Also forgot to add, Robert Lowe's sister, Lucy Jane married a Tucker. This is off the top of my head, will post all that this afternoon as well. One of the Harkey boys, either Robert's brother or son...shows on either the 1910 or 1920 census as being a border with Lucy (Harkey) Tucker, by then she was a widow. will get this all straight yet! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nina Harkey" <nhark@tc3net.com> To: <HARKEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 1:05 PM Subject: Re: [HARKEY-L] Robert Lowe Harkey > Robert Lowe Harkey is my husbands Grandfather... Was looking for various Roberts in my data. Found about 5 or 6 and 2 of them died young. I have Robert Lowe Harkey born in Pope Co. in Sept. 1866 a son of George Washington Harkey. Pope Co. AR. Robert Lowe married a Katie Smith and I have a note that they had 8 children but I do not have them listed. I think I got this from the GenServ database of Charlotte Harrison dallyhunter@aol.com She lives in Oklahoma, I think . I have two Roberts I figure were born in MO. Hello Victor, I read your letter with a great deal of interest. Primarily because I am a Harkey descendant, however there were several other things that generated interest in your story. First, I am a descendant of Moses I. Harkey of Yell County, AR. My father (born 1889 in Yell County, AR.) was raised by Moses Harkey, his grandfather, after his mother and father died. One of the things I am interested in is "WHERE" your father died. Do you have the name of the town/settlement or area where he lived and died? My father settled in the Ada area and it makes me wonder if they were close to each other and knew a Harkey cousin was living in the area. Do you know where they buried your father? Also, what settlement/town was your mother from? I assume she was from that same area, right?? I admit I can't quiet work out your line yet. If I have it correct you think your great-grandfather was named Robert Harkey from AR, possibly from Pope County. His son (your grandfather), John Tucker Harkey (known as "Tucky") was born in Ark, county unknown, in 1876. John Tucker Harkey had a son, (your father) named Robert,, born in 1898 in Crocket Co. Texas. Is this correct? You mentioned your grandfather, John Tucker Harkey lived with an uncle in Texas. Do you have the NAME OF THE UNCLE?? This might be just want we need to zero in on this family. I can't help but believe your line has to connect to those Pope County Harkeys that married into the Tucker family. I would love to know more and will search what records I have to try to help you. I AM sorry Alma. Think I'm just trying to do too much. It doesn't help when one of your lines marries into the other. An example: One of my grandfather Harkey's daughters married a brother of his second wife. Does that make sense? Then when they all feel they have to marry and divorce half a dozen times [slightly exaggerated, but not much] that creates all kinds of fun. I also took on a friends genealogy, Iltalian and trying to keep them all straight with their naming patterns is a challenge so it's my own fault I got things screwed up. I do appreciate the help I've been given...thank you. Since I managed to stumble around and send the Daniel Valentine Harkey information to Alma in a readable format, I will also try to send it to the list. If you get mumbo jumbo signs, you'll know I couldn't figure out what to do twice. Lynn

Alma has a good idea that could benefit all if we would reply to the list. It would keep us all better informed if it was about any of our Harkeys and give us more to delete if it wasn't. I'd rather delete a dozen messages than miss a bit of information I will not set the list so that when you click reply that it comes back to the list. You will have to do that by changing the To: so that no one will be horribly embarrassed by something appearing on the list that they thought they were saying privately. Alma and I have known each other for years and we say some really nasty things to each other in fun. Some replies shouldn't be on a list. So if you think something is genealogy let it go back to the list. If it is private ----- you be the judge. I would like to say something else about Alma. She is like a little dog with a bone. She won't turn loose until all the meat is gone. In other words when she is given a question she won't turn it loose until it is answered correctly-- that is a huge asset for our list. Love to everyone -- it is a beautiful spring like day in Kentucky Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com

Thanks to those who have responded. I will give the information which I have which may seem meager... I will do the best I can here as my eyesight is going, but I am very sure of the things I write here. My grandfather was John Tucker Harkey (known as "Tucky"). He was born in Ark, county unknown, in 1876. He was made to live under the roof of an uncle in Texas at an early age. Your last transmission listed a James married to a Tucker which maybe of some great value or just a colossal co-incidence. This is a data point to keep in mind. He married a Victoria Hargis in 1897 in Texas. Tucky worked as a forman of horse at many ranches through out the southwest and also worked the oil rigs as the need arose. Tucky and Victoria had one son, Robert, born in 1898 in Crocket Co. Texas. He struck out at an early age to Oklahoma Territory and attempted to make his mark in the oil business there. In 1917 Robert married Teskache (Tes) Redland of the Choctaw Nation. My father, Robert, fell prey to the dangers of that trade and was buried near Ada, Okla, in 1922. They had one son, Victor Redland Harkey, born 1921. My mother was induced to come live with my grandfather in Texas, where we remained for some time. Being itenerant in his life moved many times over the southwest. Owing to the Depression and the unfortunate attitude of Texans toward Native people which prevailed at the time, my mother returned to Oklahoma and the safety of her father's house. I remained with my grandfather until I struck out on my own for the Army Air Corps where I remained for 28 years. Now, I do not know if this is any help. However, I am wondering if anyone may have the Census on this Daniel Harkey for the years 1860 and 1870. I remember also that My Grandfather had a sister, Mattie, who lived in Oklahoma. Good morning, Donna and Harkey-L, In a message dated 2/23/02 4:37:48, hyndman@kctc.net writes (numbers are mine): << [1] Nancy, Lynn and Mary wrote back to me off list about my Harkey's. [2] Could you tell me why you say [Daniel died in] Wyandotte, Kansas? [3] Maybe someone out there could help us with Daniels daughter's name....is it Danzilla or Drucilla? [4] I didn't have Charles or Bell listed because I didn't have them. I either missed DeLeans post or wasn't paying attention. >> Re [1]: When queries are posted to the whole list, it would really be useful (for me, anyway) to see the replies or, at least, a notice that someone has replied privately. In the first case, I would be able to update my files on the topic; in the second, I could save myself the time I spend digging out redundant information. I always read the queries and look forward to the replies. Re [2]: DeLean Holtsclaw wrote to you (Donna) via the Harkey list on Aug 24, 1999: << Donna, Bell C. Harkey is Daniel Valentine Harkeys daughter, not John Harkey's daughter. And Daniel had another one named Charles Harkey. . . . >> DeLean Holtsclaw later wrote to the Harkey list, on Jun 15, 2000: << I found this: 1875 KS Census, Quindaro, Wyandotte Co. KS, date 3-1-1875, Dwelling 239, family 239. Page 34 reads (my names and ages): Daniel Harkey, 66, farmer, NC (Daniel Valentine Harkey age 51) --Elizabeth, 47, f, W, NC (Elizabeth H. Walcher age 470 --J.D., 21, M, W, IL (Jacob D. Harkey age 21) --H. H., 15, F, W, IL (Hulda H. Harkey age 15) --W. H., 12, M, W, IL (William H. Harkey age 13) --A. M., 12, F [sic], W, IL (Augustus M. Harkey age 13) --C. F., 7, M, W, IL (Charles F. Harkey age 6) --C. B., 4, F, W, MO (Bell C. Harkey age 3 So Daniel died in Kansas between 1875 and 1880 in Wyandotte Co., Sumner Co., or between. Take care, DeLean >> Aha! Only now do I notice "Sumner Co., or between." I shouldn't have assumed he died in Wyandotte Co. KS. However, there is no other reference to Sumner Co. in the file. There is a Sumner Co. in Kansas (and in lots of other states), but no Sumner Co. in Missouri. DeLean, if you are reading this, could you clarify? Re [3]: When I read "Drucilla," I was copying from the census entry itself in the National Archives microfilm. That doesn't necessarily mean that Daniel's daughter is named Drucilla, only that I didn't get the name from anyone else. Re [4]: Covered under [2]. Whew! Alma
