Well, hello to everyone. I am just sending a quick message as I am preparing to go to San Saba for the Harkey/Taylor Reunion being held this weekend. I am very excited about the chance to meet some of our families in the area. While I am on line, I just want to say that if anyone is in the Tucson area at any time, please give me a call, stop by and just know you are always welcome. I have found so much family I didn't know I had, I am anxious to meet you all! I will get a note off when I return and let everyone know what I have learned about our family. I have had a great time through the net and I think that without it, there must be agonizing hours spent looking for something that someone else already has!! I will gladly share any information I have at this time...my GEDCOM has about 1950+ names and I will gladly share a copy with anyone who sends their address to me...I have found there are problems sending it through the email..I was told it is too large and so sometimes it gets distorted..alas, we do need snail mail at times...I would love a GEDCOM from anyone who wants to share.. Laura Branton 4032 South Grand Palm Drive Tucson, Arizona 85730 1-520-790-7639 By the way, for those of you I haven't already communicated with, my Harkey connection is through William J. Brigham who married Martha Jane Harkey (from the Isaac Matthias lineage)...their daughter Katie Alice Brigham married James Allen Haynes...their daughter Mattie Ethel Haynes married Buford Baxter Branton...their son James Buford Branton married Lois Virginia Tucker...my parents. Hope all is well with everyone and I will talk to you all after Tuesday. Be sure to send addresses if you want a GEDCOM...Laura
I have been hearing about a Harkey family reunion in San Saba Texas. I am not sure of the exact time or date but want to ask any of you that are going to this to be sure to mention our list and our genealogy. Feel free to give out my name and e-mail address too as the Texas Harkeys are cousins from my direct line. Descendants of Martin Harkey and his son Jacob Harkey. Mary Russell [email protected] 416 W. The Harkey info I have comes from a book entitled "The Shinn family in Europe and America" It is available, on film, at LDS Family history centers. The book was originally published at the turn of the century. (I am not convinced that it is an unimpeachable source, but the more recent information appears to be reliable.) The book basically tells the story of the Shinn family in NJ and how they arrived in NC in the mid 1700s. The narrative ends with "The sixth generation" with a (Katy) Maria Shinn who married Isaac Harkey abt 4FEB1828. (film # 1760778) A list of their children (according to the book) is as follows: 1. John Kashaw Harkey(7), m Minerva Shaw and had children, Dr William Isaac Harkey of Ola Ark, and Mary Harkey. 2. Lavina Harkey (7) m first Jacob Mendenhall and then Talkington. 3. Mary Emeline Harkey (7) m Dickney Fowler and had children. James, Sarah,John, and Francis, plus three others who died in infancy. 4. James Sharp Harkey (7) m Mary Ann Petray. 5. William Jacob Harkey (7) m first Frances Burkhead, then Mary Wells, then Elizabeth George, and had children. William, Jesse, Charles, Emily, Maggie, Lucy, Rosa, and Addie. 6. Hester Harkey (7) [My direct ancestor] m Birk Talkington and had children... 7. Sara Elizabeth Harkey (7) m DeWitt Stout and had children: Henry, Thomas and Kate. 8. Thomas Jefferson Harkey (7) enlisted and died in the Confederate army. 9. Martha Jane Harkey (7) m William Brigham, and had children Lillie and Alice. 10. Martin Luther Harkey (7), 11. Maria Ann Minerva Harkey, (7) m Robert Battenfield. 12. Kate Harkey(7) m William Martin and had eleven children of which I have six, Samuel, Charles, Mattie, Lillie, Annie, and Martina. 13. Littleton Harkey (7), ob infans. I have another source that has this couple with 15 children, so errors may abound here. I would like to know if any of these Harkeys ring a bell with anyone in the discussion group, as the info I have seen so far has not listed an Isaac Harkey in NC. I am interested in knowing who his parents were. The book also records that several other Shinns and Harkeys married and travelled to Arkansas together during "The great exodus" These were siblings of Katy Maria: Elizabeth Sarah Shinn m David Harkey 1/24/1822; James Madison Shinn m Sophia Harkey in 1832. Hope this helps to make connections with Harkeys you might have. Tim Q. The Yell County Harkeys have both William and Willburn names, so "Bill" might be Willburn (Wilburn, Wellborn, etc.). (Wilburn is also a continuing name in my line of HARKEYs. Was he a governor or general or something?) Is Flora Barrett part of the HARKEY discussion group? She wrote the "Harkeys of Yell County, Arkansas" history about her own family. She would certainly be a good person to ask. Alma Roark Johnson [email protected]
Dear Harkeys, This is (1) a posting of the children of John HARKEY and (2) John HARKEY's will. The following family list shows the children of John HARKEY and Elizabeth (last name not known). John was the eldest son of "Old Martin." The family list was compiled about 30 years ago by Joseph Harkey ("The Harkey Family of North Carolina"). THERE ARE MANY ERRORS, SO DON'T TAKE IT AS GOSPEL TRUTH! Use it as a guide. Over the years, where I found or received conflicting or additional data, I added them and their sources in double brackets [[ ]]. I'm sure there are other corrections and additions still to be made, so please check the list against your own copying or research. Dear Harkeys, Does anyone have information on Paul HARKEY, the son of Henry HARKEY and Maria MELCHER and grandson of "old Martin"? Paul must have lived in Kentucky and Tennesee from about 1840 to about 1850, judging by the ages and birth places of his children in the 1850 Stoddard Co. MO census. Hi Harkey List and Hi Joann. Joann asked me to find Bill Harkey b. Yell Co. AR.in 1850 who married Mary Lee Moore. He died in 1924 in Haskell Co. OK. She said they had three sons and a daughter. I can not find Bill Harkey in my database. Well , I find lots of William Harkeys but none that match an 1850 birthdate and none with Mary Lee Moore as a wife. I do know of a Moore--My G- grandpa Moses I Harkey's 4th wife was Jane Moore. Everybody get your notes out and let's find Bill Harkey for Joann. Mary Russell [email protected]
Happy 4th of July It has been called to my attention that the dates for Christina Beever are a bit off. Until positive proof is established let's say her birth date was about 1793. I don't think she would have been having babies in her 60's. Kay Wood Go Gators! Steve "GATOR" Wood "The Ball is Shaped to be Thrown" [email protected] "Pressure is the Best Defense"
Hi-- From what I have seen posted here , and from searching for several years and talking to other Harkey researchers--We all seem to claim Johannes Herche who entered America aboard the ship "Lydia" Sept. 19, 1743. During the last two years on the internet, I have also found a descendant of a John Hershey and a descendant of a Johannes who carries the name of Hinch --- both who claim Johannes as theirs. I have the passenger list of Lydia. I have the signature if it is his. I can not reach a conclusion based on that alone. My question is ---Do any of you have any other proof or documentation that our emigrant ancestor was Johannes Herche? Mary Russell [email protected]

Good Morning All Harkeys, A special hello to Mary Russel. Now for the John m. Tina Beaver information. Basically I have information from a LARGE box retrieved from my father after his death. The box had spent some years in an attic until I had the chance to sift through the contents. My information earlier than Jessee Harkey on my line is only proven by the fact that my father recorded it and there are records from the NC churches, deeds, and some wills. I do believe for the most part the information as he recorded it has checked out, but please, if anyone thinks differently let's figure it out. Within this material there is reference to a will for Christopher BEEVer or BEAVER, father of Christina that plays into some proof, but I'm not that far back yet in my proving. Also I have heard from my half brothers that Dad was having trouble finding any concrete facts about John himself. All of this is not yet on the computer and right now I don't have time to get it all typed. I have much information for Jesse, one son, and a family page for Daywalt. I think someone also sent Dad a family sheet on Ruben. The afore mentioned will does shed some light. Maybe another Harkey has made more progress in this area and will help us out. I must admit that my time has been spent in German script the past months in relation to another branch of my tree. Must go. Kay Wood Go Gators! Hello Harkey list and Kay Wood--I'm back from a weekend in Mississippi and ready to work on these Harkey folks. ---- Kay--Good to meet you. Thanks for giving us the last name of Mary Melchor--I didn't have it. I do have a list of 15 children but very little if any information on them. I had seen that a John Harkey married Tina Beever in a book somewhere but didn't know which John. Would love for you to put this family info on the list in more detail and I am ready and willing to share any info I have. Mary Russell [email protected] > I'm Kay Wood from San Jose CA and I have genealogy fever. My Harkey line <><><><><><><>><<<<<<<<> > Johannes--Martin---Henry m. Congratulations Craig and all Harkey descendent, This is a great way to exchange missing and puzzling information. I'm Kay Wood from San Jose CA and I have genealogy fever. My Harkey line comes from Johannes, the Immigrant, to Martin and surprise, My group went into KY from NC. Briefly: Johannes--Martin---Henry m. Mary Melchor---John m.Tina Beever---Jesse m. Dosse and Eliza---Stokes Alexander m. Suzannah Madera Cox---Clifford "E" ---Clifford Eugene---Kay Louise Currently I'm researching Jesse, who went from NC to KY. I have found death verification in Paragould, AR and information of his KY time in Symonia Graves Co., but as yet I've not been able to establish marriage information or when the death of Dosee took place. Stokes Alexander was born in Cabarrus Co NC 1854. The next six children were from Eliza. If anyone has worked on this line please contact me either by posting here (for all to see) or e-mail [email protected] My material is not all into the computer yet, but I'm working on it. Hello again, Harkeys I posted my descendancy chart before Craig Couch's "message #1" arrived and didn't think to introduce myself. My Harkeys descend from Daniel David Harkey (a grandson of Martin and son of Martin's oldest son, John), who was born in 1797 in Mecklenburg Co NC. Daniel David moved from NC to GA and then to MS, where in 1850 (according to Lora Harkey Scott's article) he caught gold fever and decided to go to California. However, when he passed through Dunklin County, in Missouri's boot-heel (the part that originally had been part of Arkansas), he found the land so bountiful that he moved his family there in 1850-51. From 1851 until about 1936, my HARKEY ancestors lived mostly within the bounds of Dunklin County, Missouri. Daniel David allegedly had nine sons. All of them moved to Dunklin County and most of them lived to raise families, and so, as you can imagine, the county is full of HARKEYs. My father, Bill ROARK, however, took his young wife, Neva Alice Evelyn HARKEY, and baby to California in 1936 (and I, the second child, was born on the way, in Arizona). Mama's HARKEY family soon joined us in Napa, CA, and we stayed there through World War II. Then, in 1947, my father decided to move to Alaska. Again, the HARKEYs came, too, some with us, others shortly after. And so, when you see AK in my descendancy chart, it is not an error. I don't mean Arkansas, I do mean Alaska. I left Alaska in 1961 and have lived in Seattle ever since. I was a research publications editor at the University of Washington until I retired a little early in 1993, and now I write short stories and just fart around. Two children: Rachel, 28, and Matthew, 30, both living nearby. In joining the HARKEY list, I hope to get a sharper and more complete picture of the HERCHE/HARKEY/etc. family that landed in Philadelphia and spread out from there. The way they spread fascinates me--who was where, why they left, where they went, and who went with them. I like descendancy charts well enough, but I love documents, especially wills, and I am hoping someone belongs to a HARKEY family whose members were literate and kept old letters or diaries he/she will share. One very specific question I have is this: Daniel David HARKEY's (b 1797) father, John, died in 1821 in NC. What happened to Daniel David's mother, Elizabeth? JH (Joseph Harkey) gives a specific death date for Elizabeth in 1863, but he doesn't say WHERE she died. Did she leave with one of her children, or did she remain in NC? I didn't mean to be so long-winded, but then I never do. Alma Roark Johnson [email protected]
Dear Harkey searchers, I'm glad to be a part of the HARKEY surname discussion list. I haven't received any postings yet, but I hope you'll all begin soon. I'll start my own postings with my descendancy chart. My chart is full of unproven third- and fourth-hand information. Most of the early generations came from Joseph Harkey's unpublished article, "Harkeys of North Carolina." Most of the rest came from Lora Harkey Scott's article "Harkeys of Dunklin County, Missouri." I can defend almost none of it and, after a respectable amount of argument, will be happy to be corrected on any or every point. Jess Epps <[email protected]> wrote: I am sorely lacking for information on my great grandmother: Anna (Harkey) Epps and her siblings and ancestors. My great grandfather: Joel Stimpson Epps moved from Davidson County NC to Russellville (Pope County), AR between 1850 and 1860 with his first wife and children; his parents: Pleasant (Junior) and Elizabeth (Burkhead) Epps; his brothers: Burkhead and Martin; and possibly some other siblings. Isaac Harkey and 4 children had moved from NC to AR in 1839, so I assume the families were aquainted. Isaac had 5 more children born in AR for which I have no information. I am also missing 5 of David Harkeys (Annas Father) 18 children. Joel Stimpson Epps first married Asinith (last name unknown) in NC about 1840 and fathered 5 children. I dont know what happened to her, but he then married Anna Harkey on 05 January 1863 in AR and fathered ten (10) more children, one of whom was my grandfather: David Thomas Epps. The whole bunch, including Uncle Davey David Harkey (Annas father) moved to Palmer or Trumbull (Ellis County) TX about 1877, where most of them were eventually buried, in the Palmer Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jess - A review of WFTs finds the Ancestors of David Thomas Epps (copyright: Brøderbund Software, Inc., World Family Tree Vol. 6, Ed. 1, (Release date: August 22, 1996), "CD-ROM," Tree #1802, Date of Import: Jun 26, 1997.): Generation No. 1 1. The HARKEY (Herch, Herche, Herche Der Junge) mail list is now up and running. Welcome! You should have already gotten full details on how to unsubscribe. Just send a message to [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. Or, you may surf to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/surnames/surnames-c.html and scroll down to HARKEY-L (or HARKEY-D, the digest version), and unsubscribe yourself. Please, if you have questions, drop me an e-mail and I'll get right back to you. In advance, thank you for your patience with me; as a new list maintainer, I don't know nothin' 'bout this stuff. You will notice that I expanded the surname list to include some obvious antecedents or variations on HARKEY. I have obtained the names and addresses for bout two dozen additional World Family Tree (WFT) submitters, and I will attempt to find any with e-mail addresses from the net directories. So far about one in five has e-mail. I have also assembled a single Family Tree Maker file with nearly all of the Harkeys from the first 7 WFT CDs, and I will do searches for names for you all. If you want to integratethe HARKEY branches of your trees into this, please send a WFT file or GEDCOM to me at: Craig Crouch 5307 Hawkhaven Court Rocklin, CA 95765 To kick-off the maillist, I recommend that we all introduce each other, and summarize our research interests. I know... let's talk about me! I live in Rocklin, CA, near Sacramento, with my wife Paula (her passion is quilting) and nearly 7-year-old son Morgan (trucks and cars!). I am employed by Sacramento County as their drainage engineer, which has been more excitement this year than I like. I got interested in genealogy just two years ago, and was seriously infected this time last year. Now, the routes taken on family vacations are skewed towards County court houses and old family locales. The internet is the only thing that really makes genealogy possible for me though, since I've some years to go before I can travel at will. I have found the community of genealogists on the internet to be as personable and patient as those I meet at the Family History Centers. I am searching for the ancestors of Mary Y. HARKEY 1. Mary Y. HARKEY, born Abt. 1792 in Tuscaloosa, AL; died 1860 in MS. She married (1) Matthew PITTMAN. He was the son of Matthew PITTMAN and Keziah WILLIAMSON. Children of Mary HARKEY and Matthew PITTMAN are: i. John Harkey PITTMAN, born Abt. 1808 in Mecklenburg, NC; died Bef. 1860 in Choctaw, MS. ii. Elizabeth PITTMAN, born Abt. 1810 in NC; died Abt. 1891. iii. James William PITTMAN, born 14 Jan 1812 in Mecklenburg, NC; died 27 May 1892 in Llano, TX. iv. Sarah PITTMAN, born Abt. 1815 in NC. v. David J. PITTMAN, born Abt. 1816 in Mecklenburg County, NC; died 24 Mar 1883 in Youngsport, Bell, TX; married Comfort J. BROOKS 01 Mar 1866 in Sevier, AK. vi. William Nelson PITTMAN, born 15 May 1822 in Mecklenburg, NC; died 27 May 1879 in Navarro, TX. vii. Evan Alexander PITTMAN, born 14 Jun 1823 in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa, AL1; died 04 Jul 1888; married Tobitha Pamelia EZELL Abt. 1851 in Sevier County, AR. I am content to work on background on the surname until the "break" comes on this line. So, how about it? Please share a bit about each of you and the current bit of grit in your genealogy oyster.
