Dear List, I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with. My records show that Israel Mathias Harkey and Catherine Furr were married on 3-06-1821 in Cabarrus County, NC. Has anyone been able to obtain a copy of this marriage record? I am descended from Israel Mathias Harkey and Catherine Furr Harkey through their daughter Mary Ann (Polly) . She married George Pitzer Armentrout. The other question is. Has anyone found Israel Mathias and Catherine Harkey on a census record for 1870? George and Polly Harkey Armentrout were in Benton County, Arkansas in 1870 and had one child born there in 1871. I haven't been able to locate Israel Mathias and Catherine in San Saba, Texas or anywhere else using the census indexes. Any help on either of these two questions would be helpful. Thanks, Toni
Hello List, In the post I just sent with the information from files of O. B. Harkey on Israel Harkey and his wife, Catherine Furr, it appears someone gave a wrong year for her birth date. She could not have been born in 1891. The 1880 census shows age as 79, and that would make her born about 1801. Flora
Hello List, Some time back I sent a question to the list about the death date of Israel Mathias Harkey of San Saba. I found his widow, Catherine Furr Harkey, on the 1880 census living alone and listed as a widow. I found the following information today in some of the old papers I received from O. B. Harkey in 1975: "Israel Mathias Harkey born at Ashville near the present site of Charlotte North Carolina on June 9, 1797 and died March 3, 1876 at his home in what is Harkeyville in San Saba County, TX and is buried at the current site of Rogan Field (where the high school plays football). Mathias Harkey owned and operated a general merchandising store at Pleasant Valley, Arkansas after moving there in 1848 from Stanley County, NC. He married on March 6, 1821 to Catherine Furr. She was born on October 9, 1891 in Cabarrus Co., NC and died on July 20, 1895 at her daughter's, Catherine McDaniel, home in TX.". I do not know who erected his tombstone, but it appears the dates on it are wrong. Flora
Good Morning!! Does anyone have the line of Margaret Smith b 1832 Va? She married Daniel Riley Harkey. She d in San Saba Co Tx. Thanks for any help you can give on this matter. Glitz
Hello Group, Last night I asked if anyone out there had a marriage record for one of the Harkey girls to Abraham Dry. Like the trooper she is, Alma, came through with it: > Bride: Polly Harkey > Groom: Abraham Dry > Bond Date: 27 Feb 1830 > County: Cabarrus > Record #: 01 058 > Bondsman: Eli Harkey > Witness: James G. Spears > Bond #: 000007749 Do any of you know if this is a daughter of Jacob Harkey as suggested in the post I sent last night with the information from A. R. Stafford to Rosco Harkey. I would appreciate input from any of you on this. Thanks, Flora
John, You asked that someone connect the HARKEY households in the 1920 Hunt Co. TX census (headed by Mary E., Guy, and Fred E.) to the HARKEYs of North Carolina. Once I collected some census info from earlier years, Pat McAlister's excellent genealogy website made your order easy to fill: < http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pat&id=I39095 > Mary E. HARKEY is the widow of John M. HARKEY; Guy (full name Guy Uriah) and Fred E. are two of their sons. John M. HARKEY is the son of Uriah HARKEY, who is the son of Martin HARKEY, b 13 Feb 1789 Mecklenburg Co. NC, and Catherine CONDER, b 29 Oct 1794. Ta-DAH! You're in North Carolina! If anyone is interested in the census trail, I'll be happy to post it. Pat McAlister, I hope you are reading this. I discovered your website when I was searching for a different John M. HARKEY (Jacob HARKEY Jr.'s son). It is a terrific site, and I could kick myself for not finding it sooner. So much information! Please tell me: How did Addie HARKEY come to be born in Alberta province, Canada? Alma Roark Johnson
I have noticed all the traffic lately on this list and think it's great so maybe it would be a good time for me to post who I'm looking for. My grandfather was John Daniel Harkey, born March 1, 1873 in Gentry county Missouri. His parents were John S. [Solomon?] Harkey and Susannah R. Shaffer. John married Catherine Delilah VULGAMORE November 15, 1888 in Sedgwick County, Kansas. I'm looking for information on the children from this marriage and perhaps getting in touch with some of the descendants. Here are the names of some of the children and their birthdates. I only have a death date for two of them: George Harkey--11/27/1889 William Harkey--11/26/1891 Clarence Harkey--4/23/1894 Harry Harkey--9/17/1896 Catherine Harkey--11/10/1898 --- 2/17/1974 Viola Harkey--4/2/1901 Mary Harkey--7/10/1903 --- 4/7/1998 Catherine died shortly after giving birth to their 8th child in 1907. The child died a few days later. They are both buried in Grandview Cemetery, Grandview, Iowa. John married Roselie WATSON after Catherine died. These would be my grandparents and believe it or not, I don't know when or where they were married. My mother, Gladys Elizabeth Harkey was born August 4, 1913. I have no idea where she was born. I would love to know the answers to these questions. Hoping I've jogged someone's memory. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Donna
Would someone please connect these Harkeys to the NC Harkeys. Thanks. Found in 1920 census for Hunt Co, TX, ED 147, Lone Oak Town., all 3 households on Church St. HH # 206 Guy Harkey 40 TX, father b. Flora, This doesn't constitute an "actual" record, but the marriage is listed at <ancestry.com>: [from "North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868"] Bride: Lenna Fink Groom: Moses M Harkey Bond Date: 28 Sep 1838 County: Cabarrus Record #: 01 088 Bondsman: Abraham Dry Witness: K. Hello List, I sent the following to the list on October 28, 2001 and while digging through papers tonight I found an answer to my question: >>Can anyone tell me who Sarah C. Harkey is? She married James P. ( I think this stands for Perry) Stafford, age 39, on 24 November, 1868 in Yell County. She was age 27 and would have been born about 1841. I do not find any a Sarah C. born about 1841 in any of my Harkey information and I do not find any Sarah C. in my file who married a Stafford.<< This is Sarah Ann Catherine Harkey, daughter of Moses. M. Harkey and wife, Eleanor Fink Harkey. In an old letter from Rosco Harkey Sr. to O. B. Harkey, dated 20 April 1955, Roscoe says he has information sent to his brother, Olga John Harkey, Sr., in 1948. This came from A. R. Stafford who had died within the past year (1954). Roscoe said he assumed the information came from A. R. Stafford's mother's Bible. A . R. Stafford was a son of Sarah Ann Catherine Harkey Stafford and A. R. said his mother was the daughter of Moses M. Harkey. This is the information Roscoe assumed A. R. Stafford took from his mother's Bible, and sent to Rosco Harkey's brother: "Great grandfather of yours and mine Viz: Jacob Harkey lived in Stanley Co. NC. Had (5) five sons Viz: Tice, Levi (grandfather), Jacob, Eli, Mose, and daughters Betsy, Sallie, Poley, Julia, Easter and one other who married Abraham Dye. I did not get her given name. Brothers: Tice moved to San Saba, Texas; Levi (grandfather) moved from NC to Harkey's Valley; Eli died in Harkey's Valley, Yell Co., AR.; Mose died in Harkey's Valley, Yell Co., AR.; Jacob, their brother, my Great Uncle, died in NC." This information from A. R. Stafford, and assumed to have come from his mother's bible, does not match the children we have for Jacob Harkey. Where do we go from here?? Need some feedback on this please. Another thing in this letter that I did not have, and do not know if the rest of you do is: Eleanor Fink, born 16 May 1817. Also, I have a marriage date in my file of 28 Sept. 1838 for Mose & Eleanor, but this letter has it as: Sept. 7, 1838. Does anyone have the actual record on that marriage? Flora
Dear John and all, John, you asked who were the parents of a family found in the 1860 TX Lamar Co., Paris, 7 Pct, hh #93. I think they are grandchildren of John and Agnes HARKEY of Tuscaloosa Co. AL. The father's name was John, the mother's was Nancy. (How fortunate that the oldest was born in a distinctive state!) They can be found in the 1850 MS census: 1850 MS Carroll Co. Hello Group, I have a question. I know Margaret Nan Harkey is related to Eli Columbus Harkey from past e-mails and hopefully she, or someone else from that line can tell me when Eli and family moved to Oklahoma. Eli was son of Levi, and born 10 July 1850. Also, does anyone have the death date from his tombstone. I know Margaret Nan saw the tombstones, but was going to go back and check for the dates. Have not heard if she was able to get back to do this. I have a copy of an old letter dated Oct 8th, 1895. Emma Dooly Harkey is writing her mother who lived at FT. Braggs, Indian Territory (present day Braggs, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma). Emma and family had just returned from a visit to her parents home in Ft. Braggs and she says, " We never come by Uncle Eli's. We drove right through to home". >From the letter I know Emma and William Harkey lived in Logan County, AR. and looking at the route I can't help but wonder where Eli and family were living in October of 1895. Perhaps they were still in AR., but where did they live? If they lived in Harkey Valley Emma would not have driven there. It would have been past her home to the east. So...... Eli had to live to the west of Emma. Was it in Oklahoma? It could not have been at Madill where he died, because that is several hundred miles southwest of Braggs, and they would not have gone that way. Does anyone know if Eli lived in Oklahoma on the route to Braggs before he moved to Madill? Thanks, Flora The

I spent conciderable time researching that information. I was confused and believed that John W. was alive in Burnet Co.TX in 1900. I am relieved to find that the census was of Lucy Harkey Walters not John. I have come to the conclusion that Lucy Caroline HARKEY Walters is my Great Aunt, the sister of my GreatGrandfather William Poindexter Harkey. Thanks for your helpful information. My John Weilie HARKEY was born November 20, 1824 in Cabarrus County NC, near Mt. Pleasant. He married Margaret Corl Nov. 4, 1844, he had a child by her and she died soon after(child named Margaret). John remarried March 2, 1851 in Cabarrus County, NC. John is listed in the Cabarrus Co.1850 census pg.433A hh 461, living single with Peter Lentz and wife. He is listed as a taylor (sic). also his future wife, Mary C. Ridenhour, age 16, residing with Caroline Ridenhour, age 47. pg.482A hh 1219. Next census is, Iredell County, NC. 1860. John is listed age 35, with Mary,age27 with Margaret age 14,James,age 6 and William(my Great grandfather)age 3. Apparently they moved to Illinois around 1862-63 as in later censuses tell of the birth of John F. and Lucy in Illinois. I found John and family in Phelps County Missouri census, dated 1870. Pg 27 ,hh 195, St. James township. Mary C. is next found in the 1880 census pg 17, St. James Township, hh 25. Living as head of household along w! ith JohnF. Lucy, Laura A., Fred W. and Cora E.. I am interested in the 1900 census you have concerning John in Burnet County, Texas. Do you have the page, household numberand district, etc? Of course if this your John Weilie HARKEY then Lucy would by my GGGreat Aunt. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. Regards Jerry Edward HARKEY
I found William Harkey married Dolly Trotter 5 July 1818 in Bibb Co. AL. He would have had to have been born 1800 or earlier. I don't have him in my database. Could his name really have been Harkey? I belong to GenServ and did a search for Dolly Trotter. I found that the woman who had her name in her database also had William's name as HUSKEY. She had no information at all on William Huskey. I can see if the last name was in writing that ar could be mistaken for us or vice versa. The site for those marriages was. I have been asked if this can go on our list. Since it is information it is OK. Dee Harkey was the man who wrote a book called " Mean As Hell" This is about a book written by his sister----------------------------- Would you put this out on the Harkey website as I think it will be of interest to many. There is a "companion" book out that was a diary but published as a book named "Surviving on the Texas Frontier" by Sarah Harkey Hall, sister of Dee Harkey. It is very interesting as it was written by a self educated woman and trials and tribulations of the frontier. She raised Dee after the death of their parents. It is available through Amazon.com.
