Hi Mary-- You asked for a reply to the list about John HARKEY who married Christina BEAVER. I don't see any reply, so I'll offer what little I have. No one will confuse it with proof. Joseph Harkey's history has the same dates as you do for John HARKEY, but in my copy of it, where I insert my own notes, after John's death date of 1846 I added in brackets a different date, so that it now reads "d 21 Feb 1846 [1826?]. I may have arrived at 1826 by looking at the Cabarrus Co. censuses. In 1830 I did not find a John HARKEY in Cabarrus Co., but I did find a Christianah, age 30-40, with 5 males ages 5-20 and with 4 females ages 0-15. The youngest child is a female aged 0-5. Also, in 1840 (but looking no further than the census index), I did not find a John, but I did find a Crissey HARKEY. Then, in 1850, Christina is living with her daughter, Susannah McDANIEL. The absence of John but the presence of Christina in 1830 and 1840 does suggest that John died much earlier than 1846. Although no spring chicken, Christina would still have been of childbearing age in 1830, but by 1830 she had borne her last child. It's not proof, but it is circumstantial evidence. Alma

In response to John Speight's research about Doubs (Elisabeth Doub, mother of John Harkey "Jr.",married to John Harkey "Sr.") not being in Cabarrus: I had copied a handwritten family history and the name Doub was hard to read, and this was my best guess. Others have suggested it could be Dove, not Doub. I don't have anything to document either name. Maybe someone else does? Nancy B.

Another question. I have been informed that the will of Christina Beavers father Christopher Beaver, written in 1833 shows her as a widow of John Harkey . I have a birth date of April 4, 1789 and death date of Feb, 21, 1846 -- I do not have a copy of the will but have no reason to doubt the fact it said that. Do we have any other proof of either a birth date or a death date for this John. I know of at least two or three people on this list who are descendants. Please reply to the list. I have a friend asking me this and although I must have a dozen Jacob Harkey in my data I do not seem to have this one? HELP! Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bird The one that I'm working on is Jacob S. Harkey. There seems to be so many with that name "Jacob" that I'm beginning to feel like a dog chasing his own tail. I don't know who his parents were or if he was ever married. I know that he homesteaded some land in Logan County. He also sold some land in Logan County to A.R. Lasater in 1904, and on that deed it says he was unmarried. If I'm not mistaken, Jacob was a J.P. and married several couples. I know that I haven't given you much to go on. If you have any info on him, would you care to share it with me?
John and Alma and list-- having read what Alma found. Are we all going to list Martha J as Burleyson and not Harkey. It seems an obvious thing and a correct thing to do. Does any one know who or when she married and what name she used at that time? Mary Harkey Russell bird@glasgow-ky.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bird Subject: Re: [HARKEY-L] Martha J. *not* daughter of Martin HARKEY & Judith BOWERS
Dear Harkey list, While nosing around the Internet this morning, I did a google.com search for "Martin Harkey" and came upon a website called "The Family of Joseph and Nancy Rogers Burleyson." The URL is http://home.triad.rr.com/jdburleson/joseph_and%20_nancy_burleson.htm It is an account of the disposition of the property and children of the BURLEYSON family after the parents' death in late 1847 or early 1848 in Stanly Co. NC. In February 1848, their 8-year-old daughter, Martha Jane BURLEYSON, was bound to Martin HARKEY, who had also been appointed administrator of Mrs. Burleyson's estate. Therefore, in the 1850 Stanly Co. NC census, the household of Martin HARKEE contains a 10-year-old female, Martha J., who is *not* a HARKEY at all! 1850 NC Stanly Co. Ridenhours Dist. 4 (645 27), hh 395-396 HARKEE, MARTIN 50 NC farmer $370 --Judith 47 NC --Emaline 17 NC --Henry 17 NC laborer --Martin A. 14 NC --Martha J. 10 NC Maybe this is old news to some of us, but I sure didn't know anything about it. There's more about Martha Jane at the webpage, and I found it interesting. Alma
