Hello to all: I need help! I am still feeling my way along with this history stuff. My Great-Grandfather was Christopher Columbus Harkey. His father was John WalkerHarkey, mother was Nancy Killingsworth. I would like to know where Christopher is buried in Arkansas. Also want to find out if his son William Washinton had bro./sis., from Christopher & Lucinda Harkey, I know there where half bro/ sis. from Nancy Broughton in Arkansas. William Washington Harkey, my grandfather ended up in Tuscaloosa, Ala. I have his wifes & all his children info, but would like to extend my history if I can. Some of my cousins think they also lived in area called Red Bay, Ala. ,it's little town on state line Ala. & Miss. Help me if you can. Jane
Good to talk to you again, lots of water under the bridge since we last communicated, by snail mail in those days. Yes, I quit Harkey hunting in 1972!!! when I was promoted to a six day a week job and didn't have time. I retired in 1998 and slowly got interested in this again but have things changed! your brother, Cliff, right? contacted me when I first got started again. he said you were living the life of Riley now. I have not learned much more than when we meaning Lillian Lowance, Joe Cook, you and I were at it constantly. I have a couple of knotty problems and am trying to sort them out. I was off kilter and spinning out of control when I wrote that John who married Sarah Walcher could be Jacob's son. Alma sent me a nice reply and supplied me with info that I knew nothing about which proves I was wrong. So, here goes. Let me run it by you for your opinion. Based on the info supplied by Alma, John Harkey whose wife was Sarah Walcher, was born 4 Apr., 1789, he was orphaned and was bound to Jonas Lipe of Cabarrus Co. but ran away when he was 19 which would be 1808. He married Sarah in 1811 and moveed to IL in 1830 along with other Harkeys and family members. He is listed as having 3 children however, one Sidney Levi Harkey states that he was John' and Sarah's son and was born 3 Apr., 1827. He is not listed in John's will of 1862 but his other children and grandsons were. Sidney says his grandfather was also named John and died when John 7 was years old, that would be ca. 1796. Based on the old 20 year rule of thumb, he would be born abt. 1776. The only other known John during that period was John b. ca.1765, son of Martin Luther Harkey Sr. OK, so where did he come from, I ask? All the known sons of Martin Harkey Sr. were too young to have this John, I'm thinking, but then I think of the shadowy David or John David Harkey a/k/a Tory David. He is the right age( someone gave him a birthdate of 1745) and joins the British army and then flees to Canada after the war and is never heard again. Remember, the Widow Harkey has one male over 16 in 1790 which means he was born 1774 or earlier. I have always felt that the Widow Harkey was David's wife or widow as we do not know if he was alive or not. Since we are only talking 2 years, there could be a connection. The legend has always been there were three brothers who moved to NC but we never found a John who would be a brother to David and Martin Luther, Oh, I'm sure his name was John, what else would it be? Knotty problem #2 is I have this family of David Harkey, a Methodist minister born 11 Oct., 1793 and has 4 wives marrying the first on 4 June, 1818. He lives and dies in Verona, MS on 10 Nov., 1861 and has 18 children by the four wives. None of my bond records, church records even gets close to him. So, I assume he is either in Montgomery, Iredell or Rowan co., NC. Any ideas? In his childrens names are the usual, John, David, Martin, Daniel but no Jacob so I have ruled out Jacob Harkey b. 1768, besides there was no bond record for him in Cabarrus co.
Sid, I may be wrong, but I think it has been pretty well established that the John HARKEY (b 4 Apr 1789) who married Sarah WALCHER is *not* the son of Jacob HARKEY and Catherine TETER. The evidence I have seen that John HARKEY had other parents is twofold. 1. The first evidence consists of two documents written by John and Sarah (Walcher) HARKEY's son, Sidney Levi HARKEY, in the possession of and shared by his descendant, Nancy Broersma. Here is an excerpt from one of the documents, the "Private Journal of Sidney Levi HARKEY," written abt 1883-1888: "I was born in Iredell County, North Carolina, April 3d 1827. My father's name was John HARKEY, my mother's maiden name was Sarah WALCHER. Father's father died when he was 7 years old, and his mother married the 2d time a man by the name of EFIRD. Father was the only child of his father, and his father's name was also John. . . My father was bound out to a cruel Uncle by the name of Jonas LIPE, when 7 years of age, from whom he ran away when 19 years old." The second document by Sidney Levi HARKEY, a letter written to his daughters, repeats basically the same information, except that (if I am reading it correctly) it says that John HARKEY's father was named Martin. There may be some other document, one I don't have, that settles the issue of the name of John HARKEY's father, whether it is John or Martin--or both. 2. The second piece of evidence supports Sidney Levi's account. It is an excerpt or abstract from the "Minutes of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Cabarrus County," and was posted by Mary Russell a few years ago: "Tuesday, April 22, 1794 --- John HARGE, an orphan aged 5 years be bound as apprentice of Jonas LIPE as a shoemaker for the term of 16 years, the said Master to pay the sum of 4 pounds and a set of shoemaker tools exclusive of what the Law directs." I am persuaded that the orphan John HARGE and the John HARKEY who married Sarah WALCHER are the same person. Jacob HARKEY died about 1847 and so would not have left an orphaned son in 1794. Alma
I replied that after looking things over, I believe that John Harkey that married Sarah Walcher in 1811 was the son of Jacob Harkey and Catherine Teter. I base this on the knowledge that John was born 1788-1789 from IL census records and Jacob was born 1768 which would be just about right agewise. Jacob's brothers John lived in Mecklenberg Co., and Henry lived in Rowan Co. while David lived in both Mecklenberg and Cabarrus Co., however he was too young to have had this John, Martin Luther Jr. was born 1771 which would make him approximately 16 when John was born. Therefore, since John, b. 1788-1789 was married in Cabarrus Co., in 1811 and all of Jacob's other children were married there (from the marriage bonds) it is assumed he would be the first born child of Jacob and Catherine. What threw me for the longest time was Walter Sanders records had the other Harkeys in Bond Co., IL as coming from Iredell Co., NC. I assumed John did also but I could never put it together. We know that there were Harkeys from two counties that moved from NC to AR in 1839, why not Harkeys from two counties to IL in 1830? After all, they were cousins and most wagon trains traveled together for protection from the elements and the Indians a/k/a hostiles. If anyone has proof I am all wet, please let me know so I can correct my records now that I have moved John to Jacob's family. Sid
My records show that John Harkey's parents were John Harkey (son of Martin Harkey) and Elisabeth Doub. I have no information about Elisabeth Doub's parents. I would be interested in learning what information he/she has about John and Sarah and their children.
If Elisabeth was Doub rather than Dove, then she was from Forsyth Co, NC - Doubs married Petrees there; a Petree married Dorothy Bost of Cabarrus Co. And moved to Cabarrus abt 1795. But Doubs in Cabarrus? Hmm. Who can tell me anything about Clyde Carl Harkey the son of Israel Jeff Harkey 1854 and Freelove Cornett who married in 1875? Clyde was one of their last children but I have no dates on him. Could Clyde Carl Harkey have married a Laura Pinkney Watkins in 1917 and lived in Mule Creek New Mexico? I have a lady trying to connect and waiting for a reply. Cameron Graham said in an email to Harkey-L that when he was a small child he met his Uncle Clyde who lived on a ranch in New Mexico. I would like a tiny bit more proof than that before I tell this lady a yes. <G> Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com
