Can someone help me identify this Harkey from the Obituary and Death notices of Pope County, Arkansas by J.B. Lemley & Elaine Weir Obit August 13, 1896- this community was shocked last Saturday morning to hear of the death of one of our best and most promising young men- John D. Harkey, one of the few remaining pioneers of Pope County, at the family residence near town. John had sick but a few weeks, and his illness was not considered at all serious until Thursday before his death. The funeral, one of the saddest ever witnessed here, was held Sunday morning at the Christian Chruch, services being conducted by the Revs. McWilliams, Granger and Green. After the cermony the cortege repaired to the Russellville Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground, in the presence of a large concourse. The deceased had just entered his twenty-second year, and had been a member of the Christian church about four years. Thanks Judith Harkey Carley

Here's one we can definitely relate to. Received it from a list I'm on. THE THIRTEEN COMMANDMENTS FOR NAMES: (1) Thou shalt only name your male children: James, John, Joseph, Jonathan, Richard, Thomas or William (2) Thou shalt only name your female children: Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Sarah or Virginia (3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children. (4) Thou shalt, after naming your children from the above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as: Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, Sukey.---making them as difficult to trace as possible. (5) Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal documents or census reports, and use only initials on all legal documents. (6)Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled, in various ways: Hicks, Hicks, Hix, Hixe, Hucks, Kicks (7) Thou shalt, after no more than 3 generations, make sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned in a court house fire, or buried so that NO future trace of them can be found (8) Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors, & vague innuendo regarding your place origination. (A) you may have come from : England, Ireland, Scotland,Wales....or Iran. (B) you may have American Indian ancestry of the______tribe...... (C) You may have descended from one of three brothers that came over on a ship from______ (9) Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or headstones with legible names. (10) Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of birth, marriages, or deaths. (11) Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy records in the names of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart, or Alfred. (12) Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank is an acceptable alternative. (13) Thou shalt name at least 5 succeeding generations of males, and dozens of their cousins with identical names in order to totally confuse researchers.

I came across another item at ebay which got me curious. Who is this L S Harkey? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1083551699 THE RAILROAD EVANGELIST 1970 at another site I found this: http://www.wheaton.edu/bgc/archives/guides/378.htm Historical Background The Railroad Evangelistic Association, formed in 1941, grew out of the work of L. S. Harkey. He began putting out a publication entitled The Railroad Evangelist and it was his desire to start a fellowship organization for Christians in the train industry and their families, an organization that would help arrange Sunday services for train workers who could not go to church, distribute literature, and evangelize other train workers. After a couple of years of effort, the REA was formally organized at a meeting in Sanford, FL, in January 1941. The Railroad Evangelist, with Harkey continuing as editor, became the official magazine of the group. Herman Rose, an Indiana realtor and train buff, soon became an important member of the group and for most of the REA's existance was its secretary-treasurer and editor of the magazine. His home in Indiana became the center of the organization. The main activities of the group included putting out the magazine, holding annual conventions ! for fellowship and Christian nurture, printing tracts and supporting field evangelists who worked among unsaved railroad men and women. Membership was open to any Protestant who could sign the statement of faith. Eventually membership was opened to Catholics as well.

For some time I had been worried about Tom because his address bounced off the list. I finally put a letter into the mail last week. His wife Sharon phoned me just now. On October 16, 2001 Tom died suddenly and totally unexpectedly. He was 58 years old. They had been married over 32 years. Sharon said she had been unable to notify any of his friends because of not knowing who he wrote to and she has also had trouble getting AOL to give his password. Tom had been with the Harkey list from the very beginning and maybe even before. He was one of my favorite people and I am devastated at his loss. Can we go on the assumption that the Herche Clan was Lutheran? I would think, yes. I had some records from the church that I found online, had a hard drive failure since then (was in the summer or early last fall I found this stuff, I think). It included one Herche and one Heche, missplelled I assume. Also Lotz, Scherer and Wiegand and a few others, if memory serves me correctly. The main record focus was on the Pfaul/Paul/Pauli and Luthy/Luthi/Luthey line. Does anyone remember this? Cannot find it again to save my life. In any case, there was notation as to where the records were looked at. It was reviewed in Germany, that much I remember. The records are not available thru the LDS as far as I know, will have to check again. There are many Lutheran records archived in Germany for the Fulda - Sinntal area and are housed in Schlüchtern. It may not be neccessary to go thru individual parishes. Some churches are very "protective" of their files. Germany has vast privacy laws and often before a church official will even consider you looking at his books you must apply in writing and state relathionship, intention and what you are looking for. Often times they will not let anyone touch the old books for fear they will crumble.
Hello Harkeys, Nina's post yesterday about the Johannes Herche possibilities was thought provoking. Does anyone who reads this list have copies of or have you seen copies of the German records to substantiate the dates and other information submitted to the LDS Ancestral file and IGI? We need these proofs. The records are not listed in the LDS library as filmed and sometimes letters to Germany take forever or never return at all. In the past, have talked to Richard Turk. He said he got the information from Don Harkey, TX. Then I called Don Harkey and he said he got his information from Richard Turk. We are going in circles here Harkeys. Please shed some light if you can. Kay At 04:05 PM 3/6/2002 -0500, you wrote: >There has been much discussion about Johannes Herche, when did he get to >the Colonies, or even if. There has been much discussion about Johannes Herche, when did he get to the Colonies, or even if. With a lot of snooping around I have so far only been able to get one close relative of Johannes into the States. This is from Dee Harkey's book, Mean as Hell. He was the younger brother of Jim Harkey. Joe named here is the oldest of the children. Sarah Harkey Hall is his sister, she wrote the Texas Frontier book. Father was Daniel Riley Harkey. The day of the killing, they both got back to the camp early and lay around the camp. Barbee told Jim that day the reason he was out there was because he had had a difficulty with his father and had tried to stab him with a butcher knife. Jim had been chiding Barbee about attempting to stab his father, and that seemed to be why Barbee shot him. Jim started to fix something to eat, and he was singing "Yankee Doodle". Barbee told him that anyone who would sing a song like that was a damned fool." Jim thought Barbee was joking, so he said, "You're a liar, that's a damned good song." So Barbee went outside, revolved his pistol, and came back to the door and ran his left arm between the cracks of the log house and around the door facing. He told Jim that he was going to kill him, and he shot at the same time. Jim had his pistol buckled around him. The bullet Barbee fired hit Jim over the right hip and came out over the left hip. They shot four times each. Jim shot Barbee four times through the heart, but Barbee hit Jim only the one time. Barbee dropped his pistol and fell, and Jim laid his pistol across Barbee's and walked outside. He met the freighter for the Hall Ranch who had just got there. Jim gave the facts of the shooting to him. The freighter told Jim that he saw Barbee come out of the house as he was driving up! and revolve his pistol and walk back to the door. Jim saddled his horse and sent the freighter over to Hall'' headquarters for Dick Hudson, who was the Hall brother's boss. When Hudson came, Jim told him all about the shooting and then told him what he wanted done with his money and belongings. Then Jim laid down and died in a few minutes. Hudson and the freighter rolled Barbee and Jim up in a pair of blankets and a wagon sheet, and laid them side by side in a grave about eighteen inches deep which they dug with an axe. About five months later, Joe rigged up a team and spring wagon and sent me to bring Jim's body back home to bury in the family graveyard at Richland Springs. He gave me a .44 Winchester and two boxes of cartridges to take with me. I got a boy named Hall to go with me, and Joe armed him also. Joe had a coffin made and put it in a box made air tight, then he put chains around the box and fastened it down to the wagon so it would not move. Joe gave me a batch of grub - flour, coffee, etc. - and a cooking outfit, and we pulled out. It was about 350 miles to where Jim's body was buried. It took us 21 days to reach our destination. When I got to Buffalo Gap, I got a letter from Jim Barbee's father saying he had been up there and got his son's body, or he thought it was his sons body, and had carried it home and buried it in their family graveyard, and if I found that he had Jim Harkey's body that I should take his boy's body and give it a nice burial. ******Excluded here details of the trip until they got to Jim's grave****** Jim had a ring on his finger that had his initials on it and I knew I could identify him by that. We dug him up and turned the sheet and the blanket back so we could see him. Except that his hair had grown about six inches, he was perfectly normal until the air hit him; then the flesh fell from his body and nothing was left but the skeleton. I took him up and put him in the coffin and fastened it down. Then I put the coffin in the box and we fastened it to the wagon bed and started back for home. Before we got to Buffalo Gap, the gas from the corpse was so strong that it pushed the box until the chains were buried deep in it. I went over to the blacksmith and he cut up some wagon tires and made bands and then he drew this box back down until the odor was practically eliminated. We were probably twenty-one days coming back, but everything was ready for Jim's burial when we got home. I have been asked, would I send a twelve-year old boy, like I was then, on such a trip today, even now when there are no Indians. At the time I never thought about being only twelve, I guess in those days there was more than the grown men could tend to, and we youngsters helped without thinking much about it.

William had 3 wives and I had them listed as Mary Donaldson, Jerusha Mizell and Fanny Davidson. No problem there but I had a Daughter LULA Harkey born 1778 [1878] listed with Fanny Davidson as her mother----- In the 1880 census Lula is listed age 2 living with her grandparents DONALDSON. Did I transpose the names when I wrote them in and his first wife was really Mary Davidson and Fanny was really Donaldson??????????? >> Mary, William M. HARKEY, b 1829 GA, did have three wives, but in a different order from what you have: He married (1) Jerusha Adeline MIZELL, b 1837 TN, d 6 Nov 1876 MO. Six children b bet 1855 and abt 1874; William, Street, Mary B., Newton, Ralph, and Rosa. He married (2) Mary DONALDSON. One child: Lula M. HARKEY, b Jul 1878 He married (3) (1 May 1879) Fanny DAVIDSON. May have had one child: Ethel HARKEY [ref. Lora Harkey Scott, "The Harkeys of Dunklin Co."] Since William did not marry Miss DAVIDSON until 1879, Lula, b 1878, must be Mary (DONALDSON) HARKEY's daughter. The appearance of 2-year-old Lula HARKEY in her grandfather DONALDSON's household is one of those duplications that occur occasionally in the census, because Lula is also reported in the household of her father and his third wife: 1880 MO Dunklin Co. Cotton Hill Twp, ED 42-11, #72-73 HARKEY, Wm. M. 51 GA NC GA dry goods merchant --Fannie wife 20 MO MO MO --Ralf son 9 MO GA TN --Rosa dau 6 MO GA TN --Lula dau 2 MO GA TN I couldn't find Wm. M. or Fanny in the 1900 Dunklin Co. MO census when I first looked ten years ago, and I can't find him now. Alma
