    3. Can anyone place Ray Harkey for me? Seems I do not have him or his siblings. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ar/lonoke/obituaries/obit11-98.txt ENGLAND - Ray Harkey, a retired farmer, age 89 years, of England passed away Saturday, Oct 31, 1998. Mr. Harkey was a member of the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by sisters, Gladys and Jean, and by brothers, Glenn and Roy. Mr. Harkey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vada Jane George Harkey; sister Margie Burkhead of Dallas; daughters, Rose Carolyn Lipscomb of England, and Mary Margaret Dawson of Little Rock; grandchildren, Dr. John Lipscomb of Ohio, Margaret Lipscomb Page of California, and John Stephen Dawson of Tennessee; five great-grandchildren; and many friends. Mr. Harkey was born Oct. 19, 1909, on Crow Mountain near Russellville in Pope County, and his family moved to Tomberlin in 1918 to till the more fertile bottom lands. He spent his life coaxing a living from the soil and with his wife raised a successful and loving family. He hunted and fished the area, particularly enjoying time spent on Bayou Meto. Mr. Harkey delighted his family with tales of his mules and their antics, as well as of his comrades and their outdoor enjoyments. We will miss his laughter and jokes which were always accompanied by a twinkle in his blue eyes. Services will be held Tuesday (3 Nov 1998) at 10 a.m. at Wilson-Stephens Funeral Chapel in England. Interment will be at Mulberry Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today (2 Nov 1998) at the funeral home.

    3. Daniel David Harkey who went to Dunklin Co. MO had a son named William M Harkey. William had 3 wives and I had them listed as Mary Donaldson, Jerusha Mizell and Fanny Davidson. No problem there but I had a Daughter LULA Harkey born 1778 listed with Fanny Davidson as her mother----- In the 1880 census Lula is listed age 2 living with her grandparents DONALDSON. Did I transpose the names when I wrote them in and his first wife was really Mary Davidson and Fanny was really Donaldson??????????? Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com

    2. Dear Nina and Harkey-L-- Sorry, I wrote the previous request for citation without bothering to search myself. Here is one source, as well as mention of the death of Mose HARKEY: "Handbook of Texas Online: Cottonwood Mott Line" http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/CC/apc10.html COTTONWOOD MOTT LINE CAMP. Cottonwood Mott, named for the motte or cluster of trees that grew near some weeping springs on the headwaters of the Middle Pease River, is the site of what was probably the first house in Motley County. The log house was built by Frank Collinson twelve miles west of Matador in the winter of 1878 and was originally part of a line camp shared by the Jinglebob and Hall Ranch cowboys, whose job was to ride the line between ranges, pushing their respective herds back toward their headquarters. Perhaps because of its distance from the civilizing forces even of the ranch center, Cottonwood Mott was the site of at least two gunfights. A shoot-out occurred on January 1, 1880, when line riders Jim Barbee of the Jingle Bob Cattle Company and Jim HARKEY of J. M. Hall's Spur Cattle Company disagreed over the singing of "Yankee Doodle." Taking offense at Harkey's song, Barbee drew his gun and mortally wounded him; HARKEY drew and killed Barbee. Two freighters from San Saba witnessed the shooting, notified authorities, and helped bury the two side by side in a grave only eighteen inches deep and dug with an ax. After Henry H. Campbellqv bought the Jinglebob herd and its free-range claim from the Coggin brothersqv and R. K. Wylie of Brownwood in 1881, the line camp was controlled by the Matador Ranchqv and was later purchased by the Matador Land and Cattle Company.qv From March 23, 1883, to September 21, 1885, Frank M. Drace served as postmaster of Old Lyman from the family home at Cottonwood Mott, offering mail service to the sparsely settled region. In 1888 Drace became enraged at Mose HARKEY, a boarding Matador hand, and drew on him. The two exchanged shots and HARKEY died the next day, thus becoming the second member of the family to die in a shoot-out at Cottonwood Mott. The log cabin was replaced by a box strip house, and Cottonwood Mott, one of at least twenty line camps of the Matador Ranch, served as a batch camp or home to cowboys and their families until the ranch was split up in 1951. A Texas historical marker for the camp was granted in 1986. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Dee Harkey, Mean As Hell (Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1948). Matador Tribune, August 22, 1940. W. M. This snippet I originally found at Texas Chronicles Online or something like that, will have to hunt it up again. I thought I had posted the story before, there is more to it at another site if I remember correctly. 2. Dear Harkeys, I finally managed to see enough of the Big Uncle Cemetery website to read of the deaths of James L. Harkey, "killed by Jim Barbee" in 1880; John A. Harkey, "killed by Augustus 'Gus' Stephenson" in 1878; and Mose Harkey in 1888, "killed by Mr. Drace." What happened? Was there a range war? Does anyone else have a problem with the Big Uncle Cemetery website, <http://www.rootsweb.com/~txssaba/uncle.html> ? Every time I tried to get into it, it opens, I see the angel and the bright sky background, and start to read the first page; and within a few seconds the angel and sky disappear and a continuous flutter begins while the computer is "collecting data," "receiving .jpeg documents," etc., over and over again. I managed to wrestle it into temporary submission by scrolling down, then freezing the screen by holding down the scroll bar with one hand while I copied information with the other. It happens every time. Alma http://www.rootsweb.com/~txssaba/uncle.html

    1. [HARKEY-L] Joseph & Henrietta HARKEY, San Saba TX 1880, 1900
    2. Dear Harkeys, I wish I had paid more attention in the past to the ARK > San Saba families, because I am not playing catch-up very well while trying to trace Victor Harkey's father and grandfather. Can anyone unknot this latest kink? Victor said that after his father, Robert HARKEY, died in Ada OK in 1921, Victor's mother, Tes, took Victor to Crockett Co. TX to live with Robert's father, John Tucker HARKEY. Tes eventually returned to her family in the Choctaw Nation, but Victor remained (in Crockett Co.?) with his grandfather. I hoped that I could trace John Tucker HARKEY's family beginning with the 1920 Crockett Co. census and working back. Nothing turned out the way I wanted it to, but I am wondering whether the Crockett Co. HARKEYs are an offshoot of the San Saba Co. HARKEYs and whether Victor's grandfather might be one of them. Specifically, does anyone have information on the ancestry and descendants of Joseph M. and Henrietta HARKEY, who were living in San Saba in 1880? I'll take the censuses year by year. // 1920 // I hoped to find John "Tucky" HARKEY in the 1920 Crockett Co. TX census Soundex, but I did not--at least it isn't obvious that I did. What I did find were two HARKEY entries which in the census would appear on the same page: 1920 TX Crockett Co. ED 24-8 (Soundex) HARKEY, JIM 38 TX --Eula wife 19 TX --Lee William son 2 3/12 TX --Koeke Kennie dau 1 2/12 TX 1920 TX Crockett Co. ED 24-8 (Soundex) HARKEY, LEIGH boarder [age n.r.] (enum w Charlie Callahan) When I look up these households in the actual census, I will look closely at the name of the child, Koeke Kennie. If that is how it is spelled, could it be a Choctaw name? // 1910 // I then looked for a HARKEY in the 1910 Crockett Co. Soundex. I found one person: 1910 TX Crockett Co. ED 32-2 (Soundex) HARKEY, LEE B. 17 (enum. with Homer J. Tippett) // 1900 // I found no HARKEY family in the 1900 Crockett Co. census, but the given name "Lee" seems to persist in this family, so I searched the TX census for any HARKEY family with a 7-to-9-year-old boy named Lee. I found such a family in San Saba Co.--Joseph and Henrietta HARKEY--but the family were away from home (visiting Joseph's sister's family, judging by the David & Sarah HALL census entry) and the census-taker got his sketchy information from the neighbors: 1900 TX San Saba Co. 2 Just. Pct. (1668 2 193), hh 259-263 HARKEY, HENRIETT* head "male" 1848 52 m  5ch/5liv --James son 1881 19 s TX AR --Jefferson son 1886 14 s TX AR --Lee son 1892 8 s TX AR [Census taker's note: "Information as to names and ages obtained from a neighbor, also acreage & produce. These people are away from home and this information is best I can get."] Although the census index gives "Henry???" and the entry says "male," it is probably Henrietta, a female, because the number of children born/living is given. Henrietta's husband, Joseph M. HARKEY, is listed in David HALL's household (David's wife is Joseph's sister, Sarah Caroline): 1900 TX San Saba Co. 2 Just. Pct. (1668 2 189), hh 192-196 HALL, David head May 1852 438 m25 TX TN -- stock farmer --Sarah C. wife Mar 1857 43 m25 10ch/6liv TX SC VA --Essie M. dau Mar 1882 18 s TX TX TX --James M. son Oct 1885 14 s TX TX TX --Burney son Aug 1891 8 s TX TX TX --David C. son Mar 1894 6 s TX TX TX --Minor son Jun 1897 2 s TX TX TX HARKEY, JOSEPH M. bro-in-law Dec 1851 48 m AR SC VA // 1880 // [Taken from the LDS CD-ROM, not from the actual census] 1880 TX San Saba Co. 2 pct. (T9-1326 p447A) HARKEY, Joseph head 28 m AR NC -- --Henrietta wife 29 m AR -- -- keeping house --David brother 14 s TX NC -- works on farm --Moses J. brother 12 s TX NC -- works on farm --John David son 2 s TX AR AR --Samuel J. son 1 s TX AR AR --Sarah E. dau 4/12 s TX AR AR MAN, Granville stepson 25 s KY KY KY --Sallie stepdau 20 s KY KY KY HALL, Margaret niece 9 s TX TN AR --Tenn niece 7 s TX TN AR --John M. nephew 5 s TX TN AR CONCLUSION Except for a presence in 1920 Crockett Co. TX, none of the above matches any of Victor's clues! But the possibly incomplete or incorrect information on Joseph and Henrietta's household in 1900 leaves a door, well, not quite open, but slightly ajar. Any ideas? One last question. I came across a Yell Co. marriage with names that reminded me of the census entries above. Does anyone recognize this marriage? E. Tenora HARKEY m Joseph C. LEIGH 30 Sep 1878 Yell Co. AR E. Tenora HARKEY may have died not long after marriage, because I found a Joseph C. LEIGH in the 1900 census, age 47, living in Dardenelles, Yell Co., with a different wife of 17 years. It never ends . . . . Alma Roark Johnson

No Catherine MOODY was listed, but generally only heads of households and individuals with surnames different from the head of household get into the index, and Catherine may have been living with an older son or another MOODY/MOUDY family. 3. Catherine was a daughter of Levi Harkey and Julia Ann Lipe. She was twin sister of Caroline Barbara Harkey who married Riley Harkey . Catherine married James Moudy and we have that reference in the Gunter letter that her husband was beaten and hung by Federal Troops. This apparently happened in Harkey's Valley Yell Co. AR. I think that Catherine and James Moudy had one son named Alonzo Carroll Moudy. I think that Catherine went to San Saba TX. as a widow and died there about 1878. I have a descendant a 3rd great grand daughter of Catherine, asking me for information and I have none to give her. Did Catherine appear on the 1870 census and if so where was she? Is there any further record of her son Alonzo C. Moudy. Is he on the 1880 census and if so where? Seems I'm pretty good at asking questions and pretty bad at answers. <G> Mary Harkey Russell----- in cold and dreary Kentucky bird@glasgow-ky.com
