There was a fairly good sized migration from the area of Fulda (that includes Sterbfritz) to Hungary. LDS has a book about the migration to Hungary 1710 - 1800. I'll dig out the title.
Hello again, HARKEY-L, In response to my post-- > I'm puzzled by all the surprised reactions to finding HARKEYs > from other countries in the fairly recent U.S. censuses. > Haven't we always known that they didn't all come to America in 1743? Nan replied-- > The puzzlement is not that they came after 1743 > (if that's when "they" came at all). > Its not WHEN they came, but WHERE they came FROM. I should have capitalized the word I meant to be emphasized. Haven't we always known that they didn't ALL come to America in 1743 [or whatever time ours did]? Joseph Harkey, in his history of the North Carolina HARKEYs, notes that "in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, there were more than 30 HARKEYs (and evidently plenty more) living around Grinton in Yorkshire [England]," and he suggests that the name may have gone from England to the European continent. I think I reported to the list a few years ago about cold-calling a HERCHE in New Jersey to see where his family had come from and when they had emigrated. They were from a German-speaking area of Hungary. I can't find a copy of my account, but I think he said that German farmers, including his HERCHE ancestors, had been encouraged to settle in Hungary by whatever government had been in charge at the time. The Internet has a lot of information on the movement of German-speaking peoples. My search was mainly but not exclusively on movement from Hessen into Hungary and Russia. I'll note a few hits--URL, title, and a sentence or two. I may go back and look at England-to-Europe emigration. There's so much to learn, and so little brain left. Alma ==================== 1. BIEBER FAMILY IN HUNGARY AND RUSSIA < http://home.att.net/~long.hair/bieber/russia/main.html > Towards the end of the 19th Century, the Russian government revoked many of the religious and cultural freedoms that had attracted Germans to settle in Russia. This stimulated another wave of migration. The American Midwest received a large number of "Germans from Russia," including members of the Bieber family who settled mostly in the Dakotas. 2. HISTORY OF GERMAN SETTLEMENTS IN SOUTHERN HUNGARY < http://feefhs.org/banat/bhistory.html > At the end of the nineteenth century, there were more than two million Germans living in Hungary. During the eighteenth century, the Habsburg monarchy of Austria, which ruled Hungary at that time, had enticed Germans to emigrate to the unsettled lands of Southern Hungary, which had been devastated by over 150 years of Turkish occupation. From 1711 to 1750, approximately 800 villages were founded in Hungary by German settlers. The Banat Province was one of the primary areas of settlement. . . . . Although there had been German emigration to Hungary prior to this time, the expulsion of the Turks resulted in an organized settlement program sponsored by the Habsburgs. The Habsburgs had three aims: to fortify the land against invasion, to develop farm land, and to further the Roman Catholic Religion in Eastern Europe. Thus they offered Catholics of the southwest German states inducements such as free agricultural land, homesites, construction materials, livestock and exemption from taxes for several years. 3. EMIGRATION FROM GERMANY TOI RUSSIA IN THE YEARS 1763 TO 1862 < http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/pub/articles/clue1974.txt > On page 219, we find Bechtholds leaving the Danzig, West Prussian area for Tiegenhof/Grunau near the Black Sea; Konrad Bechthold from Saarbruecken/Pfalz (Palatinate) going to Freudental/Odessa in 1807; Karl Bechthold from Saarbruecken/Pfalz going to Torschau, Hungary, in 1784 and eventually to Russia. 4. FINDING THE ORIGINS OF 18TH-CENTURY EMIGRANTS FROM SOUTHERN GERMANY < http://www.horlacher.org/germany/articles/ger1700sfw.htm > The eighteenth-century emigrants to southeast Europe in the card index maintained by the 'Heimatstelle Pfalz' have been published by Stefan Stader. . . . For what is nowadays Hesse we have numerous published lists of emigrants to Hungary (16), East Prussia (17) and America (18). =================
We are finding out we are more than we thought we were. Take all different nationalities and combine them into one person and you get an American. I wasn't doing this when thinking or our Harkey/Herche family. I have been puzzled and amazed lately to see strangers showing up in my family. I was possessive. All Harkeys and all Herches were my cousins. They fit, some way, if they didn't seem to fit, the excuse was we just didn't have the proper bit of information to make them fit.. I thought of genealogy as a stream. Somewhere it had one start. The name had one beginning. One day in time , one man got that name. Now it appears that man and his family -- went in lots of different directions. I don't think it is possible for us to go back further looking for our roots. Nina and others have Herche's in Sterbfritz back to 1591-- If they belong to some of us that is great. If Johannes was ours and one of theirs then, there is our immigrant? A problem I see with many of us on the Harkey list is we haven't proven that George Martin was a son of David nor have we found David's other children, and we haven't proven that David was a brother of Martin and we haven't found the parents of Catherine (Barringer? ) We haven't tied in John born in 1765 - with the rest of the family. We saw both Herche and Harkey used in the same document in reference to Martin but we haven't tied in any Herche families directly with Martin line. We are fielding questions about Harkey's born in 1900 ? I don't have them in my database. I apparently haven't realized yet that 1900 was 102 years ago whew! It is difficult for most of us to go off looking for French or Irish or Italian Harkey's in Europe. We don't have access to their records. We will never know how they got to be French, Italian or Hungarian and be named Harkey, Harkay or Herche. This is all sad to me <G> my goal has been to get All Herche/Harkey members inserted into their proper place on this giant peg board in my mind. I'm going to need a bigger hammer to make them all fit <G> Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com
> > I'm puzzled by all the surprised reactions to finding HARKEYs from other > countries in the fairly recent U.S. censuses. Haven't we always known that > they didn't all come to America in 1743? The puzzlement is not that they came after 1743 (if that's when "they" came at all). Its not WHEN they came, but WHERE they came FROM.
Nan and HARKEY-L, I'm sure they weren't documentation errors. I think I found one that you mentioned, STEVEN HARKEY. From the Ellis Island website, I got the following information for ESTVAN (Steven to English speakers) HARKAY. Traveling with him were ANNA HARKAY, 33, and ANNA HARKAY, 8. (The Ohio Miracode says that his wife's name is Anna, b Hungary, so it's a good match.) HARKAY, Estvan Ethnicity: Hungarian Date of Arrival: May 27, 1893 Age: 38y Gender: M Ship of Travel: Zaandam Port of Departure: Rotterdam, South Holland, The Netherlands I'm puzzled by all the surprised reactions to finding HARKEYs from other countries in the fairly recent U.S. censuses. Haven't we always known that they didn't all come to America in 1743? Alma Alma

Paul Herche has asked me to send this on to the list. There was a mix up and he gets list mail but his mail to the list has been bouncing to me . I didn't notice it wasn't going to the list. Mary Harkey Russell bird@scrtc.com Paul wrote this--------- While there appears to be a relationship between Harkeys and Herches it was interesting to see multiple countries of origin for the Harkey family name from the recent 1880 census material. Does this suggest that the change in name goes back beyond the original immigrants to the US? Are there other countries besides Germany and France(and Ireland?) for the Harkey spelling? What do you think the relationship is? Paul Herche upward@interlink-bbs.com

As a descendent of Reuben, I tend to believe he belongs on the list. One piece of evidence is a land sale between John HARKEY and family to Jacob EARNHARDT in Cabarras Co., NC, August 1837. Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of the original document but according to my notes, it lists Catherine, Christopher, Dewalt, Ester, Jesse, John, Margaret, Reuben and Susan as members of the family. The records of Organ Lutheran Church show that Reuben was born 8-27-1819. His father was listed as John Hergi. Most, if not all, of John HARKEY's children were baptized at this church, were they not? Reuben HARKEY and Margaret BOGER had several of their children baptized there. I'm sure there are other pieces of evidence about the family that may point to Reuben not belonging. Can anyone point them out?

Alma, I did find where Doctor Zelas Harkey's name came from. He was named after the North Carolina Methodist minister, Doctor Hazelius Alexander. Doctor Zelas' sister, Nancy Hazeltine Harkey was also named after the minister. Got this from a publication of the Harkey House Historical Society of Gardner, Kansas. Cissy Rose
