 11 IL --William U.[V.?] 8 IL --Augustus V.? 8 IL --Charles F. 5 IL hh 192-197 HARKEY, JOHN S. 19 IL laborer --Susannah 21 IL (m May 1870) Funny you should mention <<that John Harkey's daughter Nancy Maria married a Henry Walter/Walters.>> When I first read the query, I made that connection, too, and scrambled around organizing what information I could find. Gradually, the truth sank in that I was heading down the wrong path--that if Lucy Caroline descended from that marriage, her maiden name would be WALTER, not HARKEY. If no one else has that family down pat, perhaps I should look at what I collected and make some sense of it! Lastly, is your ancestor's name David Valentine or Daniel Valentine? I wrote "Daniel" when I was copying the census (but I had a fever and was making errors) and that's what DeLean Holtsclaw called him. Is he David? Alma

    1. [HARKEY-L] Correction RE: Lee E HARKEY parents
    2. Hello again-- My guess last night about Lee HARKEY's parents is wrong, and thanks to Sid Brown's note this morning I can correct it quickly. I said "it looks as though they were John and Salina HARKEY." Sid says: >> No, I think it was Lewis Ellison Harkey, son of Martin Luther and Catherine Conder Harkey who moved from GA to TX and where he died in Upshur Co., 5 May 1865. Remember the message stated that "after the Civil War, Lee built a cotton gin." That makes him born before 1845. I think Lee is a nickname for Lewis and check the Martin/Catherine page and you will see he was born in 1828. Your Lee on the census was born about 1870. >> Thanks, Sid! Alma

    1. Re: [HARKEY-L] Re: HARKEY'S IN MISSOURI
    2. Hello Harkeys-- Last Saturday, Yolanda Derstine's query to the message board was forwarded to the list: > My great grandmother, Lucy Carolina Harkey Walters > had a brother Jack Harkey in Cuba, MO at the time of > her death 8/11/1932. Their parents were > John Harkey and MM Kiddenhower. Census records > (Burnet Co., TX 1900) show me that my John was born > in Germany. Lucy was born in Springfield IL in 1865. > Her mother was from NC. Other siblings were > Mrs. Ed Edwards of Cresco, CA, JA Harkey of Hatton, AR, > J.F. Harkey of Austin TX. IF this sounds familiar to > anybody please contact me! I thought for sure someone from the John HARKEY/Sarah WALCHER or the Martin HARKEY Jr. line (the Montgomery Co. IL settlers) would jump in with information, and maybe they did, privately. The query piqued my interest because I was sure the mother's name should be RIDENHOUR/RIDENHOWER, not Kiddenhower and I doubted that Lucy's father was born in Germany. Thus began a couple of days of searching. The clues in the query enabled me to find Lucy Caroline (HARKEY) WALTERS and two of her siblings in the 1900 censuses: 1900 TX Burnet Co. 5 just pct (p 269), hh 52-54 WALTERS, William head w m Mar 1861 39 m15 MS ENG AL --LUCY C. wife w f Dec 1865 34 m15 7ch/6liv IL GERM NC --Acy F. son w m Jan 1886 14 s TX MS IL --Eddie M. dau w f May 1888 12 s TX MS IL --Jessie A. son w m Aug 1891 8 s TX MS IL --Mary C. dau w f Jul 1894 5 s TX MS IL --William H. son w m Nov 1896 3 s TX MS IL --Lizzie E. dau w f Jan 1900 4mo s TX MS IL 1900 TX Travis Co. 1 Just. The older children say that they and their parents were born in Illinois. I started poring over my old files on the HARKEY-WALCHER and Martin HARKEY JR. families, from the apprecnticeship to Mr. Lipe, through the religious education of (Simeon?), through the move from Iredell Co. NC to Montgomery Co IL, through the cemetery inscriptions, through the censuses. Not finding what I needed, I went to the HARKEY GenForum and started reading queries. Jerry E. Harkey's posting provided the key: "John.Weilie HARKEY is my GGGrandfather. He is the son of John and Christina Beaver HARKEY. John W. was born Nov. 20, 1824 in Cabarrus Co NC. Died abt 1875 in Phelps County MO. John W. married Margaret CORL in 1844. Margaret died about 1849. John W. remarried Mary Caroline RIDENHOUR in 1851. John W. is listed in the 1860 Iredell Co. NC census along with his wife, daughter and 2 sons, of which William P. is my GGrandfather." Here are the 1850 and 1860 entries for John Weilie HARKEY and (1860) Mary Caroline (RIDENHOUR): 1850 NC Cabarrus Co. HARKEY died in Missouri in 1875, I figured I could find him either in Missouri or in Illinois in 1875. It turned out to be Missouri (census taken 25 Aug 1870): 1870 MO Phelps Co. When John died in 1875, he left a 40-year-old widow and five children, four of them very young. They have to be somewhere in an 1880 census, but I can't find them. If they are in the 1880 MO Soundex, I missed them. Data in the 1900 census show that Lucy, James, and John were all in Texas by about 1885, but I don't find them in Texas in 1880--or in California, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, or Oklahoma. And the last question is: Why did all the HARKEYs suddenly leave Montgomery Co. IL? In 1850 and 1860, Montgomery Co. was full of HARKEYs. In 1870 there were none. No, that was the second-to-last question. The last question is: What is the connection between John W. HARKEY (m Mary Caroline RIDENHOUR) and Montgomery Co. IL? Did they live there between the 1860 and 1870 censuses? John and/or Mary says in the censuses that their children were born in NC, and so they probably were. But why do the children say they were born in IL? I think they must have lived in Hillsboro, Montgomery Co. IL after they left North Carolina, and perhaps they left IL for Missouri at the same time as David Valentine HARKEY did. Does anyone have the answer? Another interminable posting from Alma Roark Johnson

    1. Re: [HARKEY-L] Lee E Harkey
    2. Nina and all-- You asked who were the parents of Lee E. HARKEY, who is mentioned in an article about Hodgson, Texas. It looks from the census as though they were John and Salina HARKY: 1880 TX Cass Co. 3 Just. Pct ED 12 HARKY, JOHN 53 NC --Salina wife 40 IN --Wm. son 20 TX --Lee p? 10 TX HARKY, Cleon p? 12 NC --Franklin son 10 TX --Joseph son 8 TX --Martin son 6 TX --Nora dau 3 TX --Harry son 1 TX (I have no idea who Cleon HARKY is, or what the "p" stands for. I copied this census entry only this morning, so it's fresh in my mind. It might not be a "p" but it isn't an "s.") Lee HARKEY as an adult is in the 1900 census: 1900 TX Bowie Co. 3 Pct. The best guess I can make from looking at the 1850 census is that they are Ambrose and Susana P. HARKEY of Union Co. NC. And the next question is: Who are the parents of Ambrose HARKEY? With that, I'll say goodnight. Alma

Hodgson, five miles southwest of DeKalb in western Bowie County, was named for John J. Hodgson, its first postmaster. Settlement of the farming and lumbering area started around 1836, and a community began to emerge shortly after the Civil War when Lee E. Harkey built a cotton gin and a sawmill at the site. A post office was opened there in 1893, and by 1896 the town's population was estimated at 180. Later the community declined. Its post office was closed in 1904, and by 1910 its population had fallen to twenty-five. The last available population estimates, made in the 1940s, set the population at thirty-five. In 1984 the community had a church and one business.

You wrote that you are looking for HARKEYs who are related to the line beginning with John HARKEY, who died 1832 in Tuscaloosa Co. AL and ending with William Washington HARKEY, b 1881. I'm not sure they are still on the list, but if they don't respond to your post, you might be able to reach them directly: Nell Naugher (NNaugher@aol.com), Paula Norwood (PaulaXN@aol.com), Craig Crouch (cecrouch@cwo.com), Geneva Purdy [I think] (genpurdy@aol.com), and Eddie Harkey (harkey@pepperlink.net). If you are not successful in reaching any of them at those rather old email addresses, you might try posting specific questions to the HARKEY list (HARKEY-L@rootsweb.com). You seem already to have the descendancy chart of that line, so it's not clear to me what you mean by "any information." We'd also like to learn about your HARKEY connection. Have you made any progress in researching the parents of John HARKEY? That's still an unsolved mystery on the list. Alma Roark Johnson
